Strikers preoccupied the community this week, with replacements for the injured Sergio Aguero being sought and Fantasy managers wondering if Luis Suarez would go on to make Fantasy Football history. Elsewhere, we examine how those early kick-off myths were dispelled once and for all and take time to catch up with the latest goings-on in our community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Sergio Aguero’s calf injury and subsequent month-long lay off shook up the community’s frontlines this week. As we hurriedly looked to replace the Manchester City striker, Nice To Finally Michu was on hand to weigh up the replacements.

The Sarjeant was also looking at Aguero replacements, but instead focusing on some key differential options. Gary Hooper and Dimitar Berbatov were among those he was eyeing up. In RonH’s post, Negredo emerged as the ready-made replacement for Aguero. Ronh rolled out statistics and fixture analysis to construct a convincing case, portraying the Spaniard as the clear standout option.

City’s midfield assets the focus of Your Mum’s Athletic‘s hot topic. He examined the merits of Yaya Toure and David Silva, with the Ivory Coast international having the edge, based on his analysis.

Luis Suarez was not put forward as a replacement for Aguero, mainly because of the assumption that he’s already a mainstay in our lineups. The Uruguyan continues to look unstoppable and, given that most will be captaining him for the foreseeable future, we asked how Fantasy managers can counter the Suarez effect. Will was amongst those to chip in, citing investment in midfield with a cheaper defence as a potential route of exploration.

The 3rd Turd is so impressed with Suarez’s displays that he even believes he will become the first Fantasy Premier League player to breach the 300 points barrier. His trip down memory lane looking back on the previous season’s top points scorers proved one of the most popular posts this week.

Finally, our watchlist guru, Green Windmill, found some time to finally prove that the results of the early kick-offs are no different to those at other times. Of course, we knew that all along but that won’t stop us letting the live cameras have their say when it comes to our transfers.

The Community Tournaments

Breaching the top 100,000 seemed like an impossible dream at the start of the season for those taking part in HeelsOverHead’s Worst to First 2 Million Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks. However, Bales of Fury has already achieved that landmark feat, and was sitting pretty with a rank of 72,143 going into Gameweek 17. Seven teams are in the top 250,000 and in poll position to mirror his achievement.

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing league, 35 managers departed during Gameweek 16, leaving 411 to fight another day. To join TM’s upcoming midseason leagues, click here.

Those leading In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues are Evs, Bootsy, Athletico Timbo, Crouch Potato, Wslnpt and Koneheads. Tony Hibbert is the favourite to lift Tommy’s AT50Q competition trophy after going into Gameweek 17 with an overall rank of 570.

I don't think Mert is worth 0.7 more than any of them. I'd like Koscielny, but if he's not fit I'd probably go Sagna (simply because he's less likely to get rotated with Jenkinson than Gibbs is with Monreal).

Same here. I missed out on Coleman early on. When he was about 5.5, I brought in Distin for 5.0.

At the time, I thought I'd save the 0.5. 🙁

      B) But I would go Koscielny (if fit) or Sagna over Mert I reckon. And save the 0.7.

Unless the 0.7 makes no difference to you between now and the Jan WC.

(my situation is different since bringing in Coleman brings more goal threat than Jagielka. Plus Coleman should rise 0.3 this week, which could become something really significant by the time I wildcard).

Some news before the Arsenal v Chelsea game if it hasn't been circulated already. Wenger says he will rest Ozil at some point (particularly in light of him being used to having a winter break), but confirms he will start against Chelsea. Source is the Arseblog newsletter.

"Very quiet again this morning before things ramp up tomorrow ahead of the game against Chelsea. Some interesting bits and pieces from the manager though.

I wondered, at some point last week, if we might need to take into account the fact that Mesut Ozil has played his entire career in leagues which have a winter break. It's something the manager is considering too, but fear not, there's no chance of him not playing against Chelsea. Arsene says:

'In Germany, they have a break and we had this same situation with Jens Lehmann in his first season here. We have to give Mesut a break - but not tomorrow night. He has played a lot, but we have had a little break since we played last Saturday at Manchester City and, hopefully, he has recovered.'

It's odd that he referenced Jens who, as a goalkeeper, probably won't have felt the effect of playing more as much. Especially when we've got Santi and Lukas Podolski who had to cope with it last season. I think the best way to cope with any tiredness is to win games convincingly, meaning you can take players off, because there are very few teams in this league that you can realistically think about resting your your best players against."

Yea, with Podolski back, Arsene can play Cazorla or Rosicky in the middle and Podolski on the left to give Ozil a break

Yep. It's also possible with Cazorla Rosicky Walcott though I'd prefer Caz playing the passes, even if he's in poor form, Rosicky's passing is pretty wayward.

Also, Mourinho is very complimentary of Arsenal's approach of grooming youth and buying the odd quality player in his interview, and says he cannot completely stop Ozil:

'It was Mourinho who signed Ozil for Real - from Werder Bremen after impressing at the 2010 World Cup - and the Chelsea boss suggested the Germany forward has no faults in his game.

Mourinho said: "I know his strong points. Not the weaknesses.

"I think I know how to try to stop him to be in the game (for) 90 minutes, with 90 minutes of direct influence.

"But it's impossible to stop him for 90 minutes, because these kind of players they will have always a moment or a couple of moments where you cannot stop them and they end up showing why they are so good.

"To stop him completely, I don't believe we can."'

Yep, probably physical harassment from the likes of Ramires I'd guess. Test out if he can cope with assault. To be fair to him though he did grow up playing pretty rough football.

No City feels shit. Ozil, Hazard or Rooney have to go in order to Get Silva (or even Yaya) and it will be for a hit. Another GW without Silva, Yaya, Negredo, Nasri etc.
    Go Pool!!

    RMT:
    Howard - Gazzaniga
    Debuchy - Distin - B. Turner - Mertesacker - Baker
    Özil - Silva - Hazard - Ramsey - Barkley
    Suárez - Rooney - Negredo
    ITB: £0.0

Any likely changes to make over the next two or three weeks? I'm tempted by Kompany, but this would involve reshaping my midfield. I've thought about Özil to Ramsey, but think that would be a sideways move and that Özil should score more over coming weeks anyway (he's still the leading assist maker in all leagues in Europe over the past five years). I'm also debating the merits of a strong midfield vs a strong defence. Team selling price is currently £106.8m.

Yea I've had Coleman from the start but doesn't seem like a special thing on this site as loads of people have had him from the start but If Lukaku finds form again I would do Negredo -> Luk but that my opinion

I fancy Negredo over Lukaku, especially since the former is something of a differential and should also add some good team value before the wildcard.

That's the team I want! I have most of them players currently.

I have Lukaku, want Negredo. Have Nasri, want Ozil.

Sold Mert for a hit this week, huge mistake, should have sold Zab. Need to ship Mignolet.

I have Coleman, you have Distin.

        *The temporary loss of sanity

The main thing is that his goal threat has suffered yeah, become a bit of an assist machine though. I hope Hull is a real tricky game so he spends most of the game masterfully dictating the tempo on the edge of the final third.

    So I'm thinking...

    Ivanovic, Brady, Ozil

    to

    Ward, Silva, Walcott

I don't like losing Ozil but I have to think that the second combo will score more than the first. The problem is, I have to hit the button tonight in order to be able to afford it.
