Our last glance at the Gameweek gone by assesses Sunderland’s flying winger and turns our attentions to north London, where Tottenham’s attack and Arsenal’s lack of offensive consistency are threatening to shape our Fantasy plans:

The Player

Having racked up a 22-point haul in the previous Gameweek as Sunderland swept aside fellow strugglers Fulham, Adam Johnson was a man in form ahead of the Wearsiders home clash against Southampton. Midway through the first-half, the Black Cats looked dead and buried after their visitors swept into an early two-goal advantage but the former Man City wide man once again came to the rescue to underline the fact that, if his side are to beat the drop, he’s going to have a significant say in the matter.

As Fantasy managers know, there’s a fine line between chasing last week’s points and snapping up a player in form but, in Johnson’s case, it’s becoming increasingly obvious the latter applies. Currently sitting at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – 0.5 less than his starting price – the wide man’s goal, assist and maximum bonus in Saturday lunchtime’s stalemate took his tally to 35 points in just two appearances.

What seems remarkable is that Johnson had started only one of the previous eight Gameweeks under Gus Poyet – and also found the net on that occasion, too. For whatever reason, he seemed to have drifted onto the periphery but is now firmly established as a key figure on the right of the Black Cats’ front three, with his manager lavishing praise on his recent performances.

Whilst his next four away trips (new, mcy, ars, liv) are a little unappealing, Johnson’s remaining home games more than balance the weight in his favour. With Stoke, Hull, West Brom, Palace, West Ham, Cardiff and Swansea constituting seven of the final eight visitors to the Stadium of Light, Poyet could barely wish for a kinder run of games. Bearing in mind Sunderland have already got the better of City, Chelsea and United in front of their own fans, it seems a near-certainty that Saturday’s exploits won’t be the last time Johnson will be making the Fantasy headlines before the season is out.

The Team

A 3-1 win at Swansea took Tottenham’s record to five wins and a draw under Tim Sherwood as the north London club continue to impress as an attacking force. Both Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen have been paramount to their turnaround in fortunes and, as winter wildcards continue to be wielded, have deservedly earned plenty of interest on the back of a string of consistent performances.

Sherwood’s decision to switch from 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1, with Eriksen tucked in behind the Togo international, didn’t deter the in-form duo last Sunday. Adebayor’s 13-point haul at the Liberty took his tally to 49 points in six (8.2 points per game) since the departure of Andre Villas-Boas and makes a mockery of the Portuguese’s decision to hand him a single sub appearance in the first 16 Gameweeks. Eriksen has earned 42 points (7 ppg) over the same period as Sherwood’s offensive approach allows him to operate with a freedom never afforded under the previous manager.

At 7.8 and 7.3 respectively, it’s hard to overlook such value for money, with the pair also offering a real consistency – Adebayor has returns in five of six, whilst Eriksen has produced the goods four times over the same period. Furthermore, Spurs have now scored 14 times in those six matches under Sherwood – previously, they had produced a paltry 15 in 15 for Villas-Boas.

The signs seem encouraging, then, though the upcoming schedule is perhaps enough to persuade many to either look elsewhere or at least limit their level of immediate investment. Home clashes against City and Everton, with a trip to Hull sandwiched in between, offer Sherwood’s side a stiff test over the short-term as that familiar Fantasy quandary of form against fixtures prepares to collide.

The Talking Point

Whilst the majority of top-flight sides can rely on one or two talents to produce the goods on a near-regular basis, Arsenal, on the other hand, are becoming a real source of Fantasy frustration as the season unfolds. The league leaders have notched 20 fewer goals than City, for example, and whilst the rest of the top four boast consistent performers such as Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure, Eden Hazard, Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard, the Gunners have shared the points around in recent weeks.

The loss of both Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey has left us hoping Mesut Ozil and/or Olivier Giroud can step up. Neither has delivered with any regularity, though – the German has mustered a single assist in five, whilst Giroud, despite being nailed-on as the lone striker, has netted in just three of his last 16 league appearances.

Luckily for the Gunners, others have improved of late. Jack Wilshere has produced attacking returns in each of his last three now, whilst Santi Cazorla’s 16-point haul against Fulham also highlighted the fact that Arsene Wenger’s side are not solely reliant on one or two individuals to make the difference – indeed, the Arsenal manager has acknowledged this last weekend, going on to say:

“It’s the best thing that can happen to us, because if you depend on one player you think you have to put him in cotton wool to keep him fit. For us to know everyone can score and that someone like Ramsey, who is a goalscorer, is not playing at the moment, and Arteta, who can get us a goal as well but is not playing, that is very positive.”

Ozil’s decline has led to significant sales over the last few days. At 10.1 in FPL, the German’s value has been questioned by many, with his departure from Fantasy squads freeing up the cash to splash on fit-again Sergio Aguero. With Walcott out of the picture until next season, Ramsey’s imminent return is bound to see him return to our squads, though a possible role on the right in Walcott’s absence may well dent the Welshman’s appeal for the run-in. Given that Per Mertesacker, with 106 points, is one behind Giroud and only four off Ozil’s 110, some are eyeing up the prospect of investing in the Gunners backline alone, with their increasingly resilient displays making the Arsenal defence far more effective Fantasy options right now.

I don't know from where the rumours about PSG bidding for Hazard have come from. Why would we sell our best player and I am sure PSG is aware of that.

Not sure, I went for Yaya over Silva. Wouldn't say it's bad if you think Yaya will outscore Silva and you don't have other problems/transfers you need to take care of first.

