634x258 Fixtures

After examining the beneficiaries of the forthcoming fixture schedule in yesterday’s article, today it’s the turn of the less fortunate sides. A number of last season’s high flyers have testing schedules over the next four to six Gameweeks that could counsel caution over their Fantasy assets.

Man City

“involvement

The champions hammered all comers at the Etihad last season and will be hoping to maintain that form as a couple of title rivals pay visit. With a dressing room full of world-class talent, Manuel Pellegrini’s outfit could well emerge from their upcoming fixture list with a barrel-full of goals and a pocket-full of clean sheets. But history says caution may still be required when faced with (LIV, ars, CHE) in the next four: of those same three fixtures last season, City won one, drew one and lost one, scoring just four goals and conceding in each game.

Anyone eyeing up David Silva after his goal against Newcastle may want to hold fire until easier fodder heaves into view, and a gamble on Sergio Aguero’s nascent fitness seems similarly risky. Likewise, with so much potential for rotation in defence, looking elsewhere may well be the safest option, at least for the time being. Gameweek 6, however, is a different story. A glorious period of fixtures will prove extremely tempting for Fantasy managers and many will doubtless be trying to figure out how to squeeze two or even three pricey Citizens into their squads.

Leicester

“involvement

A well-earned point against Everton signalled a bright start for Nigel Pearson’s side but there are tougher tests to come: the Foxes prepare to face Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United in the next four Gameweeks. Liam Moore got the nod to provide Fantasy managers with a precious 4.0 budget starter in defence, but few owners will be keen to start him over this schedule. Chris Wood came off the bench to grab a goal but is unlikely to tempt much investment, though Leonardo Ulloa was on a few radars following a successful campaign with Brighton. These fixtures suggest monitoring the Argentine and his strike partner, David Nugent, before investing, however. The Foxes’ schedule does clear markedly from Gameweek 7, an ideal time to invest if any of their players manage to impress in the interim period.

Aston Villa

“involvement

Touted for relegation by no fewer than nine of the scouts in our season’s predictions, Paul Lambert steered the Villains to a narrow victory over Stoke. The next two fixtures – home ties with Newcastle and Hull – look winnable too. Following that the Midlands club will need to batten down the hatches as they face a hurricane of title-chasing opponents in the shape of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and City. Of course, after last season’s disappointments, few Villa players are gracing Fantasy Watchlists, let alone our squads, but the 4.0-priced Alan Hutton’s clean sheet in the opening Gameweek has caught the eye of some. Anyone holding him can make hay while the sun shines on the next two fixtures but clean sheets look improbable in the subsequent five.

BE WARY OF

Everton
Their winless record in pre-season was carried over into the opener as the Toffees struggled to close out a valiant Leicester. Such insipid form does not bode well considering the step up in quality of their upcoming opponents – encounters against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man United in the next six Gameweeks suggest that Roberto Martinez will have his work cut out to ensure a favourable start to the league season, particularly with Europa league commitments to fulfil.

Last season’s hugely successful campaign has had the inevitable effect on the prices of the Everton defence, with even youngster John Stones being elevated to the upper mid-price bracket. With such hard-hitting adversaries on the agenda, investment looks too pricy for most. Aidan McGeady and Steven Naismith, on the other hand, seem very kindly priced and may be ready to step up this season, particularly with the expected long-term injury to Ross Barkley. However, even their most ardent suitors would surely admit that they’re likely to struggle for points in the short term. It looks wise to use the forthcoming fixtures to weigh up their likely pitch time before committing.

West Ham
A match of two cards eventually resulted in a loss for Sam Allardyce as his side were finally undone in stoppage time by Spurs. Traditionally, the Hammers’ appeal to Fantasy managers is limited to their hardy and well priced defence but Allardyce’s forays into the transfer market have so far suggested an increased focus on attacking prowess. Enner Valencia, Mauro Zarate, and Diafra Sakho are all hoping to announce themselves in the Premier League – the former catching some Fantasy eyes after a decent showing at the World Cup. But with a middling set of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks, including Liverpool and Man United and – crucially – only one truly tempting home game (QPR), points potential at either end of the pitch looks limited. Again, Fantasy managers are advised to use these fixtures for reconnaissance before the weather turns clement for the Hammers around Gameweek 7.

