The waiting is finally over. Just three days after the World Cup came to a conclusion on Sunday evening, our thoughts immediately focus on domestic matters after Fantasy Premier League (FPL) opened its doors once again this afternoon:

This morning’s release of the Player Price List heightened our anticipation – only three midfielders and four forwards are priced above the 10.0 barrier, with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez the subject of much interest after he was classified as a midfielder for the season ahead.

There are changes to how the Bonus Point System (BPS) is calculated, too. Essentially, every previous statistic which factored towards a player’s BPS score is now multiplied by three – a forward earns 24 points towards his BPS score, for example, instead of eight in 2013/14, whilst a shot off target takes a single point from a player’s BPS score; previously, the system only deducted a point for every three wayward efforts.

A new factor introduced to the BPS is the decision to reward players for successful dribbles. Full-backs and wide men who are willing to take on opponents are now smiled upon favourably here – they earn a single point towards their BPS total, the same as providing a key pass. These new tweaks should hopefully prevent situations where, as we saw many times last term, numerous players picked up bonus points in the same match.

Fantasy managers now have the chance to assemble our 15-man squads with just a month until the campaign gets underway on Saturday August 16, where the early lunchtime kick-off sees United and Swansea go head-to-head in Louis Van Gaal’s first official match in charge.

As always, we’ll be rolling out a series of articles on the Player Price List over the coming days, breaking them down by position.

For now, this is just a heads-up. Enjoy tinkering, everyone!

As in the captain you chose for Sunday should ideally play again next Saturday so you can use your swap to move it to a Sunday player who then again plays on Sat.......

Update on the new BPS system. I've submitted it as an article, but thought people might want a look now too:

As some of you may have noticed, FPL is now open again. And with a new season comes changes to the rules, and in particular the annual change to the bonus system.

The latest system still uses the BPS system, but the magnitude of the values has altered. To cut to the chase, pretty much everything has multiplied by 3, so where-as a goal for a striker used to be worth 8 BPS, its now worth 24 BPS. The main difference is that where BPS were awarded or deducted for, example, every 3 open play crosses, players now receive 1 BPS per open play cross. Open play crosses are therefore still rewarded in the same proportion as they were previously (taking the 3x multiplier into account). There are also a few stats where it has changed from requiring a different number of events.

    To summarise:

Actions that will now be better rewarded are:

    · Making a save

    · Open play cross

    · Creating a big chance (a chance where the receiving player should score)

    · For every 3 clearances, blocks and interceptions (total) –SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT

    · For every 3 recoveries –SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT

    · Key pass

    · Successful tackle (net*)

    · Successful dribble– MAJOR IMPROVEMENT

Actions that are now more severely punished are:

    · Being tackled

    · Being caught offside

    · Shot off target

Actions that probably fall somewhere between the two are:

    · Making an error which leads to an attempt at goal

    · Conceding a foul

    So what are the implications?

    · In general, everything is rewarded in much the same proportions as before

    · However, as items are now rewarded per individual incidence, they will increase in significance. The player who makes 2 open play crosses now receives 2BPS (equivalent to 2/3 of an old BPS), whereas before he would get nothing.

    · Defenders and midfielders are now likely to pick up more BPS from their positive actions that may previously not have been recognised

    · Conversely, it is now easier for attacking players to loose points for shots off target, offsides or being tackled. Not so good for strikers and wingers.

    · Errors leading to attempts on goal and conceding fouls have gone from requiring 2 incidents in order to lose 1 old BPS to loosing 1/3 old BPS per incident. These are therefore punished less severely than other forms of loosing BPS

    · Clearances, blocks and interceptions (total), and (separately) Recoveries, are now rewarded for every 3 incidents, rather than for every 8. This means that they are now worth 1/9 of an old BPS, as opposed to 1/8, but are likely to be rewarded far more often. Probably still a positive change.

    · Successful dribbles now earn 1 BPS (not previously recognised). This will help strikers and wingers.

    · A more sensitive bonus system will drastically reduce the number of multiple bonus allocations in low scoring games

    · Hallelujah

    · However, this is likely to negatively impact on defenders who might previously have benefitted from multiple allocations across the defence

Some of you may already have read my (award winning :D) article on Baseline BPS. I suspect that the changes to the system will not radically alter who is likely to pick up the boni. Linked below:

      Nice summary, good work.

Please can you explain your last bullet point, re "multiple allocations" - I didn't understand that one.

Also, any plans to work out how players' BPs would have differed last season if this new system had applied? Or maybe just using a few examples, e.g Cahill, Koscielny vs Baines, Debuchy, etc.

      Thanks 🙂

Good lord MJ, give me chance! 😉 it would have to be done on a player by player basis, and I just don't think I care that much!

By multiple allocations,I mean say 4 defenders all getting 2 bonus points.

That's why I thought a sample of a few players would be good. A couple of CBs vs a couple of FBs. That would give a good idea on the CBs vs FBs debate, that could be extrapolated.

    Well...

I thought I would break up the RMT's to post this spreadsheet. I did the same sheet last year and although simple may help you find the best value players.

It compares last years points total compared to the player price to give you the best points per £M spent in each position sortable by Club, Player, Price & Points per £M spent. Link below

    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bz4LcHY0obgXeHpvS1dOb0d5WkE/edit?pli=1

For the second year running Rickie Lambert is the best value forward coming in at 24 points per million spent a full 2 points clear of Oliver Giroud.

In Midfield a surprise in the form of Steve Sidwell running at 23 points level with Gerrard & Noble.

In defense Jose Fonte racked up the points and comes in this year as the best value defender who is running at an impressive 27 points, 1 ahead of nearest rivals Terry, Mertesacker and Coleman.

Finally, between the sticks Mannone is this years best value Goalkeeper coming in at 30 points per million spent.

I do hope this spreadsheet helps you root out the value amongst perhaps more obvious choices.

no because this is irrespective of price. i.e for every £M you spend, it just give you the points per million spent, so although Hazard was a points magnet last year. His price this year means he is only delivering 20 points for every million you spend on him

You lost me, I mean that if the price is higher but the points stay the same then last years points per £m are irrelevant? Anyway, everyone else seems to disagree so we'll leave it at that 🙂

You have a point WR, basing it on last year's prices means that a player who was good value could actually be very bad value this year if his price rose drastically. I think Sterling will be a fine example of someone with excellent value based on last year, and those points per £m drop dramatically on this year's price.

But its still worth a look and has some value in identifying last year's good performers. not irrelevant.

        ......

That is not the issue. This is last years points against this years costs. So your point is irrelevant.

The reall problem is spotting which players are going to perform better/worse than they did this year as we ideally want this years points against this years cost.

Good this, but if you bring in playingtime also, it will give a clearer picture of it

Ex Mannone is best value, and Adrian is quite far down because of playingtime, but the westham keepers combined for the whole season is by far the one with most points last year

Not enough for Vert, am considering Debuchy over Fonte

To get Vert I'd have to replace Dann with a 4.5 or find a 4.0.

He's definitely expensive. If he hits the ground running, however, he's probably worth the money. In an attacking team like that...........Yes, I think I'll take me some of that. Might monitor over the first two gameweeks and then pick him up. Or maybe right off the bat. Gonna watch how he does in the preseason and what not.

i'd actually prefer sanchez to be a forward, i was only going to go with two up front, and this means having two and maybe 3 arsenal mids in my team (when walcott returns). While i have a lot of options for midfield whereas up front i don't (not going with rvp or aguero - just sturridge and it would have been with sanchez) Plus this also means everyone will have him, whereas if he was a forward people would be split.
