QPR boss Harry Redknapp continue to strengthen his first-team squad for the season ahead with the loan acquisition of Mauricio Isla from Italian champions Juventus. The Chilean is the fourth player to arrive at Loftus Road this summer and follows Rio Ferdinand, Steven Caulker and Jordan Mutch to the club as Redknapp looks to prevent another drop down into the Championship:

After confirming the season-long deal via the R’s official website, Redknapp proceeded to talk up the 26-year-old’s prospects for the season ahead and reckons Isla will be a key figure for the London club:

“He’s a top player and we’re delighted to have him here. He showed his quality in the World Cup for Chile and it’s a great loan signing for us. He’s a versatile player, he’s full of energy. I’m confident he’ll be a really big asset for us this season.”

Isla – who is believed to have turned down a number of offers to join up with QPR – was equally enthusiastic over the upcoming campaign:

“I am very happy to be here – this is the start of an exciting new adventure for me. Everybody knows that the Premier League is the greatest league in the world and the QPR proposal is very interesting and one I am very excited about. I hope this coming season is going to be great for both the club and myself. I will give 100 per-cent in every game to help QPR in the Premier League.”

The History

Isla spent eight years in the Universidad Catolica youth system in his native Chile from 1999-2007. Starting off as a forward, he was converted into a defender but failed to play a single match for the club – instead, his displays in the 2007 FIFA Under 20 World Cup persuaded Italian outfit Udinese to hand Isla a five-year contract.

Afforded his Serie A debut in December 2007, Isla’s pace and stamina down the right flank quickly cemented his role as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation. A slow start to his career in the Italian top-flight produced just one assists over 42 league appearances in his first couple of campaigns before Isla served up six goals and 18 assists in his final 85 league matches before Juventus came calling in June 2012.

Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Isla failed to nail down a regular role. With Stephan Lichsteiner preferred on the right of Juventus’ 3-5-2, the Chilean was afforded just 18 league starts and 11 sub appearances and, over 47 matches in all competitions, chipped in with five assists.

On the international scene, Isla made his senior debut back in September 2007 and has proceeded to play 37 times for his country, including four appearances at Brazil 2014, and found the net on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

It’s somewhat telling that a change in tactics over the summer has preceded the Chilean’s arrival. Redknapp utilised a 4-4-1-1 in the Championship last season, with the occasional switch to 4-4-2, but the R’s boss has rolled out a 3-4-1-2 in recent matches – given Isla’s familiarity with the system, the new boy should settle quicker in his new environment.

Whilst Isla is versatile enough to be fielded in defence and in the centre of the park, a role on the right of the four-man midfield looks tailor-made and immediately casts doubts over Danny Simpson’s game time for the season ahead. Classified as a defender across the Fantasy games, the Chilean looks poised to offer us an out of position option under Redknapp – earlier today, he was priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), mirroring the cost of fellow new boy Steven Caulker, who netted five goals for Cardiff last time around.

With Rio Ferdinand at 4.5 and looking nailed on, though, many may baulk at a potential price of 5.0, bearing in mind Redknapp’s side mustered just 16 clean sheets in the Championship last term. Isla’s attacking potential could more than atone for that, though; if he can bring his Udinese form, there’s every reason to be optimistic over a player who affords the R’s plenty of top-level experience in the upcoming campaign.

The opening schedule hands the R’s home fixtures against Hull, Sunderland and Stoke in the first five Gameweeks and affords Redknapp the chance to make Loftus Road a fortress for the season ahead. With the likes of Ferdinand and Caulker bringing a much-needed quality to the back-three, Isla’s raids down the right could become a familiar for R’s fans this term and he gets off the mark early, has the quality to persuade many to get on board.

Mourinho feels like he has the horses for all courses this year so I expect JT to rotate. Fortunately as a fan, unfortunately for FPL, I think JT plays the hard, important minutes. He will get rested on some of the easy fixtures just when you were counting on a CS, especially if it comes just ahead of CL.

Time and performance will tell. Dzeko has been poor most of pre-season and Jovetic can play behind the striker, out-wide, leading the line.

It will be hard to drop a player that keeps scoring.

He is nailed on for me GW1.

I dont think Pellegrini will rush him back after the stop/start mess in the 2nd half of last season, especially if others perform. Jovetic will play as long as he produces. Though I could easily see City going single striker some games or Jovetic being an obvious sub target at 60-70.

