Alan Pardew continued his summer rebuilding programme at St James Park with the acquisition of France international Rémy Cabella from HSC Montpellier for a fee reported to be between £7-11 million. He now joins a host of new faces on Tyneside as the club look to restore the foundations of their squad following the departure of key players that have included Yohan Cabaye, Mathieu Debuchy and Loic Remy.

Touted as a “marquee signing” by his new manager, Cabella was quick to pledge his commitment to the Newcastle faithful:

“This is a move that I really wanted to make, as I have heard nothing but good things about Newcastle United from everyone I spoke to…I wanted to join a great English club and that is why I have arrived here. I’m looking forward to pulling on the shirt and playing in this magnificent stadium, and I will give this Club my maximum.”

THE HISTORY

Cabella spent four years as a junior at local club Gazélec Ajaccio before moving to Montpellier’s youth academy at the age of 14. After a year on the sidelines with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, the midfielder made his mark on the domestic scene in 2010/11, when he notched three goals in 17 appearances on loan at AC Arles-Avignon.

Back at his parent club the following season, Cabella became a key man in Montpellier’s historic team of 2011/12, as they went on to record their first and only Ligue 1 crown ahead of big-spending Paris Saint-Germain. He remained on Montpellier’s books for two more years, with then-manager Rolland Courbis establishing a 4-2-3-1 formation with the playmaker as his “number 10”, utilising the youngster’s pace and creativity behind a lone striker. As a result, Cabella accumulated 115 Ligue 1 appearances during spells with Montpellier and Arles-Avignon, scoring 28 goals and providing a further 18, giving him an average goal involvement of one in every 2.5 games in the French top-flight.

In May, Cabella gave life to rumours of a move to the Premier League by declaring his intention to leave Montpellier. Manchester United and Newcastle were thought to be circling in pursuit of the promising attacking midfielder and it was the Magpies who made the decisive move to swoop on his talents.

An accomplished France under-21 international with 17 appearances and four goals to his name, Cabella made his senior international debut on May 27, 2014 as an 80th minute substitute (replacing Yohan Cabaye) in the 4-0 win over friendly Norway; Cabella was subsequently called up to the France World Cup squad as a replacement for the injured Clement Grenier.

THE PROSPECTS

Having failed to fill the void left by Cabaye in January, Newcastle finished last season with a whimper. After a promising start, they slid to mid-table obscurity as their Fantasy prospects diminished. However, 2014/15 marks a fresh start and, with a few quality signings in place and a favourable opening spell of fixtures, their assets looks set to make a return to our watchlists, boosted by some very reasonable prices.

Landing in the Premier League off the back of a season which brought 14 goals and seven assists in 37 Ligue 1 appearances (equating to just 1.75 games per strike or assist), Cabella looks a promising prospect as Pardew attempts to improve his side’s record of 43 goals in the last campaign. The Magpies’ boss is clearly delighted with his transfer dealings and outlined his expectations for the new signing:

“I’d like to pay tribute to my staff who worked really hard for this one because he’s a player we think is important…I am just looking forward to seeing an exciting talent in the team and someone who can open the door… He’s a player who has been on our radar for a while. He represents all Newcastle fans love in a player. He has real flair, real hard work, commitment. But he is going to bring a talent to St James’ Park that I hope our fans are going to enjoy. He’s got great ideas when the ball comes to him and, along with Siem [de Jong], is going to improve an area where we definitely needed some help”

Interestingly, Newcastle’s failings in front of goal last season were not for the want of trying. In fact, only Chelsea (5.2), Manchester City (5.4), Liverpool (5.5) and Tottenham (6.1) took fewer minutes to produce an effort on goal on average. The Magpies’ 6.2 minutes per chance bettered the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United (both averaged 6.9 minutes per chance).

