The ScoutCast revolution is here. Not content with having to ensure our voices are up to scratch, Granville and myself decide to risk ridicule and stream our first live Google Hangout version, putting our hairlines and choice of décor on the line.

Having embarked on this brave new world, it also made sense to shake up the content so we welcome back Jonty to fire us a whole host of questions from the community and introduce some special guests along the way. We start this week with none other than the world’s top Fantasy Premier League manager – Luke Weston is in the house to rub shoulders with mediocrity and field our inquisition.

If you missed the live stream, you can catch the full “warts and all†hangout version via the player below or, if you’re a traditionalists, you can help yourself to the regular edited podcast version via this link or stream it via the first player.

PS: Apologies that we focus the camera on Granville and then myself – this is down to human error rather than our huge egos. With our ranks, we’d rather have been off camera.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Gameweek Hits, just had a look at my gameweek history and i have taken hits on 19 times this season with a ratio of 15 green arrows from those weeks and only 4 red arrows when taking no hit.So to me taking hits should not be frowned upon, what success rate have you got as far as hits go?

Overall on 9 weeks i have taken no hit i have had a red arrow.

    Hits are all good.

Whether you got a red or green arrow doesn't really show whether the hit was a success or not. You need to compare what points you would have got with and without the hit.

11 greens to 6 reds when taking hits......add this to the extra tv gained thro making more transfers then hits are fine....aslong the transfer is gd the hit will be paid back

3 green and 5 red for me. It's far too simplistic to say hits are either good or bad.

9 hits for me, and only 3 greens

I do remember checking some weeks that i got my red arrows that the hits did pay off though - they got me more points than the players id transferred out, and so covered themselves and I'd have had a red arrow anyway

6 - 5 in favour of green this year but that's unusual. I've noticed my hits paying off in previous years with higher returns the bigger the hit. Not so with WCs, though, and the same this year with two red arrows :-). You've also got to consider the longer term benefit, particularly when setting up or deconstructing a DGW team

4 greens and 2 reds this season when I have taken hits.

4 of them probably justified (3 greens and 1 red), and 2 not (1 red and 1 green).

I have taken fewer hits than in previous seasons, and have therefore taken fewer bad hits than before.

However, considering the number of successful hits taken by the world number one, I may have to reconsider this strategy. Hits clearly can be good, but they have to be the right ones.

Great to see the faces behind the voices, and the distinguished special guest.

I would like it to show screenshots of Mark's and Granville's teams and of the Scoutcast team when they are discussing them. Perhaps also show the list of fixtures for the game-week when they are discussing potential clean sheets and likely results.

How about making a feature of Granville's cat, like in the intro to Coronation Street or as in Ernst Stavro Blofeld?

  3. A Look Ahead To GW38
    A.
    • 14 Years
    11 years, 8 months ago

I fancied a cheeky look ahead to GW38, so here goes my assessment:

The DGW will be out of the way, United face a tricky trip away to southampton last day of the season and so we could be wanting to shift their assets for a last GW punt to catch our rivals.

The teams with the best attacking fixtures in GW38 to allow for such a punt -
City (WHM), Liverpool (NEW), Spurs (AVL), Chelsea (car), West Brom (STK) and Sunderland (SWA)

Given we will all likely already have 3 City we can ignore those and look to the other teams.

Liverpool: Sturridge looks a prime target, as do Gerrard and Sterling, as we'll know then the state of the title race, it seems likely Liverpool will come into in needing to win their last game, and what better team to face than Newcastle, who have nothing to play for and appear to be terrible. Gerrard always seems to do well vs Newcastle, while Sturridge got a hat trick last season.

Spurs? Well many will have Eriksen, but Adebayor could also be worth a punt against Villa, who should be safe by then.

Chelsea: Cardiff will be fighting for their lives, but equally could be already relegated, while Chelsea could also be in for the title and needing a win. Hazard or a punt on the striker we think will start? Rest before a CL final could come into play here though. Salah can't play CL and could certainly be worth a punt.

West Brom and Sunderland are two teams who are currently in the relegation battle, though it seems likely that the former will be safe by the last day and the latter will be down, this is by no means guaranteed, they could both have something to play for, and if so a punt on their attacking assets could be worth it as they'll need goals.
They both have DGWs in 37 too, so a punt a week earlier on the likes of Amalfitano, Johnson or Borini/Wickham could be an idea depending on the situation before 38.

Matches that are dead rubbers on the final day tend to go one of two ways - goalfest (See West Brom 5-5 Man United last season) or bore draws as both teams don't care about the result much (Southampton 1-1 Stoke last season)

Its hard to predict which way these will go, and this is something to consider come the last day.

    So, the verdict:

Consider bringing in relative big hitters:
Sturridge, Adebayor, Sterling, Eriksen, Salah, Hazard (if no CL final), Adam Johnson, Skrtel

Edgier punts to make up ground:
    Borini, Wickham, Vydra, Kane, Bony

Gw38 is very much a one off every season.
You always get some freak scores and results but guessing where they might come is part of the fun. I think whatever happens between now and 38, and whatever state our teams are in we'll still be looking at the same punts on the final day, just might have different players we're going to sell for them

        That is the problem.

