With less than a fortnight to go before the big kick-off, Fantasy managers and our community writers and posters are continuing their mission in search of quality budget options and prosperous heavy-hitters, whilst sifting the crop of new top-flight talent.

We look back to soak up the highlights of the week’s community submissions and drop in on the key Hot Topics to contemplate Southampton’s exodus, the potential starting XIs and the case to select a certain Manchester City full-back.

The Community Articles

The community section is simmering nicely as we near that August 16 deadline, with rotations and predicted teamsheets earning some keen interest over the past week.

ForzaInter was the latest community writer to tackle the issue of defensive rotation, putting forward a compelling new angle. His strategy is to focus on heavy-hitting, premium defenders from top sides and supplement them with a cheap defensive pair that can drop in when tricky fixtures rear their heads.

Defence was also the focus of Bowstring The Trout’s budget balancing article in which he lays out some furtehr cheap rotation options, in addition to a handful of mid-priced stoppers.

Meanwhile, The Puntmaster returned with another of his excellent player analysis updates focusing on the new arrivals to the Premier League. This time around he presented a useful summary of the key acquisitions to this point, including links to his new player spreadsheets, which will be particularly helpful to those catching up on his series of must-read updates.

Saniul, is another community writer who has been compiling a series of illuminating spreadsheet analysi. He’s focused his attentions on the potential starting XIs, based on the latest injury, transfer and friendly fixture news and events.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some pre-season analysis or lengthy opinions and foresight to share, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

While I was away on my family holidays this week, Fantasy Football Scout’s moderators and contributors kindly stepped up to take over our daily Hot Topics, covering a range of issues from differentials, to the continuing quest for individuality as we seek to avoid the template team.

Mark posed a pair of differing posers during the week, firstly asking how many new players to the Premier League we will be considering and just how far we should go with our punts on the likes of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea’s Diego Costa?

Meanwhile, Mark also chirped up to ask whether Fantasy managers are being duped into a defensive template by the recent transfers involving the likes of Ben Davies, Dejan Lovren and Andre Wisdom.

Manchester City was a focus for moderators Spencer and Applebonkers’s Hot Topic contributions. Spencer pondered just how much the World Cup will affect the pitch time of those players involved in the latter stages of the tournament, with Sergio Aguero a particular concern.

Ironically, one of those players who could well benefit from late returning World Cup players is the much-maligned Aleks Kolorov. Applebonkers asked whether the defender, who is often referred to as ‘Lolorov’ due to his bandwagaon cameos and frustrating knack of letting us down, could be in for a sensational early start to the campaign. Applebonkers certainly volunteered some compelling statistics to back up investment in the Serbian. Personally, I think this is a blatant attempt to lure Mark into the Kolarov honey trap from the get-go.

Elsewhere, the community’s most experienced Fantasy managers such as Triggerlips and Rasping Drive, were quick to respond to moderator Athletico Timbo’s excellent Hot topic asking for the top tips for success. Efficient short-term planning and watching as many games as possible, were among Rasping Drive’s nuggets of advice. Meanwhile, in a separate Hot Topic, Triggerlips wondered, with so many unknowns in the game, whether Fantasy managers would be better off carrying out minimal planning and seeing how the early season unfolds.

Another experienced campaigner, Torres Magic, also helped out with our daily Hot Topics. His focus was on differential players and proved one of our most discussed posts of the week. Inspired by this thread, Squeaky Bum Time decided to look specifically at some of the best mid-priced differentials available in the Fantasy Premier League game.

While holidaying in Hampshire, the local news inspired my first Hot topic on my return, as I pondered the fate awaiting Southampton following the exodus of their crown jewels in July. Some of the responses demonstrated faith in their remaining players to step up and replace the likes of Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw. Among those who could be destined for a great season is young full-back Matt Targett. Be sure to check on Lucy’s thorough analysis of his prospects here.

While investing in Targett and other Southampton players could be a risk, there was a cast of more reliable sources discussed this week.

Arsenal’s rejuvenated midfielder, Aaron Ramsey, stands out in particular according to the aptly named Aaron Ramessi, who predicts another stellar season for the clinical Welsh playmaker. Elsewhere, Beavis nominated Romelu Lukaku as an asset who could offer us a decent level of assurance, while Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas is said to be another dependable points scorer, particularly before January, if Dandec’s analysis rings true.

Finally, Innsie was on hand to provide this excellent summary of all the key questions during the week, including the demise of Southampton’s squad and the conundrum surrounding Chelsea’s tempting defensive assets.

The Community Tournaments

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing is returning for the 2014/14 Fantasy Premier League season. The code to join is 52587-7172.

