Our preview of the weekend fixtures outlines the Scout’s agenda – our points of interest that will come under focus when the Gameweek action gets underway. The Liverpool and United strike pairings, England’s new darling and a pair of young starlets stirring up the budget midfield market are on our hit-list.

Suarez vs Sturridge Part Three
So far, it’s gone the way of Daniel Sturridge. A brace of assists helped the England striker outscore Luis Suarez on his return at the Stadium of Light and Gameweek 7’s maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus haul ensured he emerged as victor in the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace. Sturridge owners have earned four points more than those who opted for Uruguayan over the past two matches, with the former Chelsea man grabbing an 18-point armband haul against the Eagles. With 1.4 between them in price, Sturridge undoubtedly has the advantage going into the trip to Newcastle – if that one also falls in his favour, it will be interesting to see if the confidence in Suarez takes a dent.

Glen Johnson’s Return
Back in training this week, the fleet-footed right-back has been dearly missed by Brendan Rodgers, who has shifted his formation to compensate for the lack of a suitable replacement. Johnson’s return to the frame could be significant for Fantasy managers, who will have themselves a raiding full-back in an accomplished defence for 5.8 in the FPL – making him the cheapest secure starter in the Liverpool rearguard along with the favoured keeper, Simon Mignolet. It’s uncertain whether Rodgers will persevere with the 3-4-1-2 on Johnson’s return – if he does, and a wing-back role awaits, his potential would be boosted further.

Wenger’s Teamsheet
With Santi Cazorla expected to return and Theo Walcott also rumoured to be in the frame if he can prove his fitness, Arsene Wenger’s burgeoning options are set to hand him an immediate selection headache. Mikel Arteta now seems installed in central midfield alongside the tenacious talents of Mathiu Flamini, so Wenger looks to have three slots to fill with Mesut Ozil surely untouchable for one berth. Aaron Ramsey’s withdrawal on 59 minutes at West Brom raised some minor alarm bells and, with Cazorla, Walcott and Jack Wilshere now competing with the Welshman for two shirts, we look to be heading into a prolonged period of uncertainty when it comes to Wenger’s teamsheet. That may even start with Saturday’s home Emirates encounter with Norwich. Ozil’s owners will certainly be hoping the knee problem sustained against Sweden last night doesn’t force him out or persuade the Gunners boss to rest the German.

Januzaj’s Pitchtime
Having won the three points at Sunderland with two sublime strikes, United’s starlet has leapt onto our radars and earned two FPL price rises. At just 4.9, the youngster is the latest cut-price midfield asset to demand our attention and, potentially, he could go on to rival the bandwagons of both Ramsey and Everton’s Ross Barkley. Much depends on David Moyes. I’m expecting Saturday’s teamsheet to reward Januzaj with another opportunity to impress but events could go either way. Put in another convincing display and a continued run of starts may come his way; fail to reproduce his form at the Stadium of Light and it’s likely we’ll see him earn an hour before giving way to the experience of Ashley Young or Nani. That outcome would cast doubt over his place in the United pecking order and temper the current rate of investment.

The Van Persie & Rooney Tallies
The Old Trafford meeting with the Saints is significant for Januzaj’s Fantasy prospects but perhaps vital to those of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. With back-to-back home matches to come, owners of the United strike pairing will be depending on returns to reward the patience that has seen them resist the allure of doubling on Liverpool’s forward line, or perhaps joining the wave of support for Everton’s Romelu Lukakau. Both Rooney and Van Persie enjoyed profitable international breaks – confidence should be high, then. Draw a blank against resilient Southampton, however, and Fantasy managers will continue to question whether Moyes’ tactics and approach are hampering the potential output of his strikers.

The Arnautovic Starting Role
Handed the job of leading the line in the 1-0 defeat at Fulham, Marko Arnautovic fired in more shots on goal than any other midfielder in Gameweek 7. While that hints at the potential on offer, there are real and growing concerns in the Potteries that Mark Hughes’ tactics have dulled Stoke’s cutting edge further. With just a single goal in their last four league outings, the Britannia clash with West Brom is a vital one, both for Hughes and for Arnautovic’s Fantasy appeal. If he is deployed as the central striker again and succeeds in breaking Stoke’s drought, the Austrian’s bandwagon will surely be underway.