Newcastle’s plight ultimately came down to poor conversion rates – be that the quality of chances produced or the precision in despatching those opportunities. Only Norwich (6%) were more wasteful than Pardew’s men, who scored from just 7.4% of their chances created, despite Cabaye’s efforts to boost those figures in the first half of the season (Cabaye converted 11.1% of his opportunities).

Given the recent signing of Siem de Jong, another major coup who also plies his trade as an attacking midfielder, there’s little doubt that he will look to Cabella, along with the Dutchman, to improve the quality of the chances created. The pair should be central to his plans for play in the final third and offer a strong security of start.

As mentioned, the fixtures have also fallen in their favour. While Newcastle begin the season with the unenviable task of welcoming the League Champions to St. James’ Park, they then embark on a tantalising seven game run of favourable match-ups (CPL, sot, HUL, sot, swa, LEI) from Gameweek 2 – tempting our interest in Pardew’s new attacking assets.

However, in Cabella’s case, it’s currently unclear where he will fit into Pardew’s starting XI. Given that De Jong looks the likeliest to be handed the role in “the hole” behind a lone forward, the Frenchman could be shifted to the flank or even fielded in a more restrictive deep-lying playmaker role in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Bearing in mind that De Jong is cheaper in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) at 7.0 to 7.5 (the two are similarly priced in the Sky Sports games at 6.2 and 6.0 respectively) and has notched in each of his pre-season appearances, Cabella, at least initially, faces an uphill task to get himself noticed. He’ll need to hit the ground running and show the promise to outshine his Dutch team-mate before many are likely to risk investment.

Cabella’s arrival sets up a fascinating shoot-out in Pardew’s midfield; a combination that could well be key to our season as the Gameweeks roll by. For now, De Jong will likely remain the weapon of choice but, if Pardew hands him the stage to impress, Cabella has the talent to emerge as more than a short-term differential.

Sunderland and LIverpool agreed to terms but I think there was a snag with Sunderland were negotiating with Borini. I saw someplace that he was trying to see if a team in Serie A would bite on him but don't hold me to that.

The talk is that Sunderland aren't willing to stump up the (reported) 14m. But in reality it seems the real number is 9m & add-ons.
      I wouldn't blame them, lol.
The latest talk is that 1, possibly 2 Italian clubs are interested but for a lower price. Borini apparently wants to return to Italy rather than Sundy.
I would expect this one to go to August 31st, thus ruling him out as an FPL prospect.

Sunderland agreed the fee (9M potentially up to 14M), in fact the stumbling block is that Borini prefer to fight for his place.

He will be down on pecking order if we get Remy. That's for sure.

Surely he is just saying that he will fight for his place because he doesn't want to live and play in Sundy?
Who came blame him? Still a young lad... I bet he goes back to Italy. Even if it is a 1 year loan deal with option to buy. Just like Aquilani...

He was like a piece of gold for my team last season. If he would go to Sunderland, I will have him in my team at a point of time. However, it seems unlikely, Liverpool are asking a high price for him. It could go on until the closure of the transfer window.

Is rvp the worst value premium forward?

Showed this a couple pages ago. He has averaged 0.08 points per minute over the last three seasons.

    Comparable players:

    Rooney - 0.077
Walcott - 0.074 (but 0.085 over the last two seasons)
    Dzeko - 0.08
    Aguero - 0.081

    And for just last season...

    Sturridge - 0.087
    Yaya - 0.083
    Ramsey - 0.083

He is the most expensive but he is now even older than he has been at any time in the last three years!

I think the trouble with last season was he was in a team half of who didn't want to play for their manager.
This had a huge impact on the results and must have affected his ability to get a better FF total.
      But I take your point.

He didn't play a huge number of minutes last season anyway so didn't affect the total so much. My main point is really that rooney seems better at that price.

      Amazing deduction skills here 😆

I have to agree though. Guy wasn't in the top 10 strikers last year points wise and is somehow the most expensive player in the game. If this were anyone else no one would touch him.

