This week has seen the re-emergence of rotating defender strategies, a concept long thought lost, as premium defenders dominated the scoring in the first few weeks of the season.  The community has also been taking a look at potential improvements to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and its bonus points system, as well as airing their ongoing frustrations surrounding those pesky Yaya Toure- and Aaron Ramsey-owning casuals. We catch up with the week’s discussions, along with the very latest in our community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Among our most popular posts this week was Maxi’s soapbox-style discussion about team value and his criticism of those placing too much emphasis on how much their Fantasy squad is worth. He ponders whether money made on a player that is a season keeper really matters.

The structure and rules of the FPL game also came under discussion this week, courtesy of Evs. Among ideas to improve the game was Stinkfly’s suggestion that managers be restricted to just two players per team. Also, Gimli Son Of Gloin wants keepers to be given more points for a clean sheet, while Ryan called for defensive midfielders to get rewarded for their hard work protecting the backline.

Granville was also on hand to say his piece, aiming his ire specifically the Bonus Points System (BPS). He was concerned that a whopping seven players gained bonus points during Crystal Palace’s largely drab 1-0 victory over West Ham. Could the BPS be improved? Champ certainly thinks so, with his call to “bring back the man in the stands”.

With premium midfielders starting to pick up points, those who sing at the church of cheap defensive rotation were in good voice this week. Innsie’s post looking at the best options was particularly good, particularly for those already with a Crystal Palace defender. Bankst was another looking at rotation options, this time focusing on goalkeepers. A blend of Cardiff stopper David Marshall and Palace’s Julián Speroni was picked out as particularly enticing.

Talking of keepers, Evs was one of many in the unenviable predicament of having both his stoppers, Southampton’s Artur Boruc and Kelvin Davis, injured going into Gameweek 14. During his discussion about what his fellow sufferers plan to do he talked up (and ended up drafting in) Manchester City’s goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, while Hamerstergod was eyeing up Cardiff’s Marshall.

Boruc’s injury will have come as a blow to many a “casual manager” – those who put their trust in the bandwagons and adopt a fire-and-forget policy. On that front, HVT had a go at creating the the definitive ‘casual’ team. True to form this season, it turns out that he created a pretty impressive lineup.

And finally, ahead of Gameweek 14, Konig Luther provided this interesting post about how many points are needed to reach key ranking achievements. Giggs Boson was among those pleased to discover he was just a whisker away from the top 10,000 at the time.

Community Leagues & Cups

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing League has lost another 62 managers across Gameweeks 13 and 14, leaving 488 to continue on.

Evs, Bootsy, Athletico Timbo, Crouch Potato, Chazza and Koneheads currently lead In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues.  Meanwhile, his cup competition has reached the quarter finals stage with La Roja among the community names still involved.

In Fifa Las Vegas’s ‘Championship style’ competitionSomebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up and Champ are currently embroiled in the final, which is taking place over Gameweek 15.

A reminder that the FFS Paddy Power Cup Third Round was played out over this weekned’s matches – we’ll bring you a full run-down of the results and the draw for the next round on Tuesday.

I have a lot of faith in our attacking returns this season but absolutely none in our defensive capabilities.

It's a bit of myth to say Kompany coming back will change everything.

I can see us being relatively frail all season.

I'm not saying we'll leak goals left, right and centre but we will definitely struggle at the back.

At the minute we have to score 2 to win the game and there's no obvious sign of that changing.

Repost, managed to hit rock bottom of the page

Some advice would be much appreciated, having no Everton making me nervous.

Going to stick with SAR for now so Lukaku not an option. Everton midfield a bit of a no go zone due to Barkley and Mirallas / Deulofou rest and rotation. So its the defence then.

Thinking Coleman is the way to go due to combo of attacking threat and decent BAP potential for a full-back. Therefore I think Mert > Coleman is the right move

My plan would then be to lose Ivan next week, could lose him this week but feel like I want to give my double Chelsea one last chance home to palace as it has failed spectacularly over the last 3 that I have had it.

Or I could lose Shaw for Distin but not sure Distin will meet my Everton "coverage" need.

    What do you think?

    Marshall, 4.0
    Ivan, Terry, Shaw (Mert, Ward)
    Hazard, Ramsey, Sess, Shelvey (Brady)

Double chelski in defence on current form is the reason why the team is out of shape. Great up front though....

Sooner you get rid of Ivan, the better. Given the fixtures, Mert> Coleman is the best move. Dump Ivan the week after for a possible double everton in defense.

He has been very good over the past few weeks, his returns don't tell the full story.

He's a much better goalscorer than Silva and at the moment, he's undropable.

I don't like making purchases on players just coming back from injury. High probability he will only play part of the match if at all. I have had Nasri for a while btw thinking about selling him, but like you have yet to decide upon a replacement. If Oscar is fit may be best way to go

Panti did well on the weekend. Beaten by an admittedly wonder goal.
Captain Kompany is still a beast. He just needs to build on a partnership with either Demi or Nasty. I'm still undecided about his partner in crime..

We have the right guys for a solid defence to be able to shut people out. It's just about managing to get the right combination and for a little bit of luck.

Too depressing to talk about. Shocking turnaround since the home series, really don't see them fixing the probs any time soon.

Loved the predictions before the series started. Plenty of quiet posters now. I went 2-1 Australia. 🙂

Brought in Howard last night, and now he's on 4 yellows, anyone else worried he could be missing a match soon?

      Price.

People who can't afford Coleman can't afford Jags so they are going for Distin.

People who can afford Jags can also afford Coleman, who is a bigger points threat.

Simple. Coleman is viewed as more likely to get attacking returns. And Distin saves you ~0.7 with the same likely BP reutrns.

distin does not have the same likely BP returns.. he gets 0 with Jags always getting 3! Coleman is more likely to get attacking returns but i thought jags bonus points would definitely make up for that!

Jag on 18 BP and Distin on 6. So, is the extra 0.7 worth it ? That's the question lad.

Yes, Migs for Howard was stupid. A transfer for a non-injured GK is dumb. So, hold, deal with it next week.

i dont think it was that dumb at all.
pool concede for fun and everton are bossing it with lovely fixtures for some time now.
        i just did shaw>chester + krul>howard -4.
howards easily going to make up the hit so its no problem.
im going to leave gerrard and wait for news. you can always just play your 5th mid

Well, we don't know whether Howard will top Mignolet by 4 over the next 4-6 games. But hamstrings are hamstrings. 2 weeks minimum. No reason to swap GK on Sunday.

if you had lallana what would you do with him?

3 of his last 4 was against arsenal, chelsea, city. prior to that he had 3 double digit scores in 5 gameweeks. however, watching him bring in one and two pointers the past weeks have been discouraging.

stick or twist? if twist, for whom?
