Next up in our series of World Cup 2014 articles, we cast an eye over Group E favourites, France. Didier Deschamps’ side could be set for significant investment over the group stages, with a trio of kind-looking fixtures on the horizon – up first, they face Honduras on Sunday June 15 at 8pm before squaring up to Switzerland five days later at 8pm and then taking on Ecuador on Wednesday June 25 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

The French finished second to Spain in a group that also included Finland, Georgia and Belarus. Winning five and drawing two of their eight matches, their home loss to the defending champions proved costly and forced them into a play-off with Ukraine. After losing the first leg 2-0 on their travels, Deschamps’ side looked dead and buried but a change in tactics from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 proved pivotal and saw them rack up a 3-0 win, thus progressing to next month’s tournament by the narrowest of margins.

Most Starts Hugo Lloris, Franck Ribery (10), Patrice Evra (8), Karim Benzema, Blaise Matuidi (7) Mathieu Valbuena, Olivier Giroud, Paul Pogba, Laurent Koscielny (6), Mamadou Sakho, Yohan Cabaye (5)

Most Goals Franck Ribery (5), Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud (2)

Most Assists Franck Ribery, Mathieu Valbuena (5), Karim Benzema (2)

The Key Targets

Deschamps’ decision to retain the 4-3-3 system in the subsequent two friendlies has earned back-to-back wins over Holland (2-0) and Norway (4-0) and suggests that his side could be set to pick up the Fantasy points at both ends of the pitch in the group stages, at least.

At the back, most of the likely starters ply their trade in the English top-flight. Hugo Lloris is nailed-on between the posts, whilst Laurent Koscielny, Patrice Evra and Mathieu Debuchy are also favoured to be named in the XI, with Eliaquim Mangala, Rafael Varane or Mamadou Sakho set to battle it out for the role alongside the Arsenal man in the heart of the back-four. In FantasyiTeam, Debuchy is the cheaper of the two full-backs at 5.8 to Evra’s 6.0, whilst Koscielny is more budget-friendly than either, coming in at 5.7.

In central midfield, Paul Pogba and Blaise Matuidi should get the nod regardless of formation. Those two would expect to make up the double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1, though the introduction of Yohan Cabaye as a deep-lying option in front of the back-four has allowed both Pogba and Matuidi license to bomb forward and score against Norway and Holland respectively in recent friendlies. Cabaye is the cheapest of the three in in FantasyiTeam at 6.1, with Matuidi coming in at 6.2, whilst Pogba, at 6.7, could still be worth the extra outlay if he can replicate the form that produced seven goals and seven assists for Juventus last term.

Franck Ribery missed the friendly win over Norway earlier this week as he continue to struggle with a back problem. The Bayern Munich man (available for 7.6 in FantasyiTeam) is on course to be ready for the start of the tournament, though, and with five goals and five assists in qualifying, it’s crystal clear just how crucial his contribution will be for Les Bleus.

Real Madrid’s versatile Karim Benzema seems the most nailed-on of any forward. Available to play in any of the front three positions in a 4-3-3, he could also be fielded in “the hole” or as the most advanced forward in a 4-2-3-1 and perhaps offers a greater guarantee of game time over Olivier Giroud, who will either play through the middle or be forced onto the bench. It’s potentially significant that Deschamps opted for Benzema (priced at 9.8 in FantasyiTeam) as the lone striker in th crucial second-leg play-off clash against Croatia, though the Arsenal man – who sets you back in 9.0 in FantasyiTeam, arrives in decent form, with a finely-taken double against the Norwegians on Tuesday evening.

The Long Shots

Mathieu Valbuena started six of the final seven qualifying games and has more than merited his place in the squad at the expense of Samir Nasri. The Marseille man proved a crucial creator for the French, teeing up five assists, and turned in another hugely impressive showing earlier in the week by producing a trio of assists in the 4-0 win over Norway. Valbuena could shine on the right of a 4-3-3 and at just 6.1 in FantasyiTeam, has the potential to be a bargain if he can nail down a starting role.

Alternatively, Antoine Griezmann could be the man to watch. The 23-year-old is much in demand after firing 16 goals for Real Sociedad last term and has been linked with a move to Arsenal over the summer – available for 7.7 in in FantasyiTeam (and classified as a forward), he’s started each of the last two on the left of the front three but could also switch flanks to accommodate Ribery when the tournament gets up and running.

Managed to post at the end of the last article but I thought this would be interesting viewing so I'll repost.

Bale's hatty agains Inter. When you consider this was the game he announced himself as a superstar on the European stage, it is pretty interesting to watch his highlights.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6QmtUQRwQw

His touch is often not great and his delivery also not great, with the only real good uses of the ballbeing the three finishes.

His sheer physical prowess is scary though

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Bale is just fortunate to have been blessed with natural pace. He is nothing without it. I mean, if I could run as fast as he does, I'd be pretty decent at kicking a soccer ball around too.

