Next up in our World Cup team analysis articles, we take a look at Mexico. Miguel Herrera’s men kick off their campaign against Cameroon on Friday June 13 at 5pm, before squaring up to favourites Brazil four days later at 8pm, whilst a potentially key encounter against Croatia on Monday June 23 at 9pm may well decide their fate:

As mentioned in our article on Brazil earlier this week, a quirk in the scheduling hands β€œEl Tri” two Matchday one fixtures, making their squad immediate targets for our initial lineups before a blank Matchday two – all the more so given that opener against the Africans looks their best chance of racking up the goals.

Road to Qualification

Despite being regarded as a major favourite in their region, the Mexicans faltered badly in qualifying, consigning them to an arduous campaign. They clinched their first group by triumphing in all six fixtures but then finished fourth in a second group (which included USA, Jamaica, Panama , Honduras and Costa Rica), winning only two of 10 fixtures and finishing on 11 points, with a mere seven goals scored and nine against.

Herrera stepped in to steady the ship and miraculously salvaged qualification, thanks, in no small part, to Panama’s last gasp victory over the USA. That result handed the Mexicans the opportunity to face New Zealand in a two-legged play-off, with Herrera masterminding a convincing 9-3 aggregate win.

Most Starts Javier Hernandez (9), Carlos Salcido, Jesus Zavala (8), Francisco Rodriguez, Andres Guardado, Hector Moreno, Dos Santos (7)

Most Goals Oribe Peralta (8), Javier Hernandez, Jiminez (2)

The Key Targets

The new manager has wasted little time in forging a team of his own making. Herrera has opted for a 5-3-2 formation, mainly choosing players from the Mexican First Division, with most of the more well-known names such as Javier Hernandez, Giovanni Dos Santos and Andres Guardado struggling to make the starting XI, whilst Fiorentia midfielder Matias Fernandez is set to miss out with an ankle problem.

There’s little doubt that Oribe Peralta is the main man up front. Described in some quarters as the best striker in the tournament currently not plying his trade in Europe, the 30-year-old (priced at 7.8 in FantasyiTeam) looks certain to lead the line and boasts the ability to create as well as score goals; his prowess in the air carries a significant threat and his five goals over two legs against New Zealand earned Mexico’s passage.

Mexico’s forwards will be fed from the flanks, with Herrera putting great emphasis on supply from wide areas. Defensively, Mexico can leave themselves open and clean sheets look unlikely and, with that in mind, the potential attacking returns on offer from wing-backs Paul Aguilarand Miguel Layun could be the best bet for those looking to gamble on the Mexican rearguard. A quick and powerful runner, Layun assisted three of Mexico’s goals in the play-off win over New Zealand. Skipper Rafael Marquez is present again for those looking to back the more conventional defensive option, with the defensive trio available for 5.3, 5.2 and 5.4 in FantasyiTeam respectively.

In midfield, Porto’s combative Hector Herrera and home-based Carlos Pena and likely to given the freedom to go box-to-box, with Juan Carlos Medina providing the anchor in front of the centre-backs. The powerful Pena (5.5 in FantasyiTeam) is an intriguing option: nicknamed β€œGullit” due to his eye-catching locks, he’s been a key man for Herrera and could well emerge as a standout performer. A creator of goals as a link between midfield and the attack, Pena also has the ability to provide his own end product and has returned to form by striking back-to-back goals for club side, Leon, in his last two outings.

The Long Shots

With 11 goals and eight assists in La Liga this season, Giovani Dos Santos has enjoyed a superb season with Villarreal and looks tailor-made as a highly effective number ten. Herrera’s controversial decision to mainly favour home-based talent suggests the former Tottenham man may struggle to earn a starting berth but if Dos Santos can move up the pecking order in the forthcoming four friendlies, there’s clear potential on offer.

Alternatively, Alan Pulido could be one to consider. Handed a role alongside Peralta against Costa Rica recently, he fired a hat-trick to suggest he could be in line for a role in Herrera’s XI when the tournament gets underway – he comes in at just 6.5 in FantasyiTeam, compared to Dos Santos’ 7.9.

I have no idea, only other midfield option we seem to want is Fabregas, but I honestly cannot see it happening. If not Kroos, it's hard to figure out. Vidal isn't realistic, that young Dutch playmaker maybe?

Looks like this Kroos deal is dead , I'd love Fabregas but like you I'm skeptical.

The Kroos deal is far from dead imo, excluding all the rumours (''20 million bid'', ''LVG calls off deal'') the one certain piece of news we have is Hopfner (Bayern president) saying that they will not offer Kroos the money he wants, basically he's been issued a take it or leave it contract so it's really up to Kroos now, I reckon if Utd offer him what he wants then he'll be a Man Utd player. Of course Bayern don't have to sell but would they really want to let him leave for free next year

I like him, he has a great shot and good passing, he can kiiiinda tackle (better than scholes anyway) and I think he'll only get better with age.