Trying to fill my last defensive slot. Had Wisdom for a while, but now seems unlikely to play long-term:

    Krul/Foster
    Debuchy/Evans/Davies/????/Moore
    Sanchez/Cesc/Mata/Lamela/Siggy
    Roo/Jovetic/Bojan

Could stick with a 4M bench player and keep 0.5M for flexibility, or spend the full 4.5M and allow for some rotation.

Everybody seems to have forgotten about City!

    - They are defending champions
    - Scored 102 goals last year
    - Whilst only conceding 37 goals
    - Strengthened in key areas CB and CM (Mangala and Fernando)
    - Got real cover at RB and GK now so Hart and Zabaleta don't have to play every game

+1 this. I dont think anyone has forgotten City, rather we all remember the difference Kun makes.

Aguero in form: aguero and silva get points

Aguero out of form/injured: silva doesnt get points and then YYT, Nasri, Dzeko, Jovetic, Navas, Negredo, etc all participate.

I don't think anyone's really forgotten but the squad is so strong now that no-one is nailed on in defence or attack, except:

Yaya who is just so expensive for a player whose returns really have to regress
Silva and Aguero who are both made of gossamer threads and optimism

Yeah Cork was a great deputy to Wanyama.

I follow this team 24/7. Trust me, he has been bought for a Cb. He is a massive lad at 6ft 4 with experience at CB. Schneiderlin is unlikely to go but if he went, he would be replaced by a genuine quality midfielder with an established reputation as a CM or DM. Schneiderlin trained today and Spurs are no where near his valuation, 10m vs 27m. We don't sell our best players on the cheap.

I suspect both could rotate in and out.

Rio can't play 38GWs and will need rest - I recon 1 in 3. Then Clint will get a sniff.

            I am thinking the same

sterling seems to be heavily involved in pool's attack likely to assist many, win penalties

mata was improved from last year but in pre season united scored like 20 goals and mata scored just 2 (one deflection) and 2 assists, this makes me lean towards sterling but then no European matches thus no rotation risk for mata (only kagawa threat)

If I don't, I won't have any Liverpool. Now that is mad.

Already have Rooney and Evens and not a great fan of maxing out on three from one team, in case you need to get someone in asap (without a hit)

Sterling looks like he might explode this season.

I've been comparing Fabregas with Hazard with Costa using the comparison matrix on Squawka.
Here's some stats for each of them from last season (all stats after games/minutes played are averages per game) :

    Games/minutes played:
    Fabregas: 36/2466
    Hazard: 35/2890
    Costa: 35/2957

    Key Passes:
    Fabregas: 1.25
    Hazard: 2.43
    Costa: 1.2

    Assists:
    Fabregas: 0.36
    Hazard: 0.2
    Costa: 0.09

    Chances created:
    Fabregas: 1.61
    Hazard: 2.63
    Costa: 1.29

    Goals scored:
    Fabregas: 0.22
    Hazard: 0.4
    Costa: 0.77

    Total shots:
    Fabregas: 1.44
    Hazard: 2.09
    Costa: 3.09

Of course, it is important to bear in mind the difference between the Premier League and La Liga .

You cant compare Fab to Haz if you dont use stat per 90M. As you see, Fab scored more goals (despite playing less), yet all his stats are lower. It is just because Fab came on as a sub v often.

    DDG - Gilks

    Rooney - Costa - Bojan

Is it just me or is Bojan an excuse for people so they can spend more money elsewhere?

    * He's reverse OOP
    * A poor finisher
    * Failed in various easier leagues
    * Even though he is on set pieces, very far from a specialist.
    * He's incredibly slow

His only strengths are dribbling, one-two's and though balls, which don't net you many points.

bite the bullet. planning transfers is bad enough never mind for defenders, and both will do well after GW1. Not to mention Clyne could nick an assist and Ward could frustrate arsenal.

I would like to start with Dzeko over Costa, potentially leaving the money in the bank as an option. The problem is, if I have 2.0 in the bank and no mids higher than 9mil, and Yaya explodes GW1, I know where that money's going to go before Costa's even kicked a ball. Back Costa or cave and go for Yaya over Ramsey?

Ok I admit Liverpool & arsenal are much better covered by
Ramsey & sturridge than Sterling & Giroud

    But £3.5m better ???

This would criple defence & mean something like an Eriksen to Siggy

On the plus side makes it easier to switch sturridge (or Rooney my other striker ) to Aguero once fit
    And I want Aguero

Worth the destruction of my team ?

If I pick 3 arsenal mids and they play away at Cheksea I'm most likely in for a bad week

If Liverpool put 6 past some bottom of the table team , if have sterling or sturridge I'd hope to have a peice of it and not lose to much ground
