Having lost striker Shane Long to Southampton earlier this month, Steve Bruce concluded his search for a replacement on a busy transfer deadline day. The Hull boss wrapped up the transfer of Abel Hernandez from Italian side Palermo for a club record fee of around £10 million and, after the 24-year-old signed a three year deal with the Tigers, Bruce immediately talked up the new boy’s prospects:

“Abel is a fantastic signing and highlights just how far the club has come in such a short space of time. He is an exciting talent and, like myself, I’m sure the supporters can’t wait to see him in action.”

The History

Hernandez’ career began in his native country Uruguay, where the centre forward – nicknamed ‘La Joya’ (or ‘The Jewel’) – rose through the ranks at Central Espanyol before being signed by rival side Penarol in the summer of 2008, at the age of 17. His strong performances as a regular starter for the Uruguayan club saw Palermo come calling a half a year later.

During his first season in Italy, Hernandez starred in the Palermo Under-19 squad who secured the famous Trofeo Giacinto Facchetti for youth teams in Serie A and B, and went on to make his first team debut. Across his four and a half seasons with the Sicilian side, Hernandez formed a formidable partnership with compatriot Edinson Cavani and experienced a loss in the final of the Coppa Italia, relegation to Serie B and then promotion back to the top flight last season, notching a total of 33 goals and 11 assists in 100 appearances.

On the international stage, nine goals in 11 appearances for Uruguay’s Under-20 side earned Hernandez his first senior cap in July 2010 at the age of 19, in which he instantaneously announced himself with a goal to earn a 2-0 friendly victory over Angola. A career highlight came in the 2013 Confederations Cup, when the frontman grabbed four goals in his team’s 8-0 group stage victory over Tahiti. In total, ‘La Joya’ has tallied seven goals in 14 international appearances, though he has continually struggled to earn a regular starting role ahead of the world-class talents of Cavani and Luis Suarez.

The Prospects
With a hectic final day of ins and outs now behind him, Bruce has some considerable tinkering to do before his side face West Ham after the international break. The acquisitions of Mohamed Diame, Gaston Ramirez and Hatem Ben Arfa will give the Hull boss plenty to ponder over in the middle of the park, and could result in a very different looking Hull team taking to the field in two weekends’ time from the one that lost out to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Hernandez’s prospects, on the other hand, don’t look so much of a mystery, as the record signing is bound to start alongside Nikica Jelavic in a front two, hence pitting the pair of forwards against each other for our attentions.

The knock-on effect from Hernandez’s arrival does not, however, bode well for a number of others in Hull’s ranks. Tom Ince had, until now, offered an out-of-position differential playing up top with Jelavic, but the young Englishman’s security of starts now look dubious. The 5.5-priced midfielder could drop in behind the front two if Bruce does continue with the 3-4-1-2 formation seen in the first few weeks of the season, though Ramirez, Ben Arfa and Robbie Brady do now offer alternatives in that position.

Hence, with so much uncertainness surrounding Bruce’s midfield, it would seem to leave Hull’s front two as our only viable routes into the Tigers’ attacking set-up for now. Handed a 7.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, Hernandez is a full 1.0 dearer than Jelavic and, bearing in mind the latter also has two goals in his last two appearances to boost his appeal, it would be a leap of faith to splash out for his costlier team-mate right now.

Nonetheless, there’s no denying that the physical presence and goal scoring capabilities of both players as Bruce looks to address a scoring record which saw his side net just 38 times last term. With home fixtures against West Ham and Crystal Palace allied with a trip to Newcastle to come in the next four Gameweeks, the stage is certainly set for Hernandez to plunder the points from the off and perhaps offer Fantasy managers a new ‘Jewel’ in our frontline crowns. In all honesty, though, when the likes of Everton’s in-form Steven Naismith is available for 5.3 and Arsenal new boy Danny Welbeck can be snapped up for 6.9, Hernandez has a lot of convincing to do if he’s to become a genuine Fantasy force.

Out of the Man U front line, are we expecting Falcao to be the least susceptible to rotation?
    Rooney is captain.
But then RVP is LVG's best friend ever.

    So who to choose.

Rooney as captain I would assume would be rotated the least. But then again with not many games to play this season there shouldn't be that much rotation anyway

Falcao probably eased in but Rooney Falcao and RVP have to be ahead of Mata, unless system changes

Just a little baffled after reading this as part of the "frisking the fixtures, the strong," article.

