Last Friday was a busy day at White Hart Lane. Having earlier announced the signing of defender Vlad Chiriches, Tottenham broke their transfer record for the third time this summer with the acquisition of Erik Lamela from AS Roma. The 21-year-old arrives in north London for a fee reported to be in the region of £30m, topping the £17m and £26m outlays on Paulinho and Roberto Soldado respectively.

Having seen a deal for Willian hijacked at the last minute by Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas turned to the highly-rated Argentine as he splashed the cash ahead of Gareth Bale’s subsequent departure to Real Madrid. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Lamela is keen to make his mark after a couple of seasons in Serie A:

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great move for me and I’m looking forward to doing my best for the team in every game. I like the English style of football, it’s very offensive and attacking and that’s how I want to play. I have to adapt to playing in the Premier League as quickly as I can.”

The History

A product of the River Plate youth academy, Lamela was offered a contract by Barcelona at the age of 12 but chose to reject the La Liga club and remain in his native country. Handed his debut back in June 2009, Lamela proceeded to play 36 league matches, producing four goals and six assists, but his club’s relegation from the Argentine top-flight saw the suitors circling.

Snapped up by Roma in the summer of 2011 for a bargain €12 million, Lamela’s first season in Italy was more of a settling-in period. From 29 appearances, he produced four goals and seven assists before stepping up considerably under the guidance of Zdenek Zeman last time out. Situated on the right of a front three, the left-footer racked up 15 goals and five assists over 33 league matches, with only four players – including former team-mate and Southampton new boy Pablo Osvaldo – scoring more Serie A goals in 2012/13.

On the international stage, Lamela has scored three goals in four appearances for Argentine U20s and has turned out for the senior side on three occasions.

The Prospects

Crucially for Villas-Boas, Lamela’s versatility affords him options in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. As mentioned above, he was deployed as an inverted winger on the right of a three-man frontline in his final season in Italy to huge success and with the Spurs boss adding the likes of Paulinho and Etienne Capoue to his options in central midfield, Villas-Boas has already rolled out a 4-3-3 against Swansea and Arsenal.

The likes of Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend will surely tumble down the pecking order in light of the Argentine’s arrival, with Lamela’s superb dribbling ability and creativity, allied with a penchant for cutting inside and letting fly from his favoured left foot, making him the hot favourite for a role on the right flank.

Alternatively, Lamela can just as easily be fielded in “the hole” behind a lone forward. While Paulinho impressed in the Gameweek 2 win over the Swans, the formation left Roberto Soldado stranded all too often up front, with Spurs lacking in creativity from central areas in both their last couple of league matches – a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to solve such a problem and hand the Spaniard a little more support in attacking areas; boosting his appeal as he searches for his first league goal from open play.

While the number 10 role is Lamela’s preferred position, the subsequent signing of Christian Eriksen suggests the Dane has been acquired with this berth in mind but, of the pair, the Argentine’s greater adaptability may afford him more game time, with Eriksen likely to be more dependant on specific systems to flourish. Certainly, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s chances of remaining in the mix look slim – having been dropped for the last two matches, the Icelandic international may have to rely on cup appearances and game time off the bench in light of his manager’s summer spending spree.

Priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports, Lamela is set to pick up plenty interest over the international break as Fantasy managers reconsider their midfields after a lacklustre start by many of the big-hitters. With Soldado now up to 9.7 in FPL, the Argentine offers a cheaper route into Villas-Boas’ side ahead of a superb schedule which has Spurs rated top of our fixture ticker over the next six Gameweeks – home clashes against Norwich, West Ham and Hull, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa afford the north London club the chance to quickly bounce back after yesterday’s disappointing derby defeat to Arsenal.

How do people feel about Nani in the coming weeks. He has explosive points potential and is priced at a major discount (7.4). I have a hard time believing that a player as "confident" as he would sign a new contract without being guaranteed first team football in a World Cup year. Thoughts?

He's a player I would love to nail down a spot. Great potential FPL-wise and Utd need his creativity. Only a few years ago the man was a reliable captaincy choice.

i want him too but its a huge risk.

welbeck, young, valencia, kagawa, giggs, zaha, a lot for that position. could be rotation regularly - even valencia was benched against liverpool.

I have him on my watchlist....the challenge is you always know which nani will show up after a few touches and 10mins. too bad we did not have the forsight to know a phead of time. if he wants to play, there are not many who can match him. Too bad hpthe effort is not there week after week.

I completely agree, however Wold Cup years can bring out the best in people, especially in terms of motivation. Still, I don't believe he would sign unless he was given some kind of guarantee. Also, for those of us not wanting to drop the funds on RVP, he could be an option. Add to that his price of 7.4 and it makes it even more tempting. Look at many premium players with price tags of 9.0 plus and I wonder if this year is the year to take cheap punts with suitable backup. It's not as if any of these premium players with much higher prices are nailed on either. In fact, most teams have 1 or 2 premium players that can just as easily be rotated. Chelsea mids, city forwards, all will be rotated and yet we justify bringing them in with much higher prices and about the same potential for explosive returns as nani...something to consider.

I was very tempted...almost did it but I have 13 or if not 14 starters at the weekend - it seems hasty to give up on the likes of Coutinho, Mirallas though...I'm going to give them more time.

