Having ran the rule over Costa Rica, we turn our World Cup attentions on England next, as our Group D analysis continues. Roy Hodgson’s side get their campaign underway with a showdown against Italy on Saturday June 14 at 11pm, before going head-to-head with Uruguay five days later at 9pm prior to a final encounter with underdogs, Costa Rica, on Tuesday June 24 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

England arrive in Brazil on the back of an unbeaten qualifying campaign. Drawn in a six-team group along with Ukraine, Montenegro, Poland, Moldova and San Marino, they won six and drew four of their 10 fixtures, scoring 31 times, conceding four, and registering six clean sheets.

Most Starts Joe Hart (10), Steven Gerrard (8), Phil Jagielka (7), Wayne Rooney, Tom Cleverley, Frank Lampard, Leighton Baines (6), Joleon Lescott, James Milner, Danny Welbeck, Kyle Walker, Gary Cahill (5)

Most Goals Wayne Rooney (7), Frank Lampard, Danny Welbeck (4)

Most Assists Leighton Baines, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Lennon, Rickie Lambert (2)

The Key Targets

Hodgson’s side have suffered back-to-back friendly defeats to Chile and Germany since the qualifiers, with only a 1-0 home win over Denmark providing comfort. Already deprived of Theo Walcott’s services due to injury, the England manager will be desperate for Wayne Rooney to fully recover from the groin problem that forced him out of United’s final few league games, with the Three Lions scoring just once in that trio of fixtures.

At the back, Hodgson’s decision to omit Ashley Cole from the squad allows Leighton Baines the chance to nail down the left-back berth. The Everton defender’s delivery is likely to ensure he receives more Fantasy interest than Glen Johnson on the opposite flank, though Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka should benefit from games that reward defensive actions such as recoveries, with the former also bringing a goal threat from set-pieces and corners. Looking at the FantasyiTeam prices, there’s very little between the quartet – Baines and Cahill are 5.9 and 5.8 respectively, whilst both Jagielka and Johnson are available for 5.7.

In midfield, Steven Gerrard – who sets you back 6.4 in FantasyiTeam – looks nailed-on, though the fitness of Arsenal pair Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain may have some bearing on the rest of Hodgson’s first-choice quartet. If fully-fit, Wilshere looks a candidate to start alongside the Liverpool skipper, though Jordan Henderson offers a similar level of industry and, at 5.5 in FantasyiTeam, may get the nod – certainly, given the energy-sapping conditions, it’s debatable whether Hodgson would start Frank Lampard along with Gerrard in the centre.

Up top, Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge will surely lead the line, with the former dropping a little deeper than the Liverpool frontman. Available for 9.7 and 9.6 respectively in FantasyiTeam, both may struggle to earn initial investment due to the difficult nature of the opening two group games, though, with a punt on the final Costa Rica match perhaps a safer move.

The Long Shots

On the flanks, the safe option would be James Milner on the right, with Danny Welbeck taking up the opposite wing. Milner’s versatility and work-rate are looked upon favourably by Hodgson, whilst Welbeck – who netted four times in five starts over the qualifiers – started four of the final five group games to suggest that, in spite of a lack of domestic game time, he remains firmly in the manager’s plans. Those two will set you back 5.5 and 7.6 in FantasyiTeam.

Liverpool’s in-form Raheem Sterling (5.6 in FantasyiTeam) offers a viable alternative on either side of the pitch and, as we saw in the Premier League last term, can potentially be just as explosive an option when introduced late on in games. Perhaps a risky option but his trickery and eye for goal could be worth a punt.

Further Analysis

Group A – Brazil,Cameroon, Croatia, Mexico

Group B – Australia, Chile, Holland, Spain

Do the prrotesters have a point ?(all puns intended). Some of the money being spent globally to stage high profile sporting events is just becoming ridiculous...not just football but all sorts of events.

Of coarse they do. The extragence of it is uncontrollable, needs to be some sort of tariff of like 50% of stadiums needed already built and in regular use before bidding. Highly doubt the South African purpose built stadiums are getting enough use to break even annually

We are having to deal with it on a lesser scale in Central Scotland with the commonwealth games. Evicting people from homes, corruption with people buying waste land before announcement of location for facilities, criminals making millions for security of sites etc etc. And all coming from tax and reduction in council services, just so a bunch of Z list athletes can find out what a Gregg's sausage roll tastes like.

Exactly...and to be fair the amount of money being spent is probably a drop in the ocean compared to the real headline events on the global stage. God only knows what corruption goes on at those events. I noticed Pele has had plenty to say on the matter as we get closer to the World Cup.

