Ronald Koeman moved into the transfer for the second time last week by acquiring striker Graziano Pelle from former club Feyenoord on a three-year contract. The 28-year-old teams up with the Dutchman for the third time in his career, having also worked under his guidance at AZ Alkmaar, and his arrival hands the Saints a very prolific replacement for the departed Rickie Lambert:

Discussing his move with the club’s official site, Pelle admitted he didn’t need persuading to join the Koeman revolution for the season ahead:

“I had some teams interested in me, but this is going to be the best choice for me because the club wants to keep improving every year. The talks between us were only short in terms of how long it took to convince each other. I was pretty sure that, for me, this would be a great step. [Ronald] Koeman and I worked together for two amazing years at Feyenoord, and I hope that it will be the same here.”

The History

A product of the Lecce youth system, the Italian made his debut in back in January 2004. Pelle was unable to make any impact, though, and managed just 12 goalless appearances over three years at the club – loaned out to lower league Catania on three occasions over that period, he notched 16 times in 69 appearances.

In July 2007, Pelle left his native country to sign for Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar. Spending four years in the Eredivisie, he struggled to make any real impact and netted only 14 times in 78 league outings before moving back to Italy with Parma. His toils continued, with a single goal in 12 appearances prompting loan stints at Sampdoria (four goals in 16 league games) and a first year under Koeman at Feyenoord, where he served up an excellent 29 goals and nine assists in 33 matches over 2012/13.

Midway through that loan spell with Feyenoord, Pelle signed a four-year deal with the Dutch outfit and officially joined on a permanent deal in the summer of 2013. Once again, he served up the goals for Koeman’s side, with 26 goals and six assists in 33 appearances across all competitions – indeed, over his two years with Feyenoord, an average of 0.88 goals per game was third around Europe, with only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo more prolific.

The Prospects

Earlier in the summer, the doubters were circling after Southampton lost their former manager and three key players but Koeman’s knowledge of the Dutch top-flight has quickly pacified Saints fans and Fantasy managers alike.

The acquisition of playmaker Dusan Tadic (16 goals and 14 assists last season) in addition to Pelle certainly suggests that Koeman has added real quality to the squad and more than atoned for the departure of Lallana and Lambert. Discussing his new forward with the club’s official website, the Dutchman summed up Pelle’s best qualities:

“I had Graziano in my team for my last two years at Feyenoord. He scored a lot of goals – more than 50 in two seasons – and they brought a lot of points to the club. Goals mean points, and we needed a good player in that position after Rickie Lambert left. In terms of his qualities, he’s a tall striker with a lot of movement and he’s fast. He’s a player who gives confidence to the team because he keeps the ball, and he’s very dangerous in front of goal. He’s almost 29 years old, so he brings a little bit of experience to a young team.”

Although the rebuilding is coming along nicely, the Saints new boys may need time to acclimatise to their new environment. Luckily, the transition has been made easier by a superb opening schedule which many may find hard to resist as we start to assemble our squads for the season ahead. Koeman’s side face just two of last term’s top eight in their opening 12 fixtures, with their first six home games seeing West Brom, Newcastle, QPR, Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester all make their way to St Mary’s.

Coming in at just 7.5 in FPL and 7.4 in the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game, Pelle has been reasonably priced for the campaign ahead. An eighth place finish last time around under Mauricio Pochettino – albeit impressive – ensures the club have no European fixtures to contend with, making rotation unnecessary and first-team starts assured. Furthermore, Lambert’s departure should ensure the Italian is handed spot-kicks and if he can even come close to replicating his previous displays under Koeman, that opening run of matches has the potential to richly reward those willing to invest.

Wenger - Theo is progressing very well

Arsène Wenger has given the latest update on Theo Walcott's recovery from the cruciate knee ligament injury he sustained in January.

    on Theo Walcott…
He's progressing very well. He's worked very hard during the summer and we expect him to be back in full training at the end of August.

on how long it will take for Walcott to get back in the team…
That's difficult to predict. Once he's back in full training it can be very quick. He has a good basis, which is what he's working on now.

