Southampton manager Ronald Koeman made his third signing of the summer last Wednesday by acquiring Ryan Bertrand on a season-long loan from Chelsea. The 24-year-old follows Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle to St Mary’s, with the Saints reportedly given an option to make the deal permanent for £10m at the end of the upcoming campaign:

After completing the move, Bertrand admitted he turned down a number of options to sign up and insists the chance to ply his trade under Koeman was too good an opportunity to ignore:

“For me personally, this is another chance to play and a chance to join a fantastic club that’s moving in the right direction. With the set-up the club’s got, the manager it has coming in and the ethos it has, I thought this was a perfect match. The manager’s name speaks for itself, so to play under somebody like that will be good for me. His ethos and the way he plays matches my game. I had a lot of options and a lot of interest but, having met the people and spoken to the manager and seen what the club is about, in my mind this was the perfect decision. I’m looking to get games and to play regularly in the way and the formation that I like, and I’m sure that will benefit my game. I still think the best is yet to come from me.â€

The History

A product of the Gillingham youth system, Bertrand was snapped up by Chelsea as a 15-year-old back in July 2005. With the likes of Ashley Cole and, more recently, Cesar Azpilicueta and summer signing Filipe Luis ahead of him in the pecking order, it’s clear that a move away suits all parties concerned – indeed, this is now the seventh time the Blues have farmed out the defender on loan.

Bertrand’s first spell away from the Bridge came at Bournemouth back in 2006/07, where he made five appearances for the first-team. The following year he was on the move again – first Oldham (21 appearances) then Norwich (18 appearances, two assists) afforded the left-back game time before he spent the next season on loan with the Canaries once again, where he was handed 38 starts.

In 2009/10, Bertrand was off to Reading, where he finished third in the voting for the club’s Player of the Season after 44 Championship outings produced one goal and three assists. The defender then spent the first half of the following campaign farmed out to Nottingham Forest, making 19 appearances and producing a single assist, before returning to Chelsea midway through the season. Managing just two goals and a pair of assists from 58 appearances over nine years for the Blues, Bertrand was also loaned out to Aston Villa midway through last season, where he started 16 league games for Paul Lambert’s side.

The 24-year-old has represented England from Under-17 to Under-21 level a total of 31 times, whilst he has also turned out for the senior international side twice making his debut back in August 2012.

The Prospects

After losing Luke Shaw to Man United earlier this summer, Koeman has been scouring the market for cover as he attempts to rebuild his decimated first-team squad. Youngster Matt Targett had started the three friendlies prior to Bertrand’s arrival but, as the Saints boss explained, he’s reluctant to put too much pressure on the teenager:

“I’m very happy to be able to bring Ryan in. He is a top player who will bring a lot of quality to the team. He has experience at the highest level and is an exciting, attacking player, which is what I like to see in my full-backs. I’ve been very impressed with how Matt Targett is doing in pre-season, but he is still young and developing, which I am sure he will continue to do over the coming seasons. Left-back is an important position in the team because it is quite specialised in terms of the attributes needed to play there, so it is nice to get this signing completed because it gives us some stability.â€

Judging by his manager’s comments – and that likely £10m outlay come the end of the season – Bertrand, after years of frustration, looks poised to finally be handed the chance to nail down a regular role. His arrival all but ends Fantasy managers’ hopes for Targett, who, at a price of 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League, had the potential to offer us great value ahead of a very kind run of opening fixtures. Instead, the youngster is poised to remain as back-up for the position, as Bertrand – 5.0 in FPL and 5.1 in the Sky Sports game – gets the nod as Koeman’s first-choice option.

The mass exodus at St Mary’s is a real cause for concern, though. With Dejan Lovren also joining Shaw in departing the club, it remains to be seen whether Koeman can replicate the resilience that delivered 15 clean sheets in the previous campaign under Mauricio Pochettino – as rumours abound of a possible exit for defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, many have their doubts over the Saints’ defensive prospects.