But he has a few positives now than last year,. No champions league, manager who might suit him and a better team/performance is likely. Good fixtures at the start to boot. I want him but that hefty price tag has made me look elsewhere.

    pet peeves:

    1) "giroud was the 3rd highest scoring striker last season"

fantastic, he also played the 3rd highest number of games, and started the most games of any striker. so what does it mean? is he amazing or did he just have a great injury record? is it a bit of both? how much of both? can i get away with another question mark?
wish someone would just post a points per game list instead then let people find discover the context for themselves and whether that context might apply again this season, and if so where and when in the season.

    adebayor 5.71
    lukaku 5.42
    giroud 5.19
    remy 5.19
    dzeko 5.06
    lambert 4.84
    bony 4.65
    rodirguez 4.60
    podolski 4.55
    benteke 3.96
    soldado 3.57
    negredo 3.41

    2) anything about points per minute.

    player A scores 6 points in 90mins.
    player B scores 5 points in 65mins.
    player C scores 1 point in 10mins.

player A gets you the most points every week yet is rated as the worst. imagine how stupid it would look if someone wrote: "aguero: pros: gets taken off early a lot, goes off injured a lot, gets eased back in from the bench a lot, rarely plays 90mins." similarly i'm not fist pumping because dzeko got me 1 point in just 10mins off the bench. i'm throwing a cushion instead.
gameweeks end when each team has played a match, not when each team has played enough matches for each player to reach 90mins.

My family moved there from OZ a few years. I spent a year in jeddah before headingback to Perth.

From a professional point of view i'd say it's fantastic. Petrol, tax, salary are as good as they get.

socially it's a bit of a nightmare tbh. if your kids are young i would say it's okay, especially if they get into some british school. The environment inside the schools is pretty different from the city itself (there 2 main ones i can remember). If your wife/gf's moving with you, you could be in for a little trouble. Just giving you a heads up 😉

Points per minute is viable if used in the right context. Its a way of normalising. You can quickly calculate it from data on fpl and compare. You then look into whether your conclusion bears out.

Eg a player plays 10 minutes and gets 1 point. This barely affects his ppm stats.

If you consider those 10 minutes a game, it actually penalises him quite a lot.

Sure, but its not useful in predictig the future if you think a player will start more, eg dzeko.

how about a compromise. points per minute can be used as long as it's not used on man city strikers.
aguero was the man who introduced me to how shoddy a measure it was. all for it outside of FPL when it highlighted how aguero's minutes per goal was superior to suarez's

Nice rant. I think the points per minutes thin only comes into play if you expect them to get more gametime this year, esp someone who's moved clubs and now will be starting every week as opposed to cameos.

Sometimes people go overboard on stats, touches in the box, chances created etc. And forget that at the end of the day it's all about who's getting the points.

Agree that ppm is not often used well but it is an attempt to sort out floors and ceilings for players, albeit an imperfect one as your last line so eloquently explains.

During the season I like to track how often a player has gotten returns (security of 5-9 pts) + how often they have hit a big haul (explosiveness of 10+ pts). Any player who can do both is welcome in my team regardless of how many minutes per match it takes them to do it.

Just a thought regard Point Per Minute:
The scenario mentioned by Applebonkers is a particular small sample size:

      player A scores 6 points in 90mins.
      player B scores 5 points in 65mins.
      player C scores 1 point in 10mins

Which results to an outcome that player C has the a higher than ppm than player A and B, which is a likely scenario over 1 game period.

My concern with this is that statistics in general should be looked at in large sample sizes. 1 extra point and 10 extra minutes on the overall ppm won't make much significant difference if we are looking at a larger sample size.

Now if they play 10 games with a similar outcomes we still have around 1 whole game in total (90mins) with 9pts, add in the rare goal or assist they might get and it may influence the data but in general the larger sample size (minutes) you more reliable the estimation is on how many pts they'll get if they play the entire match.

Evening. Not sure if this is possible but does anyone know where I can access a list of the FPL prices at the end of last season? I know we can see them on each player's page when we click on the i button but was hoping there was a page with all of them together.

