An epic Wildcard guide proved amongst the week’s most popular posts as the community considered the drop or draft dilemmas. In this week’s round-up, we also revisit discussions on the pros and cons of the more complex Fantasy games, the potential trends which could emerge in the second half of the season, while moderator and Hall of Famer, Evs, offered his shortlist of “essentials”. As always, we also find time to discover who is rising and falling throughout our community’s leagues.

The Hottest Topics

It started with the words “Long Post Alert!!” but not one of the 1,400 words of Deadeye367’s Wildcard guide were wasted. This popular post covered some of the major factors to be considered when Wildcarding, such as rotating goalkeepers and creating a strong spine of heavyweights throughout your squad. Essential stuff.

Another Wildcard issue being considered this week was whether Fantasy managers are being too hasty in ditching their quality players. Everton’s stuttering striker, Romelu Lukaku, is certainaly among those being considered for the chop. HeyDudes13’s discussion on just what to do with Lukaku provided a chance for his naysayers to emerge with Beavis, Nomar, Lazarus and Little Z among those ready to ditch.

Manchester United’s teenage sensation Adnan Januzaj is another potentially earmarked for the scrap heap, although it appears he still has a sizeable fanbase among the community. Rotation fears, stronger budget options and a Gameweek 28 blank for both Manchester United and City were key factors raised in our Januzaj discussion.

If that pair look under threat, it’s pretty clear that the twin firepower of Daniel Sturridge and Sergio Aguero are high on the most wanted list. Can the Liverpool and City pair rekindle their tri-force with Suarez in Fantasy Football’s own SAS combo? Their goalscoring heroics in yesterday’s games certainly strengthened their case and prompted further investment. Earlier this week, RonH and Hot Sauce were among those talking up the “SAS”, although Hyndman was more doubtful, speaking out on the merits of saving cash for midfield investment.

As we moved into the second half of the season, Dufflinks was on hand to look at some trends that are likely to emerge as the Gameweeks roll by. A host of scenarios were considered, including whether the so-called “big” teams would tighten up at the back and if a relegation scrap would promote the use of the target man and long-ball.

While that discussion may have you considering some Wildcard differentials, Evs was on hand to give you his view on those players who have established “essential” status. We’re not sure what qualifies the guy to be so bold – except perhaps the fact that he’s currently on target for a fourth top-2k finish in five seasons having ranked fifth overall last term. Yeah – best listen up.

Finally, at the other end of the Fantasy Premier League rank spectrum, Mark asked the community for their views on the complexity of Fantasy games and whether you’re put off by those that involve captain and starting XI changes during a Gameweek. Marr revealed he is a big fan of such complex games, most notably the Sky Sports effort. While MJ6987 was amongst those who felt that the added layer of involvement is too much of a commitment.

The Community Tournaments

Teltzham leads the charge in HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First 2Million + Club, a tournament for teams of an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks,

Teltzham currently holds a rank of 35,118 going into Gameweek 22. Five teams were in the top 100,000 at the Gameweek 21 stage.

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing league lost a further 24 managers at the end of Gameweek 21, leaving 247 to fight on. To enter any of TM’s leagues click here.

Those topping the “Long and Winding Road” (LAWR) leagues after Gameweek 21 were Evs, Christina, Minty, Giggs Boson, Demented Flamingo, Champ and Athletico Timbo. The 127-strong main LAWR league leader is Beric.

Our moderators Evs and Athletico Timbo were also pre-Gameweek 22 league leaders in In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues. Others topping his leagues were Bootsy, Crouch Potato, Jambo17 and Koneheads.

Evs also continued to lead the Old Farts Club league, the 27 -trong league featuring the community’s elder-statesmen and women. Meanwhile, Athletico Timbo snatched the lead from DonTheSpecialOne in the Fantasy Football Scout veterans competition the Puffinboy Memorial Cup, named after one of this site’s first posters.

In the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games, some chap called Jonty sits on top in the Fantasy Premier League part of the competition, while Gigging Order continues to top the Sky Sports game but has lost his Metro league lead to FFS mod, In Like Flynn.

Meanwhile in the FFS Moderators and Contributors league standings, Evs and Athletico Timbo shared top spot ahead of Gameweek 22, having made the same number of transfers. New recruit to the editorial team Swanny14 joins the league in pole position for the wooden spoon. His fellow new editorial recruit 7ShadesofSmoke faired much better and was a new entry at number four after Gameweek 21. Any claims that Mark recruited both to keep him off the bottom are vehemently refuted.

By mistake posted this on previous article. Let me know your suggestions in the below move?

Everyone is trying to hop in Ade-Wagon, but am trying to get out! strange?

    I need Aguero and Sturridge.
So Ade, Lukz and Ozil out for Ki Sung, Aguero and Sturridge. (4pt hit)
    is it a crazy move?

Ade a good in-form differential who is the focal attack point in an in-form team that plays attacking football.