Morrison Against Toure
Ravel Morrison’s form is undeniable. A superb solo effort at Spurs in Gameweek 7 was followed by a brace for England’s Under 21 side this week, as Morrison continues to show the talent that once had Sir Alex Ferguson purring. Fantasy managers are coming round to his appeal now that his starting role is firming up. At just 4.4 in midfield, I’ve been viewing the Hammers prospect as an “enabler” – a bit-part Fantasy asset with a price tag that liberates funds. However, Morrison can be far more than that. Given his form, there’s an argument to suggest that Morrison could be a regular Fantasy starter, even in a 3-4-3. His display against City sharing the pitch with the formidable Yaya Toure, will go a long way to show both Sam Allardyce and us Fantasy managers that he means business and is here to stay.

The West Ham full-backs
Despite decent defensive form, Big Sam has taken to rotating his back four in recent weeks. James Collins has lost out to James Tomkins and now Allardyce seems unsure on his first choice full-backs. Having brought Razvan Rat into the starting lineup, he dumped Guy Demel to the bench in Gameweek 6, only to restore him at the expense of Joey O’Brien for the win at Spurs last time out. Despite some tricky fixtures to come, Fantasy managers will continue to consider the West Ham defence following the shut-out at Spurs. Some clarity on personnel would be useful, otherwise our targets could be limited to Winston Reid and Jussi Jaaskelainen in goal.

Silva’s Impact on City
The influence of David Silva in City’s win over Everton was there for all to see. Returning to Manuel Pellegrini’s lineup for the first time since Gameweek 3, Silva immediately returned an assist while his prompting and probing helped link play and unlock the Toffees defence. City already top the goal charts, without yet providing a key target for Fantasy managers. Another slick performance from Silva, perhaps providing the catalyst for more goals from Alvaro Negredo or Sergio Aguero in the process, could change that.

Townsend’s Domestic Form
As England’s new darling, Andros Townsend will take superb form and confidence into Tottenham’s trip to Villa, just as Aaron Lennon makes a return to fitness to challenge his starting role. Townsend will surely start in the Midlands and will earn further opportunity to cement his starting berth in the light of renewed competition. So far, Fantasy returns have been minimal but the stats in our members area suggest that Townsened’s propensity to shoot will eventually bring rewards once Spurs click as an attacking force. At just 5.5, Townsend could yet emerge as the key differential target in Andre Villas-Boas’ midfield while all the attention has been on Christian Eriksen, Paulinho and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Benteke Effect
Paul Lambert is remaining coy on the fitness of his star striker but, having trained and featured on Belgium’s bench, Benteke looks set to play some part against Spurs. I’ll be anticipating an instant impact – a rejuvenation of Villa’s attacking threat following the blank at Hull last time out. His fitness and sharpness will need to be assessed but, if he comes through Sunday’s encounter, there’s no question that Benteke will be back on the radar and force us to reconsider our chosen front three once again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What's everyones favourite thing about ENGLISH football? Pick three things.

    1. Fighting spirit - we get stuck in no matter what. No stupid scarves in winter, no gloves, tough challenges and we get up quickly and get on with things.
    2. Fair play - we don't crowd the ref we don't dive we don't cheat
    3. Simplicity - no fancy tricks and no million side passes half a year. Cross it in, head it, done

But what's this about technical deficiencies they're not brain surgeons

Sorry the passing isn't 'subtle' or whatever other #### the commentators love to say but what's the point of all those delicate touches its a hard and fast mans contact game

And what's wrong with the training methods players are bigger stronger faster than everyone else and would smash them in a fight too lol does the job

Technical flaws - a lot of players can't even trap the ball properly and aren't good in possession under pressure.

This is one of the reasons why England may never progress - fans will shout to hoof the ball clear (players from other countries play the ball out, in fact in NL the fans will often boo if a long ball is launched).

There are far fewer qualified coaches there than in any other country, until recently 11 a side full pitch games were the norm for even under 11s - ridiculous - other countries have been working on their kids skills and as a result have had success.

Players aren't bigger, many countries have taller players. But anyway, WFT, that's not a point to make.

Repost Reason we don't worry about 'trapping' is because if we tried it a center back would smash through our shins and win the ball back

Also what's wrong with full size pitches that's what the lads will be playing on

I have a coaching license and learnt about conditioning and tactics

Get them running get them in the weights room get them running over the other team

One team we played again was full of players like you said. We won 5-2 and I don't think a lot of them were walking properly for a few months. Should of released the ball early lads hahahaha

Full pitches are never going to help refine skills. You spend most of the time running around. Also youths should play their football in the summer. This is the problem, attempting to adapt them to the same conditions for an adult is just plain daft when they don't have the physicality or maturity to do so.