He's slow though and I'm not sure he's what United need, they need more of a dynamic midfielder imo.

He'd be unreal at someone like Everton though as a CAM. Probably not quite good enough to make too many major moves at Bayern.

Not at the price people are talking about. He has been bigged up to be some sort of world star and he can't even get in the german team (I know their midfield is class). If I was spending the money being bandied about it would on a german mid it would be khedira, goetza or kreus.

I think you are wrong with the "anyone in cl".
Kroos wont settle with being in cl, he would want a dwir shot at winning it. But, he is only 24. So i do think he can throw away a year or 2 as he is not even close to he his own peak yet, this could spesk gor Utd. Key thing will be to put himsrlf in position to be able to win cl in future.

Haha to be honest the papers make up most of it, we have no idea what Kroos' intentions are and as Irish has said above whether LVG even wants him. I just feel if someone did want him, then offering him a significant wage rise would be enough to tempt him away from Bayern and they would probably be willing to sell rather than lose on free

I said before I would be extremely surprised if any top club offered more than 20m for him if he was in contract. He sees himself as better than he is and bayern don't hence why they won't pay him top player wages that he wants.

My money would be on him realising his negotiating tactic is not working and him signing the deal on the table.

Yeah that's the most likely outcome imo, been the story for United for a while now. Players fakes interest in joining them to pressure his club into offering him a new contract, when they do he states he was never serious about leaving. Everybody wins except for United who go from chasing Fabregas to scrambling to sign Fellaini

All good points lads , thanks.
So if he's not good enough for Bayern maybe LVG feels he's not good enough for United , after all LVG knows the player.

I'd say he would be good enough for Utd in the same way Carrick is but I think the money could be better spent elsewhere in the team. If you want a powerful running creative attacking midfielder then kroos is not your man imo

Trust lvg, his knowledge of world football is extensive and I'd say Utd fans will be pleasantly surprised by who he ends up bringing in.

Agree with the carrick comparison and I too feel Utd fans may be in for a few surprises, LVGs perspective will differ from what we have seen before and his knowledge/transfer targets will differ to , I think he will bring a genuine hunger to OT and a feel good factor back to uniteds footballing style.
He will be his own man and Saf will not bother him , he will get on with his job in a workmanlike fashion and I feel he will deliver CL next season and by his second season he will revitalise the team to the point if more than challenging for the league ,
I for one am genuinely exited , I wasn't like this when David Moyes was appointed.

Only thing i fear is, what after LvG. He will at maximum do his 3 years, no more, maybe less. Can we then find someone equally strong minded to carry on with his work, to use and motivate the new signings. In other words, can we find another dictator with the same style of play to get us onwards.

Well tbf it shouldn't be that hard , our away form was decent and translate some of those silly losses at home into wins and you should be back in the Top 4.
I'll say it here and now IM - anything less than a top 4 finish for LVG is not acceptable and I believe he feels the same and has said so at contract level ,
Nothing else is acceptable for me IMHO.

At least a proper challenge, but it's going to be incredibly tough..

At the moment, United have (I'd say) the 5th best squad in the league.

Chelsea, City, Spurs and Arsenal all have better squads on paper, and then there's Liverpool and Everton who arguably have 2 of the best young attacking managers in the league.. Top 4 is going to be some accomplishment next year!

Obviously there are loads of other variables like Arsenal's injuries and Pool in Europe but still. LVG has to get his signings right straight away and United have to be up around the top 4-6 for most of the season at least.

I meant progression from group stage, actually.

Between winning and not making out of groups there's not only quarters, but also round of 16, semi's and losing the final. A bit too large grey area there.

Well, not counting his finishing, everything else he did pretty well. Known that it was a question of confidence rather than that of technique (nobody can claim that the guy lacks technique), I don't see why he couldn't do well for ManU now.

He's gonna have a great World Cup I reckon.

Gervinho has no skill, can't cross or shoot but has pace. He goes missing in big games. I'd not be happy if he came back to Arsenal but I have heard he's done well at Roma

??? No skill? Can't cross? I understand he frustrated you a lot when he was in Arsenal, but that's simply not true.

Wait for him to score the winning goal against Arsenal at Old Trafford next season. I'll be laughing.

Main reason for the lack of cs in the second half of the season was the presence of Wilson at cm over huh imo. They never conceded many in games but always seemed to concede that sickening (if you have on of their players) single goal to ruin a good cs.

        He'll be 5.0m surely?

And given Stoke's poor defensive form since Pulis left, he'll have to produce some good attacking returns to justify it.

        I'm a fan of his though, FPL-wise.