Nonetheless, it’s impossible to overlook Southampton’s kind opening fixtures. Over the first 12 Gameweeks, Koeman’s side face only two of last term’s top eight in a schedule that’s rated above any other club by our Season Ticker. Home games with West Brom, Newcastle, QP, Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester, supplemented by trips to the likes of West Ham, Swansea, Hull and Villa certainly suggest that Bertrand could be quick off the mark as he looks to finally prove himself as a top-level talent.

It’s worth keeping an eye on Koeman’s summer shopping spree, though – if he fails to replace Lovren, the likes of Maya Yoshida (4.5) and Jos Hooiveld (4.0) could offer cheaper alternatives, though whether their presence at the back would translate to clean sheets is another matter altogether.

    The Chelsea Back Line

Realistically, in my opinion (of course, this is really all pre season is, opinions, so remember this and use yours) this looks to be the back 4 Chelsea will use in the PL for most games:
    Luis --- Cahill --- Ivanovic --- Azpilicueta

Will be the main back line, however, some games Terry will play. This means either Cahill or Ivanovic to be dropped for some games. Alternatively, Azpi is dropped and Ivan moves to RB but Mourinho loves Azpi so I doubt it.

Because of this, I believe Luis is the most solid option, and also for the reasons I stated in a post I made about a week ago (if you can fish it out).

Terry likes to be rested. He is getting on now and will get some games of course, but they will be limited. He will be more likely to get games in the FA cup or the CL.

Luis too is at threat, for periods, Azpi may move to LB to allow Ivan at RB and Terry at CB but that mixes it all up and will only happen if there is poor form from Luis which may jeopardise the defence.

Surprisingly, the 2 (most likely, of course, IMO) to get regular starts, are the 2 cheaper options, Luis and Azpilicueta at 6.0M a piece.

To us, we see dropped. To Mourinho, he is being rested and playing cup games. It has to happen at some point, and he has spent 20 odd million on a player who will nailed down the LB berth. This means his blue eyed boy Azpilicueta goes back to his preferred RB position. Ivanovic, moves to his preferred CB position (this all seems ideal to him, they should play better in their preffered positions) which mean the last role is for either Cahill or Terry, most games.

I just can't see how Terry can go from playing virtually all the league games and big cup games last year, to someone who will get the odd cup game and premier league game here and there. He's their captain and rock at the back, and it's strange how Chelsea signing a 1st choice LB has made Terry's position become under threat to such an extent. Ivanovic going from virtual ever-present at RB to now the undisputed first choice CB partner to Cahill in most games just because Chelsea signed a LB? It doesn't add up to me. Sure, Terry may get the odd rest, but i don't see what's changed to mean he isn't Mourinho's 1st choice CB anymore. Him and Cahill have a solid partnership. Ivanovic and Cahill/Terry don't. Cahill was benched 8 times in the league last season, Terry wasn't benched at all(thanks to ab for this stat).

There's some pretty big assumptions you're making, all based on Mourinho signing a first choice LB. I don't see why Ivanovic HAS to fit in at CB just because Azpi may play RB. Has there been anything Mourinho to suggest this. Is Ivanovic immune from being dropped? IMO ofcourse

He is old. Younger players who can match if not better his performance most of the time. He has to be eased out at some point and I think he will this season.

Him and Cahill will fight for starts.

    £4.0m DEFENDER ALERT!

Mike Williamson hasn't trained all pre-season and is out with an unspecified injury so hasn't flown to Germany, meaning Steven Taylor (£4.0m) will again partner Coloccini at CB. Yanga-Mbiwa still completely out of favour with the club still shopping him about to some Ligue 1 teams.

The fact that Williamson is still only doing physio and gym work and with no pre-season behind him doesn't make his chances of starting the season very likely.

Steven Taylor as good as nailed on for the time being.

He's actually played the majority of every game but this was mainly at RB as Debuchy had been sold and Janmaat wasn't back from the WC. We sold James Tavernier to Wigan who the was the only other RB we would have had available who wasn't from our youth or developement teams. Ryan Taylor still a way away from being anywhere near ready too.

"Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa’s efforts in pre-season have not gone unnoticed by Alan Pardew this summer.