I personally think that it is pretty bad goalkeeping for the first 2 goals.

No way Cesar should be beaten twice in the same manner to the far post from that range like that.

Just say it as it is: his first touch is often awkward. And his dribbling is second rate as well. It still amazes me that after this match so many people announced him as as good as or better than Messi (Cristiano Ronaldo was out of the hype at that point). Yeah, the physical power. That there is. And he makes use of it. But seriously, most of the time it doesn't work. Take away those two first goals that a top GK should have saved, at least one of them, and you would say that he had a bad match. And sheer physical power doesn't Messi make.

That's why he'll never be on the same level as Ronaldo or Messi, but he'll still score a truck load of goals.

He's a good passer and he can shoot like a tank, but his main strengths come from the fact that he grew up as a cross country runner, and he has more pace/power than nearly anyone in the game.

I'm not complaining, the only reason he scored the winners for both the Copa Del Rey AND the Champions League is because he had the pace to get to the ball before the defenders..

He's only going to get better too 😎

It was a pretty good header to a not obvious ball as well. But yeah, I agree with above. His game is pace and power, and he'll score a lot of goals for that, but people just should stop praising him as one of the best.

Wow you forget how good he actually is when you don't see him so much.

Once he becomes more of a main man at Real I reckon he will tear up the Spanish leagues smashing records along the way. Is he as good a dribbler as messi in tight spaces? no way, is he as good as him out wide? very close call, is he as good a striker as ronaldo? probably not but he has a few years on him (Ronaldo 29 going to be 30 this feb while Bale is only 24 about to turn 25). While his dribbling technique and touch are not quite as good as the other two he does have some great tekkers of his own which is a testament to him after being coached through the Brittish system.

Has Real Madrid become Arsenal's feeder club?
Since that Ozil thing happened, we get linked to almost everyone except the 100 million guys. Benzema. Morata. And now, Morata.

And why exactly would Madrid sell a guy who starts every match, and was vastly better than their 100 million guys in the most important match of the season?
We guys just have our hopes too high up -_-

You're not getting Di Maria, you can have the rest, but leave Ángel out of this! 🙁

Benzema can be easily replaced, he's nothing that special for us even though he's had one of his best seasons, he's quality, but there's other quality out there if we sell him.

Morata hasn't lived up to the hype imo.

I know. If you guys get Suarez, selling Benzema to us would be great business for both the clubs.

As of di Maria, hard to believe. But then again, Ozil was your second best player when you guys sold him.

All of the above (including Ozil) are players who Real didn't really need anyone/won't need anymore.

If they sign a striker this summer, then one of Benzema or Morata will be on the way out, they don't need 3 strikers and whoever they buy will be better than them.

They bought Bale and Isco, so they didn't need Ozil anymore and sold him to pocket some cash for future buys.

Just had a search and read a couple of articles on Di Maria.

Wouldn't surprise me if they did sell him tbh, despite his good form this season. They've already got Isco, who is younger and will only get better and they're getting Iturbe from Verona who's supposedly a new superstar.

I really rate Isco, he was quality for Malaga and started really well for Madrid, before Bale settled.

Ancelotti then changed the formation, leaving him without a natural position in the side, but I think he's been changing his game slightly to a deeper role in a midfield 3 (where Di Maria's been playing) as he did when he came on in the CL final or out wide in a 442 like he played in the CDR final.

I can see him taking over from Di Maria next season and having Iturbe and Jese as the attacking sub options, leaving Di Maria potentially surplus to requirements.

I've seen hundreds of teams and they are all quite varied. Most people have gone with a Brazilian defender, midfielder and forward due to them having a double in GR1. Budget is tight at the start of the tournament, so you can only go with 3 or 4 top class players.

Still looking for a good fantasy world cup game

The McDonalds one is a definite no for a list of reasons as long as my arm.
The Sun one looked alright until I saw some silly gimicky thing about spontaneous transfer windows announced via Sun sport or some such. The also heap points on whichever numpty their correspondent says played well and I don't think they award points for assists?
The Telegraph charges per entry, screw that.
The Mirror looks the best of a bad bunch so far I have to say. 15 players picked like in FPL, no silly points awarding for blocked shots. The only drawbacks seem to be Brazil & Mexico having a "double gameweek" in the opening set of fixtures and the fact that you only get 3 transfers between each set of group matches.

Any ones i've missed ? will the Guardian have a game

imo Daily Telegraph is the best one available. Yeah it's £3, but to me that is peanuts! I'd rather play £3 for a half decent game with good rules, than £0 for the McDonalds one...which is a shambles.

40 transfers makes for a decent game, plus the budget is very restrictive = skill required.

Put some planning into I-Team. Lots of long-term transfers to work out, with only 3 per gameweek..