Not starting with Sanchez though. Even if he does well, its easy to just get Theo a few games later while everyone sticks with Sanchez, a bit like Sturridge/Suarez last season

Calf injury rules Anderson out of Tour 2014

Anderson sustained a calf injury during pre-season training and has subsequently not joined Louis van Gaal’s travelling squad for this summer’s Tour 2014, presented by Aon.
The Manchester United midfielder will remain at the Aon Training Complex where he will continue his rehabilitation ahead of the 2014/15 season, which kicks off on Saturday 16 August when the Reds face Swansea City at Old Trafford.

Brazilian international Anderson joined United in 2007 and has since made 179 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals. He most recently spent the second half of the 13/14 campaign on loan at Serie A side Fiorentina.

It might be easier. Gives any manager a convenient reason not to pick him. I had such high hopes for Ando. I'm sad it never worked out

Aside from his CL final shootout pen and his owning of Fabregas my abiding memory of Ando is the way he used to stand behind the wall when we had a free kick and pull faces at the keeper to distract him. 😆

yup, though I can't help feel we used him wrong

That free kick thing is not something most people would ever notice. I just happen to have a seat quite low down behind the goal (but high enough to see the other end) I just looked up once and saw him doing it, then I noticed he always did it. Would likely never show up on TV or at the sides/further up

Rooney's goal tally for the last five seasons is up and down like a yo-yo: 26, 11, 27, 12, 17

Using a non-existent algorithm, it is absolutely certain that he will score 11 goals this season. I now consider the matter closed.

Actually, that the up score of last season was 38% down from his previous good season score, suggests that his development is going down in general. Multiplying his low season score by 0.62, he gets 7-8 goals next season.

Who else has made a draft with Giroud as their only Arsenal attacker? the cheapest of the lot and there are not many options upfront as it is. Choosing between ozil, ramsey, Sanchez and soon wally seems impossible. Giroud gives that little breathing space to see how each perform before deciding. He should start upfront with wally out(with sanchez on the wing) too

I currently have RVP, Dzeko, Giroud.

Don't read too much into it, my team will be mostly shaped by pre-season.

Player power is stronger than ever, they hold clubs to ransom.

City don't seem to care about FIFA fair play sanctions and the fines imposed on them so I doubt they will lay down the law on their most valuable player.

Looks likely that Leicester are signing Ulloa - http://www.hinckleytimes.net/sport/football/football-news/leicester-citys-leonardo-ulloa-transfer-7450679

Anyone know much about him? Looks like he'd be their main man right?

Yeah i know quite a bit about him.
He's been pretty good for Brighton, but despite a decent scoring record he misses a hell of a lot of chances. I don't think he's worth 7 million and I don't think he's going to shine in the PL.
      Good business for Brighton IMO!

Don't bust their dream of Lolarov starting.

Btw, Nasty or Demi should be the starter first. Defenders seldom walk straight to the starting lineup in new leagues, especially in big clubs.

True we laugh about it now but back then it seems like a bargain.
Young star in Serie A and La Liga's most consistent striker.

I don't feel any excitement with Liverpool's current signing.
Lambert is old, Lallana is okay but way overpriced,
Markovic honestly never heard of him, and Emre is okay since he's young but Paulinho seems better

        Lambert better than Soldado
Lallana and Eriksen is a tough one, possibly a tie.
Markovic vs Lamela, both really unknown in England, once again a tie I feel.
Paulinho is currently better than Can although how Can will do in PL once more is unknown.

Mixed bag really, probably hinges on how Lamela, Markovic and Can perform.

Eriksen shits all over Lallana. Lallana has one good season and everyone gets excited.
+ Eriksen is still only 22 whilst Lallana is 26.

Lamela is better then Markovic at the moment as he proved with his goals in Serie A.
I like Markovic though and he is only 20, similar with Can they both have potential to be future stars.

Well steady on now. Eriksen is good, and yes he's younger but going on current PL ability I don't think Eriksen is better. Not to say he won't be if the team gets itself together properly, same goes for Lamela who I believe to be better than Markovic as well but how either will adjust to PL (lets face it, Lamela barely got a chance to adjust) is an entirely different story.

