As we announced last week, FantasyiTeam (FiT) have released one of the first available Fantasy Football games geared towards the Brazil 2014 World Cup:

A free Fantasy football app, FiT is available on a number of mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, iPodTouch and Android. It’s free to download and play, so you can already go in and start drafting up your starting XI with unlimited transfers.

We’ll be supporting FiT throughout the summer and have an official Fantasy Football Scout League, with a £500 Amazon voucher available to the winner. There’s also the small matter of a £5k holiday available as the prize to the overall FiT World Cup winner.

In this, our second article on the game, we take a closer look at the nuts and bolts involved in the scoring system and principles involved when making transfers, monitoring price changes and maximising your squad for each Gameweek.

Team Selection

FiT hands us managers an initial budget of £75m to select our starting XI. In terms of formation, there are seven systems (4-4-2, 4-3-3, 4-5-1, 5-4-1, 5-3-2, 3-5-2 or 3-4-3) available to choose from – similarly to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, you must have at least three defenders and no more than a trio of forwards in your lineup.

For the initial group stages, you can only pick a maximum of three players from any side. This quota increases as the tournament progresses, though – rising to four in the first knockout round, five in the quarter-finals and six in both the semi-finals and final.

Scoring Points

The scoring system is relatively straightforward. Any player who starts a game is awarded two points, though an appearance off the bench earns a single point.

Keepers and defenders both benefit from clean sheets. Providing they play 60+ minutes and the team doesn’t concede, they earn five points, though a single point is lost for every goal against. If a game goes to extra-time, a team will only register a clean sheet if they fail to concede over the entire 120 minutes.

In terms of goals scored, keepers and defenders are awarded seven points for finding the net, whilst midfielders pick up six points and forwards five. An assist is worth three points, regardless of position.*

Disciplinary-wise, a red card deducts five points from a player’s score, though yellows do not have any detrimental effect. Spot-kicks are also crucial – keepers earn five points for saving a penalty, whilst a missed attempt deducts three points from the taker’s total. This does not apply to penalty shoot-outs, however.

As in the FPL game, Captains earn us double points. A skipper can be set anytime, as long as it is 10 mins before kick-off. You are however, only allowed one captain per Gameweek, but if the first captain you select doesn’t play AND is not on the bench, then you can choose another armband option in that Gameweek.

When the games kick off, it’s worth mentioning that you can also follow the action via the Matchday Centre, with goals and assists updated as they happen.

*To elaborate on the official assist rules:

“Assists are awarded to the player who makes the last touch before the goal is scored and he must be from the goal scoring team. If after this last touch by a player of the goal scoring team, a player from the opposing team touches the ball inside the penalty area, altering the intended direction of the ball, the assist is still given. If a penalty is given, the player earning the penalty will receive an assist if a goal is directly scored, but not if he takes the penalty himself. This rule DOES NOW apply to players winning free-kicks. All assists are carefully reviewed, but remain provisional until verification is obtained. To avoid doubt, points awarded are subject to change until the Gameweek ends, at which point no further adjustments will be made.”

Transfers

The FiT World Cup game consists of seven Gameweeks – three for the group stages and the remaining four for each of the knockout rounds.

We’re handed three free transfers per Gameweek to restructure our side, essentially giving us 14 players per round (more on that in a bit), though there is also the option to purchase a fourth, “Additional Transfer” per round, it costs 100 FiT Credits to do so.

Transfers do not roll over each Gameweek – essentially, you use ‘em or lose ‘em. Once the group stages are over, we’re handed unlimited transfers to restructure our sides before the first game of the knockout stages gets underway.

As indicated, there’s a twist to the FiT transfer strategy, outlined brilliantly in a recent comment post by veteran player, Rbcantona7:

  • The order of fixtures matters, if you have a player starting in one game, once that game has started you can transfer out that player for a player starting in a later game and still receive points for both. This effectively means that if you have three transfers to use in a game round you can be gaining points from up to 14 players.
  • You can also rotate expensive players. Rather than having three big hitters in your team at the start of a Gameweek taking up a huge chunk of your budget, if you plan it right you’ll have the one playing first in your team at the start of your gameweek. Once they’ve played, you can then swap them out for the one playing next and so on. This means you can have three big hitters playing without it having too much of an effect on the rest of your team.