    Neur
    Armero Luiz Godin Ramos Schaer
    Pirlo Gerrard De Bruyne
    Messi Neymar(c)

    After Uruguay game, sell Godin+Saurez > Valbuena+Messi

    Then Messi>Ronny

    GW2

    Neymar(no fixture)>RVP v Aus
    RVP>Balotelli v Costa Rica
    Balotelli>Messi v Iran

Of course, if player values and fluctuate, and injuries occur, it could all be up the swanny!

With so many games in each gameround I think most people will end up blowing their transfers quite easily. It's good to have a plan but like you say, injuries and player values changing can cause havoc. The pro's tend to wait for line-ups before making transfers, but sadly, most make transfers very, very early, forcing a players price up way before kick off time.

      1) Not available until 8th June. Makes forming leagues with friends a pain.

      2) Rules were written by some people who have clearly never played Fantasy Football, and who spent 20 minutes reading the rules from the previous WC and ultimately made some glaring errors.

Cavani has had a meeting with PSG staff, and he was assured that he will be used more in CF role next season and he should now be staying in Paris.

that's good news for PSG, because they cannot rely on Zlatan as CF all season long, it will only lead him to get injured when the big games start. He needs to rest in some matches too. Not that he didn't this season, sure he did, but not often enough. Cavani needs to get more runs in the middle.

You can only beat who's in front of you.

How good will Peru be? I might be wrong, but they're without the only 3 players I've heard of, they only have 7 players with 15 caps in the squad, and a total of 10 international goals in the squad.

I can't see them being much better than Moldova.

Yeah, but werent much routing against any even distantly decent opponent.

Peru probably is quite sub-standard, though, you're right about that. I'd imagine they're better than Moldova, but at home England should be able to win them by 2 at least.

just checked, and they never lost a match by more than 2 goals during their qualifiers. But if they come with a weakened squad to this one, then a routing should be on papers.

So, Brazil play their second game vs Mexico at 4pm on 17 June. Belgium play their first game at 1 pm(prior to the Brazil fixture) also on 17 June.

Round 1 for Maccy D ends on 17 June. Round two starts on 17 June.

We can change our captains..."Your team captain, which you can change for each round"... When is that exactly going to be on the 17th of June?

Considering the Brazil game is subsequent to the Belgium game I'm not so sure Brazil will actually have a DGW 1.

you see, the substitutions deadline does not work like that for this game. It will be a little bit before the Brazil-Mexico match - for players playing for Brazil and Mexico. For the players of other teams, it will be a little bit before their teams' matches start.

The important thing to know is when the substitutions open. I hope - and guess - it is soon after the first round has started.

Breaking news: Brazil and Mexico probably do NOT have a double GW in McD fantasy foot, and that will NOT cause us any team selection problems.

This is because of their absolutely genius transfer and substitution rules, which is that we select 23 players for the whole group stage and then tweak our preferred XI for each round.

The supposed problem with this is that we have to select our team for the second round before the first round is over. What problems could that pose? That we could have to choose team from players without knowing anything about their first round match, including whether they are injured. The two things affected by this information are (1) transfers and (2) selection of first XI.

    1. There are no transfers in group stage, so Russia-Korea match doesn't matter: if your captain Shirokov gets injured, you still cannot transfer him out for 2nd round. So, the order of matches is no matter here.

    2. The selection of the playing XI can be tweaked during the round, and you can take a player off your lineup as long as his team has not played during that round. So, again, you can either initially line your Russians and Koreans up for the second round, or you can leave them out, and then you can change this according to who is fit when the actual 2nd round matches take place. Thus, because you are not tied to your initial starting XI for the whole round, there is no problem.

I'm thinking more about recovered balls etc.

The substitutions bit seems straight forward to me.

And taking out transfers makes for a much easier game than the alternative which is to have a DGW or a GW every single day.

I expect those block and RB rules to change as well. Aside from those parts, this is pretty brilliantly thought out game.

And that point system will be a fecking anti-casual weapon.

It is all really crystal clear to me now. The whole logic of that strange transfer and substitute system is just to deal with the calendar without DGW's.

People have hard time understanding it, because they can't get over their habitual thought patterns that they've learned from the fantasy football they've played. But the conditions for this fantasy football are different, and the game is made according to that.

DGW's would have been a problem to a tournament like this, especially as half of the casuals probably would have not understood that they exist. So the key is to think how they could deal with the rounds ending after next round starts without making it a DGW for some teams, and then it is clear that what they must do is to give people flexibility with their team selection after round has started and give them large enough squad to tweak the team without making transfers.

That's because you've used to the idea of DGW's, but not to the idea of tweaking the team from a large squad. But the latter serves this game much better.

Briefly, the schedule is no problem, because it would only cause a problem for deadlines and:

      1. There are no transfer deadlines during group stage.

      2. There are no common team selection deadlines, but selection deadlines are related to matches: you can select players (from your squad) playing in a match as long as that match has not yet started.

When the rules were published, I saw many wondering why there are substitutions if it is only for players who have not played yet. This is why there are these substitutions. It basically just makes the team selection deadline flexible. Nothing else.
