With the World Cup on pause for a couple of days, we take time to delve into the domestic data from the 2013/14 season. In the first of a series of features focussing on the KPI statistics in the Members area, we assess the most improved forwards over the season gone by, listing the main players in accordance with goal attempts from inside the box:

For the unfamiliar, these Key Performers Indicator (KPI) tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or change in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain each player’s form, whether it be an improvement or decrease in displays on the pitch. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

For the purpose of this series of articles, we analyse the previous two seasons as a means of comparison:

I heard Arsenal have a personal agreement with Alexis but offer less to FCB than Liverpool. Juve also interested.

being able to swap out players during the open round has proved to be different and exciting. The only problem is you can't make decisions for the day and go off to bed.

What I must say is I have been caught with too many players in the last couple of games forcing me to gamble. Cost me quite a lot actually, applying logic which has no place in football.

I have gone for players in earlier games to make my choices less exasperating. popular choices like Messi, Mascherano, Fernandez and De bruyn I have stuck with in game 3 but only De Vrij and Gonzalez in game 4 when I hope I would have accumulated enough points not to change too much.

Anybody see my logic or is it misfounded?

My argument - If he scores 1, he ends up with about 10-12 points which is about the same return as a much cheaper DM (-1 or 2) and I expect the games to be a lot tighter in this round, the odd goal could come from anywhere really. It's not like the case of Messi who HAS to be involved with every Argentinian goal.

I guess the question is how you would feel of he scores 16 points and you have Lahm that fouls too much, gets a yellow and scores 4 or 5?

Sure Lahm may be safer to score 7-9 pts, but he definitely won't score 15-16.

Which comes down to whether you want to win the game or finish comfortably in the middle?

Hes still the main man at United though as far as the board (and wages) are concerned and i cant see him not playing. Also lets not forget RVP was awful last year (probably down to Moyes granted) but hes also seems to be reverting to getting injured a lot, even in this World Cup hes been subbed early and an injury doubt going in.

Having said all this i will be going RVP its just something to bare in mind.

First draft for Mcdonalds squad Quarter Finals:

    Ospina/Navas

    DVB-Fernandez-Zapta-Varane-De Vrijj-Gonzalez

    James R-Valbuena-Mascherano-KDB

    Neymar-Messi-Robben

Would like opinions and suggestions please. Thinking about dropping neymar for Benzema because I am not convinced of the german back line and I think they could struggle with France's pace upfront, also do you think its a waste having both Ospina and Navas?

Exactly what I did - Neymar for Benzema.

Germany's lack of quality back-line and the fact they haven't played a single strong side so far makes me think the French could tear them apart. Also since Neymar's knee is buggered he has barely trained this week.

Only have 4 midfielders would worry me though. Could be stuck with a couple 4-5 pointers in there.

Yea I usually either play a 4-3-3 or a 5-3-2 because it just seems to me midfielders don't usually score that many points. The CDM's like Mascherano and lahm etc seem to score much better than the Di maria's etc so I prefer to stock the back line since defenders score very well even without a CS.

2 GK is expensive. More even if Cillessen (3) not in the mix. Can´t see any team been shot 20x at like in last round.
A bit weird to have 2x CRC + Robben on last day for me.

Other than that, definitely Benz over Neymar, the rest looks great.
wild guess: Any bank left to up DVB to Vertonghen?

Who would you take then, Ospina or Navas and why? I feel like holland could easily make Navas make anywhere from 6-12 saves, even though they usually play on the counter I just don't see Costa Rica being able to do much against them. If I dropped 1 of the GK's I would probably be able to then upgrade DVB to Vertonghen, you think that might be a good idea since he seems to be getting forward quite a bit in the last few matches?

          Maybe Ospina+Cillessen
So you stay with 2 GK, free up some $$, and still a a GK who can both suffer attacks (I think CRC will have their attemps) and a possible CS.
Just thinking out loud here, not sure if I keep Cillessen alone or with either Cesar, Lloris or Ospina.

Yea I will prob go with Ospina and Cillessen then, since I do have a CRC defender in Gonzalez and upgrade DVB to Vertonghen possibly. I just like DVB because hes been racking up the points and gets forward a lot, against a Argentina team who is extremely suspect defensively on set pieces I like to have him. I would have 2 GK choices for sure just to be safe but that is just my opinion.

Pretty sure I am playing single keeper with Navas.

Best potential for a big score and at this stage, plodding along isn't really an option.

I am playing with the same idea.

Pretty much settled on taking Navas. After seeing Howard's 19 display, it is clear that the big differential is going to come at that position and I can only see that happening with Navas.

Hadn't thought about the double CRC, but it is a good point and if doubling it might be worth doing so with the Dutch (Blind). At this stage, I don't think it is that big a deal to have 3-4 players still to play in the last game, but could make for hard decisions.

I also was playing with DVB for Vertonghen. He was playing like a winger last night, but you can bet his duties will be more defensive minded against Argentina. I also think ADM and co are going to be firing shots from outside the box and we will see more BS so maybe though DVB is the obvious choice he is the right one?

I think I am going to be sticking with DVB over Vertonghen, I just think he will get more BS and Balls Recovered, and has a better chance at scoring on set pieces than Vertonghen.

I worry that Vertonghen will need to be defending against DiMaria or Messi all night and not only will it wear him out, his negative points for fouls/YCs is likely to be an issue.

He just looked so dangerous last night...