Seems so. I was reading up on the 1966 World Cup in this country. They just used the stadiums to hand and the players made do with fairly minimal facilities. I'm not advocating we go back to that but some degree of sense needs to be brought into it. It doesn't stop here for Brazil either, they will have all the massive spending for the Olympics as well.

Unfortunately no! I finished them last week but seeing as it is my final year some of us get called for a discussion or "viva" as it's called. So I have to pretty much go over a lot of areas and reread my thesis for my viva on Friday, I only found out today that I have one so I'm in slightly hairy form!

Kenneth Omeruo has signed a new deal that will keep him through the 2017/18.

"I'm thrilled to sign a new contract with Chelsea and am really excited about the future. To play at such a fantastic club is a real honour for me and I'll be working incredibly hard to be successful. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time in England so far and can't wait to get going."

                      Source: ChelseaFC.com.

If he is loaned to an English club would you consider him as a fantasy prospect?

He's a CB right? Depends on the team I suppose, I don't think he has great attacking returns. (Hasn't played in the PL yet either so slightly untested in that regard.)

I've honestly not seen a huge amount of him so will have to take your word. As Doosra says, it is an entirely different beast to master. He needs to experience but hard to know what teams would take him on loan with a relatively small amount of experience.

                                Nonsense.

It is because of the way that we are behaving, and have behaved, since Thatcher.

It is we, the electorate, who are a complete fecking disgrace.

The human conditions means people would rather be lied to than be told the truth.

Politicians are merely the reflection of our expectations, and there is an element of inescapable futility in trying to change the human condition,

Blimey. That is not the human condition. That is desperation.

And there is no futility in trying to change ourselves. You just have to learn to think bigger.

Is it hopeless pessimism or naiive optimism, who knows. I hold no hope for the human race. I'd rather spend my years in blissful seclusion than in a endless barbarous collective. Most people are evil, stupid, or both.

Indeed, there is truly an incredible amount of it flowing about. Sure our whole banking crisis goes back to huge investment in the property bubble and nobody had the foresight to suggest this was going to crash in a big way barring a few economists. And of those who did suggest that reckless investing and lending was a bad idea in the banking sector, well they were quickly replaced by yes men who would recklessly lend to ensure profit remained large.

A few years ago for the government elections I asked a friend of mine who he was voting for and his honest response:

"Sure I didn't know any of them so I whacked my vote down for the Sinner (Sinn Fein) because, you know, up the 'Ra"

And I think that sums up my naivety. I expect better but I know that this is the current system. Sure the Labour Party here in Ireland has recently taken a massive hammering because they simply lied about a huge number of their policies to get elected into the coalition government. It's not that this didn't need to happen, I wouldn't dream of pretending that I have anything more than a basic grasp of Ireland's economic situation but it is the fact that they said it wouldn't happen and clearly lied. I suppose it proves the point, honesty plays second fiddle.

Someone on here the other day thought it was a perfectly good reason that the issue isn't sorted cos it'll cost too much money.

And therein lies the problem: the love of money.

People think it's perfectly acceptable to be selfish, but if no one was selfish we wouldn't have anything to worry about other than natural disasters and illness - and most of those would be dwindling due to how big business contributed to these.

Yeah, idealistic, but I live an unselfish life (I even have someone my last ripple bar) so why can't others?

I agree. There is of course the need for reward ingrained in human society but it enters a situation of utter excess.

The entire issue is that we inevitably reach the argument of how much is a life worth? That is completely subjective but, more to the point, a load of bollocks. A life is not worth money, it is beyond that and I think the US really has some f**ked up notions about these issues. This paranoia over the right to bear arms etc, is there no modernisation? That idea made sense when the US was at war with the biggest empire on the planet, not now.

They say it's idealistic but I frankly don't give a shit, you're entirely correct that treating others correctly and properly is a better way to live.

Totally agree. I don't think this 'survival of the fittest' argument has helped either. Religion has down some screwed up things but I can't see how the evolution theory has made people better. Religion often acted/acts as the instrument of a loving god but when you look at what they did/do it's clearly more akin to the devil. If there is/was a god he'd so kick most religions' arses. And then Dawkin's.

Anyone who puts themselves above others is part of the problem.

Well how much of a negative impact can knowledge have? Evolution is a fact, what people take from this is entirely their prerogative, but also entirely of their own making.

See I think the fundamental basis for a lot of religious doctrine was the preaching of equality and human rights, or at least that is at the very core. Unfortunately it has been twisted repeatedly by people for gain etc So I agree with you absolutely.