Southampton v United is going to be one of the (basically) dead rubbers.
The plight of 6th place could be riding on it, and so whether United or Spurs get Europa League, but it looks like neither want it.

It could be Lambert cementing his world cup call up with a hat trick vs United, while Rooney responds with a brace of his own and Welbeck gets in on the act.

Or Southampton could already be on holiday, while United pick up 3 points in a 1-0 win to take them 6th, no idea how that will go.
I'll probably lose one of Mata or Rooney for that game though, assuming I own them both by then

What I will do is to prevent those assured starting player in the upcoming world-cup, e.g., Rooney & RVP. They don't want to pick up injury by a meaningless match and so they won't play hard at GW38. However, players like Mata is very playable as he is fighting hard to get into the World-cup squad. Sturridge will be a great purchase by GW38 if and only if Liverpool needs that game for the title.

Apart from preventing to transfer in world cup starter from teams with nothing to play for, I will also suggest to sell the deadwood, coz you need the full bench to prepare for those unimaginable resting regular players.

    The art of taking hits.

In acknowledging the somewhat depressing fact that FPL league leader Luke Weston has taken 76 points worth of hits this season compared to my 0 and is still almost 350 points ahead of me, I have to conclude that the 'no hits' strategy I normally play (I've taken about 4 in 5 years of playing this game) is not the most effective - at least not this season.

I've had some good ranks in the past (top 3k last season, top 6k the season before) and I've always played the strategy of not taking hits unless they are somehow mitigated (e.g. if I only have 9 starting players) preferring to try and avoid them by planning ahead. Of my 4 hits, I can only remember one paying off and I regretted the others.

So I figure that neither 'no hits' or 'lots of hits' are good policies in of themselves but, rather, that there's an 'art' to taking hits. It's one I definitely haven't mastered but some people seem to so I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on how to take hits 'the right way'?

You have to take hits for the right players. That sounds obvious but looking at Luke Weston's history he's probably been taking hits in previous seasons and been nowhere near world no1.

The stars have aligned for him this year and it's all coming off. Normally spending points is too much of a risk for the serious player.

60 points worth of hits here, and 14K. Sometimes they come off, sometimes they don't. The art to them is to use them on players that you would probably keep for a few weeks anyway, taking a hit for a Chelsea defender, Hazard, Suarez, Yaya, Ramsey this season would have been well worth it over keeping any other players in their position. Just looking at what colour arrow I got when I took a hit it is 8-5 in favour of taking a hit (8 Greens)

This season I've tried to limit my hits to something like one every 8 games but there are certain cases that I wouldn't think twice about taking one, like a Suarez v Norwich situation or a Dgw for instance.

I'm tight with hits in general but you have to be able to adapt. For instance last week play Ki or go -4 for Nasri. Yes it worked out taking the -4 and you get the points in the bag as well as having Nasri for West Brom this weekend. DGW also making taking hits much easier as the loss is generally less.

Interestingly the 2nd and 3rd placed guys have taken substantially fewer hits (8 & 5 respectively - though that still seems a lot to me 🙂 ).

That's the only negative side to taking hits, but what are the odds of finishing on the same points!

Having said that, I'd say I've taken more hits than anyone else around my rank so I probably lose a couple of hundred places because of that ðŸ™

If you're bringing in a captain then it's worth a hit. Also if an unexpected player is doing well and his price is going through the roof then it's worth a hit to bring him in at the lowest price possible.

They can pay off, especially for the DGWs.

Also, keep in mind that hits can be looked at over the medium to long term as well. Planning can only get you so far. What if there are 2 or 3 players (that you don't have) flourishing? Taking a hit or two to get them in early can pay off big time.

I always tease my son for watching videos on youtube of some guy playing Minecraft. "why would you watch some nerd playing the game, when you can just play it yourself?"

      Mannone - Adrián
      Coleman - Azpi - Ward - Vlaar - Chester
      Hazard - Silva - Eriksen - Snodgrass - Mutch
      Suarez - Sturridge - Lukaku

      0FT, 4.1m ITB

Obviously lots of problems (Hazard, Snodgrass, Sturridge at a minimum)

Looking at Aguero, Mata, gerrard etc

I think we may all be overplaying the worries over Mata being shifted wide. Yes it may happen and yes his returns weren't great when he was out there. But he has hit form and the confidence is high again after Mourinho rejected him.

I only have room for one of Mata or Ramsey atm, and no way I can afford Mata and RvP

Chester, 6.1, Mata and Rooney is do-able. so possibly Rafa or Kos. With just one of them I can have Kos and Evra. You see my dilemma.

IMO if you don't have Mannone he's probably worth it, if you do, not worth a transfer.

so, I was at my brother's house for dinner on Monday. They had a full roast chicken. My nephew asked why the chicken had it's legs tied together. I tried to be funny and make him laugh by saiyng "to stop it running away". Sadly my sister in-law was not impressed