German defence is better than Nigerian against whom Benzema did feck all. Get Cillesen and 2x 1m keepers and free up some cash.

Benzema started on the wing against Nigeria, a mistake they won't make again.

Once Giroud got hauled off and Benzema went into the middle it was all France.

This. Benzema looked ineffective in the first half only because Giroud was playing centrally. Once they subbed Giroud off Benzema got a few solid chances and looked a million times more dangerous. France will definitely start with Griezmann on the left and Giroud will be benched. That German back line is incredibly slow, I expect France to get quite a few real good chances against them.

He still got feck all points against a poor Nigerian backline. Germans are more than capable of putting in a good defensive display. Muller's a better option, been there done it, again and again for club and country. Benzema doesn't have the Real attacking unit supplying him with quality.

French back-line is stronger, IMHO, and stronger than anything they have faced so far. The spine on France is very good.

Luckily we only need to wait a couple days to see who is right. I am going France on this one though as I have been very underwhelmed by the German's all tourney.

No German's at all in my fantasy team right now, actually.

    Thought for the day....

Those us us who have started to enjoy the MaccyDs game now, here's my view

The interface is now pretty good, and the transferring between games is fun and suits the more hands on managers "us"
The scoring system keeps you interested for longer since you don't mentally give up when your defenders concede and your players can pick up recovered balls etc

We are all doing pretty well

Finally though, there are 2 to three games a day, the constant playing/fiddling is ideal for us FF bores

FPL would be equally as good if there were so many games, and ALL on free to view TV

For me FPL will be a bit of a let down to start with

Enjoying too, despite so many flaws... Crappy interface, transfer rules, formation problem, mobile UX, and occasional points extremes (Howard at 19, Rakitic over a whole team who scored 3-0 against him...) just to say a few.
Surpringly, McD did a good job at allowing having 20+ players or 11-13 and fillers and just score the same until now.
      Fantasy+WC was a sure bet I guess!
Not really into PL, so UCL & WC official are just good enough for me for now.

UEFA also tried to launch a easy-to-play fantasy game called "Top Five", playable in a minute (UCL only). You may check it out to get your friends who find fantasy too geeky or time-consuming into it.

Varane I think, we would think that Sakho is fit now after resting but we don't know for sure. Varane will start against the Germans. As for points potential, don't know about that really, but I'm thinking France would win against Germans, although might concede.

Kos only plays when Varane is injured or Sakho booked, both of which happens a lot.
Kos did a good substitute job, but remember France qualified vs Ukraina by losing 2-0 (with Kos) then winning 3-0 with Sakho (who scored).

Before the WC started, I was with most in being thoroughly disgusted with the McDonald's game - it's huge teams, tiny budget, heavy management required, poor interface, lack of transfers, too many wild cards, etc.

After playing it for the last couple of weeks, I have to admit I really have enjoyed it. Now fair enough, the interface is shocking and more than a few people have likely killed their chance by an inadvertent chance in formation, but the idea of needing to pick a complete team where there is good balance and scoring at all position has been quite a nice change. It really rewards the players that do their homework and is not a casual game.

That said, I think getting to rebuild you team every round has ruined it for most of us. The templates now emerge and your rank is unlikely to change much in the run in. No reward for the shrewd players that did the research and had the smart picks early.

I am a convert and have enjoyed the game and the team management (including the layout of who sits on the far right) more than I expected.

had not even considered him tbh with JRod and Cuadrado in that team. Gago seems to have a slight attackin threat at 0.5 cheaper.. atleast based on the key passes stat on whoscored. could be a good punt though(however, cuadrado is just a million more)

Of the 38 people above me in Fox, only 10 of them are eligible for the $5000 prize...

I wonder if an ineligible person wins it, the prize gets passed down to the highest finishing eligible person...

    Probably won't though...

I have an Australian permanent resident visa, but have been residing overseas for 7 years.

Anyway, 23 points in FOX is pretty huge gap to close, chance is pretty slim
On the other hand, I am only 18 pts off McD. Will all the subs and weird scoring, I think my chance is bigger

Yeah I already posted about this. They basically tried 2 formations in training:

      a) 4-2-3-1 with Fernandinho holding and Paulinho B2B, Oscar-Hulk-Neymar-Fred up front

      and

      b) 4-3-3 with Henrique just in front of the defenders, Fernandinho + Paulinho in CM and Oscar and Hulk flanking Neymar.

Will be interesting to see which one they choose but wouldn't surprise me if he finally dropped Fred.

The last one was more of a 3/5 at the back rather than a 4-3-3.

        Cesar
        Luiz, Silva, Henrique
        Alves, Fernandinho, Paulinho, Marcelo
        Oscar, Neymar, Hulk.

Yeah could be a 3-5-2 as well, will be interesting to see what Felipao does. I think it'll be a really tight game, probably 1-0 or 1-1.

20+ goals. He fits into Chelsea's philosophy perfectly. He'll score a lot of ugly goals, but who cares. The end result will be the title for Chelsea

I honestly don't think he will do that well, its more to do with the style of play from Chelsea than anything.
If that changes with Fabregas then maybe....

I can't see how he won't do well. He's the perfect system player and he works really hard. Him and Jose are a match made in heaven. I'll be shocked if he doesn't get atleast 20 goals

I still expect some rotation with champions league and Jose's penchant for doing it. He's also fairly injury prone.
I would say more like 15 prem goals for me