Falcao, on the other hand, has no such question marks. Priced at 11.0 in the FPL game, the Colombian is an elite option whose arrival could trigger a raft of wildcards as Fantasy managers scramble to accommodate such an expensive option alongside other pricey performers.

So I wildcarded to play catch the value from the price rises (possibly a mistake as my team wasnt too bad).

Now i am considering a few different options for my 3rd (budget) striker.

    A) Ulloa. He looked really good in GW2&3 on MOTD. He would also rotate well with a possible mid priced Southampton midfielder (JWP or Scheiderlin)

    B) Naismith, The obvious bandwagon, i am not sure how long this bandwagon will last personally with eto and lukaku set to be the first choice options possibly. I currently have him in my team to catch the price rises from the previous days.

    C) Diouf, this would basically be a more short term orientated punt, although i am not convinced by his potential (biased as a Man U fan though).

    D) Welbeck. I have Ramsey already for Arsenal cover, but Welbeck looks too tempting to resist if he does indeed get the starting place up front for Arsenal. As a Man U fan I am disappointed we let him go to Arsenal and really don't want him to do well though (although I will take Falcao over Welbeck anyday)

    Opinions, thoughts, flames? 🙂

Rooney + Siggy for Costa + Tadic.

I probably just would, but I'd hold off till Spain have played. Costa will outscore Rooney (who COULD end up in mid) and Tadic might play in the hole and score the same as Siggy, but you don't want Costa injured!

Can't see RVP and Falcao starting together much, neither can play wide as they both lack pace and have low successful take on %. If LvG was to switch to a 4-3-3 only one could play.

If LvG sticks with two strikers I can't seen him playing both together either, they're too similar in terms of where they will want to operate. Neither is good with their back to goal and both want to run off the shoulder of the defender on to through balls or attack crosses.

Look at the world cup, LvG mainly played a 3-5-2 with Robben and RvP in the 2, he clearly liked the combination of one player who could receive the ball deeper and dribble past players to create chances/score and a player who's bread and butter was to peel off the shoulder of the defense to run onto long balls.

I expect RVP and Faclao to be rotated or RVP may be dropped until fully fit.

Also for LvG to play RvP and Falcao he would have to drop Mata or Rooney as only one can play in the 'hole'. I can't see him dropping Rooney and he will have been working with Mata for two weeks (as he didn't make the Spain squad). Seems unlikely he would drop the player who is the most fresh to accommodate a player who will only have arrived from America 3 days before the match and had a maximum of 2 training sessions with the team and manager.

I don't think Eto'o is necessarily a threat to Naismith; Barkley will be when fit but that is a while off. I would go Naismith for now but monitor Welbeck who could do very well but might get eased in by Wenger.

      Not C.

I think B is about to come in for a tiny bit of rotation as Everton have 7 games in like 22 days coming up, but he's the most likely to score.

D is a good punt, he could really turn it on in the same way Sturridge did when he was given a chance somewhere, but I don't think he's THAT good, just good. Probably underpriced, but could take a while to get going.

I like A tbh, he's being underlooked on here.

Thanks, yeah i also don't rate Diouf very highly at all.

I agree about Welbeck, for me (like Sturridge) he is not a world class striker and I think Arsenal payed too much for him, but he could do well enough at his price to warrant some fantasy attention until Giroud is back.

I think Ulloa is really somebody to watch, I like getting on bandwagons before they rise rather then jumping on later, which is why I am tempted to go for him over Naismith, but I really should probably just go for Naismith as its probably the sensible option. I am a little worried about Everton's upcoming tough run of fixtures though (by tough I mean lots of games).

Thanks for the responses though 🙂

A Ulloa isn't a long-termer but he's on a streak and has good fixtures ahead so could be a decent punt. Problem is you'll have him on your bench as he racks up the goals.

      C exactly samegoes for Diouf.

B and D are hot prospects - I'm flim-flamming over which one for my 3rd striker.

Why don't you rate Ulloa as a long termer? He seems to be the main target man for Leicester and if used in rotation with someone like Schneiderlin he could be decent for the long term. He also seems a pretty good finisher from what I have seen.

        1. andyinasia

Leicester have made a bright start, but promoted sides usually struggle and I don't see them scoring a ton of goals over the season, that's all.

Scheidy has scored his goal quota for the season too. He plays deeper, normally a 2-3 pointer, in my view.

