QPR boss Harry Redknapp continue to strengthen his first-team squad for the season ahead with the loan acquisition of Mauricio Isla from Italian champions Juventus. The Chilean is the fourth player to arrive at Loftus Road this summer and follows Rio Ferdinand, Steven Caulker and Jordan Mutch to the club as Redknapp looks to prevent another drop down into the Championship:

After confirming the season-long deal via the R’s official website, Redknapp proceeded to talk up the 26-year-old’s prospects for the season ahead and reckons Isla will be a key figure for the London club:

“He’s a top player and we’re delighted to have him here. He showed his quality in the World Cup for Chile and it’s a great loan signing for us. He’s a versatile player, he’s full of energy. I’m confident he’ll be a really big asset for us this season.”

Isla – who is believed to have turned down a number of offers to join up with QPR – was equally enthusiastic over the upcoming campaign:

“I am very happy to be here – this is the start of an exciting new adventure for me. Everybody knows that the Premier League is the greatest league in the world and the QPR proposal is very interesting and one I am very excited about. I hope this coming season is going to be great for both the club and myself. I will give 100 per-cent in every game to help QPR in the Premier League.”

The History

Isla spent eight years in the Universidad Catolica youth system in his native Chile from 1999-2007. Starting off as a forward, he was converted into a defender but failed to play a single match for the club – instead, his displays in the 2007 FIFA Under 20 World Cup persuaded Italian outfit Udinese to hand Isla a five-year contract.

Afforded his Serie A debut in December 2007, Isla’s pace and stamina down the right flank quickly cemented his role as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation. A slow start to his career in the Italian top-flight produced just one assists over 42 league appearances in his first couple of campaigns before Isla served up six goals and 18 assists in his final 85 league matches before Juventus came calling in June 2012.

Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Isla failed to nail down a regular role. With Stephan Lichsteiner preferred on the right of Juventus’ 3-5-2, the Chilean was afforded just 18 league starts and 11 sub appearances and, over 47 matches in all competitions, chipped in with five assists.

On the international scene, Isla made his senior debut back in September 2007 and has proceeded to play 37 times for his country, including four appearances at Brazil 2014, and found the net on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

It’s somewhat telling that a change in tactics over the summer has preceded the Chilean’s arrival. Redknapp utilised a 4-4-1-1 in the Championship last season, with the occasional switch to 4-4-2, but the R’s boss has rolled out a 3-4-1-2 in recent matches – given Isla’s familiarity with the system, the new boy should settle quicker in his new environment.

Whilst Isla is versatile enough to be fielded in defence and in the centre of the park, a role on the right of the four-man midfield looks tailor-made and immediately casts doubts over Danny Simpson’s game time for the season ahead. Classified as a defender across the Fantasy games, the Chilean looks poised to offer us an out of position option under Redknapp – earlier today, he was priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), mirroring the cost of fellow new boy Steven Caulker, who netted five goals for Cardiff last time around.

With Rio Ferdinand at 4.5 and looking nailed on, though, many may baulk at a potential price of 5.0, bearing in mind Redknapp’s side mustered just 16 clean sheets in the Championship last term. Isla’s attacking potential could more than atone for that, though; if he can bring his Udinese form, there’s every reason to be optimistic over a player who affords the R’s plenty of top-level experience in the upcoming campaign.

The opening schedule hands the R’s home fixtures against Hull, Sunderland and Stoke in the first five Gameweeks and affords Redknapp the chance to make Loftus Road a fortress for the season ahead. With the likes of Ferdinand and Caulker bringing a much-needed quality to the back-three, Isla’s raids down the right could become a familiar for R’s fans this term and he gets off the mark early, has the quality to persuade many to get on board.

Ranking my favourite 4.5 defenders. Can someone help me with the last 2? 🙂

Mariappa (Crystal Palace) - Big boost here http://t.co/cWiCJU64JJ after uncertainty over his position during pre season. Offers the cheaper route into a strong Crystal Palace defence as Ward/Dann/Delaney/Hangeland and are all at 5.0. Hennessey is at 4.5, the same as Mariappa, but too much uncertainty at the GK position for my liking (Speroni 5.0).

