Holland clinch third place in the 2014 World Cup after a comfortable 3-0 win over hosts Brazil. Robin Van Persie nets his fourth goal of the tournament, whilst Daley Blind and Georginio Wijnaldum also find the net in Louis Van Gaal’s final match in charge:

Van Persie Back in the Goals
Despite a series of poor displays over the knockout stages, the United striker kept his role in the starting XI last night. Louis Van Gaal made just two changes to his line-up, bringing in Jordy Clasie and Jonathan de Guzman for Wesley Sneijder and Nigel de Jong in the centre of the park, with Georginio Wijnaldum tucking in behind Van Persie and Arjen Robben up top.

Having failed to net since Matchday 2, the United man quickly rediscovered his scoring touch against the beleaguered hosts. An early foul on Arjen Robben allowed Van Persie the chance to fire home an excellent spot-kick and take his tally to four for the tournament – level with Lionel Messi and Neymar and eclipsing Robben’s total of three for the Dutch. Elsewhere amongst the attackers, Sneijder’s absence proved beneficial to Wijnaldum. Previously utilised as part of the central midfield four, a move to a more advanced role allowed the PSV man to grab his first goal of the campaign in the latter stages of the match and afford us a decent differential for last night’s encounter.

Blind Delivers Again
Handed a role on the left of the midfield four, the versatile Ajax man served up the points at both ends of the pitch last night to justify our Fantasy faith. Blind’s first-half strike took his attacking returns to a goal and three assists over seven appearances, whilst his 70th-minute withdrawal still afforded owners a fourth clean sheet of the campaign – last night’s result means Holland conceded just a single goal in their final five fixtures of Van Gaal’s tenure, providing Fantasy managers with points aplenty over the tournament.

Brazil End With a Whimper
Thiago Silva’s return from suspension made little difference as the demoralised hosts were taken apart again. Phil Scolari made six changes from the side that were beaten 7-1 by Germany but the Brazil defence once again let down its Fantasy owners – the 3-0 win means they managed a single clean sheet over seven matches and conceded an incredible 14 goals. The likes of Willian, Ramires and Jo were handed starts further up the pitch but made little impact and, since losing Neymar to injury, Brazil have managed a single goal in two matches in a dire end to the tournament.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Stefan de Vrij was top performer for recovered balls amongst the Dutch with an impressive 13, followed by Jordy Clasie (five) and Daley Blind (four). For Brazil, the back-four were the main men – Thiago Silva managed six, with David Luiz on five and Maxwell and Maicon next in line on three apiece.

Yeah I agree, it was meant to be a tongue in cheek comment. When you read his how to guides you know how well he really knows his stuff.

I reckon he got caught chasing his losses last year and with no experience of being in that position he didn't do it that we'll.

The funny thing is I reckon he will be an even better player for the experience of last season.

New number 1 rule for me : Always pick a starter! Lessons learnt this WC Fantasy season. Got lucky with Schurle, but always pick a starter. Make sure you have at least 11 of em in your team.

And above link for the rest 😀 Very useful guide by mark.

Haha no I just have faith in pochetino to get them sorted out.

If ade gets as many chances as jrod last year and pochetino can keep him motivated then he could be epic again and loris will be very close if pochetino can get the defence in front of him sorted. If he can make fonte and lovren look like top class cb's then imagine what he can do with the spurs defence

  4. Fixture Rotation Analysis
    Jimjam

    Morning all,

Just got bought my season membership and had a play with the interactive ticker. I thought I'd share some rotation analysis I just threw together.

I noticed a lot of rotation analysis revolves around home/away - I thought I'd look purely at difficult fixtures, i.e. when one team has a bad fixture, who has a corresponding good fixture?

    METHODOLOGY

Very crude. I took the season ticker for the first 10 gameweeks of the season, and set it to 'Clean Sheets' to look at defensive fixture difficulty.

