634x258 Pre-Season

Our series of โ€œSleeperโ€ articles, focussing on players who failed to live up to our expectations in the previous season, got underway with a look at Theo Walcottโ€™s prospects earlier this summer. Next up, we turn our attentions to Juan Mata, who, in his first two seasons with Chelsea in the top-flight, cemented his place as one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. Serving up 162 points in his debut campaign in 2011/12, the Spaniard stepped up another level the following year and, after a slow start, eclipsed Eden Hazard as the top scoring Blues midfielder by 212 points to 190:

The arrival of Jose Mourinho last summer changed all that, though. With the Blues boss opting for Oscar behind a lone striker, Mata struggled to make any impact from out on the right – starting 11 of Chelseaโ€™s opening 22 league matches and emerging from the bench on a couple of occasions, he mustered a mere two assists, with his new manager somewhat critical of the playmakerโ€™s work-rate.

From creative lynchpin to peripheral figure, Mata was offloaded by Mourinho in last winterโ€™s transfer window as former United boss David Moyes turned to the Spaniard with arguably his last throw of the dice.

Whilst the new boyโ€™s displays werenโ€™t enough to save the Scot from the axe, they were, nonetheless, quick to capture our Fantasy attention. With his confidence restored from a consistency of starts, the record signing served up six goals, five assists and 15 bonus points in just 15 appearances to sign off the 2013/14 as one of the most in-form midfielders around.

The Prospects

Further analysis of Mataโ€™s United stats bode well for the season ahead. From the point of his arrival in Gameweek 23, only two midfielders โ€“ Yaya Toure and Steven Gerrard โ€“ scored more often. Toure notched nine times, with four spot-kicks boosting his tally, whilst six of Gerrardโ€™s eight strikes over the period were also as a result of converted penalties. In terms of goals from open play, then, Mata was joint-top with Raheem Sterling amongst midfielders during that period.

The arrival of Louis van Gaal has enhanced the Spaniardโ€™s Fantasy prospects over the summer. With United now lining up in a 3-4-1-2 formation, Mata has been handed his preferred role in โ€œthe holeโ€ behind a front two and has scored twice during his sideโ€™s unbeaten US tour.

Mataโ€™s arrival at Old Trafford looks to have finally afforded Fantasy managers a viable option in the United midfield. For two or three seasons now, the men in the middle have failed to make their mark and weโ€™ve been forced to turn our attentions to Wayne Rooney or Robin Van Persie as the likeliest source of attacking returns but the little Spaniardโ€™s Premier League record underlines that, if assured of a starting role, he will deliver โ€“ his 2012/13 tally of 212 points is still superior to Hazardโ€™s high of 202, recorded last season. In spite of that, Mata comes in at 9.0 to the Belgianโ€™s 10.0, suggesting he could be undervalued by FPL this time around.

The opening schedule is beneficial, too. United have been afforded the chance to quickly hit the ground running โ€“ showdowns with Swansea, Sunderland, Burnley, QPR, Leicester, West Ham, Everton and West Brom in the first eight Gameweeks could barely be more favourable and with Robin van Persie yet to feature in pre-season, Mata looks a strong double-up option alongside Wayne Rooney for those willing to splash the cash on the Red Devils from the outset.

So after todays FFS discussions, it all really boils down to:

    A) (Roo Costa Studge) + (Ramsey Mata £6m)

    or

    B) (Roo+Costa/Studge + £6m) + (Ramsey Mata Fabs/Haz)

I think initially go with A, but if Costa looks like he might be not as prolific as some hope with a quick change to B in as few transfers as possible.

Anyone spent some thought on Coutinho vs. Sterling?

Easy to go with Sterling I know, but with suarez gone I feel Coutinho will be pushed up as a key attacking threat.

Plus who thinks Coutinho has more end product?

Similar group of players to me. As I can't pick a 3rd striker I've sacraficed that spot for Zamora at 4.5m (3rd bench slot) and gone for this:

      Eriksen, Ramsey, Mata, Sterling, Sigurdsson
      Rooney, Costa, Zamora

Playing 3-5-2, worth looking at imo.

Dzeko/Jov/Giroud GW1 then Bony GW2-GW7 then Lukaku GW8-20 gives you:

    new/CPL,BUR,WBA,che,SOT,sun,NEW,AVL,bur,SWA,sun,WHM,tot,HUL,mci,QPR,sot,STO,new,hul

Pretty tasy, no? Two proper toughies at City and Chelsea but the ease in many of the others more than makes up for that.

Gives nice cover to the problematic 8-9m striker area with only 2 trfrs up to the window.

Captaincy is the issue, I'd never want to captain Dzeko or Jovetic with gametime doubts. Giroud might be just as bad this year.

For me this goes alongside Rooney and Costa so they will almost always get the band and certainly in GW1 Rooney over Dzeko/Jov/Giroud is a no brainer.

would i be better going with:

      A: 5.5mil + 4mil defenders
      or
      B: 5mil + 4.5mil

i'm settled on Vlaar, Naylor & PvA as my other 3, i'll be rotating on fixtures

      Hi guys,

New member looking for a RMT..

      Foster/Krul
      Caulker Debuchy JEvans (Vlaar Wisdom)
      Henderson Mata Ramsey Hazard (Siggy)
      Costa Rooney Bojan

I'm pretty satisfied cause I feel this squad can be rotated to a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2 if necessary. Do you feel I could improve in any way?

You'd be leaving a fair bit of cash on your bench each week but I quite like it. Leaves you fairly agile to respond to good form or injuries in the first few weeks.

Anyone reckon that with Legia out of the Champion's League, St. Pats could get a Europa place instead?

Ben Dinnery thinks Kyle Walker is probably weeks or a month away from fitness:

      https://twitter.com/BenDinnery/status/498773358641942528

Kyle Naughton @ 4.5 versus (whu, QPR, LIV, sun) looks like a better short-term punt than Chambers to me.

I played against Kyle Naughton in a Sheffield 6 a side match this summer. True story. They beat us 8-2 (playing without a keeper) and he scored 5 goals. I refuse to pick him on the principal of him being the most outrageous ringer I've ever witnessed.

I think so. There's always a valid objection to picking someone with a known short lifespan - you're effectively wasting a transfer down the line.

But if you don't mind doing that, he's better than Chambers.
