Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino pulled off a real transfer coup late last week by acquiring Pablo Osvaldo from AS Roma for a club record fee of £15m. The Italian international arrives at St Mary’s on a four-year contract and is the third big-money buy this summer, following the acquisition of Dejan Lovren and Victor Wanyama for a combined £20 million.

The move reunites the Argentine-born forward with Pochettino after he previously played under the Saints boss for Spanish outfit Espanyol. Officially introduced to the press yesterday, Osvaldo admitted the club’s long-term interest, allied with the chance to work with Pochettino again, was something he simply couldn’t turn down:

“It’s the club that showed the most interest in me. Second of all I know Mauricio and I know how he works. I’m very happy to be working with him. …He’s magnificent. It’s fantastic, great to work with him. He is a great motivator and for me it’s very important to work with people who appreciate and respect how I work. For many years people haven’t appreciated that. I know him well and how he sets out his teams. The season I had at Espanyol was my best as a footballer. In a personal sense, I think I did well playing under him. I want to repeat that and improve it. I’m confident that will happen and I can’t wait to start. And also because I wanted to play in the Premier League, I’ve been dreaming about it and I want to do something important in the league. “

The History

It’s fair to say the 27-year-old is a somewhat nomadic character. Starting his career in the country of his birth with Huracan, Osvaldo scored 11 times in 33 matches back in 2005 before making his way to Italy with Atalanta. After notching once in three appearances, he was on his travels to Lecce, producing eight goals in 31 matches, but yet again lasted a single season in his new surrounds; this time Osvaldo was snapped up by Fiorentina, where he produced just five goals and a single assist over 21 Serie A appearances.

Loaned to Bologna midway through the 2008/09 campaign, he went on to play 25 times, producing just three goals and an assist, before a switch to La Liga – initially on loan – saw him finally find his feet. With 20 goals and four assists over 44 league matches in Spain, Osvaldo’s eye for goal persuaded Roma to bring him back to Italy ahead of the 2011/12 season. While his first year was impressive – 11 goals and five assists in 26 league matches – the six foot striker really hit his stride last term, registering an impressive 16 goals and a pair of assists over 29 games.

On the international stage, Osvaldo has turned out for Italy on 10 occasions and found the net four times, with three strikes in four World Cup qualifiers last year.

The Prospects

After an eventful time at his previous club, Osvaldo will be hoping to settle at St Mary’s. Over his two years in the Italian capital, the six foot forward had a somewhat rocky relationship with the club’s bosses, fans and players and, most notoriously, punched a team-mate who failed to pass him the ball. A hot-headed, tempestuous talent, his history with Pochettino will be key to ensuring Osvaldo keeps his cool and allows Southampton to get the best out of his undoubted abilities.

Given the club’s outlay, it’s fair to assume the forward will be a key protagonist in Pochettino’s side – with a World Cup just around the corner, he looks guaranteed starts as he stakes a claim for inclusion in the Azzurri squad. In terms of his impact on the Saints’ shape, there are a number of theories doing the round – a 4-2-3-1 could see Osvaldo, Adam Lallana and Gaston Ramirez line up behind Rickie Lambert, for instance. Alternatively, a 4-3-1-2 with Osvaldo partnering Rickie Lambert up top has been bandied about, a 4-3-3 with Osvaldo on the flank and a 4-4-1-1, with the new boy leading the line just ahead of Lambert are all being mooted as potential formations.

While Lambert still looks integral to Pochettino’s style of play, Jay Rodriguez’s game time could be a real issue, though he may still get the nod over Ramirez, whose somewhat lethargic displays have failed to convince Pochettino. The Uruguayan’s lack of overall work rate doesn’t quite fit in with his manager’s high pressing game, while Rodriguez’s energetic displays, on the other hand, have caught the eye since the departure of Nigel Adkins.

Having kicked off their season with a win at West Brom, Southampton seem primed for investment due to a hugely appealing run of upcoming fixtures. Sunderland, West Ham, Palace and Swansea are all set to roll up to St Mary’s in the next six Gameweeks and, with a trip to Norwich also on their agenda, there’s plenty reason for optimism as we assess Pochettino’s kindly-priced Fantasy assets.

Priced at 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Osvaldo – for all his talent – may still struggle to oust Lambert in our Fantasy affections. If, as expected, the latter keeps his spot as the most advanced forward, his spot-kick and share of set-piece duties continue to bolster his strong value appeal. Kinder on the budget at 7.5 in FPL, Lambert is already off the mark after a late penalty at West Brom on Saturday and Romelu Lukaku owners are turning to the Saints man as a similarly-priced alternative. If, in the unlikely event that Lambert drifts out the picture, Osvaldo looks a definite option but it’s difficult to see past the England man as he looks to replicate the form that saw him finish last term as the third top scoring forward in the FPL game.

    Repost from last night...