Start training at five turn pro at 16 you've got 11 years of 11 a side which is what we play

Start at 11 or 14 and you've only got 2 to 5 years experience

Think this small pitch thing is just a fad like formations and 'false nines' and 'playmakers' everything comes round

we need to play a bit like how liverpool are playing now or how chelsea were playing when mourinho came first time

                  You've summed a lot up.

                  YOU HAVE A COACHES LICENSE.

Listen to the ideas you have.
Now ask why England never win things.
Whereas Spain, Brazil etc do whilst doing all the opposites to your ideas.

The reasonEngland dont win is coaches like you.
                  Sorry, but it is.

You coached a team to smash the other side physically and build themselves up etc.
What happens when the opposite side are also big, like say, Germany, but are also technically gifted?

                  Answer? England will lose.
Physical battles are fine and at youth level, it'll win games.
But when smaller gifted players mature physically, you're guys are left trailing.

            this is true.
played on full sized pitches between the ages of 6-9 in england, then moved to belgium and was on smaller pitches with smaller goals for the next 2 seasons, before only moving to full sized pitches and goals at 11. it wasn't just a joke that shooting high enough meant an almost certain goal in england, it was a corner from the right (am a lefty) was a big goalscoring opportunity, curl it high enough and you can score

For me the magic of our football is the way that a lad can be working in a sausage factory one week and playing centre forward for England in front of 80,000 at Wembley the next. That just doesn't happen in other countries.

      1 thing.

Getting up at stupid o clock on a non-work day, driving for x amount of hours in a cramped car with other blokes belching and farting, paying crazy money in a service station for food/drink, being herded like cattle in away ends without shelter, getting beat 4-0 in hailstones and being mocked by home fans, seeing your players walk off without any concern for what you have gone through.

Then do it all again the following fortnight....

On a lighter note the 3 I would go for (though not really about the game) are:

      1) Humorous football songs and banter between fans
      2) Sports Report theme music and classified results read by JAG (not the woman)
      3) Match Of The Day

      1. Booing their own players before it was fashionable.
      2. Showing humility by allowing themselves to be technically outplayed by teams like Nagorno Karabakh.

        Well, to enter into the spirit of things in that case;

        1. Two of the best football songs ever (World in Motion and Three Lions).
        2. THAT Stuart Pearce Penalty.
        3. I'm struggling for a third but it's bound to involve Terry Butcher, Gazza or Beckham scoring against Greece...

"3 Lions" was all about hope and belief despite the many years of hurt experienced by England football fans, but the years of hurt are still increasing. It did not go with a performance to match that of '66, when I don't think we even had a song.

We still had a very good team in '70, when "Back Home" was probably our first national football anthem, but a different kind - it was the England World Cup Squad singing to the fans back home rather than something that the fans themselves could join in with.

Spain are essentially what you've said you dislike with your silly statement about football being a purely physical game. It's not anymore.
Spain have wiped the floor with everyone recently I'm sure you know.
Other favourites for the next World Cup (Germany, Brazil etc) are sides technically superior to England.
If you honestly think hard tackling centre halfs and centre mids who are alright at passing but prefer getting stuck in is the way to go - then you're watching a different game to everybody else I'm afraid.
Obviously a degree of fitness, size, strength and grit is needed.. But a negative approach to technique is not what your national team needs

If you press a high line and are allowed by the ref to go in hard with tackles then if you are a Brazil or Germany you will whip spain. Look at the Confederations Cup if you don't believe me.

England, judging by some of the backward comments made in the last thread, won't win the world cup sadly in the next 20 years.

I would be over-the-moon if we made the Semi's and Baines shot us through with a penalty.

Small pitches and playing all positions ala Ajax Barca Belgium is the future. Weather is worse in Holland so this is a crappy excuse.

Being comfortable on the ball is essential for the goalkeeper never mind the rest of the team!

Sturridge or Lukaku although would be a little worried with the laters game time. If Martinez came out and said he looks good for 90 minutes then would be tempted to go with him. If you fancy a punt to help jump the rankings a bit then Michu could be an option.

Lukaku IMO. I'm a big fan of giving the armband to someone at home, it feels safer and you are more likely to catch an explsion. He has probably got the best form out of that list bar Sturridge. Also, see bookies odds 3 posts down..

