Arsenal’s in-form Olivier Giroud done the business for us last week, though the surprise omission of Adel Taarabt from Fulham’s home clash with West Brom proved a bitter blow. We cast an eye over this week’s PlayON price list and get scouting in search of bargains once again.

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a seasoned player, read on for our selection of early weekend targets…

Gameweek 5 Picks

Goalkeeper – Boaz Myhill
One of only two sub 8.0m priced keepers definitely in line to start this weekend, the Baggies man welcomes basement-dwellers Sunderland to the Hawthorns as Steve Clarke’s side go in search of their first win of the season. Coming in at just 7.6m in PlayON, Myhill is substantially cheaper than any of his defensive team-mates – Liam Ridgewell is the least expensive of the back-four at 10.2m – and has save points to fall back on if he does concede. Given that the Black Cats have scored three times in four games, though, a second clean sheet of the season could well be on the cards for the midlands outfit.

Defender – David Luiz
The Portuguese centre-half has started each of Chelsea’s previous three games across all competitions since recovering from a hamstring injury late last month. A home derby with injury-hit Fulham affords Jose Mourinho’s side the chance to recover from back-to-back defeats and Luiz’s eye for a long-range effort could well be set to trouble the visitors at Stamford Bridge tomorrow. Priced at just 8.3m this week by PlayON, Luiz is far more budget-friendly than any of his fellow Blues defenders and looks well worth a punt. Alternatively, Arsenal’s Bacary Sagna comes in at 8.4m ahead of a home clash with Stoke, while Liverpool’s Andre Wisdom also looks strong value. Priced at just 7.8m, he got the nod for the right-back slot at Swansea last Monday and will be hoping to retain his starting berth as goal-shy Southampton roll up to Anfield.

Midfielder – Yohan Cabaye
Re-installed to the Newcastle starting XI last weekend, the Frenchman’s presence at the heart of the Magpies’ midfield was fundamental to Alan Pardew’s switch from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3. Cabaye’s set-piece duties and creativity will be crucial for the Tyneside team this weekend as Hull make their way to St James’ Park – priced at a bargain 6.5m this week, he looks a cut-price gem as the hosts aim for a third straight win. Stephane Sessegnon is another budget option here. Priced at just 6.8m, West Brom’s record signing is poised to make his debut against former club Sunderland, whilst Norwich playmaker Robert Snodgrass has slipped to 7.7m ahead of a home showdown with Aston Villa.

Forward – Wayne Rooney
Three goals in two games since returning from a head wound highlights the United forward’s form ahead of Sunday’s all-Manchester showdown. Handed a role alongside Robin Van Persie up front by David Moyes, Rooney seems to have a renewed vigour to his game and, with confidence flourishing under the guidance of his former Everton mentor, could be the man to make the difference as the champions take a trip to the Etihad. At 11.5m he’s far from cheap but, when it comes to derbies, Rooney has a tendency to deliver. For those willing to take a punt, Romelu Lukaku is now down to 9.0m and looks in line for his Everton debut – he faces a tough time of it away to West Ham, though.

How To Play

PlayON is weekly fantasy football so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built (you can change your team as many times as you like up to 2 hours before the first kick-off – 10.45 tomorrow) you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of winning your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge other players to one-on-one games, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and Opta Joe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for £1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 69% win rate so far!

Facebook £100

In addition to guaranteeing a £1,000 pot this week, PlayON is also running a competition on its Facebook page – “Guess how much Van Persie costs on PlayON this week”? Just answer their Facebook poll with how much he costs and one correct reply wins £100 of free credit – more Facebook promotions on the way from PlayON over the season too.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game

We’ve also got a £2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, which is now open and the prize pot is building.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates to play for free bragging rights or for cash. Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we have published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

You have to be over 18 to enter cash games at PlayON. If you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly. PlayON is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

        Greensleeves 😆

Azpil is a punt as you say - I avoid them if I can as playing 90 minutes is worth 450 points and it's a bugger when you drop those. Price is right though.

Not sure about Clark - maybe a Sunderland defender instead?

I've gone Walcott instead of Ozil.

What does everyone think to the recent change PlayOn have made whereby the deadline is 2 hours before the first kick off rather than 15 minutes? To me it's reduces the games appeal drastically.

For information this is the response I got when asking about the change

PlayOn - Deadline for changing your team and entering games is *** 10.45 *** on Saturday morning, 2 hours before the first kick-off

      Me - Why?

PlayOn - We have amended this so people who aren't online just before kick-off are not at a disadvantage against those who are. Over time we are looking to grow the size of the pots each week and we cannot have people who finalise their team on a Friday at any disadvantage against people that are on the site on a Saturday morning.

For those people who are online on a Saturday, we are going to be introducing in-play games over the next few months.

    Killian here from PlayON.

I’m happy to answer any questions you have about PlayON or about the article above.