Xward has also set up an open FPL league, called “Naughty Filthy Punters” (3079-201991), while Narenda Wicaksono has a league (67393-21769) and a cup (67393-21807) in FPL that is open to the community.

Elsewhere, Zep has set up a dead team challenge, where teams stick with the same squad selection until the end of the season. Full details can be found here.

Glen Johnson is the worst full back I've seen in a long time.

Suprised Rodgers can't see it. For someone who has such a defensive season with Swansea in their 1st PL season, it's shocking how Liverpool's defence has progressively gotten worse since his takeover.

He's played him every single week since his arrival 😕 should've been dropped deep into the last season. If they don't buy a new RB by September, imo it's a wasted transfer window. Liverpool's weak link.

Even if you can't ship him, bring somebody in.

Not like Liverpool have money problems lately. Let him rot in the reserves and make him realise if he wants to play at the top level, get your act together, if not take a pay cut and f' off to a lower club.

That's the problem though, if yous want to challenge for the title and take it seriously you can't be relying on Flanagan. As good as he is for a 21-year-old, he's still as error-prone as Johnson imo at that age and could do with more experience where it's not putting the club at risk.

With the extra fixtures it'll give him more experience this season, but to grow as a team, that Suarez money should've been invested better imo. A top class striker is still missing and RB, probably the two most important areas of the team since Suarez' transfer was agreed.

No sensible observer expects Liverpool to challenge for the title this season. Top 4 is the aim and I'm happy with GJ/Flanno competing for rb this season. As you said Flanno is young and won't improve unless he's playing

Add Wisdom to the mix next season. I don't think it's wise to throw millions at a position that's developing very nicely as is. Waste of money and a waste of these talented youngsters the club has developed

Just as much chance as any of the others.

Arsenal, Chelsea, City, Everton, Spurs all have European games to deal with too.

Granted last year yous didn't have CL fixtures to worry about, but that's why you add depth to the squad this year, so that you can deal with the extra fixtures and still challenge.

theres been the guts of 100 million spent on strengthening the squad

surely everyone at the club and the supporters would expect to challenge once again

I think that would be silly and a lot of fans if they're honest with themselves would agree with me. We've just lost the best player in the league and Chelsea/City/Arsenal in comparison to us are clearly stronger sides. I'm not saying we won't expect to challenge soon but this will be a season of rebuilding. You don't sell by far your best player and bring in a whole new core and expect to be more consistent than those teams I mentioned above. I'll be happy with 4th, also happy to be proved wrong

But yous lost one player, regardless of him being key to the team.

Arsenal lost Van Persie to United and only dropped a place without even bringing in an equally good replacement.

Themoney Suarez brought in was about 75 million. If you break that down you should prioritize with the weak spots in the team.

ST (£30m), CB (£20mil), RB (£15mil) leaving you £10mil spare on top of Liverpool's budget which would probably be another £30m for finishing 2nd to strengthen the squad for the CL.

In the world of football manager maybe but it's not that simple. Wenger is an absolute master when it comes to what you've said. He's kept the continuity of top four regardless and that's what I hope for this season. Fact is when you have a new core all come in at once and at the same time lose one of the best players of a generation they'll need time to settle and adapt. Chelsea and City and even Arsenal can expect to pick up where they left off. We can't. Don't get me wrong I'm hoping that we challenge again this season, just not expecting it. 4th place with proper signs of progression will be fine under the circumstances

Ask yourself though, would any of them get into the RB spot in the other top 6 teams?

That's why yous need another RB. It's no good having three average players in that position.

Like most people I've no idea what Manquillo is like, so we'll just have to wait and see

I personally think flanno is good enough to play right back for liverpool. Why not play a 21 year old local talent, who has already proved he's up to the task already. With back up in Manquillo and mcgloughlin. I'm not sure spending 10-15 million on a right back would actually improve that position.

Regardless of whether flanno would get in the other top 6 sides he is the best option for liverpool. A back 4 of flanno lovren sakho Moreno should be a great improvement on last seasons defence.

I think Flanno would get into Spurs back line to be fair, maybe even Arsenals over Debuchy (he is prone to mistakes), City, United and Chelsea have the cash to make a big signing at that position, it's just good we're giving youngsters the chance.

Why 5th? He could easily be your 4th Mid and save up on the 5th. He is most probably a starter to start the season so you can't just rotate Young, especially with United's fixtures being relatively easy. I think

if you run someone like Naismith or Bojan as your 3rd striker you could easily fit in Young as the 5th mid I think and then rotate 343/352 based on fixtures/form, plus it's always easy to downgrade to a 4.5m (especially if Young picks up steam and you want to beef up elsewhere)

Young looks great, but he's tough to fit into a team. I still think Siggy is a better option for that fourth mid (or fifth mid in a 3-5-2) spot, and he's a bit expensive for the bench in the 3-4-3.