N Taylor (Swansea) - Williams and Rangel are at 5.0. Fabianski at 5.0. Expecting Federico Fernandez to replace Chico but he should be in at 5.0. Swansea defence likely to be less solid than last season at least in the beginning, with many changes this summer.

Ferdinand (QPR) – Less nailed on than Caulker (5.0) but more so than Dunne or Onuoha or Hill (all 4.5) in the centre back spots. Several competition on the wing backs (Harry Redknapp wants to employ 3 5 2) with Simpson, Isla, Traore, Yun the contenders. I do expect QPR defence to be decent actually with Ferdinand and Caulker quality additions there. Green (4.5) acually cost the same as Ferdinand though. Another concern is Ferdinand’s age – but there was news that he is actually fit to play but not chosen by Moyes.

    van Aanholt (Sunderland)

    Chester (Hull)

Both nailed on. Hull have the better fixtures, Van Aanholt will get forward more and has more chance of getting some assists. Both decent 4.5 options

Mariappa carrying a knock and unlikely to start.

Talyor - agreed, but not sure what Swansea's backline prospects are. New BPS would favour him.

Ferdinand - I would be worried every week that 'Arry my rest Rio's knees.

PVA - a lot of love for him, but it is Sunderland.

Chester - Europa League and a stretched side, not for me.

Geoff Cameron (4.5) at Stoke is someone no one is picking up on. Had a great WC and Stoke open well. Chris Baird (4M) and WBA I think is going to play in midfield. If you don't have Krul (which is seems everyone does) then Coloccini (4.5M) is a good pick. Fantasy nightmare from seasons past, Alan Hutton (4M) seems to have won a RWB role, though I don't know how.

Coupled with an attacking minded approach I don't think Stoke defence is going to be as solid.

Yeah Cork was a great deputy to Wanyama.

I follow this team 24/7. Trust me, he has been bought for a Cb. He is a massive lad at 6ft 4 with experience at CB. Schneiderlin is unlikely to go but if he went, he would be replaced by a genuine quality midfielder with an established reputation as a CM or DM. Schneiderlin trained today and Spurs are no where near his valuation, 10m vs 27m. We don't sell our best players on the cheap.

sterling seems to be heavily involved in pool's attack likely to assist many, win penalties

mata was improved from last year but in pre season united scored like 20 goals and mata scored just 2 (one deflection) and 2 assists, this makes me lean towards sterling but then no European matches thus no rotation risk for mata (only kagawa threat)

I've been comparing Fabregas with Hazard with Costa using the comparison matrix on Squawka.
Here's some stats for each of them from last season (all stats after games/minutes played are averages per game) :

    Games/minutes played:
    Fabregas: 36/2466
    Hazard: 35/2890
    Costa: 35/2957

    Key Passes:
    Fabregas: 1.25
    Hazard: 2.43
    Costa: 1.2

    Assists:
    Fabregas: 0.36
    Hazard: 0.2
    Costa: 0.09

    Chances created:
    Fabregas: 1.61
    Hazard: 2.63
    Costa: 1.29

    Goals scored:
    Fabregas: 0.22
    Hazard: 0.4
    Costa: 0.77

    Total shots:
    Fabregas: 1.44
    Hazard: 2.09
    Costa: 3.09

Of course, it is important to bear in mind the difference between the Premier League and La Liga .

Why you should spend big on forwards:

A lot of people have noticed that when you look at points per million figures defenders and goalkeepers offer 'value,' whereas forwards are comparatively expensive. They sometimes conclude from this that we ought to be more willing to embrace wacky 5 at the back formations and place our fantasy hopes in the hands of Bojan and Charlie Austin. I think everyone instinctively knows that these people are making an error in their reasoning somewhere along the line but I'd like to suggest where.

My theory is based on the idea of 'value above replacement.' They theory is that fantasy players that score at a little over 3 points per game are pretty easy to find. There are always 4.5 and 5.0 priced defenders that will get you 120 in a season (Ward, Shaw, Demel last season) and budget midfield options that will do you the same (Sidwell. Noble, Shelvey, Mutch). Over half the leagues goalkeepers got a similar score, which is why anybody who pays more than 9.0 for their keepers is bonkers.