As for the radical atheists, I am a man of science but nowhere does it point to me that evolution is in any way a support for atheism. It flies in the face of current religious beliefs in a number of systems but that is not the same as discounting the presence of some sort of higher being. My own gut feeling on it is that humanity hardly understands many of the components of our own bodies let alone the universe. I don't think we're in any position to declare whether or not there is the existence of something greater, I simply do not believe we are capable of it yet. But that of course is massively subjective too 😉

I consider myself a rafical Atheist.

The evil perpetrated by religion in the past, and the millions of people it kills today is only outweighed by the evils of the genocidal maniac the religious people claim to be regulating our world.

And that depends on what view of "God" you subscribe to. If such a being exists, is he/she/it a being that watches over us and allows terrible things to happen?

Or is he/she/it simply a creator that left the universe to its own devices long ago? Are there other possibilities not yet hypothesised and explored?

It is all vastly subjective, for what it is worth I agree with you that religious institutions have caused great suffering across the world.

This view that, because you cant prove the non exitence o something, really grind me. It is as likely, is less so, than the idea that the world was created by a hord of super intelligent horse/pig hybrids that live on the centre of the sun. No rationale, or critical thinking applied can lead to any coclusion nearing theism, much less an omnipotent deity.

I would never take that view because it is absolutely bred in ignorance!

But what I will maintain is that humanity is nowhere near the intellectual level we think we are, we have much much more to learn about the universe before we can even begin to appreciate such concepts. Blind faith is utterly flawed and dangerous but the mind must be kept open as well, that is the danger that people become too close minded on both sides of the spectrum.

The default is not knowing something. Any claim shoulders the burden of proof. There is no proof, what justifies the claim?

I need to sleep now. I work in science and have spent years studying specific aspects of nature. The intricacies of all this has led me to feel that chance is just so improbable, in my field of study it just screams design. But I wouldn't want to push my beliefs on others, I believe we all have a right to choose.

                                            Goodnight all.

But that is my very point, we are not at any level to make any claims at all. We are barely out of the caves in a universal sense, we still do not understand many processes on our own planet. How could we possibly feel in any way able to justify any such claims?

That is my personal belief, humanity has a lot of learning to do before such arguments can really be explored in appropriate detail. Simple belief is flawed, basic scientific facts (I say basic meaning in a relative to the understanding of the universe sense, not that any of these discoveries are not the product of brilliant work) is not enough yet. Indeed, even our "facts" are subject to change very often as our knowledge grows.

Funny enough that I share some inkling like that from my years in science and the brain but I would only be able to claim it an inkling, I do not have remotely enough evidence for it to be anything else.

There is absolutely that issue as well. Buddhism is usually very good but a lot are such hypocrites. But then, it is wrong to paint all with the same brush.

                                          A little anecdote:

During the Irish civil war my grandfather was but a wee nipper in school when rebels ambushed an Irish Free State Army convoy right outside the school house. The priest in charge of the school was out like a flash into the battle, stood and demanded the men stop such abhorrent, evil killing of their own countrymen especially when putting young childrens' lives at stake and sent them in opposite directions to ensure there would be no more fighting down the road.

It is only an anecdote but I think it serves well to show that, while there have been many atrocities, there has been good too.

I oppose Budhism because I oppose the hirreditary principle. It takes young children from theirs mothers because tey believe them to be the reincarnation of a lama. Not tht it matters, the Chinese have basically killed Budhism. There is an illigitimate Panchem Lama, so there will be an illigitimate Dalai Lama.

Banning religion would be totally counter-productive, and would oppose one of the most despicable Cheistian damnations of thought crime, but I do think instatutionalised indoctriantion of children should be banned, and child genital mutilation should be banned, and laws should be entirely secular (the UK are bringing in Sharia law into inheritance claims whoch makes me sick) and above all religion shouldnt recore this unjustifiable rverence that it has. It should be open to ridicule and criticism, both morally and factually.

No, it is patience. Those who are intolerant have not yet grown up, and therefore do not know themselves. How then, are they to know others?

What they need, is a special sort of mirror ...

How long should we wait? How many children will be molested? How many children will have their genitals mutilated? How many preists will be sheltered by the vatican? How many children in Ruwanda had to be massacred? How many apostates have to be stoned? How bad does the HIV crisis in Africa have to get until we can be patient no more?

This ... these have nothing to do with religion, but are about human cruelty. We do not tolerate these things. But we do tolerate people's beliefs in their God.

