World Cup quarter-final team selections and the tournament’s heroes and villains have hogged the submissions and hot topics generated by the community this week. Back home, the launch of Sky Sports’ Fantasy Game was also discussed, as was the Premier League’s potential hot prospects and weakest links for the season ahead. We recall the key contributions from the community over the past week, whilst also dropping in on the current crop of World Cup tournaments and competitions.

The Community Articles

Preparation for the knockout stages and the weekend’s last eight of the World Cup were the major focus of this week’s submissions. Balotellis Bib was in fine form once again, guiding the community on the key squad selection decisions. He was on hand to look at the major lessons learnt from the group stages and last 16 ties, whilst also provideding this excellent guide to navigating the knockout rounds in the Official FIFA Fantasy game.

Another of our most prolific writers, Daniel Levy 16, also came forward to offer sound advice for those scanning for a bargain in the Official game. His rundown of the best budget goalkeepers and defenders and midfielders provided essential reading as the transfer window swung open.

Each month, we have a £20 Amazon voucher on offer to the author of the best community article as chosen by you. We will launch a Hot Topic to gather your votes and remind you of some of the best of June’s community articles on Monday. The winner will be revealed in next week’s Round-up.

The Hottest Topics

With just the semi finals and finals left to play, many of the World Cup’s heroes and villains have already made themselves known. In answer to Irish Madrista’s call to name the World Cup’s most sensational surprises, DonaldDuckSnr has been impressed with the performances of the Algerian, Costa Rican and Greek outfits, while Siva Mohan was among many to nominate Colombian pair James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado as the tournament’s surprise packages.

Meanwhile, Heydudes13’s hot topic explored the best prospects available at the back in the Official FIFA game, with Holland’s Stefan de Vrij earning special praise. Germany’s last 16 goal hero Andre Schurrle is a favourite of Willis and gained a special mention in our look ahead to the quarter finals clashes.

Elsewhere, Gnu and A SquishyPotato looked at the villainous bunch who have failed to live up to their pre-tournament billing. In Gnu’s assessment of the tournament’s biggest flops, Juan Carlos nominated the entire England team, while Ginkapo placed Spain’s squad at the top of the flop charts. Sheep, meanwhile gave a long list of World Cup 2014 failures, including Wayne Rooney, Leighton Baines and Eden Hazard. ASquishyPotato’s World Cup disappointment XI included Steven Gerrard, as well as Ecuador skipper and United winger, Antonia Valencia.

For DHWizzo the entire Brazil squad have been a let down. In one of the week’s most popular posts, he explained his argument for avoiding their assets in the closing rounds, particularly their suspect defence. For those wanting to find more evidence of World Cup heroics and villainy, Jared Mason’s excellent player statistics for the Official FIFA Fantasy game will prove interesting reading.

The community was also in nostalgic mood this week, taking time out to look back and name some of their favourite ever World Cup goals. Maradona’s second strike against England in the Mexico World Cup of 1986 was the top choice for Aaron Ramessi among others. Meanwhile, our resident quizmaster The Fantasy Freak, looked back fondly at Papa Bouba Diop’s shock winner against France in 2002.

Domestic football issues are creeping into the community’s thoughts and this week saw us assess the field of the new Premier League recruits. Evs and D1sable were among those to predict a successful Premier League return for Chelsea’s new midfielder and former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas. Sherlock Holmes, however, foresee’s a poor debut season for another new Chelsea arrival, Diego Costa.

This week also saw the early launch of the Sky Sports Game, which, this season, includes the addition of a new 3-4-3 formation, along with at testing player price list. Croatia Deserves More Mata and Zepinho were among those to find the player values restrictive. Gigging Order, who topped the Sky component of last season’s Iron Man community tournament, stated that, given the tough pricing, 3-5-2 may well be the formation of choice.

Finally, Irish Madridsta started one of our longest ever discussion threads when he asked for the community’s favourite movie-title and footballer crossovers. There followed an epic multi-page run of some of the most ludicrous movie based puns around, with Applebonkers’ The Quantum of Rod Wallace, Billy Gilmore’s Finding Neymar and Bubz’s 2001 A Space Odemwingie among the many highlights from more than a dozen pages of cinematic word play. The puns flowed at such a rate that The Fantasy Freak even had to abandon his regular pre-match quiz.

The Community Tournaments

Following the quarter final matches an impressive 22 of our Fox league members are in the top 50 of the overall rankings. With 425 points our league leader, Alba Esque, is third overall. Arvin United leads the Fox FFS Deadzone league, while Roscola continues to dominate the Fox moderators and contributors league.

Ceac90 tops the Scout League in the McDonald’s backed Official World Cup game: he also sits fifth in the overall ranks, just five points off the summit.

Do we think there's actually logic to these Sanchez to Arsenal rumours? Not going to lie, he'd be straight into my FPL squad but I think he's such an unnecessary signing for Wenger to fork out £32 million for. He has a big enough supply of midfielders out wide, and whilst he is certainly an upgrade, the likes of Walcott, Ox, Cazorla etc will have their game time impacted.