I would try fit welbeck in over Ulloa. Yes he is more expensive but for a reason. He has premier league experience which will aid in him adapting to a new team faster and lastly, when he hits the ground running and you have Ulloa in your team he will be hard to upgrade to without taking a hit which you should avoid. If Ulloa keeps his good form and Welbeck plays poorly, it is a lot easier to downgrade

Budget wise I could afford either if I go for a budget (5.5ish) mid, so that's not such an issue. I agree the upgrading issue is something i worry about generally though, especially as this is my wildcard use.

Why would you play catch the price rises when

      1) price rise sites aren't working, so you can't tell who to buy

For those of you looking for a cheap midfielder, check out No.4 on the list. Take into consideration the time he was on the pitch for in GW3.....pretty impressive.

Same. Between him,Mirallas and Tadic for me....prefer the first 2. Tough decision for my Schurrle replacement 😆

Who's there to rotate with him though? McGeady & Eto?

Let me know who you go for in the end 🙂

Those WCing, what front 3 are you looking at? Currently thinking Sturridge (best captaincy options), Costa and Adebayor.

      currently on :

      Krul

      PVA Moreno Shawcross

      Sterling Rambo Zaha Siggy

      Falcao Costa (c) Aguero

      Elliot Marney Hutton Moore

0.7 ITB for a rainy day. However it's looking very likely that Falcao will be Sturridge for at least a fortnight

Not yet but I think I'm going for it. Defence is too much of a shambles for this week; for example RMT forecasts 7 more points this GW alone after WC.

Not sure with Naismith. On form now but how long will it last and it's a bit of a pain to upgrade a 5.3 player after.

Totally agree. Just struggling to go for anyone else.

With my current team it would mean downgrading ivan to a 5.5 or Ivan to a 6.5 and zaha to a 4.5

Well after a horrendous start benching 33 points on GW1 and replacing Costa with Jovetic in GW3, its fair to say that im somewhat fortunate to have collected even 151 points as it is (ID-8283), so i felt it was time for the wildcard. I need a serious change in fortune to turn this round and i hope im on the right tracks with this team. With the lack of good striking options between £5.5 and £7.5 other than naismith and maybe pelle, i have opted for a punt and brought in BAINES at the back instead of upgrading naismith to a £7.5m striker. Really appreciate any advice or thoughts! Cheers.

    KRUL ELLIOT
IVANOVIC BAINES BERTRAND VAN AANHOLT HUTTON

    RAMSEY STERLING TADIC SIGGY KING

    AGUERO COSTA NAISMITH

just remember if you trade in Baines, you need to prepare to have him for the entire season! He will frustrate you with a 1 pointer at HOME to Burnley but then fill you with joy when he scores a penalty and a freekick away to Stoke!

yeah unfortunately that is the down side to him. unsure whether he is worth the £7m but surely worth a punt with his stats? hoping martinez works on his defence after the chelsea game too. worth £7m in your opinion??

not for me this season, especially since I am a big fan of Ivanovic so all my "defender" budget is tied up on him. There is just too many more midfield/striker options I think this season that I would rather spend big up top

Can someone please enlighten me as to what point a value of a player rises or falls? It's to do with the amount of transfers in or out in a round right?

Need to do Jovetic > Costa and Filipe Luis > Jaanmat in the next two weeks but only have 0.2 million of a margin to work with. i.e. if Luis falls by more than one and Jaanmat increases by more than one, I can't make the transfer.

Ah godammit. Last season there was a specific threshold right?

Thought I could keep an eye on transfers in/out and if getting close just take the hit of an extra transfer before price increase/drop.

Last season yes. They've caught us all out this time round. Loads of price drops and few increases.

For a draft league, should I make this trade?

Rooney + Siggy for Costa + Tadic.

I'd be giving up Rooney and Siggy.

Keep in mind I've somehow wheeled and dealed my way to an incredible midfield (Fab-Sterling-Eriksen-Yaya-Walcott).

I'm really interested in getting Daniel Nii Tackie Mensah "Danny" Welbeck, but I think it is a little early to double up on Arsenal attack (owning Ramsey/Sanchez in addition).
So for now, up until say GW 8, who is best for around the 7.5m and below mark?
    Pelle, Naismith, Diouf.....

ditto on first part. (nii tackie should only be allowed to be said in a scottish accent)
pass on the second part. despite seeing him put in a horror show v west brom pelle could be the one. one issue with him though is you'll find it hard to sell him gw8