Liverpool
The win over Southampton was hardly convincing, as Liverpool attempt to come to terms with life without Luis Suarez. They may need to get up to speed more quickly if they are to start the season with much needed momentum, which won’t be helped by their next two fixtures against Man City and Tottenham. Investment in double-digit scorer Raheem Sterling has been strong this week but he will tested against those opponents, as will Daniel Sturridge. Brendan Rodgers’ defence picked up where it left off last season – conceding – and as such look unlikely to shut out City and Spurs, meaning the heavily backed Dejan Lovren may need to rely on his goal-scoring prowess to atone for a lack of clean sheets. However, the skies clear markedly from Gameweek 4 as the Reds embark upon a far stronger schedule.

I'm get tick sick of United fans saying they would not pay 50m for Real reject di maria when they were not prepared to cough up that much for vidal. What they need to realise is it's not about what they would cough up for vidal.

United fans thinking vidal would leave a champions league club and the biggest club in Italy for a team not even in Europe and by no means certain to be in the Champions league next season just shows how conceited they are imo.

The sooner United fans realise they can't sign top players playing for top clubs that actually want to retain them the sooner they will start to realise where they actually stand in the pecking order now.

We spent the last 20 years with Liverpool fans crying out for big name signings, arguing that they were one of the biggest teams in the world and now I fear we are in for the same from conceited United fans unfortunately.

He is a reject as in they don't want him anymore? Is that not the definition of a "reject?

Do you honestly think if real wanted to keep him United would have a chance if getting him? I can't remember any player choosing United over Real ever, even when United were a big club in the Champions league and contesting the premier league

I think Real do want to keep him, Ancellotti REALLY does anyway... but we need the money after stupidly splashing out again.

It is nit up to ancelotti though is it? The sporting director/president decides who comes and goes and they were looking to offload di maria last summer never mind this summer.

I get your point but this is what happens to any fans of a big club when they go through a tough time...but yeah as you say with ucl man united will struggle to get these players in...they need to rebuild with some astute buys (like rojo for example)

real madrid reject is not how I would class di maria...he is one of the best midfielders in the world, and madrid are silly not to appreciate what he gives their team, but with the signings they make, these things (like ozil transfer) are almost inevitable...shame really

      Interesting post Dino.

I can see why you are annoyed of United fans speaking in the way you say.

I think any club that has had success to the level United have had over the last 20 years will have fans that are vocal in this way once things start to go horribly wrong.

Most United fans don’t think this way IMO, the fans I speak to anyway.

They accept that our stock is low at the moment for obvious reasons, having said that I still see us at the moment as a top four club and should be able to attract players of a top four caliber.

We have the money, we have the resources and we have the name and history to call ourselves a big club to a certain degree (but not the best club in the world, I cringe every time I hear that).

The problem I think is the people at the top, the likes of Woodward. They have made Manchester United a ‘laughing stock’ these last two summers.

They have made us appear like a club with loads of cash to spend who are awful at conducting business and desperate for new players. Not exactly the message we want to give to the selling clubs, the players we want or the players we have at the moment.

The fact that Di Maria is a reject for Real or not is regardless of the point really, So was Robben when he went to Bayen and Sniejder when he went to Inter. Di Maria is a class player and most teams would be better off having him in their team.

It would be a welcome signing from most United fans and I would be happy if it happens though If I had it my way we should be concentrating on defense not attack.

Excellent post Hickey and I agree with most of it.

As I explained above being a Real reject is no shameful thing and I do rate di maria. My point with him being a reject is that United need to find players other top clubs don't want as top players at top clubs won't risk their careers on United getting back into the top 4 again this year and being a champions league club again soon. If bayern or another top CL club want di maria then United have no chance with him imo.

As you say Robben, sneijder and Ozil were all real rejects too and we're top class players so if United do get him it will be a great signing for them.

The intimation from united fans that the only reason United are not getting vidal is because they did not bid enough and if they had he would jump at the chance to leave a great club like juventus with an equally illustrious history as United is what was galling me more than anything about di maria.

Just see your other comments sorry.

It depends on the players motivating factor to join a particular club but yes I agree it makes it a lot harder for us to compete against the bigger clubs not being in the champion’s league.

We will struggle at the moment to compete with the likes of City, Chelsea and maybe even Arsenal never mind the likes of Madrid and Bayern. If we are honest it’s been that way for a long time with the top European clubs, the EPL in general does not have the same pull it had 10 years ago.

I still think we can compete with the rest of the top EPL teams including Liverpool though so it’s realist to set our sights right now at a top four finish. That’s not to say its a given and right now Liverpool look ahead of us but we should be in the mix.

It’s been obvious for a while now that the Vidal move is a none starter, the noises he’s made is that he’s happy at Juventus and why wouldn't he be.