Enjoyable game all in all, both teams need to sort out their defences. Pool I expect to do better when Lovren is in place but I still believe Agger is sorely missed (injured right now so not much could be done about that).

United need to be rid of Jones and Smalling.

Rodgers has said he is looking to add to his attack in the current transfer window. Just be patient, I reckon we will get someone. Plus you need to account for the fact that we still have to integrate Lallana and Markovich into this team. They both have that quality up front that you are talking about.

Lallana is an excellent player and will be immense IMO, but Marko is still young, he;ll be eased in and even then he is really just potential, his final ball won't be quite up to scratch to compete for the entire season or against top opposition. The thing is apparently since the Remy deal fell through (I don't rate Remy anyway) we're looking to Bony. IMO opinion he is a good player but overpriced and not the kind of player we need.

Agger would be kept and played every week under most managers but he doesn't play the way BR wants for a cb clearly. So I'm not gonna slate the big man he clearly knows what he's doing and what he wants. I hope we sell Agger rather than letting him rot away on the bench. Better for him and the club. 20 mil for 4th choice defender is a no brainer

I dont fully trust either Jones or Smalling but centre backs are needed to come in, not go the other way. I dont see how a 3-5-2 is going to work with only 3 first team centre backs so surely at least one must come in.

I reckon Pool will be better defensively with Lovren and any full back that we sign. GJ needs a kick up the arse or needs some serious competition for his place. He really used to be quite good, its just sad to see his performance drop so much.

United need new CB's i don't think the current crop will cut it for the entire season and I'm pretty sure LVG with all the money he has available to him will buy someone better.

Disappointing to see Liverpool lose tonight. I think it's going to be a big challenge for many managers this year to counter LvG's 352.

The midfield, wingbacks and defenders do the dirty work allowing Mata, Rooney and RVP to shine.

because people are slaves to the prices. a player isn't good enough to be a starter unless he costs a minimum of 8m

then you always get the fan Fantasy favorites like Siggy and Arnie who are exceptions to the rule..

not saying I'm definitely getting Young in, but it is tempting especially if you can squeeze him in as your 5th mid alongside a 3rd striker like Bojan and having the freedom to rotate based on form and fixtures

It's why it's a poor combination to have. Two rotating 4.5's has usually been the best thing to do in previous years so I don't know why it's any different this year.

Not looking forward to benching hauls...

Happens every year... looking to go with one keeper this year...

Have considered just sticking Krul in there tbh. If I downgrade my jovetic/ dzeko to Austin I can beef up my other areas such as second gk and 4th def and maybe get a 5mill 5th mid.

            Yeah I've had various combinations

            Krul Elliot
            Krul Foster

But right now, I'm liking Begovic 4m...

Was all set for Vito and Krul but worried about panti and not great rotation. Thought about rotating speroni and green but already rotating caulker and mariappa/ dann/ ward

Making a keeper Sub after 13 GWs isn't the worst plan at all. theres no guarantee that your rotating 4.5's will outscore Begovich in this period.

Plus there's every chance you get the keeper selection wrong in many GWs.

Exactly my thinking... Stoke have a great run up until GW12, they might get just as many CS away as at home...

Tempted, but what about in the unlikely event he gets injured or sent off?
            Waste of a transfer.

Remember last year (or the year before?) I went with DDG, and Lindegaard was starting.

that's the plan yep, will make a keeper switch around then, happy to do so as the transfer will not be for a 1 week punt - whoever the keeper is with the form/team/fixtures is at that price range.

    RMT

    Mannone (Krul)

    Luis-P.Jones-Caulker (Ward, Bruce)

    Hazard-Mata-Eriksen-Siggy (El Ahmadi)

    Rooney-Dzeko- ?????

Needing a third striker, possibly Lukaku, but early fixtures aren't flattering. Also not set on Dzeko.

I'm in a similar spot, decided to go cheap (bojan) and upgrade my fifth MF to Ramsey. Couldn't find another striker I liked more than Rambo. Plus bojan provides good cover in weeks 1 and 4 when siggy has tough match-ups

Bojan had definitely been in my mind as a third for a while, just think Stoke are going to struggle to score many goals.

I'm i reading right here!!? People singing youngs praises. Been working so missed the game. Is he actually a viable option!? Playing as a wingback though right?

he may well have nailed down that rwb spot with his performances in pre season and saved his united career in the process

Cheers Zep. Mata and Rooney scored eh? Reckon Shaws little blip is over then and nailed on? All this talk of Young but Shaw will get clean sheet bonuses.
