Due to domestic cup duties over the next two weekends, just 10 of the Premier League’s 20 teams have a fixture in both Gameweek 28 and 29. With City and Sunderland out of league action until mid-March, owners of Yaya Toure, David Silva and Adam Johnson are pondering their midfield options and mulling over some short-term transfers in order to plug the gaps.

In our second members article of the week, we dig deep into the data of those 10 teams and analyse the midfielders who have offered the greatest goal threat over the last six Gameweeks.

Looking at options who have registered eight or more efforts on goal over the featured period, Chelsea supply us with five players, Norwich chip in with four, whilst Southampton and Palace both have a couple of midfielders in the assessment:

My plan: use my 2 FT's this gw to get Ivan and Ince. That gives me a comfortable 11 + a 1 bench player for gw 28, and 10 playing for gw 29. Then I get Toure + Company in for freebies for gw30, Aguero in for gw 31 (depending upon fitness). Keeping Suarez/Studge, that gives me Kompany, Aguero, Toure, Studge, Suarez and Mata for the dgw 31.

Sound ok or is there a flaw in my master plan?

yes, but why not use that transfer on somebody who DOES have a game in 29, and/or a better matchup than at everton in 28. Wait on Nolen until after his blank.

" Casuals " only chase points , they don't plan and they don't scroll ahead in the fixtures section,
All the casual sees is Scez ...Czech then Terry ... Coleman then Hazzard ...Yaya then Suarez ....sturridge , it seems a simple formula doesn't it !

@ RoysC / Turd burgler (and others that contributed) that was one of the best posts/threads I've seen since I started posting on here , I'm a united fan for 41 years and I actually remember Atkinson / Docherty era and Fergies (unsuccessful) early days .
I'm gutted at this stage and I have my own views similar to many posted in that thread , putting all the smart comments / banter to one side it's a shame and I continue my life long support to Manchester United and I hope and pray that the good times are around the corner.

Im curious about any similarities between fergies early days and that of moyes. Does he deserve time like Fergie had to rebud an age inc squad with new 'Moyes' players. Just like Fergies young guns at the time eg Becks, Giggs, Nevilles, Scholes, Kean etc

Yes he does deserve time..but not because he's Moyes and not because it's United...All managers deserve more time, but the pressure of success means they can't have it now...sadly...well not four years worth for sure.

Fergie will obviously have a big say in it all and he will surely compare his early days as the united manager with that of Moyes. I just wonder if Fergie will want to give as much leeway and time that he himself had in his early days as manager

They can't though Ryan..like it or not (and I don't) United are a valuable company who can't afford a lack of success...They can't wait for years for managers to fail for years before things get better...Those days have gone, sadly..

That is a shame. It seems United have gotten it wrong then by signing Moyes on a long term contract. I would have thought it was not so much a statement of faith in his ability as a manager but rather a statement of certain patience. I'm certainly none the wiser as to what the United board will do if we limp to a 7th place finish.

I think that the board misread the stuation..They went for a kind of like for like replacement on SAF's recommendation(ish)..hoping for a seamless transition..They may well have been better to have gone for a total new direction of their own, time will tell. Either way the owners will no doubt be counting the cost soon in terms of share value...very, very tricky customers these shareholders...and money talks.

Fergie didn't have Becks, Giggs, Nev etc. until 1992 onwards. At the time of his appointment he inherited a squad of piss heads that Atkinson failed to control.
McGrath, Whiteside and Bryan Robson were all on the gargle most nights and SAF came in and dealt with them with an iron fist. He only kept Robbo on, which proved to be an inspired choice, even though Mc Grath went onto great things. White sides career ended early.
He made some canny early signings like McClair and slowly progressed over a few seasons.
Was on the verge of getting sacked but United had a big win over Forest in the cup and he was saved. The FA cup was huge back then, so the silly red tops in the UK gave him a stay of execution and he went on to win the cup, the rest was history.
United board gave him 5 years grace, iirc, would definitely not happen these days.

Have a read of Paul McGraths biog, very good read.

Cheers for the insight. It was well before my time so I have a limited understanding of anything prior to the late 90's. It's interesting that the managerial mindset has changed a lot and how we expect results straight away for any new manager. I guess times have changed and with the expectation of European football on a regular basis anything short of that might lead to an easy sacking for any manager at a top club.

So how come Liverpool showed so much confidence in Rodgers? He's clearly a good manager but what if they are unlucky enough to finish 5th this season. Or why was he not sacked last year after failing to get CL football. I think it was brilliant patience by the Liverpool board and it's clearly proving dividends

Liverpool's situation appointing Rodgers is different to United appointing Moyes.
Moyes is being asked to continue current success, while Rodgers was tasked with improving a side that finished 8th the previous season, and had been out of the CL for going on 3 years.

Rodgers' improvement last year in finishing 7th wasn't so much about the league placing as showing improved team cohesion and that the club was going in the right direction - top 4 wasn't an instant requirement.
At the start of this season top 4 wasn't a necessary requirement for Rodgers to avoid the sack either, the owners knew it would be competitive, but they certainly expected Rodgers to compete well for the top 4, and not coast along in 6th/7th with no chance of CL.

The decision to back Rodgers has paid dividends this season though, as he has improved the team dramatically, far more than anyone was expecting, and improved performance levels of players throughout the team - Henderson, Suarez, Flanagan, Sterling to name a few who have shown huge improvement since Rodgers arrived.