Looks exactly like my team except I have Ozil instead of Silva and Gnabry instead of Januzaj. I'd save a FT if I were you but if you already have 2 FTs saved up then why not... YYT is rarely injured and as a previous Silva owner I hated his picking up niggles here and there.

    Boruc/Mannone
    Kosc Cahil Disitn Kolarov Gabb
    Wilshere Navas Haz Lall Noone
    SAS

Any thoughts on this team. I know I end up with second- third choice of Chelsea def and City's Midfield but Cahil and Navas are doing well lately and when fit.

Do people think Mata is better than Kagawa because Kagawa's 24 goals and 16 assists in just 57 games came in the Bundesliga whereas Mata is proven in the Prem?

Kagawa was Bundesliga player of the year, refuse to believe the talent isn't there. Mata has looked just as ineffectual on the left wing for chelsea as Kagawa has for United

I say he's never been given a run of games in which to do so

in the wrong position too. mata is so similar to kagawa. both small nimble players with little power/presence meaning they need to be number 10. If Moyes puts Mata on the left wing too it is going to be such a waste

Thing is the #10 of yesteryear doesn't exist anymore, especially with teams playing two holding midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 there just isn't any space in the middle. That's why generally players who can make an effect on the game have been shunted out wide with a license to cut in.

Yep. Mata only brings more PL reputation and a much higher price tag on the table. Which could make the difference, but doesn't mean he'd be doing good on the wing.

Would like to get Aguero in today before I miss yet another rise, gonna have to take a hit to fund it. Front line is:-

    Silva Oscar Gerrard Ozil Januzaj
    Suarez Giroud J Rod

    A) Giroud > Aguero, Ozil > Cabaye/Erikson/AJ
    B) J Rod > Aguero, Ozil > Noone

Best one week punt this week (from the below)?

    a) ETO'O- not convinced he'll repeat his Man U performance. WHM properly going to park the bus. Have Haz

    b) BONY - Fulham at home, BUT Swans in awful form + injury crisis (who's going to pass him the ball? No Shelvey, no Hernandez, no Michu etc). Would mean you could keep past this week tho.

    c) BENTEKE - ok home fixture + a derby...but Mel likely to make them tight? No real form still

    d) A. JOHNSON - would mean losing one of Eriksen, Silva or Lallana for a week, would lose value on all except Silva. Stoke likely to try and shut him down away from home.

    e) CABAYE - same as above. nor are awful tho.

    f) JANUAZ - surely returns are coming? Means i could finally get rid of Ravel!

I think Ole has played him since he came in, Townsend even when fit was rotated. Anyway the point is Noone/Townsend are your 4th - 5th Mids but you can improve your defence by picking Noone

Chambers could be a risk. Unsure whether it's his spot to lose or Clyne will come back into contention. No one other than me considering Dan Burn? he was quite impressive against the gooners I thought.

I don't like saying this but Utd need to model the formation/system on City.

City play with 4 central midfielders essentially and then width is provided by Zabaleta and Kolarov.

Enforcer with tireless work rate and break up play - Fernandinho & Carrick

Box to Box - Yaya & Utd to sign Gundogan or Vidal

Creative Geniuses - Silva and Nasri & Utd to Mata and Reus

Even though it's basically a panic buy, it would solve a long term problem. It means Utd can lose Rooney and still have someone very good to play in the number 10 role. Kagawa hasn't done well enough when played there and Januzaj is still too young to be a week in week out option.

Mata also played on the left a lot for Valencia, so he has experience on the wing and could play there if needed.

The concern is that with Utd being so stubborn over Rooney, it hardly seems likely that Chelsea will let Mata go in reverse.

I was all set to do it, but with Coleman out how do we think Everton's defence will be?
Everton haven't conceded more than 1 goal in their last 10 games.

I know but it's always a worry captaining a midfielder vs most people with Suarez.
Are you not too keen on your chances Doosra?

This is much more promising for Mannone than the other Argentine keeper they were reported to be chasing. This one sounds more like backup than a new first choice.

Should I WC or wait till next week:

Hazard to PSG could be one of those last minute "Huh? What? Never saw that coming!" transfers that so often accompany the January window.

He's always expressed a wish to go back to France (which is also closer to his family in Belgium).

And I can see JM just shrugging his shoulders and letting him go because he knows that Mata is waiting in the wings and JM thinks he's cool as feck by being 'that' manager.

I never said Mata was a direct replacement. Mata is a super talent but under-utilised this season.

His re-introduction could reshape the team.

It would be the stupidest decision ever, Hazard is indispensable in Chelsea and has evolved a lot tactically and defensive process, is a much more complete player this season and is having his best season in England, the time of claim, he will not leave London, the JM will not allow.

Well i agree i just think that Moyes will not change the formation and so Mata isnt the best signing we could make. I would take him in a heart beat if we played a 4-3-3 or something.

That would be a good deal for us. Then again, if he's not going to play (it looks less likely for each match), why not cash in? He can be as brilliant a footballer as he wants, if he's on the bench that's not helping anybody. He really doesn't fit into Mourinho's philosophy and it doesn't seem like he's loving being bench fodder.

Again, emphasis on "for us." I dunno how he'd fit into Moyes philosophy when Rooney and RVP are fit... Mata's many things, but he's not a winger.

Lets hope so. Couldn't believe how excited I got at our summer prospects. What's worrying is that Moyes doesn't seem to have any less well known targets lined up. We need a few big (obvious) players, but there must be some up and comers Utd can gamble on.
