Among the key issues being mulled over on the boards this week were whether Arsenal’s Welsh midfield dynamo Aaron Ramsey is now essential and which of Liverpool’s sharp shooters to invest in. We also find our resident β€œfalling stars” expert in fine fettle, there’s an analysis of a new phenomenon of goalkeeper assists and we also take a look at the latest goings on in our community leagues.

Hottest Topics

A Defender’s Nightmare wonders whether Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey is now essential. The self-confessed β€œbitter non-Ramsey owner” asked for the community’s views after missing out on yet another points haul from the talented young Welshman.

Another transfer headache to vex the community this week is which of Liverpool’s star strikers to invest in. Among those to answer Giggs Boson’s post on the issue was Viperstripes and Daniel, who advocate finding a place for both Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge in our Fantasy teams.

Just how do we measure the potential of strikers like Suarez and Sturridge? Goals is the obvious attribute to consider but The Sports Guy has gone further creating a mathematical way of measuring a raft of other key indicators. Among the factors he has considered are fixtures, form, set piece potential, risk of injury and whether the striker is captain material.

Wakey was in jubilant mood this week after scoring some notable successes with his Falling Stars selections, a tag handed to those whose price has dropped since Gameweek 1. Michu and Stephane Sessegnon were among his successful Gameweek 5 picks. For his Gameweek 6 selection he gains further bragging rights as it included Luis Suarez and Romelu Lukaku, who both went into the weekend below their initial price tags and returned with heavy points hauls.

Mark and Granville will be among those wishing they’d read Isacki’s illuminating post on Stoke’s Marko Arnautovic. The pair both drafted in the out of position Austrian midfielder ahead of Gameweek 6 but Isacki’s analysis takes the wheels and axis off this particular bandwagon. Damningly against Arsenal in Gameweek 5 Isacki refers to the player as β€œvery apathetic” – will his new owners now be saying hasta la vista to Arnautovic after another abject display against Norwich in Gameweek 6?

Many of the community’s more experienced Fantasy managers are struggling to gain a foothold on this season. We offered five top tips to climbing up the rankings for the community to mull over. Among those to offer further advice was falling star man Wakey, who urges poor performing managers to keep an eye on the plummeting prices of players set to return over the coming weeks. Bows and Bluetiger were among those to also advocate some pride-swallowing points-chasing.

Never captain, never bench is the old saying for Leighton Baines. But is that the case this season? Going into Gameweek 6 Viperstripes certainly thinks he is a credible contender for the armband, although his blank against Newcastle this week provides an equally powerful counterargument.

Sarjeant was putting his abacus through its paces this week as he looked at the teams with the highest average ownership. This offers an interesting insight into where the majority of Fantasy managers are investing their money and a handy guide to were some hidden differentials may reside. West Brom looks an ideal place to find differentials in particular, he found.

Gameweek 6 saw the start of what Nedfoo believes could a new trend of goalkeeper assists. American goalkeepers Tim Howard and Brad Guzan both assisted during the week and Nedfoo wonders whether goalkeeper training in the US is a factor.

Scored asked for the community’s ideas for new rule changes to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with quirky suggestions especially welcome. Among ideas that caught the eye were Jafalad’s suggestion that any player under 5m be awarded 10 points. Tokyored wants to see any player who bites an opponent immediately docked 10 points; a sure fire way to ensure the Sturridge versus Suarez debate ends swiftly.

Another rule change some are calling for surrounds player sell-on prices. Hooperman sparked this interesting debate on whether the current system is fair.

Community Leagues

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First – 2Million+ Club, for those with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five game weeks, there are now four teams that have breached the 500,000 ranking barrier. Ten of the 23 entered are now in the top 1,000,000. Bales of Fury and Norfolk-In-Chance top the league with an overall rank of 288,416.