Pardew tried to offload the French international by offering him to Ligue 1 sides Lens, Bordeaux and Marseille – but none of the French trio were able to strike a financial deal that suited both clubs and the player.

However rather than sulk, Yanga-Mbiwa has redoubled his efforts to get into the first team for the opening game of the season against Manchester City in two weeks time and he is now pushing Steven Taylor hard for the right to partner Fabricio Coloccini.

The former Montpellier captain is way ahead in the leaderboard for the most minutes played this summer on 334 minutes to date. That’s 55 minutes ahead of his nearest rival Vurnon Anita and some margin ahead of the rest of the squad.

And although some players wanted more rest rather than playing at Sheffield Wednesday this week, Yanga-Mbiwa put his hand up to play against the Owls. The defender has returned to pre-season in great shape and it is showing in friendly games so far."

        Replied with this previously but:

Yanga-Mbiwa has played the majority of every game but this was mainly at RB as Debuchy had been sold and Janmaat wasn't back from the WC. We sold James Tavernier to Wigan who the was the only other RB we would have had available who wasn't from our youth or developement teams. Ryan Taylor still a way away from being anywhere near ready too.

Interesting, cheers. The problem is that I don't want a Newcastle defender for GW 1 and by GW 2 or 3, Janmaat may be starting with Yanga-Mbiwa in the middle or even Williamson may be back. Too much uncertainty to risk it. I'm getting Krul anyway.

I'm actually hoping that Yanga-Mbiwa can regain the form that saw him captain Montpellier at just 21 to the Ligue 1 title. He was pretty poor in his first season, hence why Mike Williamson took over at CB.

Steven Taylor is a massive liability. We are worse team with him in it. The only plus side is that he's £4.0m in FPL 🙂

B.R would be absolutely fkin mad to leave Skrtel on the bench behind the likes of Kolo. Sakho. Flan. Enrique. GJ. Best aerial threat, most physical, best all round def u have. Take away own goals and give him Kompany next to him and u have Pallister/Bruce, Dunne/Distin.

Always rated Skrtel. Sakho wank. Gj wank. Kolo past it. Lovren big expectations.

You obviously play fifa and football manager too much. Skrtel is RCB as is Lovren. Very few CBs in world football can play both LCB and RCB. Skrtel has never played LCB. Flanno, Enrique and Johnson are all full backs, so it's not even worth mentioning them. He was a complete liability defensively last season. All his goals were put on a plate for him. Positionally he is all over the place (some of this has to do with Johnson pushing to far forward and not tracking back.) So at the end of the day you don't know what your talking about

I personally think with Lovren and Sahko we have potentially the closest we've ever had to Hansen and Lawro. Sahko the ball playing defender, great on the ball, a real presence with big leadership qualities. Then Lovren a top class all rounded defender, Positionally sound, great in the air, not bad on the ball and quality at tackling.

Didn't you read the papers during the WC?

          He's the best defender, ever...

Also, he scored 2 goals & had 3 CS in 6 WC games so, that means over a 38 games season he's projected to get 12 goals & 19 CS...

£8mil seems like a bargain now doesn't it!

So, long term, I'm going to bring back the idea of tagging comments e.g.: RMT comments can be tagged by the poster, or mods, as RMT comments. Users then have the facility to filter these out of their view of the main stream. We're also thinking of adding different views of the main stream so you can filter and show only comments by those users you follow. Anyway, this is all on the agenda for HomeCrowd upgrades this season.

Short term, I've an idea on how we can manage them for the remaining two weeks and I'll run this past Joe and the community team prior to Monday.

Quick comment on LFC's attacking threat.

I think Sterling will surprise a lot of people this season, he's looked unbelievable in pre-season and this will be his first proper full season. Last season he only came into the team at around the half way point and in his break through season, he disappeared half way through with injuries after a great start. Barring injuries, this should be his first season of continuous football, start to finish.

I've heard lots of "Sturridge needs to be step up" etc but Sturridge scored 20+ goals last season in the league and I think him stepping up with just be his natural progression, if we still had Suarez, I'd expect Sturridge to score more goals than last season.