The FiT rules give an example scenario where this strategy could come into play:

“You could have David Silva in your iTeam for the 8pm game against the Netherlands on Friday 13th June, you can then transfer him out while Spain are playing, say 9pm, and still receive his points for the rest of the game. You could bring in Alexis Sanchez in his place and then score points for him as well in the Chile v Australia fixture at 11pm on the same day.”

Finally, it’s crucial that your trades must be made at least 10 minutes before a game gets underway in order for the transfer to go through. Basically, this rule is advantageous to the more active Fantasy manager, affording us the chance to monitor teamsheets and fine-tune our tinkering prior to kick-off.

Player Prices

Keeping an eye on the transfer market is advised. The iTeam game uses a PlayerDAQ index which changes every six hours in accordance with player popularity – like FPL, it’ll pay to keep abreast of the bandwagons and watch out for price drops in order to maximise our team budgets. Unlike FPL, for example, if you purchase a player for 10.0 and he rises to 10.2, your selling price is 10.2 as opposed to 10.1.

Fantasy Football Scout League

We’ve already set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league for you to join – the league name is Fantasy Football Scout and the pin is 4915.

My problem with McDs is the recovered balls, nothing else actually. I feel I can adapt to the other aspects but playing 5-4-1 is just ridiculous and pure luck.

This, I couldn't care less if there was a DGW, that's something which they game itself can't influence(although they've sort of cheated here), but they can influence the scoring system.

Yeah, the RB and block points are ridiculous. But I'd expect them to change that.

What is to be feared is that they only change it after they've seen the scores in action and we have already picked our players.

YeSorry, agreed. I like the idea of a 23 man squad, no transfers as you will have to think about when round 3 comes along and some teams play a weakened side. Also stops people from jumping on the bandwagons - you have to get it right first time.

Recovered balls is a killer though.

The one above has no DGWs and no recovered ball nonsense. I would be eligible for a prize and the scoring is FPL like except for bonus points which is man in the stand style.
McD will be pretty template on here with recovered ball superstars being made captain so that's a big turn off.

Schär (pronounced 'share' or as in the singer Cher) has had a knee injury and has not been 100% right since Basel's defeat against Valencia. He's being given time to get back to full fitness.

If fit, I would think Schär plays, but it's really not clearcut. He's Switzerland biggest talent and the only defender who can set up attacks from the back. The other candidates are either out of form (van Bergen, Djourou), unfit (Lustenberger) or uncomfortable on the ball (Senderos).

Djourou and Senderos played tonight, but the test doesn't tell us much, as neither came under any real pressure from Jamaica. And as Lustenberger is definitely a candidate if fit, there's a fair amount of doubt in the Swiss central defence.

Depending on opponents, the Nati line-up might well be:

      ------------------------Benaglio---------------------------

Just made a Fox Sports team to see what the prices were like, seems pretty reasonably priced with FPL style rules.

    Akinfeev, Begovic
Vertonghen, Rojo, Carvajal, Schaar, De Sciglio
    Shaqiri, KDB, Cuadrado, Oscar, Pjanic
    Messi, Neymar, Benzema

Suppose it's not too hard to make a good team actually.

You confident on Carvajal? Great front 8, that.

Spain guy i follow thinks this will be the XI in the opener:
Casillas; Azpi, Sergio Ramos, Piqué, Jordi Alba; Xabi Alonso, Busquets, Xavi; Iniesta, Cesc/Silva, Pedro.

I'm thinking same XI with Carvajal over Azpi but it's just based on a few things I've read here and there.

If I actually played this FPL game and I had this team, I have 15k (it's in AU dollars) left over which gets Azpi in exactly.

Hey guys, for those who would want to play World Cup fantasy, there is that McDonald's game. But there's a shitload of rules, 23 man squad, no transfers, blah blah blah.
But then, there's this game I found, it's just like FPL. 15 players, you get transfers, just as we know. It is simpler.

Regardless. Point system is just a point system. You check what brings the points and adjust your team to that. What does it matter if it is defensive and not the attacking players who bring the most points?