Bowie topped Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing competition with a haul of 89 points. There are 801 players remaining with 46 eliminated. The safety score this week was 38. Meanwhile, Mike Knight got 69 points in his Early Bird competition, where there are just 11 survivors after 3 got knocked out. Entry is still open to those who qualify, details here.

The In Tommy We Trust All Things league leaders are La Roja, Chilin, Dude, Lawndart, Crouch Potato and Binij.

The Long and Winding Road league leaders are Hay Number 2, Canadian Football, IAmSuarez, Demented Flamingo, ManAmongst, Iain_90 and Beric, who also tops the LAWR main league.

In Thomas and Peppie&Felix‘s Friends Life the league leaders are Thomass, Daniel and Al Pacino.

Meanwhile, in the FFS UEFA leagues Grubs, the manager of Villarreal, was the round’s highest scorer with 82 points. He was followed closely by EpicFail with 80 points, who also gets the Order of Valour Award by handling Suarez the armband in his first game in the Premier League, along with owning Lukaku.

Doctor X, who represents AZ Alkmaar in the Rest of Europe league, is the only manager to have an unblemished record as he celebrated his sixth consecutive victory. FFS UEFA also have a new team H2H competition starting soon. Full details will be revealed this Sunday on their blog.

Hmmm...tough one Zep. Let's say they all play.

Utd cs so 6pts each for Evra/Vid
ARS up against WBA so I'd say Ramsay will win that one
Suaz will score more than Studge
      Giroud will do Luk.

      A for me.

Yeah it'll be close... but I think I might just have the edge providing Suarez doesn't hugely outscore Sturridge...

Captaincy could also be a factor...

Don't blame me, I voted for Fredo.

            My current theory on strikers.

1 from: Rooney, Aguero, The Hatable One
1 from: Sturridge, Giroud, Bentenke, Soldado, Negredo
1 from: Lukaku, Lambert, Remy, Dzeko

Always an easy lateral transfer if there's a problem (health, red card, long-term suspension). Always balance in the team so there's funds for other positions.

I am sure he will, but when? Might take a while for the team to gel with all the new faces. Spurs are winning, but they're not exactly scoring prolifically, and there are many players on the team capable of scoring. Their defense seems a better investment than guessing which ones will score week to week.

These figures work better in fantasy games with small numbers like 2 teams of cricket rather than FPL. To have such a high ownership, they would probably be the best value for money player around.

              No i"m not saying that.

I'm saying look at form/fixtures and decide. If 99% of the 2.5mill playing the game
think the same way then you then so be it.

I had rvp in my team 2 weeks ago. 33% of the herd still do. I don't.

What I'm trying to say is at what level of ownership would you be scared to not have a player in case they perform well and so many other people do. Surely there's a figure for this based of personal opinions?

Sure if you don't have that player. Ramsey & Ozil made the average quite high in GW5 due to their high ownership.

                      it's not about the percentage

might just as well say that it's scary not to have Suarez now, because he only has 10% ownership, which means he is probably the best differential you will get all season

glass half full or half empty sort of thing

btw, to become "essential" (not good terminology btw) the player must deliver so many points on a regular basis that it makes no sense not having him

If they are failing with high ownership then you are likely ahead of the pack. If they fire then you fall behind. It's more the case in a mini league where the rest of your ML has someone & covering them makes them useless until players stay taking him out.

RVPs ownership did in GW1. If you have players matching his output then it isn't an issue. Not a reason to have a player though. In the end FPL is won by points, scored them whatever way you like. Get the 99% player for good fixtures & transfer out for bad run or whatever.

I've worded all this completely wrong. What I'm trying to get at is at what point would you or anyone else be scared that a certain player will do well before the matches kick off, because they have such a high ownership. Regardless of how they actually perform.

Ramsey is 40%. If the top 30% in FPL have him then there's your answer. It depends on what ranks the ownership occurs at also.

Dead teams aren't a factor really & could supply 10% of the ownership. Obviously not in the case of Ramsey.