I'm interested in exploring which players have come in higher or lower than they ended the year -- thinking about Giroud and Sterling both starting at 8.5m and also if we subconsciously judge players like CPL defenders based on last year's prices.

    Cheers in advance.

From my calcs Agger had the best PPM
        1. Agger
        2. Baines
        3. Kolorov

But i think PPM are less relevant to defenders, best to look at the overall defensive clean sheets chance and then look at the individuals goals/assists with some consideration to yellow/red cards

aguero really should be excluded though. he's such a unique striker in his usage. his talent makes him nailed, yet his allergy to the full 90 just ruins everything. the day he suddenly plays regular 90s like all the other strikers as good as him around europe i will apologise

          I eagerly anticipate that day.

But I haven't used this analysis on aguero except in the example where I was trying to display my distaste for rvp's price. Aguero just obviously wont play the minutes that make it a useful comparison.

Do you think Cahill - Pieters - Ben Davies - Neil Taylor - Gamboa (RB West Brom are signing that I like) are good enough for my defenders?

Not necessarily. For me, it is probably too much. But to each their own.
Tell me about this Gamboa guy...

Well, he started for Costa Rica at the World Cup. He's good going forward and got the assist for Campbell's goal against Uruguay. One of a few Costa Ricans that did well in Norway and I'm sure he'll start for West Brom over Baird and Wisdom. If he's 4.5m I'm definitely getting him though I hope they'll list him for cheaper than that at 4.0m.

bit worried that Albrighton is the only viable 4.5 pick atm , 2 weeks in everyone will sell him and value will plummet

Yeah especially with their tough fixtures, if he doesn't score then all the casuals will start to ship him for some other 4.5m mid who scored the week before...

Most people will then ship him to avoid the inevitable price drop...

I'm going for a differential nailed on 4.5m who gets the odd assist...

I'm just going with my feeling on it...

Someone will probably make themselves known as an option in the first few weeks anyway, rendering this decision almost pointless...

True, Wanyama averaged a goal every 6 games for Celtic, so now that he's settled he might be a good choice.

That's why I'm not getting him. If you want a bench warmer then go for the likes of Britton, Wanyama , tiote. One's who are nailed on with low ownership

I don't totally understand the perceived need to have a Chelsea defender to start the season. Apart from not really knowing whether anyone is truly nailed on now that Luis is in the mix, they have a very difficult opening 11 games. Yes Mou can park the bus against top teams, but statistically you would not expect more than 5 CS in the opening 11 weeks.
The only reason they might be tempting is because their opening 2 fixtures do look favourable. But unless a wildcard is planned in gw3, I can't even see that being worthwhile. It would mean ~2.0 less to invest in midfield or attack, and would probably mean a hit to get rid of the Chelsea defender and to beef up the midfield/forwards after gw3.
It will be easier to illustrate this once the RMT tool is up & running. But I think that a rotation of MUN SOT STO HUL CPL covers the first 11 weeks well enough, and allows for in attackers that may bring in the big points.

The thing is the other teams will have you covered but they often don't deliver. Chelsea are rock solid. They will get you clean sheets and for only 0.5 more than a united defender.

I'll definitely try to get a CHE defender after gw11, when they start on a fabulous run of fixtures. But there is little point holding for gws 3-11. eve, mci, ARS, mun, liv for all the odd weeks. Brutal. I just don't believe that they will have more CS than a team will good fixtures, and won't compare at all to a good defensive rotation.

The attraction relys in the fact that CHE are an actual threat to get a CS home or away against anyone in the league.

Man City, Ars, Man Utd or otherwise.

This isn't saying that a cheaper rotation isn't the better approach but, I completly understand the appeal.

Nice team. Ozil is being avoided by many on here but hey we cant all have the same team.
Keep an eye on Cameron pre season as they signed Bardsley over the summer and i thing both will compete for the same spot.