Unless he plans to play him up front, but he'd be pretty wasted without having 1 on 1s.

his chance creation/key passing stats are superb. sanchez/walcott will hit double figures easily with him up top to bounce off. giroud will get close to 20 again

when you consider many want podolski to play up front ahead of giroud you can see why wenger persists with donkey

seems like sanchez could also play up top with walcott if giroud is dropped

Hmmm, his passing is horrendous. I'd nearly think Pod could match him if playing as frequently and actually adjusting to that role. Hope they sign Remy.

podolski's aerial dual stats are poor compared to giroud. the ball sticks with giroud when it goes up there but he has defenders harrying him so making a pass is hard. if podolski was in the CF position he wouldn't win as many balls, the ball wouldn't stick and if it did he would then have to make the pass so I would expect his stats to decrease for passing too

I dunno, passing is just quite poor. Not saying Pod really is an improvement but I think they can get someone better. As I said before though, depends on what they want to achieve.

I've watched him a lot. I'm not going to say he's a donkey or any of that stupid stuff and fair enough Pod wouldn't bring anything better at all but I do not think he's good enough for Arsenal if Arsenal are the title contenders they aspire to be.

We were title front runners with Giroud up front before Ramsey and Walcott got injured. It is a downside him being codependent, but with the players around him he is good enough IMO. Time will tell! 😉 😆

                        It will indeed 😉

Kinda my point though, a true great would dig deep when injuries strike to keep the team going, he couldn't do that. It goes both ways, with those players around him + being absolutely nailed on, I think an Arsenal striker in that position should be contesting for Golden Boot.

Somalion, you ain't taking into account the fact that at the time of those injuries Giroud also started to get tired. He played more minutes and ran more than any other forward in PL last season.

And his role is not so much to finish the moves, but to build them. The way he plays gets chances to other players. He's not so easily going to win the golden boot that way, and that's not the idea either. On both sides of him, Sanchez and Walcott would battle for that golden boot. 😉

See I'd absolutely agree with you, it's an important role certainly and he does it fine. However I've seen his stats, 88 shots (so clearly he's taking shots on goal) which was more than Sturridge, 3 fewer than Bony etc. So his shooting was comparable to other strikers who were supposed to score goals.

All he needs is someone schooling him in how to score the easy chances in a statistically efficient way instead of always trying some fancy finishes that only work 1/10 of time and are not needed when GK is already almost out of the situation. That move to Bayern would have done wonders to him.

Btw, he also did score 16 goals, same as Bony, and 16/88 gives him conversion rate of 18%, which is actually just fine. Not amazing, but fine.

As a Arsenal fan, Giroud is good enough to be a squad player but not to start week in week out if we are serious about challenging for the title. Also kills me that Wenger turned down Cesc because we have too many midfielders that play in that position yet we can keep dead weights like Diaby and Arteta. Yea, because we are going to go the entire season without Ozil, Ramsey, or Wilshere getting injured somewhere a long the way...... So irritating..

Wenger can, and does, talk himself out of signings with logic too often. Other top sides see a quality player and get them, worrying about how they'll fit them in later. He should just get him. They easily play enough games over the course of the season to use everyone.

Not necessarily though, apart from Mourinho at Chelsea who clearly wants more world class midfielders in his squad than we could possibly imagine. I just think it'll be a big name signing for the sake of it (if theres any truth to it), and come the start of the season people will be questioning why no centre forward once again...

Giroud will be the main CF this year. Whoever is signed will occasionally spell him so he does not have to put in as many minutes but mostly play WITH Giroud. Whether fans like it or not, Giroud provides too much of what Wenger wants from his position to become a squad player. The new attacker will come in to play off Giroud, take advantage of his hold up play, run into the spaces he creates. He'll be a complement to Giroud not a replacement.

If you want to improve then play with less players e.g. 5 a side or 7 a side. This way you will get more of the ball and your influence on the game will be greater. In 11 a side you will hardly see the ball and not really improve your skills

Flanagan & Johnson are tripe, José Enrique is not so good either.

May be a silly comment, but I think it has logic.

Does Suárez's (likely) departure increase the prospects of the Liverpool defence?

Liverpool defenders are likely to be priced down after an underwhelming season last time out, and Suarez's departure should mean Liverpool need to tighten up defensively, with less goals going in up top, right?
Check out Liverpool's performances during Suarez's ban at the beginning of the season, frequently picking up 1-0 wins, with Sturridge scoring early on and Liverpool shutting up shop for the rest of the game. Likely to be the same next season, to a certain extent?

Suppose it depends on who is in the defence

Maybe, but lots of attacking players to fit n AND disruption of new players coming in may make it nlikely?

Good job fifa put on this World Cup thing to give us something to talk about in off season.

Whilst it is slow in here , what kind of tourney would you put on to fill the years in between World Cup and euro champs.
Something like a north equator championship or a sovereign ruled tourney

The Copa América is on next year, kick-off times should be similar as it;s being held in Chile.