I tend to find the nature of the owners more significant than the degree. I'd be more annoyed by a player scoring with 10% ownership if those owners were clued up FPL players, credible rivals, than a player with 30% ownership amongst people who I don't perceive as threats.

I'm a thoroughly average player by the standard of these boards, I guess ultimately what I'm saying is I get more annoyed when a player attracting interest on this site does well than when a player with higher ownership but no traction on here does.

No player is ever truly essential.

I think those that come closest are nailed on players, scoring well most weeks but "Essentially" at bargain prices. Cheap players scoring very well are hard to argue against as the budget balancing argument goes out the window.

I don't think ownership can be used to ascertain a player's worth. I never even look at that stat as it holds no credibility imo.

A player's consistent form is often the basis for essentaility.

Been thinking about this recently , I think it's where I go wrong .
As a a gambler all my life I'm hard coded to go against the crowd , it's the only way .
But in FF that isn't the way ?.It's best to go with the crowd ...for the obvious price rises & form of the player ....and it's they safety net
But I prefer less ownership . If 99% of you all brought in Bentdner this week I am not worried or bringing him in.
I can nowaybe take points of everyone and fly up the table .

Terry seems to be nailed on as they come for mou and collins hasnt got the greatest run of fixtures... and suarez returning, well that is something I simply cannot afford to miss out on, plus nobody in my ML has him yet so could be the differential for me.

The stats show he could be potentially an assist machine, at arsenal but I dont think that he will be racking up as much as the likes of giroud, ramsey etc. They have played as much as he has and are on about 40 odd points after GW6 whereas Ozil is on 22...

You got to look at the facts, Ozil had the likes of Ronaldo, Benzema and Higuain to name a few at RM to finish off all the assists he gave and Ozil has now only got maybe 1 or 2. over 10m for an assist machine is too much for me I am gambling lets hope it pays off!

Other strikers are Giroud and Lukaku (also have Ozil)

Never understood this line of thought Flynny. Why does it matter? It's about whether Suarez will score more than Rooney.

Yeah Wild Rover, I agree - both Rooney and Suarez have form and fixtures though. Its a tough call! Just appreciate any advice that might help! (Moyes has already said Rooney will play after his injury, but I cant trust him lol!)

PS. Buy some damn shin pads, Rooney.

Could be very close between Suarez and Rooney. Really down to whether you think Rooney will play. I'd leave it till Saturday for any news.

So weird that i actually expect a defender to cover a hit this season over a midfielder 😯
For eg i can do either
Collins to Walker/Terry for a hit and play them over Reid. with their CS and bap potential i expect them to cover the hit.
Whereas takin a hit to replace Barfa/Mirallas for Eriksen/Paulinho/Mata just seems like throwing away 4 points.

      Looks q good.

I think there's a few questions you need to address around some of the players. Namely:
      - Will Toure continue in the 3 man defence?
      - Is Dawson a better buy than Walker and save yourself 1 mill?
      - Sigurdson: how permanent is his form and position?
      - Oscar: prolific enough?

Thank you for answering. Love the fact that the questions you ask is the same players I have been insecure of. And i agree with everything you write. Here is what im thinking: (Sorry for my bad english πŸ™ )

        - Toure is not nailed on, but I think Toure, Sakho, Agger is the best options in a 3 man defence
        - I want Walkers attacking points, and if he don`t performs its time for Rafael/Vidic
        - No doubt, Siggy is a gamble. One weak match and he is most likely on the bench the next one, but if he keeps scoring he can be a monster signing. Not sold on Eriksen yet.
        - I really want some Chelsea cover, and I think Oscar is the most secure starter offensively for them. Again, quit a gamble, but can be switched with Nani/Valencia if he gets 2 or 3 points every week

Despite your reputation I always take your views seriously. Do you think Walker is a better option than Terry for the next 10 weeks. I am inclined to Terry but there is always the risk of rotation with him and injury due to his age. Walker has no rotation worries and is young enough to play all the games