I'd be surprised if we maintain the same competitive level as last season, a level which everyone was surprised to see last season as well, no-one saw 7th to 2nd, but if even if we don't maintain that level, we still score bucket loads of goals and Sturridge will probably score more goals in the league.

Hard to say, I wouldn't be surprised if we loaned him to another team in the league if he's been given a first team place, as it will do his development the world of good but if he stays then I think he might be a super-sub.

He is a very direct, powerful runner and he will scare the life out of defenses if he comes on after 70-80 minutes against tired legs. I don't see him being a regular starter, but as a super sub or player used in the cups, that will be his role if he stays.

The situation is different to Sterling, as Sterling was fast tracked due to our lack of quality attacking options. Sterling wasn't just a good youth player who was impressing, he was one of the best attackers in the first team, which is both bad and good.

Can see the Spurs game being tight, something like 2-1, but the City could be another 5 goaler, both teams are happy to leave themselves relatively open to aid their attack.

Everyone keeps asking why people are ignoring Sturridge in their fantasy teams. To clear up all the questioning it simply boils down to price and the absence of Suarez.

Last season Suarez created an unbelievable 87 chances and produced 12 assists, contributing considerably to Sturridge's goal haul.

Although Sturridge had a fairly solid shot accuracy at 42% and a 22% conversion rate, when you take away the creative influence of Suarez it is pretty likely that far less chances are going to fall for him to convert, regardless of how lethal he is.

Of course, Suarez looks to have had his role 'filled' by Markovic judging by pre-season line-ups, however as an unknown prospect it is difficult to estimate just how many chances Markovic could potentially lay on for Sturridge. Unless he is something of a revelation and Coutinho steps up his game massively, I would be surprised even Sturridge equals his tally from last season. Factor in his probable involvement in crucial Champions League fixtures and he may even be rested in some of the easier PL fixtures in which he excelled in last season.

Plus, he's 11.5m. Costa is 1m cheaper and has better opening fixtures, in addition to a better creative force behind him with the likes of Hazard and Fabregas providing through balls galore.

52 chances created and 5 assists. May have to take a more central role and link up more directly with Sturridge, but I see him playing on the wing most of the time and providing width.

Suarez's "considering contribution to Sturridge goals haul" was 5 assists, the same amount that Sturridge provided for Suarez.

          1. It's the same for every club in European competition, it's not a problem exclusive to Sturridge.

          2. Rodgers says we're after another striker, someone to work in with Sturridge, that's how we'll deal with extra games, not play Sturridge for every single one.

You've neglected to mention that Sturridge will be the main man in attack, the attack will be built around him, not Suarez like last season.

In terms of fitness, it looks like he'll be getting a proper pre-season, not rushed back like the beginning of last season.

Absence of Suarez? Only 5 assists from him to Studge.
Studge is greedy and takes every chance he can get. Yes he may well be a little over priced but he'll be the main one that the ball goes through.

Apart from price, i'd take Studge over City strikers given the opening fixtures.

Suarez's assists weren't his only crucial contributions to the attack though, were they? Just because Suarez didn't play the final ball to Sturridge, doesn't mean he had no influence on the move/attack from which a Sturridge goal resulted.

Your post is full on conjecture and ignores the most obvious positive factor which is that Sturridge will be the focal point of the attack now Suarez has gone. That has to benefit him.

It's also backed up by the historics, Sturridge scored 0.7 goals per game playing with Suarez and 1 goal per game playing without him.

No longer will he have to cede the best positions in the middle to Suarez. No longer will he have to run the channels to create space for Suarez. It's a two way street and the benefits of Suarez leaving are obvious and completely ignored in your post.

It's for a draft-style league where players have no value... uses FPL points system

RVP then, especially if it's long term as well. Expect Rooney to potentially start a bit better but over the season RVP will outscore him.

I disagree. Rooney cuz he won't get injured as much. And in a draft game you can't transfer out injured players. At least not players of rvps quality cuz they'd be snatched up by your rivals

RVP takes penalty, the answer is obvious!