      Can't go wrong with that.

Some Cabaye owners were inquiring on here earlier about what happens if/when he goes to PSG so here's what FPL has to say on the matter You can leave the player in your squad, where he will continue to earn 0 points. To remove him permanently, you must use a transfer.

      Hey NTFM!
not bad 64(-4) gutted I let go of Cazorla in the last minute.
Just did Caz, Lukaku & Berba > Ki, Aguero & Sturr.
It's Lukaku+18pts vs 20pts (-4). One week punt for Caz is a bad idea for me.

    a) Silva Bony
    b) AJ Sturridge

With A I can get a flexible choice between Silva or Cazorla to be dropped to get Baines.
With B I'm stuck with Cazorla only

In an attempt to talk myself into Giroud > Welbeck for a week or two:

Since Welbeck has been starting due to RVP and Rooney injuries (GW16) he's scored 6 goals, an assist has 13 BAPs (3 Baps x 4) and an average of 7.28 ppg.

Even when Rooney returns Welbeck will play advanced with Rooney in the Centre Forward position and is nailed on for 60+ minutes each week, sometimes with rotation from Hernandez but generally no competition. Also ... still no sign of RVP return.

I might just get him, and will captain him this week ... Suarez can snag a cheeky 2 points and we'll be off like Buzz Lightyear!

I agree as much as I hate to do so. Welbeck is a solid choice for the past few weeks. Ship has sailed though for the non-owners since RVP and Rooney is due back soon.

Did RVP and Rooney feature on the bench last time around?

I still remember the people here laugh at the 'casuals' who will get Welbeck after his 2 goals against Villa. Saying it's a bad choice and he won't play anymore

Cardiff, Stoke & Fulham in the next three for Utd.

No one believes RVP will be back forfor Cardiff.

I can't see Moyes giving him more than 20/30 min against Shawcross for his first potential game back.

So that leaves us with a probable start in three weeks time against Fulham... Just in time to gear up for the CL.

That 6 week story was nonsense. Watch him surprise everyone with Rooney and RVP back for Cardiff 😉

How soon we forget that RVP was know as Mr. Glass until a cpl seasons ago.

I don't think Moyes will be so foolhearty to rush him back again.

Especially now they're fighting for that covetedcoveted 5th place Europa League spot. 😉

he was fine under Ferguson because he accepted this as an issue and let RVP do training in the gym and in the pool rather than on-field. Moyes came in and had everyone do the same training regimen no matter what (dinosaur methodology) but has embraced this standard now and RVP should be fine the rest of the season.

              fingers crossed.

Mannone & Boruc don't rotate well. Either Boruc all the way or someone to rotate with Mannone.

You know my opinion on Olsson. Not sure Pozuelo is nailed on for how many GWs more. I think Moone is a better pick for that last midfiled spot. The rest is good.

I realize it'd be dumb to double up on sun defense. So Mannone to Marshall and Pozuelo to Noone sounds good to me. Not sure if I'm willing to take a chance on Adebayor or E'to or play it safe with Sturridge (whose fixtures aren't great but he can score against anyone).

Actually do they not rotate well? Boruc has tricky fixtures gameweeks 23, 28, 31, 33 in the immediate future. Mannone would have these fixtures for those 4 games: STK, WBA, nor, tot. Obviously gameweek 33 isn't exciting but I would argue that the extra 0.4 spent over a non playing GK could possibly make up sufficient points during these fixtures to be worth the outlay

Yep, they play the same Home & Away fix almost all the time. It'd be tricky to guess which one to play. However if you think you're well covered for those 4 GWs with them then be my guest. I'd rather have the Mannone + McGregor rotating combo or Boruc + Davis for my WC.

There's no denying Studge's ability. Pick him if you don't mind doubling up Liv attack.

Boruc does not rotate good with Mannone.

Ward way better player than Gabbidon/More goal threat/Cheaper, Don't like Cahill/Kolarov (better Terry or a MUN def like Evans 5.0 with nice fixts and a considerable goal threat ability)

Moyes biggest mistake was replacing all the background staff. Agreed the squad looks fairly average, but obviously capable of decent things. Not just SAF got the best out of them but the management team.

I see folk like Steve Round siting there, check his wiki and think, no wonder there's disharmony in the squad.

SOT & SUN are a piss poor rotation.

SUN are the worst / second worst defensive side the the league. I would never start them over SOT...

Just get K. Davis & save yourself .5mil to use elsewhere like...

Whittaker who isn't nailed on & B. Turner may not be either.

In the end, I do like Noone as your 5th. Thinks he's a good shout at 4.3 sir.

Everytime Santi Cazorla has scored or assisted in a game this season, Arsenal have won by two goals
After each week where Yaya Toure has scored over double digit points, he has blanked the following week
Per Mertesacker has assembled more BPS this season than every man on the overall dream team except Yaya Toure and Luis Suarez