I assigned a numerical grade to each fixture, from 1-5. So, on the season ticker, a dark blue/very easy fixture is 1; a light blue/easy fixture is 2; a grey/neutral fixture is 3; a light red/difficult fixture is 4, and a dark red/very difficult fixture is 5.

For each team, for every fixture ranked 3 or higher, I looked for teams with a corresponding fixture ranked 1 or 2. I then tallied which other teams rotated best with that particular team.

At some point I will cross-refer this with home/away rotation, but have not yet done so.

    All feedback welcome!

    RESULTS

I prefer this method. I've only had a quick look myself but I also noticed that Everton and Swansea rotate very well in terms of fixture difficulty (perfectly I'd say), but this isn't picked up on with home/away rotation.

Looks like you've uncovered a few more gems here. Good work!

How many games out of the total number of bad/neutral games that team rotates for.

So for example, Arsenal have 4 bad/neutral games in the first 10. Crystal Palace and Stoke rotate for all 4, hence the (4).

    Mr. Inconsistent - Edin Hazard

    Points per GW: 3 5 3 1 3 2 8 1̲8 2 2 1̲3 1̲0 2 1̲7 2 5 3 1̲0 1̲0 6 8 2 3 3 2̲1 2 3 1̲0 9 2 8 2 1 0 0 0 1 2

    .
8 double figure hauls helped him break the 200pt mark. Outside the double figure hauls he's scored quite poorly. A risky captain.

There was an FFS article 2-3 years ago that analysed the benefits of picking consistent point scorers over explosive ones. Given this, his likely inflated price tag, and the strength of midfield alternatives available, are you going to be starting FPL 14/15 with Mr. Hazard?

Good point, I'm not sure. There are some 8s/9s in there too but still that's only 12/38 decent scores, one in three. Will depend whether Yaya stays, Ramsey's preseason form etc. If there's room at the inn I'll pick him.

A few possible changes to the scoring system in FPL (although I don't really expect many, if any, of them to happen this season). These are slightly different from the ones I suggested yesterday.

    1. Only 6 bonus points per match. If two or more players tie for 3, 2 or 1 bonus points then separate them by using other statistics as differentiators.

    2. Goalkeepers to get 5 points for a clean sheet. This would benefit goalkeepers from teams with strong defences who don't get the chance to make so many saves as goalkeepers playing behind weaker defences.

    3. 1 point awarded for every 5 recovered balls or blocks. This would compensate defenders for points lost due to the reduction in their bonus points, and would also give some reward to defensive midfielders, but without distorting everything as in McD's.

    4. 1 point awarded for every 2 big scoring chances created that do not count as assists (including winning unconverted penalties). This should help creative midfielders.

    5. Shots that hit the woodwork NOT to count as misses and therefore score negative BPS.

However, as TW remarked yesterday, FPL ain't very broke, so there is no great urgency to fix it!

Why give more points to defensive mids? By their very nature they aren't good footballers. They are there to stop the better players.
If you buy one he will be cheap, and if you can buy one that scores points you will have an advantage on other fantasy managers.

Some of them are good footballers, such as Mascherano at the World Cup. And Jedinak probably deserved a few more points than he got last season.

Defenders and goalkeepers are also there to stop attacking players.

*NEW AND UPDATED INCLUDING ALEXIS SANCHEZ*

I did this last summer and it went down well so I'm doing it again. It's an analysis of the points per game of the new players in the Premier League. It is for their old clubs and leagues so it has limitations but it is still helpful for you hopefully. More info is on the first sheet. I will be updating it regularly and posting the new link as more players arrive.

    Check it out here:

'Of all time' = 'from 1992 onwards'

I love the assumption behind these statistics that no English top-flight football existed pre-1992, whereas the Premier League is just the continuation of the same competition with a much more unequal distribution of finances to lower-league clubs.

The Premier League was founded 20 February 1992. I wasn't deliberately being unrepresentative.

It's more useful to look at recent assisters.

