In our latest article for Members, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the current form of a number of selected strikers. Last month’s article, focussing on midfielders, proved more than worthwhile – 10 of the highlighted 14 players who had shown improvement for frequency of goal attempts inside the box have all found the net in the four Gameweeks thereafter:

With that in mind, we’re hoping for more of the same success as we assess forwards’ form over the last six Gameweeks compared to the first 18 fixtures of the Fantasy season. In addition to pointing out improvements, we also cast an eye over some popular Fantasy assets who have clearly dropped off the pace in recent matches. For those members unfamiliar with the KPI stats, as previously explained they focus on the frequency of key stats or events in order to track player form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

You have to get invited to be a mod if you show you would be a worthwhile mod i'm sure it could happen! Money goes towards servers & paying for OPTA stats etc. There is no real profit being made from the running of the site.

Yeh the work that has gone into this place is unreal! I use the stats but the main reason to sign up is to support the site. If you really want to be a mod then you will really need to become an important member or the community and be able to offer something to the running of the site. If you are a coding genius you are probably in with a better chance! Or if you know someone in Opta who can get you the stats for free!!

I think he'll hit double figures in 3-4 more matches. He'll donkey some too.

But coming up he's got what like 10 goals in the last 3 matches vs. Norwich, he's got a DGW at some point, upcoming Swansea match looks tasty, Cardiff... Sturridge is straight solid at grabbing 6-9+points a match but doesn't seem to offer the explosive hauls Suarez can hit, 13-20+ range.

Thought I'd repost this from the earlier discussion about Gambler's Fallacy, for anyone else struggling with why Sturridge is NOT 'due a blank'. I'm not ranting or mocking here, I understand that it can be a bit tricky to wrap your head around. This here is a good way to look at it.

Let's say that the probability of Sturridge scoring a goal in a game is 0.4. The probability of him scoring in seven consecutive games is therefore:

    0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 = 0.0016384

But once he's scored the first goal, the probability of that first goal is no longer 0.4 - it's 1, because it's now a fact instead of an uncertain event. So now the probability of the whole sequence has become:

    1.0 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 = 0.004096 (slightly better than before)

Then the second one goes in and that one changes from 0.4 to 1.0

    1.0 x 1.0 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 = 0.01024 (slightly better than before)

    .
    .

Each time a goal goes in, the probability of the whole sequence gets better because more of them have become facts and fewer of them are now uncertain. By the time you get to the last one, it's:

    1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 x 0.4 = 0.4

Hope this helps. It helped me 🙂 (Keep your teal deers to yourselves please)

0.4 was an arbitrary number to illustrate an underlying principle, or a way of looking at things to help you avoid falling into Gambler's Fallacy.

He isn't saying that Sturridge is 40% to score every single game he is simply saying that past performance does not effect his goal expectancy next week.

            I think most people do.

But a few people struggle with it though, because one (incorrect) way of looking at it is to think that the probability of the seventh goal is the same as the probability of seven goals. Once you've started looking at it that way, it can be hard to stop. I think this way of looking at it helps.

This is just blatantly not true though... Say he scores in GW1,2,3 and we had initially estimated that his chance of scoring in any GW is 0.4, under our model the probability of these events is 0.064 (i.e. pretty small) so it looks like the initial estimate is wrong, and we in fact do change his goal expectancy to some number above 0.4.

If past performance didn't affect goal expectancy then bookies wouldn't shorten the odds of an in-form player scoring, but obviously they do.

Very true but that's a different thing. This post is about why scoring in six consecutive games doesn't make him more likely to blank the next week (i.e. 'due a blank' because no-one has ever scored in 10 consecutive games).

It is true that games are not independent events and a player's psychology will be affected by scoring which in turn affects the way he plays next week. But that's different to 'due' because of the probability of sequences.

The model and his past performance and two separate things Sturridges past performance does not effect his past performance in reality only how often the model predicts he is going to score in the future.

I worked for a well known bookmakers for years they couldn't care less what the actual odds are just the liability in each market when a player is form more people tend to back them and that is the reason for the price drop not that the actual chances of them scoring have improved.

Of course, but that doesn't change the central insight into why the odds of a blank don't get better as he keeps scoring.

The main thing is about uncertain events turning into facts as the sequence progresses.

Actually this could be refined a little. The probability of him scoring (at 40%) is an estimate before the fact. Once he scores in more games, we would need to increase this to reflect a little more data.

You can never have enough data to make it an exact number a players real scoring rate is going to fluctuate throughout their career and the exact number per match is going to depend on so many factors most of which you won't know until after the match! The figure really isn't the important part of the post though.

Yep. It is true that games are not independent events and a player's psychology will be affected by scoring which in turn affects the way he plays next week, and therefore affects the probability of a goal.

But that's very different to the concept of 'due' that people think of when they look at the probability of sequences. Some people think of the probability of the seventh goal being the same as the probability of seven goals, which is not true and my post is about why that isn't true.

Yes indeed, if the concept of form is correct then a player scoring in the previous game makes him more rather than less likely to score in the current game.

"In finance, a contrarian is one who attempts to profit by investing in a manner that differs from the conventional wisdom, when the consensus opinion appears to be wrong."

Well, with so many great players drawing a blank in GW29, could it be best to stop scrambling now to field a weaker XI, write off the week altogether & start buying up future DGW players now in an attempt to field the most DGWers we can down the road?

I don't think you want to weaken your GW29 team further by getting DGW-ers in now, but spending transfers on players you don't really want just because they have a game that week doesn't sound great either.

The middle path is: save a transfer for the DGWs instead of spending it on a poor quality GW29 player.

    Dzeko -> Adebayor

will leave me with these 10:

    Boruc
    Mertesacker / Ivanovic / M Olsson / Bruce (Gabbidon)
Hazard Lallana (Silva / Mata/ Pozuelo)
    Sturridge Suarez Adbayor

would you ship 1 of my mids to field 11 for -4? And if so which 1? Nobody looks appealing to me!

    In my opinion
it is the way you look at it

if i were to say what is the chance of xyz scoring 15 matches id say it is very less
here we are thinking about 15 matches as a set

if we were asked if xyz will score in the next match his chances are pretty good

the problem is that we are taking into account that the possibility of a future event doesnt delend on past event

but id like to point out one fact which is true in my case i dont know true maybe in case of others also

when we play a game like flappy bird or any game which is about high scores
the moment i am about to reach our high score i get a good feeling and after that i am not able to beat my highscore by a big margin it is a small margin or maximum a medium margin

so i think we cannot rule out past events in this case