However, it is actually much harder for a striker to get 120 points than the other positions. I think only 10 managed it last season (I am looking at players still in the league so it will miss some players who have transferred out) compared to 22 in midfield, 15 in defence and 12 goalkeepers. The reason for this is they are the only position that doesn't receive any defensive credit and they are rewarded less for their goals. If we look at players who scored 180 points, i.e. star players who have value way above that of a 'replacement player' the picture is reversed. There were 4 forward with 180 points and Lambert got 179. 3 midfield players broke the 180 point barrier, only Coleman in defence and the highest scoring keeper got 160.

The overall picture is clear. If you want a viable but not spectacular fantasy player you can find plenty of them the further you get back the imaginary fantasy pitch. If you want to get one in the striker position you will probably have to pay 7.5 million for Loic Remy or Jay Rodrigues. These guys will get no more points than defenders that cost a million less and only a few more than the defenders that cost 4.5 and 5.0. If you want spectacular points then strikers remain one the best available positions and, given how hard it is for non-brilliant strikers to be good fantasy players, you will get the best value relative to the possible replacement player. Costa, Ronney and Sturridge for me.

Also, the reason less strikers managed it is partly because there are less strikers full stop. Each team only has a few listed, where as they have about 3x the number in defence and midfield.

Its not about owning a 3 points a game player, its when you buy someone in form and sell them for someone else in form. I doubt anyone had one player they kept all of last season.

I agree there are less strikers full stop. But there are 3 potential 5ppg slots there and 0 potnetial 5ppg slots in defence. That is why you should be spending your money there.

Like a lot of people my best run of form last year was when I had 3 of Suarez, Aguero, Rooney and Sturridge up front at the same time. This is not coincidence, it is the way that the poitn scoring system is structured. People telling others to 'balance' their teams are giving out poor advice.

but the problem is i do not really fancy all 3 to fire together..i would rather have 2 of them and rotate and get the in form strikers accordingly. also that if 1 of the 3 strikers fail u have lesser alternative premium options(only kun in the same price range) so you will likely have to downgrade to a 8.5m or 6m options, leaving a lot of money in bank that have to be re-invested using a few transfers.

As many ppl have tried..having all 3 would mean having at most 2 premium midfielder and alot of other budget options. abit of all eggs in a basket for me especially in a wc season where the top clubs have alot of players away and may not get into good form straight away.

yes ideally having 3 top strikers are good..but at the start of the season where budget is low its more feasible to have only 2 out of 3.

    * He's reverse OOP

    * Failed in various easier leagues
    * Even though he is on set pieces, very far from a specialist.

I would like to start with Dzeko over Costa, potentially leaving the money in the bank as an option. The problem is, if I have 2.0 in the bank and no mids higher than 9mil, and Yaya explodes GW1, I know where that money's going to go before Costa's even kicked a ball. Back Costa or cave and go for Yaya over Ramsey?

Ok I admit Liverpool & arsenal are much better covered by
Ramsey & sturridge than Sterling & Giroud

    But £3.5m better ???

This would criple defence & mean something like an Eriksen to Siggy

On the plus side makes it easier to switch sturridge (or Rooney my other striker ) to Aguero once fit
    And I want Aguero

With Suarez gone I see two arguments for/against owning Sturridge:

For: Liverpool's main threat, 22 goals last season, 2nd most attacking side, lethal.

Against: No Suarez to link up with, possible rotation with CL, injury risk, high price.

We reckon Sturridge will hit 20+ goals again this season?

If he's fit for long enough he's at least a 50% chance of being top goalscorer. Incredibly selfish yet still capable of assists. Liverpool were spanking crap teams even before Suarez went into god mode, it's just now they can beat big teams as well.

It is on the high side IMO (for GW1). Unless all of the money is in Baines, tat kind of budget worries me b/c it make sit harder (more transfers) to extact the cash you want to upgrade into the in-form player. Make sure your lineup gives you the ability to react to your mistakes without radical surgery.

Given price, pre season form and what we know from last season plus fixtures I'd put Fabregas just below Ramsey and Mata. It's close though...its just there's so many other good options for Chelsea. But for ManU its basically just Rooney and Mata at the moment.

I do like Fabregas though...goals, assists and bonus no matter where he plays...that's FPL gold dust.

I'm in exactly the same boat. It's painful to leave him out of my team, but Ramsey and Mata edge it.