        Indeed

The last 3 are not even close to valid, they are punts. Oscar would be a decent shout if we knew with 100% certainty he'd start. That leaves the first 4 as legitimate options

Hi all, I thought I’d post the bookies odds on scoring this weekend to help with the captain choice. Take from it what you will, but according to the bookies Giroud is more than twice as likely to score 2 goals or more than Suarez or Sturridge!

      Anytime Goal Scorer;

      Giroud 20/21 (1.05)
      RVP 20/21 (1.05)
      Lukaku 11/10 (0.909)
      Michu 13/10 (0.769)
      Sturridge 13/10 (0.769)
      Suarez 13/10 (0.769)
      Rooney 6/4 (0.667)

      To Score 2 Or More Goals;

      Giroud 9/2 (0.222)
      RVP 9/2 (0.222)
      Lukaku 11/2 (0.182)
      Michu 6/1 (0.167)
      Rooney 8/1 (0.125)
      Sturridge 11/1 (0.091)
      Suarez 11/1 (0.091)

I know there are some fine margins but every little helps. Cheers

Hi guys, haven't been on the boards for a couple of weeks. Did an early FT, Rooney > Lukaku. Any other pressing changes anyone can suggest?

          Mig
          Coleman Ivanovic Vidic
          Michu Ozil Amalfitano Moses
          Lukaku Suarez Giroud

          4.0, JWP Chester Turner

3.2m in the bank, looking to upgrade DEF and MID over the next few weeks. Moses has been really frustrating, thinking of getting rid...but worth a hit this week? Thanks.

Not sure whether bringing him in against City is the best, timing wise. Reckon Moses will be in the starting 11 this week? Keeping in mind Coutinho might be back.

yep if i bring in walcott, it will be for Ozil. Just feel that Moses and JWP need to go asap.

                    Have JWP myself (see below).

In your case I'd play Moses another week then I'd prob spend some money getting rid of Moses. Oscar is best bet for the cash you have, but you could just get Barkley/Brady/Janz for JWP & still have cash to play with

          Have a dilemma....... Would you:

          A) Do JWP > Barkley (-4pts) this week then do Lamps > Paulinho/Siggy the following week. Can play Barkley and bench Whittingham who is away at Chelsea.

          B) Don't take a hit, then next week Lamps > Wally and just play Whitts this week & next.

Leaning towards A) so that I can get rid of deadwood JWP and not have to play Whitts for his tough fixtures. The big downside being that ill have to find some other way of getting Wally.

            I'd do A.

Chances are Whittingham will get a 2 pointer. In addition to Barkley, would also consider Townsend who's looked really sharp for both club and country.

            What was your FT though?

Reason we don't worry about 'trapping' is because if we tried it a center back would smash through our shins and win the ball back

Really disagree if its your genuine feeling.

We should be looking to Germany for the way forward. Physical football backed up with great technical skills. Better than tiki taka and a lot more realistically achievable for English players (will take a long time though)

We've had our own style for many a year now. Hoof it, chase it and treat the ball like its a scorching hot potato that can't be retained for any length of time.

Why shouldn't we look at other nations who have taken a Frankly excellent and long term approach to the training and development of their players.

Are you scared we might actually do well, and have a chance to win something in the future and we'll all have nothing to moan at?

That's a tough one. Moses you'd expect to start, whereas Brady could be at risk of a cameo if he doesn't. Probably Moses for me. Everton are decent, and Newcastle could be without Coloccini. Think that outweighs Brady's set piece threat if he does start.

Rather wait for Wenger's word tomorrow. Arsenal are in the process of hearing back from Germany about the injury. Even if he is fit, no guarantee he'll start with Rosicky and Cazorla now in the frame.

A lot riding how? It's 3 points like every other game. I'm not trying to scaremonger, or suggest anything, but you can't rule it out. He wouldn't be dropped, more not risked. I have him and it's worrying until we hear anything definitive from Wenger

Their position in the league that is how, this season they are in with a shout. It's only 3pts like every other game if you win. Cazorla may be fit again, however cannot be match fit. I have him also, not bothered if he plays, however will be stunned if Wenger drops him if fit.

Looks like we both agree on Ozil being important to Arsenal. Could lean both ways then. Not risked because of the knock or played because of the need for 3 points, despite viable replacements. Agree to disagree on that

Even is Ozil isn't fit, Wilshere, Arteta, Flamini and possibly Caz all are