No, I wasn't getting at you at all. I just find it amusing that the Premier League marketing team churn out an endless swathe of statistics which imply that time started in 1992 - 'best striker in Premier League history' etc.

It's the same English top division as pre-1992, but with added neo-liberal greed and self-aggrandizing quasi-Scientology PR.

You've got that 2nd place tussle with Jonty to win though! 🙂

Yeah. I'm absolutely gutted. Top 5 throughout the season, even held 1st for a tiny bit 😆 and then drop out to 15 in the final round. Horrendous. Made some really stupid decisions at 5am in the morning before the game. Well, I only have myself to blame and there's nothign I can do about it now. Hopefully, I can work my way back up to the top of the FFS league and break into the top 5/10 with some luck!

Good luck with that H2H final! Who's it against?

LVG has never been a manager with solid defences, I think he just cut his cloth accordingly for this tournament - I'm not excited about the Man Utd defence personally.

I'm expecting good stuff from P.Jones and L.Shaw...DDG will only improve this year..but United look mores attractive Attacking wise...and I wasn't saying only for LVG..I meant in general which ever we say will perform weakest in defence like Liverpool..they may perform well

Wasn't there a graphic shown on Sky Sports the other day when Nasri re-signed showing a list of the top players in the number of chances created?

I recall it because I remember seeing Sissoko's name right up there too which was surprising. Then again considering he was passing the ball to Papiss Cisse, Shola Ameobi and Siem De Jong it's no wonder he went unnoticed as his teammates so rarely converted those chances!

Anyone remember who the other under the radar players on that list were?

In FPL I'm seriously considering a £4.5m midfielder and a non playing £4.0 goalie to make up the cash. Once you've got RVP, Studge, Hazard and Ramsey in your team (for example) you're left with buttons.

Anyone else considering starting with a couple of potential non playing cheapies?

You will be able to get someone who at least plays for 4.5 in mid. Might get a playing GK for 4.0 if we are very lucky. I went with Boruc / Davis last season, so that is one strategy.

And the fact that the Boruc/Davis combo boxed some of us in that had Jrod up front, when Lallana was going ballistic points wise,
Not forgetting going Williams over Jedinak, getting silva over Yaya, ignoring Ramsey-the "flash in the pan" and getting Parr when Ward was beginning his legend status.

              Rotating 3 x 4.5s say is the equivalent of 2 x 4s and 1 x 5.5 where solid options always present themselves.

phew. I remember Roscola emphasising the importance of a 5m Brady equivalent (more than valid) but I'd rather spend that precious .5 on the 11.

Failure is a greater teacher than success and I think the most important thing in FPL is flexibility and cash tied on your bench hinders that somewhat.

      Boruc Davis
      Jedinak Ward Chester

is the equivalent of what I'll be looking for this season. Ideally, the next Barkley can reveal itself but not before it is too late...

No i think you have the standard method of squad selection tbf it is probably me that is clouded by my second half of last season when i stayed away from big mids and rotated medium to cheap mids around one big mid (two the odd time). I also carried a fair cash balance in the bank for the second half of the season due to this strategy.

This worked a treat as the mids didn't seem to be providing great value but I'm not sure if it is a valid strategy from the start due to tighter budgets etc.

I may well start with a skeleton (but playing) bench. However, as cash, injuries/suspensions and info/patterns begin to stack up then a switch to using all 8 attackers seems sound enough.

I was given some good tips for writing my first article (on Burnley) other day... I will be writing it tonight...

My main bulk of what I'll be writing about will be: Players signed, opinion in said players, our formation/s, key players, prediction for the season

Is this enough? In only thinking from point of view that all you/us guys wabt is FPL potential.... What I expect....

    Cheers

Biggest thing with Burnley for me will be their defensive potential.

By the sounds of things they were very direct in championship last season with low possession stats so this will likely either mean they are equipped to defend for long periods without the ball or they will be punished more for not holding it in the epl. I fear the latter may be the result