As a GREAT Irish Comedian was fond of saying - "May your God go with you ... "

I had a scathing retort that was moderted. In sum, it has eveything to do with religion. It is written in the blood of women and children throughput the centuries, and in the lives and pain of people everyday. It deserves no respect, and no protection.

                                      I know what you're saying.

There is a need for faith in many things. However, many people believe what they want to believe. God could appear and make himself known to some and they'd choose not to believe it because they don't want to live as 'he' asks them to. Another could see the transformation of one kind to another take place in front of them, but still ignore it as they need hope. For me, it comes down to what makes people better.

And I agree that it is really at it's core what makes people better, it is a tough nut to crack though.

I guess it comes down to 'if everyone followed this ideology/way of life, would this lead to a utopia?' It depends on one's idea of 'utopia'. For me, total equality, selflessness, empathy and admitting that we need guidance. To get that, do we need to remove those who don't agree? What gives us the right? Don't others have the freedom of speech to disagree? It's not something that we can easily enforce without going against out very principles.

That is the very issue, it will never be a sudden change but a more gradual shift in society as such radical thinking is slowly removed generation after generation. This of course is a big problem as many humans are incredibly impatient.

My firm belief, aside from mental illness, is that it is dictated by how you are raised. Children's brains are incredibly sensitive to the world around them and learning from that. If you expose them to a world of hatred, bigotry or any other modern horror than 99% of the time that's the same world they will want to live in.

                                Catullus:

                                Vivamus mea Lesbia, atque amemus,
                                rumoresque senum severiorum
                                omnes unius aestimemus assis!
                                soles occidere et redire possunt:
nobis cum semel occidit brevis lux,
                                nox est perpetua una dormienda.
da mi basia mille, deinde centum,
dein mille altera, dein secunda centum,
deinde usque altera mille, deinde centum.
                                dein, cum milia multa fecerimus,
                                conturbabimus illa, ne sciamus,

My sweetest Lesbia, let us live and love,
And though the sager sort our deeds reprove,
Let us not weigh them : Heaven's great lamps do dive
Into their west, and straight again revive,
But soon as once set is our little light,
Then must we sleep one ever-during night.
If all would lead their lives in love like me,
Then bloody swords and armor should not be,
No drum nor trumpet peaceful sleeps should move,
Unless alarm came from the camp of love.
But fools do live, and waste their little light,
And seek with pain their ever-during night.

When timely death my life and fortune ends,
Let not my hearse be vext with mourning friends,
But let all lovers, rich in triumph, come
                                  And with sweet pastimes grace my happy tomb;
And, Lesbia, close up thou my little light,
And crown with love my ever-during night.

Absolutely, such a sharp tactical mind. What stands out even more for me is how he could step back from military glory and lead the empire through such an extended period of peace. That is true wisdom in my books!

Sometimes the ignorance of sports journalists(or any kind of journalist) really surprises me. In Italy, everybody is saying that Chicharito is the first choice for Inter. But they're referring to him as a winger....they believe he's like Tom Ince...

Unlikely to start, although he is in competition with Paulinho.

Yeah..and if he does what position ?...With Yaya possibly leaving and Pell having the habit of pushing Fernandinho further forward in Yaya's occasional absence last season he's firmly on the radar. He looked the part for sure.

Paulinho likely to play that role with Gustavo alongside (more defensive). May see some sub appearances though or perhaps in the 3rd game of the groups if it's already won and 1st place in the bag.

Probably not the place for it due to so many views. Things also seem to have a way of getting nasty discussing that topic.

Matchdays will be a lot different on here in future.
Will be more like the Dugout Discussion chat room in a way.
Matchday bans would help with the situation of course.
Plenty to be discussed before the season starts so any ideas you have could be useful to add.

I don't know how your moderation works really so I can't really say. Will have a think about it though. There should be some good discussion on a matchday thread and the second half of this season was just ruined by the incessant taunting of trolls. I know it's supposed to be funny but it's boring when it's day in and day out. Was wondering why the mods didn't something so I can't rule out the possibility thats it's a few of the mods having a larf. No, but seriously.........

Well, the Glazers borrowed most of the money
to buy the club from the Yeehaw Bank of Toad Suck, Arkansas
so I think that makes the bank president, Mr. Floyd Yeehaw III,
the new owner of the club. I'm sure he'll maintain the high standards the Glazers
have shown over the past few years.

Why do people need to declare themselves to any religion?

I rarely even think about religion. I fail to see how taking a stab in the dark & choosing a religion, or just believing the religion u were into is 100% correct, ever benefits anyone.

As a wise man once said, God is for those that are scared of the dark.
