634x258 Pre-Season

Our series of “Sleeper” articles, focussing on players who failed to live up to our expectations in the previous season, got underway with a look at Theo Walcott’s prospects earlier this summer. Next up, we turn our attentions to Juan Mata, who, in his first two seasons with Chelsea in the top-flight, cemented his place as one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. Serving up 162 points in his debut campaign in 2011/12, the Spaniard stepped up another level the following year and, after a slow start, eclipsed Eden Hazard as the top scoring Blues midfielder by 212 points to 190:

The arrival of Jose Mourinho last summer changed all that, though. With the Blues boss opting for Oscar behind a lone striker, Mata struggled to make any impact from out on the right – starting 11 of Chelsea’s opening 22 league matches and emerging from the bench on a couple of occasions, he mustered a mere two assists, with his new manager somewhat critical of the playmaker’s work-rate.

From creative lynchpin to peripheral figure, Mata was offloaded by Mourinho in last winter’s transfer window as former United boss David Moyes turned to the Spaniard with arguably his last throw of the dice.

Whilst the new boy’s displays weren’t enough to save the Scot from the axe, they were, nonetheless, quick to capture our Fantasy attention. With his confidence restored from a consistency of starts, the record signing served up six goals, five assists and 15 bonus points in just 15 appearances to sign off the 2013/14 as one of the most in-form midfielders around.

The Prospects

Further analysis of Mata’s United stats bode well for the season ahead. From the point of his arrival in Gameweek 23, only two midfielders – Yaya Toure and Steven Gerrard – scored more often. Toure notched nine times, with four spot-kicks boosting his tally, whilst six of Gerrard’s eight strikes over the period were also as a result of converted penalties. In terms of goals from open play, then, Mata was joint-top with Raheem Sterling amongst midfielders during that period.

The arrival of Louis van Gaal has enhanced the Spaniard’s Fantasy prospects over the summer. With United now lining up in a 3-4-1-2 formation, Mata has been handed his preferred role in “the hole” behind a front two and has scored twice during his side’s unbeaten US tour.

Mata’s arrival at Old Trafford looks to have finally afforded Fantasy managers a viable option in the United midfield. For two or three seasons now, the men in the middle have failed to make their mark and we’ve been forced to turn our attentions to Wayne Rooney or Robin Van Persie as the likeliest source of attacking returns but the little Spaniard’s Premier League record underlines that, if assured of a starting role, he will deliver – his 2012/13 tally of 212 points is still superior to Hazard’s high of 202, recorded last season. In spite of that, Mata comes in at 9.0 to the Belgian’s 10.0, suggesting he could be undervalued by FPL this time around.

The opening schedule is beneficial, too. United have been afforded the chance to quickly hit the ground running – showdowns with Swansea, Sunderland, Burnley, QPR, Leicester, West Ham, Everton and West Brom in the first eight Gameweeks could barely be more favourable and with Robin van Persie yet to feature in pre-season, Mata looks a strong double-up option alongside Wayne Rooney for those willing to splash the cash on the Red Devils from the outset.

Doosra "I'm sorry, I don't like this very much.
    Luis - may not start
Debuchy - YC waiting to happen
Chester - rather have Davies or Rosenior
Midfield is more in hope than expectation, Ramsey apart. (Guys midfield included Hazard and Mata)
    Costa - unproven
    Banjo - really?"

I was referring to the midfield AS A WHOLE. I know detail is not your thing ...

Hazard has had almost no pre-Season, and is carrying weight.

If that was the case, it wasn't clear due to the "Ramsey apart" comment. It made Hazard and Mata sound like questionable picks.

Well, they are as I have just outlined.

There is no guarantee that Mata will be selected, as it may be that Rooney and he are vying for one spot.

For all that, I have Mata.

an educated guess, if nothing else.

Mertesacker only joined up with the squad yesterday, whilst Chambers looked alright at center half vs City on Sunday.

Arsenal also have 2 CL games (including a trip to Turkey) sandwiched in the first 2-3 gameweeks. So maybe Mertesacker features in those, instead?

31 goals and 25 odd assists plus indirectly responsible for another 15 odd goals through indirect fk's which he was fouled for and generally causing mayhem to backlines trying to prevent him scoring leading to other attackers garnering less defensive attention and allowing them to pick off more goals than would otherwise be possible.

Thats 80+ goals they need to replace not just one player and they have hardly bought a single player that makes their first 11 better than it was last year

You've lost the Player of the season, of course it will have an affect. When we lost RVP, we still played good football, but we did struggle for goals.

Arsenal scored more goals in the season RVP left than they did in his last season with them. While this undermines my argument above a little I don't think Arsenal were AS reliant on RVP for goals as Liverpool were

Im thinking Chambers could actually be a good idea

    1) once he has played his game and hopefully got 6 points the casuals will be all over him, he could be a decent price riser
2 gives time to assess other teams and allows time for the transfer market to settle down, so can then swap for which ever 4.5 or 4 looks good

If he gets a CS then it is worth it. If you add the transfer on in addition to another for a hit, that means he basically got you 2 points. The player you would have started with, say, Naylor, would have got that or less. Chambers bags you a profit too so its basically a free 0.1M

Considering dropping Fabregas to bring in Mata

    1) 2 articles on Mata in 24 hours have convinced me he's worth having for loads of reasons in those articles e.g. fixtures, stats, pre-season form etc
    2) Fabregas might be an assist the assist player
    3) Don't want to drop Ramsey for him
    4) Don't want to downgrade Costa and whole defence to upgrade Siggy to get Mata.

Had Fabregas in my team from the off and sod's law says if I drop him he'll have a blinder GW1 and price will become unaffordable..

During his first spell in England, Fabregas became known as one of the league’s best creative midfielders and between 2006–07 and 2010–11, created the most chances in the topflight leagues of England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France.

The Spaniard provided 98 assists during his time with Arsenal and continued that impressive record in Spain with Barcelona by setting up 48 goals – and he can put them away himself, too. Fabregas scored 28 times in 96 La Liga appearances for Barca and is one of the most dangerous midfielders around

I think PvA is the better pick (more attacking), but it's worth bearing in mind that Poyet has been trying to sign Vergini since he was managing Brighton. He clearly rates him very highly which might just give him a slight edge, as does his versatility - he can play LB, RB and CB.

Still a bit lost though feel confident with the decision of Rooney, Sturridge and 8.5 striker up top now - rest has to follow suit - lol

    Would you rather have:

    a) Fabregas + Young
    b) Nasri + Siggy

Nasri could be Eriksen/Sterling/Caz but Fabregas opens up more possibilies later (Walcott, Özil, Silva).

Midfield would be Mata, Fab, Ramsey and Young atm. Young much too punty?

I could be wrong but Young isn't that nailed on IMO. I like the rest of your midfield and don't want to touch it---Your FWDs are a no-go which leaves shaving 0.5M off the defense to upgrade Young to a 6.0M MID.

A punt still has to be guaranteed to start and play the game right? How else will he score the points you banking on by risking his selection?

Young has played nearly every game in Utds pre-season and is the right wingback of choice for Van Gaal in every report I'm reading... plus Valencia is now injured, which is what Luke Shaw back into the picture in that role anyway.