Still trying to work out the new bonus system. I've been looking at which positions got the baps last season compared to this season:

    http://i.imgur.com/XcRF3Ey.png

Last season, defenders won 27% of the bonus points, which rose to 40% in games which ended goalless or had just the one goal.

This season so far, admittedly it's a very small sample size with more clean sheets than normal, but defenders have won 42% of the bonus points, rising to 56% in games which only had one goal.

So defenders have definitely gained under the new system, and it's not just down to the number of clean sheets in GW1. But they've gained mostly at the expense of midfielders; forwards don't seem to have lost out at all.

This is definitely something that was evident in the Chelsea and Man City games. Definitely got me thinking. Could be a season to have at least 2 big Defenders in your team.

Midfielders in general didn't seem to score big in GW1. Big hitters Walcott, Coutinho,Michu, Hazzard, Cazorla, were all relatively quiet. But it's true that defenders will probablyy benefit from the new Bp system. Change of tactic required perhaps for the seasoned player

looking at FPL teams this gw midfields are struggling so i assume it's basically down to a less than average week for midfielder goals and assists so far. in the city game where 2 mids scored the baps came. same for barkley and would seemingly have been the same for lampard if he didn't miss the pen.

zabaleta got an assist remember. lescott the exception. in general defenders have a realy easy job of getting the 3 points each game for over 30 passes at 90%+ accuracy

      I think it's before gw4.

      Reasoning
      - They want Rvp in then (fixture)
      - international break and good time to fix your team and make some money at same time (lot of price movent because of long break - in theory at least)
      - we have seen 3 gw and know much more than before season started
      - they have had bad start and are panicing

Something like that, but hopefully I don't need wildcard before next year.

      Several reasons

1.Fixtures change for some of the teams from difficult to relatively easy around that time (Man U/Swansea) and vice versa for some other teams...

      2. It is post transfer window

      3. Lots of transfer activity lends itself to a quick buck or two

      4. Teams have shown their hand for the most likely starters

Just under half of all the top FPL managers WC within the first four weeks btw...

    Thoughts please:

Cole->Zaba&Lukaku->Soldado this week (-4) enables me to do Hazard->SIlva/Coutinho/Michu for GW3

    or I can just go

Lukaku->Sturridge this week (with my spare 1m) and then Cole->Zaba the next week, benching Hazard.

monday was an absolute nightmare owning him. the first 'that would have been an assist last season but not this' of the season. zabaleta directs a pass at him, he dummies it taking out 2 players in the process and nasri scores, zabaleta gets 4 points for his pass, dzeko nothing. gets baited into a really needless yellow card. all scattered around missing the most clear cut chances i saw all weekend.
trying to take positives from it like there are big scores in there but that just makes the pain worse

To get RVP GW4, I need to downgrade a premium mid (Walcott, Silva, Hazard) to a budget mid (4.5). Worth it? I would then have Lambert, Sturridge, and RVP up top. I already have Mirallas, or Barkley would have been an option.

Tough one to call that. Based on the villa game I'd say ditch reall. But their fixtures do look very good. Also, ask yourself the question would that frontline outscore a 9m plus 3 up front. Lots to consider imo, still torn on whether to bring him in myself

right. I have 3.5 in the bank now, so could upgrade Anelka to Bony. That would leave me with silva, walcott, hazard, jarvis, mirallas, lambert, bony, sturridge. Not bad and better balance.

Twitter@SkyJamieCasey @skyjamiecaseySky Bet punters have been interested in Mesut Ozil to Man Utd in recent days, with a fair few bets coming in, seeing his price cut from 5/1 to 3/1 to join before the deadline. That Sky will eventually be charged with market manipulation. To be such a huge player in the football media whilst also providing markets on bets whose odds are almost entirely derived from media gossip, is a clear conflict of interests. I don't know why I still give my money over to these guys.

Replacing Lukaku and it comes down to two options for me:

    Lambert
    or
    Dzeko

    Lambert
Next 6: SUN nor WHU liv PAL SWA
Pros: 100% nailed on (with a glowing scout endorsement in this article), on pens and FKs, on a personal high after Eng cap and goal, next 6 are superb bar liv away (only newcastle above them on ticker and I'd question that)
Cons: Slight uncertainty how Osvaldo will impact, may play off the striker (doubtful imo). Can't think of another con

    Dzeko
Next 6: car HUL sto MUN avl EVE
Pros: Playing in a team that look like they will score hatfuls, very kind run (bar MUN home), should start next two after impressive (non goalscoring) performance monday night. Most shots over all ten games with 8 (3 on target), very budget friendly for MCY
Cons: Rotation, Aguero Negredo and Joveric will all oimpact his gametime eventually, its a question of when. Pellegrini has said he's the main man but until I see consistent starts I'm skeptical. No set pieces