In terms of what to suggest for United, I don't know. Even when results were poor for Liverpool last season it at least looked like Liverpool had a cohesive plan of how they wanted to play, and where they were going, which has finally come good. Does Moyes have that?
Nevertheless, I think he deserves another season, and judge him next Christmas perhaps.

Fair point well made. Moyes is starting with a champion team whereas Rodgers had to rebuild a team. I'm sure the united board know that we are I. Desperate need to rebuild as well. Hopefully Moyes will be able to make it clear as to the direction he intends to bring to the club. So far though he does appear clueless and out of his depth 🙁

If I'm being honest I'm torn on this very valid argument.
Back in the day it was the norm to give managers a few seasons eg Fergie and boy was he close to being sacked in those ' bleak ' early days - he wouldn't get that time today IMO.
The problem is I'm not quite sure if Moyes is up to the job , the drinking culture of the 70s/80s/ 90s even has gone but like life other problems have arised , the internet / social media / drugs / gambling and big heads are even bigger and dressing rooms for average paid managers of today's stars must be difficult today , it's a results based game more than ever and fans / media are fickle and for once I'm gonna sit on the fence and see what happens with Moyes.
I suppose in reality he has a 6 yr deal and he deserves 2 seasons to prove himself but the question is - will Davis Moyes be given the time and is he the man to lead Manchester United forward ?

I'd say the length of his contract is a major clue as to what the board is thinking. Perhaps they always anticipated a drop in share value and have resolved to invest in the long term at the expense of the short term. Hopefully Moyes is up to the task

He should definitely be given all of next season as well. There's no point trotting out the line that we don't want to hire and fire like other clubs then add the caveat "unless it's going badly."

He is struggling certainly but in any job it is difficult to come in as a new manager and inherit someone else's team (not just referring to sports). If he has a vision let him build to that vision then we can decide if it works or not.

Sounds like a logical response but who knows how the masses will react.

Suarez is being sold now, with a blank I can see plenty getting rid but I'll wait and see after the weekend.

Fancy doing something ridiculously punty like Suarez to Mitroglou for GW29 but I won't bother if it's going to hurt my chances of getting Aguero alongside Suarez and Sturridge for GW30 onwards.

I would doubt it with only 1 blank. Personally I have too much value in them to give them up (have Suarez at 10.9, Studge at 9.5) and would lose millions for just 1 game out and then a transfer back in. I'm keeping both!!!!

Missing one defender that rarely scores above 6 isn't going to kill your team. Their next CL game isn't until midweek after the GW30 fixtures so don't see why he'd be rested now.

I'll most likely be bringing him in next week anyway and could well possibly take a hit for someone else if that makes a difference? Maybe this way at least I'll get an extra player and won't need to do the bit next week

No he's not, he's a gamble. Given the fact that Pell has already rushed him back once, and paid the price, and that City now have one more forward than early season, do you think Pell will play him twice in one week ?..I'm not convinced he will..I'm getting him in but I'm prepared to be let down.

That's interesting, considering city have really struggled without him and the title is on the line, would u not assume he will start both games and be subbed off early as per usual? I'm not sure he can afford to start him on the bench once fit.

Dunno Ryan..you'd have to be one of the physios at City to know that...The later double gameweeks will be safer bets if they are out of Europe..but for now I'm not convinced he'll be playing as many minutes as we'd like...

I'm actually gambling on a United bounce back 😯 RVP, Mata, Evans owner currently so that's hopefully 3 DGWers in the bag along with SS. Gonna gamble on the likes of Nolan, Sterling, Mirallas, Silva and hope Aguero only gets one start.
I can have 10 in gw29 and 9 DGWers in 31 with no hits if I don't get Aguero ... Hopefully they'll be the right ones.

I can see it being a major headache until after the wildacrd when you settle on your main squad until the end. Ending after the blanks it will be impossible not to fill your team up with DGW players, but then making subs could be very tricky that week as all the DGW teams play on the Sat, so you'd be pretty much stuck with your initial captain unless you went for someone playing Sunday.

it's all nice and slow now so will post again..thoughts on this for GW31?

            Boruc - Mannone
            Ivan - Coleman - Azpi - Collins - Ward
            Yaya - Gerrard - Nolan - AJ - Noone
            Suarez - Kun - Sturridge

I think it looks mighty fine, but I'm obviously biased

It would be insane to captain Adebayor over Studge this weekend right?

Just think that if Hull can put 4 past Cardiff then Spurs could have a field day as well.

I'm (c) Ade tho I ain't got Studge as I went with Negredo (lol) a few weeks ago when Aguero went injured , so I wouldn't follow my advice especially when I advocated staying silva would out score Yaya , Ramsey couldn't keep it up and Lallana was a flash in the plan.

Few questions. Are any Azplicueta owners concerned about Ashley Cole just sitting there on the bench, isn't he due a return? Secondly is Chelsea not assured a rout against Fulham? They do it every year. Hazard the armband? Yes or No?

              Cole's in the doghouse.
Maybe not. Chelsea away under Mourinhou are happy to grind out results and Fulham may be tightening up under Magath.

Imo if sturridge outscore suarez this gw more ppl will sell suarez due to the blank and ppl may do suarez->kun as a direct replacement on gw30. Likely tt he may drop another 0.3. Nt sure how much u will lose on suarez n sturridge but for me i estimate around the same loss for both. Rvp is worth a punt but not rooney imo. If not it is better to stick w suarez and sturridge