The disillusioned fans tend to be the most vocal but I wouldn't say there the majority.

Fair play Hickey you seem to know exactly where you're team stands and if the vociferous minority of Utd fans were half as clued in then I'm sure the neutral fans would be a lot more supportive of Utd in their current plight.

Good look this season with ye're quest to return to the top 4 again. Fwiw I think spurs will prove your stiffest competition for the top 4 following the Suarez sale.

Community question for some of the older users like myself...

I haven't really been around since the new upvote system was implemented here in the forum. What impact has this had on the flow of everything? Do people actually upvote content?

I for one have not bothered to upvote anything unless it is really really good. Anyone feel the same?

      Seemless 🙂
Things have changed quite a bit since voting first came in.
The main purpose for voting is to help when "sorting by discussion rating" making things voted on being seen 1st.

I'm still not sure why the sorting by discussion rated is the default setting? Is it because the top voted posts aren't relevant to all users? I mean, I guess it takes a click of a button to sort that way, but I think upvoting good content would be more encouraged if the thread was already sorted by best content first.

I mean, all it would take is for you to look at the time and date. This doesn't change the relevancy of the content. If you're having a conversation with yourself with the date and time of everything provided, that's you're own damn fault 😀

We wouldn't be having this conversation now with your system.
Time sequence is the default as that makes common sense. People who want to find upvoted stuff just need to change the filter, rather than being forced to.

I disagree. I see you posted 3 minutes ago on a top rated post, I can assume you're interested in the topic and I have a high chance of catching you since you shouldn't be too far away. You are also notified of replies as an option yes?

If the default setting now is the default setting we had years ago...then there is no point to the upvote system imo since nothing has really changed. I am not really encouraged to upvote as 5 upvotes was enough for this to be a sticky topic or whatever when I hit the sort button.

Maybe it's laziness to sort or maybe my disagreement with the explanations you gave me, but I don't see the point. The possibilities are there, but the execution is lacking....imo. No disrespect meant to you or this site though!

This topic would start on 0 votes so wouldn't be accessible or would be somewhere back in the pack. Your post would have been missed by nearly everyone as upvoted posts would be ahead in the sorting process. I have never used the "notify of replies" option & I'm not sure how many do. I simply bookmark a link & find it later if interested.

A sticky topic could have 0/1 upvotes. Could be a simple question where all the great discussion is below. Those who want a quick look at the good stuff(voted on) just change the setting then they are set.

Guess we see things in different ways. I also see it from an admin prospective whereas you haven't been around much for the past year.

Hope to see you around more. 🙂

I assumed it would be a lot more widely used than it has been. You rarely see an upvote to be honest. I do feel its a little hard to see. Especially on an iphone. I remember this 'Homecrowd' being muted a couple of years ago which seemed to take an age to arrive. As far as i could see it consisted of up votes, down votes (which were removed becasue people were actually using them god forbid), and reputation levels (which were artificially inflated for mods, which didn't make much sense)

I can't see why downvotes were taken out. I think they'd come in handy. So the reputation idea has been thrown out the window, yes? That is also a shame. Because unless you're a regular, you'd never know of people like Attila the Bum, Doos, Christina...etc...quality posters. Lots of terrible advice given here, it's good to know where the reliable sources are sometimes.

Were they hideously abused? I can't imagine it got that bad, I've never seen an upvote/downvote system be super abused before. Crazy. You're right, but I'll take my chances with a poster who reasons well in his advice and has some experience than someone who does not, even if his advice is wrong from time to time. Personal opinion I guess.

Yes, I thought that was the whole point, that we'd have a 'Reddit' like system where good content would always float on top when we entered the thread. I guess that is still the case from what I've gathered from the replies, if you sort it accordingly. I just figured it'd be the default setting I guess. There were absolutely CLASSIC posts that always got buried in the comments back in the day.

I should use the sorting button more often then.

You can sort comments by stickies or discussion rating / up votes. If you up vote posts you like it helps the mods find them and change the best ones into stickies or hot topics. So please use it when you like a post.

Looks like people are using it for that, though. And no down vote button only helps in this regard. And I like it that way - users should be drawn to a post if a lot of people are agreeing with it, and see subsequent qualitative comments without having to scroll down past a ream of '+1s'. Makes it much easier.

Hey guys! Any chance of some quick help for my GW2 team? Pretty sure I'm able to save the transfer comfortably but I want to try and push on from my extremely lucky GW1 and try get into the top 100 so I need your help 😀

Am I mental for going with Tadic as captain?
I feel that Chelsea could go 2 or 3 up and then shut up shop, sharing the points around the team, but Tadic will be the main man for Saints against a very loose West Brom, but there's also Siggy (I don't buy the whole only good away from home theory)..