Overall, for me Lambert edges it. Better fixtures, more nailed on, set pieces. I you want City cover though Dzeko is a great punt short term, very budget friendly

there's no way lambert is 100% nailed on after they've just spent 15mil on a centre forward. the difference now is he can't have a dry patch and keep his place, they have more than mayuka waiting in the wings

fair enough then, think you could be fine there. there's 0% doubt in my mind osvaldo is a superior centre forward to lambert, only doubts are adjusting to a new league and histrionics, the former being a short-term positive for lambert. i assume the lambert in the hole fall-back option is based on a real lack of trust being shown in gaston ramirez so far, lambert still has a real eye for a through-ball, unlike jay rodriguez though he doesn't have the flexibility to play wide too

If you pay £15m for a player you play him, simple as that, your not wrong there. Can see him on bench for first two, this weekend being a bit soon to start (perhaps) and away to Nor maybe 1 up top. Once he starts you can be pretty sure he'll stay there (bar the odd rest - not many play week in week out).

Bith will play the majority if games in the long run bar dramatic goal droughts

The problem with the majority of people on this site is that their memory only remembers the last game.

You had all summer to pick your team. So you picked your players for a reason.

Then half a gameweek later, you are taking out all your players that didnt score & replacing them for people that did score.

This week the people you get in wont score, as they wont score every week & they players you took out, will score.

That being said, I've had a terrible start and was always planning on getting Lukaku out early.. And I would have always gone with a fit Aguero, which is the only player I'm trying to get in this week.

Well, one more post about new BPS, if you're not too overloaded with it.

Yes, while it's extremely favorable to defenders & goalkeepers it somehow manages to ignore one of the best performers of the games. Sturridge, Lampard & Dzeko all had a very, very good matches at the weekend but didn't get even a single BP! It's worth noting that under previous regime (which many of us considered unfair) Sturridge and Lamps would be awarded 3 BPs & Dzeko would get 1 - really fair reward for their displays.

So, is it possible to develop comprehensive system or is it like "one or another"? More points for defenders is great news for us but those who had a really good match under their belt must be rewarded as well, no matter of the position of the field, do you agree? Thanks.

There seems to be more points to go around this year though, which could be good.

A little, they seem more tolerant to letting several players get the same amount of points. The 3 Chelsea defenders getting 2 points was notable.

      no
depends on your definition of good game, missing several very good scoring chances and getting booked isnt what i would be looking for.
the baps system is the same for all managers, you just have to adjust your players to get those it may favour same as every year.

"very, very good matches" is somewhat subjective.

I think a stats-based regime can work but it needs the right algorithm, i.e. the right stats with the right weightings. For example I don't understand why the new bonus system doesn't reward payers for shots on target, but it penalises them for shots off target.

Until someone invents a working system, I think a better approach would be to weight it 50/50 between a stats-based approach and a human opinion approach. Even a human opinion can be averaged between several different people to reduce bias.

For me, the best way to allocate Bonus Points is to pick a number of match reports from the newspapers. . . aggregate, and then average the player ratings from the said match reports, and Robert's your Auntie's life partner.

    Hi all,
As many people, I am going to swap Lukaku out. Have no money in bank.

    Options are:
Lambert (new competition from Osvaldo? / great fixtures though)
Dzeko (great fixtures / good form / rotation threat?)
Bony (horrible fixtures / great record previously / was a beast when he came on for Swansea)

Any others I should consider? Thoughts on a replacement for Lukaku?
    Thanks in advance.

Not worried about Osvaldo being chosen over Lambert? Will Bony be first choice up front with Lukaku behind or will there be some competition? Worried about Swansea's European involvements.

Currently Henderson (a non-starter). Was banking on a Jaaskelinin twisted ankle in GW1, wanted to avoid potential price drop w/ Davis

Not too much wrong with your team at all. Terry should be your first man out. Try Lescott or Whittaker.

Not a bad team at all.

I'd got Terry to Collins/Turner then you have some cash to either upgrade Anelka to Lambert/Dzeko or you can play around with lukaku (same suspects: sturridge, soldado, bony, or even lambert/dzeko)

One more thing about this new boy Osvaldo is that at Espanyol under Pochettino he played as the main striker, with Callejon behind him. He was their leading goal scorer that season by some margin, even scored in the home game against Barcelona, which we won 5-1.

I haven't followed his career since then, but judging by some stats / press, he seems to have continued to play as the main striker at Roma with Totti and Lamela behind / around him.

It's a little disconcerting, given that I am eyeing Lambert as my Lukaku replacement.

That's what is putting me off Lambert too. Was a definite replacement until Osvaldo was signed. Now I'm stuck on who to pick because the other alternative, Dzeko, is a rotation risk, and Bony, is unproven. What are your thoughts?

Still thinking Lambert, it will take some time for Osvaldo to get integrated and they have good short-term fixtures.

i've only watched him for italy and at roma, so the opposite really (only googled espanyol time) and i like lambert, i like his story, i liked his england goal but all this love is bordering on patronising a guy who until the age of 30 was a football league player. it's not even up for debate who is the superior centre forward of the 2 unless osvaldo adapts really badly to the premier league