One point to note is that we have changed the deadline for finalising your team from 10 minutes before first kick-off to 2 hours before kick-off. We have made this change so that people who are online just before kick-off do not have an unfair advantage against those who aren't online on a Saturday morning. For those people who are online on Saturdays, we are introducing new in-play games over the coming months.

We understand that it is quite frustrating when one of your players doesn’t play so we are considering adding a subs bench to counteract this.

The format we are favouring at the moment is a separate subs budget of 30m to select 4x subs - 1 sub from each position. A few other options we are considering are:

    - 1 sub from any position
    - 1 sub from a team you haven’t already selected

If you have any thoughts on whether you think the introduction of a subs bench is a good idea or not and which of these subs options (or any other subs options) would work best, we are very interested to hear your feedback.

If you post any questions or feedback as replies below, I will answer them all.

    Thanks,
    Killian

        Hi Greenwindmill,
Thanks for posting this. I have taken a read through an a couple of points:
        1. We are flagging this as clearly as we can with a notification on the site so everyone is aware of the rule change;
        2. People loading up on the entire Man Utd starting team last week and winning money from it is clearly an indication that the rule needed to be changed;
        3. While I understand that this was a nice element to have, we are looking at other ways to get the same experience without disadvantaging those that aren't online 1 hour before
        4. We have people playing the game from over 70 different countries around the world and we need to take account of different time zones.

I like the fact you have to pick 11 players only. Adds an extra element that you have to choose players that will actually play. Rather than people fluking loads of points off the bench as in FPL

Sorry I should change the wording here. It's not 'fluking' as such in FPL, as you choose a 'squad'. But the idea of having separate funds for a bench doesn't appeal to me

      Hi Killian,

I was starting to get into the habit of playing PlayOn each week and enjoying it, but I am afraid the rule change has put paid to that.

I know what your official response is to it, but the fact is players who are playing fantasy football for money tend to be taking it fairly seriously, so checking lineups before a game is really not that much of a hassle, and is actually part of the whole experience, therefore to remove this aspect of the game, actually removes a key part, and actually one of the best parts.

It is a level playing field no matter when the deadline is, as it is the same for everyone, so I am afraid this argument is defunct.

          That is a fair point.

        Hi GiggingOrder,
We have people playing the game from all around the world and finalising their teams at different times. We need to make it a fair game for everyone involved and a small number of people being online and changing their teams right before the first kick-off makes the game less appealing as a whole. We are going to be introducing a lot of in-play aspects to the game over the coming months which should appeal to people who are online during the matches but the core of the game needs to be fair to everyone.

      Hi Killian

For me the change is a step backward and reduces the appeal of your game, your competition all allow changes up to the first kick off. The first thing I think is when you say "unfair advantage against those who aren't online on a Saturday morning" is you are referring to your ambassadors, if that is the case then really you should get better ambassadors than change the rules

        Hi Anonymous,
When we refer to unfair advantage we mean anyone that is not online 1 hour before the first kick-off, which is the majority of our customers. We are going to be introducing a number of "live" aspects to the game over the coming months but the core part of the game should not put anyone at a disadvantage

To put it a different spin on it I'm glad the deadline's been brought forward. I'm a casual and it's going to attract more casuals and therefore as a slightly more serious casual I should be able to steal their money.

But it's all based on a single GW. I'll happily take one casual's money one week, and then another's the next.

        Hi Poseidon,
The main issue with the 10 minute before kick-off deadline was that it put casual users at a disadvantage as they weren't online. We don't want someone who finalises their team in work on a Friday to be at any meaningful disadvantage against other players.

JWP Brady Hernandez doubts for me. Left with Lampard Walcott. Makes sense to ditch RVP for Rooney and upgrade Hernandez to HBA for a hit? (feels wrong making a sideways for Rooney at this point)

Or just do Hernandez > Moses, keep RVP for this week.

On wildcard which are best options?
    A. Evra or ivanovic
    B. Coleman or Merts
    C. Erikson or HBA
    D. Is Whitaker nailed on? (better 4.2 option)

    Thanks in advance h

            Soldado ➡ Rooney
Yaya ➡ Mirallas (still think he's good value)

Improve that defense and downgrade a mid, you have to bench one of them, every week.

Indeed. Once they cross 100% they'll go up. Enrique struck me as being a strange one to climb so fast but I guess they're at home against a gunshy Southampton and with Johnson out/Agger a doubt and the uncertaintly of Toure Vs. Sakho, he's the only one nailed on apart from Migs

The trick with this game seems to be looking out for players that haven't been playing for whatever reason but will, e.g. new signing, coming back from injury, someone ahead of them in the pecking order returning from injury, sitting out 3 games in protest and the club not letting you leave.

Kompany strikes me as a good pick for this week. I know he's got a tough fixture but at 8.0 you'd expect him to get some points for interceptions, clearances, etc.