Because nobody wants to cheer for recovered balls and actually sit through a game counting how many times his defender has intercepted the ball. It's not how you enjoy watching football so why would it be how you enjoy playing fantasy football?

You don't have to count and cheer them during the match. You can let McDonald's to count them, and then check them after the match and cheer for it if it goes right.

It's like betting on the number of corners in the match.

And generally, I very much like it that other things than goals are rewarded. Even if this time some defensive efforts are over-rewarded.

Yes maybe the UFPL rules would be better but this is not the case. Currently the scoring rules are crap in my opinion and I really hope they sort it out. Fox Australia may not be the most popular by any stretch of the imagination but at least it has a tried and tested formula.

It has slightly more complicated points system, namely that there are more ways to make points, and that's it really. Generally, having more ways to make points is an advantage, especially in short living games like this, because it can help to make differences.

Hello all, anyone having a go at the Sun game for the WC?

    RMT!

    Benaglio (Swiss)
    Luiz Ayovi (Ecuador) Baines Alba
    Ribery Ozil Shirokov
    Neymar Messi Dzeko

Bare in mind this is for the whole group stage. Any issues? TY

this looks really good...ozil will be a good pick in german colours, and dzeko too could do some unexpected damage

Really like it mate. Personally wouldn't have Baines due to it being such a tough group (maybe Belgian/Russian instead. Think Reus/Muller are better options to Ozil if they are mids and the same price although he's a good option too. Rest looks great.

Thanks both. Ozil and Baines are my biggest concerns aswel. Reus and Muller are both mids and cheaper but am I right in thinking Ozil is more nailed and on pens? As for baines I think we have a slim chance of two cleanies but may swap him for Azpi and go double Spain def assuming he's first choice

ozil is more nailed on than muller, but less so than reus imo....but he is on pens and seems to do well for Germany...azpi is probably a better option than baines, considering their group is easier and England are just so untrustworthy

I have read an article which suggested Khedira's return may mean Kroos plays number 10 in place of Ozil instead. Very good source actually but I'm sure he was just speculating at this point as it's still early.

Carvajal/Azpi also raises question marks actually so that's not a certainty either and maybe risky to double up with a tough group.

      Benaglio to Ospina,
      Ayovi to Rodriguez,
      Ozil to Muller,
      Baines to Rojo.

Yeah looking at it now Rodriguez seems to be a ridiculous bargain at 1.0.

    Besides from Lallana and Lambert...

    Ben Smith ‏@BenSmithBBC 57s
Brendan Rodgers also hopeful of signing Alberto Moreno, Dejan Lovren and Emre Can in the next fortnight.

Would hardly call this super quality signings but they're good, with potential (Moreno in particular) and give Liverpool some depth. Still think they could do better though as none of these players walks straight into their XI IMO except Moreno (more due to lack of options at the minute).

Agree not super signings but addressing squad depth clearly very important for BR during this summer signing period.

Agree that they need depth but 1 maybe 2 top signings would have been great as well to compete better in the CL and give the whole squad a boost.

if they could change lambo to>remy/lukaku would be a great transfer window imo. they are not in position to make top signings yet.

well emre can and alberto moreno are great prospects, and under BR's guidance can flourish...similarly lovren was great for soton this season and is a better defender than skrtel and sakho imo

Like I've said they're good signings but I feel they could've done with 1 top defensive signing and 1 top midfield signing and then filled up the squad with some depth which is what they're doing.

Like you say, Moreno is a great prospect and I expect him to be a good signing (although 20m euros seems quite steep) whereas for Can I have my reservations. Think he will do alright but wouldn't classify him as a "great" prospect and will only be a slight improvement on the likes of Allen/Lucas.

Lovren again is a good signing but he's arguably not much better than either Skrtel or Sakho and definitely not Agger IMO.

All in all, it's good transfer business and they definitely need the squad as they wouldn't be able to cope with any injuries which will undoubtedly come due to fixture congestion but, all in all, I think a top signing or 2 are necessary. Of course we are still on the "gossip" level and no actual business has been done so we'll just have to wait and see how it pans out.

yeah they are crying out for a few defensive marquee signings, but im saying when you consider these deals on its own merits they are all pretty solid