Put it this way, look out how well Eriksen did last season in his FIRST season considering the fact that he wasn't even in his BEST position.
              (LM & NOT CAM).

Yea I agree on Lamela, the way he was managed last season was a joke. Thankfully everything has been good going into this season.

Lambert is better than Loldado, and has experience in PL, and was waaaay cheaper. That alone makes it look better for Liverpool.

But with the rest of it, you may actually be right. Spurs did buy some players with unquestionable merits. Just that they screwed everything up, and one of their better buys got injured in his 2nd match, doesn't mean those players are bad. Lamela is still a very promising player, no matter what happened last season.

    c) Weimann
    d) Soldado (lol jks)

Arsenal XI: Szczesny; Debuchy, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs; Ramsey, Wilshere; Sanchez, Ozil, Cazorla; Giroud.

Chelsea XI: Courtois; Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Cahill, Filipe Luis; Matic, Oscar, Fabregas; Willian, Costa, Hazard.

Manchester City XI: Hart; Zabaleta, Mangala, Kompany, Kolarov; Fernando, Fernandinho; Silva, Y Toure, Navas; Dzeko.

Manchester United XI: de Gea; Valencia, Hummels, J Evans, Jones, Shaw; Vidal, Herrera; Rooney, Mata, van Persie.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet; Flannagan, Sakho, Lovren, Jose Enrique; Gerrard, Henderson; Sterling, Coutinho, Lallana; Sturridge.

Yeah, maybe so. Aguero ahead of Dzeko, then. Or maybe they may be back to 4-4-2 again?

Arsenal - Fair enough, not entirely sure on Wilshere if Khedira comes.
      Chelsea - No Terry 😮
City - Is Aguero Injured? Sagna?
United- Valencia?.. As if Hummels 😀 5 at the back is fair enough, LVG loves it.
      Liverpool - Seems Fair.

Yeah, but think Khedira transfer has stalled completely, could be Schneiderlin or someone else to come, but I won't hold my breath.

I 100% agree with the Arsenal XI. I'm hoping Nasri will start for City though! Don't think Fernandinho and Fernando will start together.

Yes, Cazorla over Ox. Not even sure Ox is completely fit, or will be before the start of the season.

      Terry ahead of Ivanovic.
      Nasri ahead of Navas.
      Phil Jones instead of Hummels.

I think Oscar will be on his way out tbh, see a midfield of Ramires Matic Cesc.

      Wilshere won't start

Nasri over Navas for sure, probably Jovetic or Negredo over one of the mids.

United won't play 5 at the back, that only happened with Netherlands because of injuries, any suggestion of this is pretty much nonsense

      Markovic will start

        Ramires is suspended for GW1.

Wilshere is our second best midfielder. If Khedira/Schneiderlin comes, that's different, but I won't hold my breath.

I respect rest of your suggestions.

          Ah ok.

Pretty sure Arteta or Flamini will start even though they aren't as good, Wenger loves that false-defensive-mid-who-can't-actually-defend-but-looks-like-he-is

      No Arteta?

      No Terry or Ramires?

      No Aguero or Nasri?

      Hummels and Vidal 😀 ...optimistic!

I think you're the one humouring us 😉

Arteta. Only an Arsenal fan would know how horrible he has been for us this season.

I think United MIGHT pull those signings off.

And to Terry and Aguero ... it is more of a fitness issue.

These are not badly thought out, but

      1. City lineup must be close to 100% wrong. will never ever start the first match away from home with Zaba, Kolarov, and a new young CB in lineup. At least two of those, and most probably all of them, will be out. Nasri will indubitably start, so will Aguero if he is even 90% fit, and he should be. Fernando? No. It will look like this: Hart, Sagna, Demi, Kompany, Clichy, Fernandinho, YaYa, Nasri, Silva, Aguero, Dzeko.

      2. Why does Liverpool sign all these players if they don't intend to use them? Drop Coutinho, introduce Markovic, and it's more like it.

      3. ManU has to still buy Hummels and Vidal before they can play them.

      4. I don't think Wenger is enticed to play Wilshere and Ramsey as low midfield duo ever again.