And would you start Caulker when he's playing back at White Hart Lane?

    Given(NEW)

    Ivanovic(LEI) - Chester(STO) - Clyne(WBA)

    Cesc(LEI) (VC) - Ramsey(eve) - Tadic(WBA) (C) - Lamela(QPR) - Siggy(BUR)

    Costa(LEI) - Rooney(sun)

    SUBS --- Begovic(hul) - Naismith(ARS) - Caulekr(tot) - Moore(che)

Yep probably my best ever, if I had played Siggy (1st benched) over Lamela, and Clyne (2nd benched) over Caulker, I would be ahead of everyone in the world by 6 points 😛

I think I might actually leave that decision up to a coin toss and fate! Risky either way, tough to call.

Imo, you need to transfer out Lamela. If there is a way of doing that to Sterling ...

That would be the ideal move, but I was 0.5 short of doing Lamela -> Sterling and I didn't think it was worth it to take a hit and take out Ivanovic yet to free up funds, Ivan is probably going next week though so that's when Cabella or De Jong or Sterling come in for that Lamela position!

Thats the problem with backing goal scoring defenders at bottom table clubs. You never know when they will score, they hardly keep any clean sheets and when they do score you might have them on the bench because they'd be part of a defensive rotation anyway.

If I were a Liverpool fan I'd be extremely excited about Balotelli, he'll be cheap, he's a bit more humble/mature (albeit not by much) than he was at City, he's an internationally renowned striker and he's still very, very young.

Plus he can lead the line by himself like Sturridge so you'd genuinely have a great depth up front for once.

Sturridge can't be relied on to play 60-70 games...and they need to allow for either him or Lambert getting injured...2 strikers just isn't enough especially if they want to play 2 up top sometimes

but I don't think it leaves Sturridge in a different position to an Aguero or many others...some rotation is certain

Liverpool's starting XI if they sign Balotelli will be pretty good. Nice depth in the squad too:

        41212 Diamond
        Balotelli Sturridge
        Sterling
        Coutinho Henderson
        Gerrard
        Enrique Skrtel Lovren Manquillo
        Mignolet

Subs/Reserves: Jones, Markovic, Can, Flanagan, Moreno, Johnson, Lallana, Suso, Sakho, Agger, Coates, Allen, Lucas, Toure, Ibe, Borini, Lambert, Assaidi, etc.

I can see Borini, Lucas, Agger and Assaidi leaving this window, with Coates and Ibe going on loan.

He seems like a Yes man when it comes to his players. I don't see him as a harsh coach at all, neither a super critical individual. Wenger isn't either, but he commands respect by being an absolutely brilliant. Also, shutting the door on Favorite Son Fabregas takes massive balls. Which he has and which are also larger than I thought.

This is all why he's meant to be out of the running for the Palace job so some of it must be from his end. Plus, if it had been one-sided, why would Moody communicate to him in certain ways if they would make Mackay uncomfortable or offend him.

All sounds pretty damning to me. It's a lot for the Mail to merely fabricate and it did seem strange when Mackay randomly dropped the law suit against Tan.

Mata at fault for the first. Ki was his man. Fletcher for the second as he should've been marking Siggy. Those blaming the CBs are just making blanket assumptions.

Well top teams had an average of about 8 pens last season and LVG is very attacking, I think that is a reasonable estimation, and he looked good at the WC, I think only injuries may make him bad value.

I think that Azpilicueta has the RB role and that he is only deputizing at LB (and Ivan then at RB) until Mourinho deems Luis comfortable enough with the league and the squad to take over the LB starting role. At this point Ivanovic, Terry and Cahill will share the CB spots with Cahill likely owning a regular spot and the other 2 rotating based on need as it pertains to the relationship between the league and the CL. Azpilicueta is one of Mourinho's favorite players and we know how he tends to treat his favorites (and treats those he doesn't like [for example certain Real Madrid players]).

      Thoughts?

with a striker, he doesn't need his wingers getting forward as much and with his wingers not needing to bomb forward as much he doesn't need his fullbacks to do it either. I think that Azpi is a better RB now that they have Costa than Ivanovic is as Azpi is better in defense

You honestly believe that Azpi, the guy that is comfortable at both RB and LB won't be the one rotated? Can't see Mourinho constantly changing that CB partnership whereas the LB role looks like it may well be. Just can't see Ivan being rotated often at all if I'm honest.