Besides, the arrival of Lukaku as a very viable option for around 7.5 looks good now. A Wildcard would have been played to attempt to get Giroud/Sturridge in a hurry - I think Lukaku is a good alternative now and I can move for that without playing the WC.

Hey guys, repost, 0 replies. Firstly apologies for the length of this post, just having a mess around with a potential wildcard team, please could you tell me whether you prefer my current team or the potential WC team please? (Currently ranked 85, 628)

    Current Team:

    Mignolet - K. Davis

    K.Toure, Zabaleta, Koscielny - Ward, B.Turner

Mirallas, Walcott, Silva, Coutinho - Livermore

    Giroud, Soldado, Lambert

    Potential WC Team:

    Mignolet - K.Davis

Zabaleta, Ivanovic, Agger - Ward, B.Turner

Walcott, Lampard, Ozil, Ward-Prowse - Livermore

    Giroud, Soldado, Sturridge

Also, if you prefer the WC team, which two from the below for one DEF & MID spot?

    A. Hazard & Coleman

    B. Silva & Coleman/Collins

    C. Lampard & Ivanovic

Any comments help or advice greatly appreciated.

    a) find the money to ship toure for sakho (possibly by downgraing mirallas) and hold onto foster, playing boruc each week
    b) ship foster for mig. downgrade toure to a 4.0 to fund it
    c) ship foster for mig and upgrade toure to terry/cahill, finding funds elsewhere by downgrading mirallas

b)... I think Mig's essential, and while Toure was great while he lasted, he's not going to play much. Not sure about getting either Terry or Cahill, especially now the CL's starting... Iva or Cole are the only CFC defenders I'd be confident in.

      c. I did Mirallas > Hernandez. Mig is the best keeper pick. Upgrade Kolo later when we know who is nailed on, such as Dawson (5.0) or Sakho(5.5) as opposed to Terry/Cahill(6.0).

Lad in work playing FPL for the first time this year. He has had a good start and his team looks pretty decent. He is currently 30 points ahead of me and has offered me a bet that he will finish above me at the end of the season, whatever amount I want within reason.

    His team is

    Hart Schwartzer
    Zaba Coleman Koscielny Vidic Toure
    Coutinho Hazard Nolan Snodgrass Taarabt
    Sturridge Lambert Bent

He has captained Lambert every week so far.

Would you take the bet or too risky?

30pts over the course of the season? go for it! if you gain 1pt on him per week you'll beat him. not to mention he's a newbie so maybe you'll luck out and he'll miss a dgw or a blank.

he's got a good team but it's too back heavy and I think the trend will eventually shift more towards attackers.

drop Soldado, and if Sturridge gets hurt, you may not have another option you can afford (assuming you spend the extra money left over)

Bentenke is undroppable until proven otherwise

Sturridge to Giroud I suppose, but you'll be losing a .1 rise to capture another, and I'm not sure their scoring potential is that different (but you do gain a little spare cash)

all prices and health issues equal, would drop Soldado, but they're not, hence Sturridge

Once you've made money on buying risers, how do you profit on it by making a more expensive club thats one thing i get confused on because if you take the player thats gone up out and replace it, it gives you less? I dunno lol

    Ev's got me interested now

it gives you more, you make 0.1 on every 0.2 rise. as long as the players you want at the end aren't also rising, then you're making cash.

well if you got in a riser you wanna keep then obviously keep them because if you sell them, you'll lose money

however if you're on a wc and you just brought in a riser to increase value, you have to hope they double rise. so say you brought someone in for 9.0 and they rise to 9.2, then you can sell them for 9.1 and make .1 of profit so then you have an extra .1 to spend. does that make sense?

btw make sure to check the link I posted above and sign up!

You get a player you don't want, he rises 0.2, you sell him for the player you want leaving you with the 0.1 profit

sa for example you want to own soldado and not giroud.

soldado will drop to 9.6 by the end of the week.
      giroud will rise to 8.9

if you buy giroud at 8.7 and sell at 8.9, then but soldado at 9.6, you've made some good profit!

(i dont necessarily recommend those particular moves, just an eample 😀 )

      for example

if you bought Pablo Hernandez even though you don't want him on your team at the start of the international break, you'd have a player that will go up .2 during the break, and then you sell, profit .1, and reallocate your funds to buy the players you wanted in the first place, some of whom ostensibly did not rise in price, or even fell in price, during the break

I wish Liverpool has a mid like Lamela or Sturridge was on pens

Saw a few comments about Lamela/Couts above. BR has said the Moses signing allows Couts to play in the "hole" which seems to be the player's and managers preferred position for him. Doesn't that change things for Couts? Liverpool have prime fixtures too.

I sold him on my wc on the hope of picking him up cheaper and making cash on favoured mids.

    Thoughts?

Well it can't be much worse than him being on the wing. Christ he posed no threat there, might get him back on wc

quality player, but lacks sufficient goal threat. Seemed a tad under par in his last 2 games.

For a 9m midfielder I think he needs to be captain material and for you to have a more than just a punt with him.

      Perhaps I'm lacking foresight.

Then where will Suarez play when he returns? Surely Suarez play behind Sturridge and Coutinho will get pushed to the left or right?
