We delve into the Gameweek 5 data this evening in our first members article of the week. Wayne Rooney’s new role for United comes under analysis, as do Burnley and Leicester’s displays up front, whilst a couple of north London-based frontmen are also placed under the microscope after their contrasting weekend performances.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

C.Kouyate will be out for 6 weeks. He will probably miss 5 games and might be available for Aston Villa at home 8 nov. dg

  2. Why bother with ManU attack?

Is United attack even necessary? The goals are likely to be spread around numerous premium priced assets.

    Falcao 11m
    RVP 12.4m
    Rooney 10.4m
    ADM 9.8m
    Mata 8.8m
    Herrera 7.3m

Of these 6 players I don't believe we can pinpoint a particular individual that is likely to have significantly higher goal involvement than any of the other 5. For this reason I don't believe any United player represents good value. For example at Chelsea we know Costa is going to score the bulk of the goals with the whole attack revolving around him as the lone striker. By contrast United's trifecta system with CM's bombing forward increases the competition for FPL points within the side.

Well obviously RVP and Rooney won't score goals or assist anymore. Herrera is just a DM who won't do anything and Mata will stay on the bench all season and not do anything at all.

One of Rooney/RVP will be dropped. Herrera will as well if he continues to poach ala Mata instead of doing his job winning the battle in midfield, which Mata's already been dropped for so.

Yeah I'm thinking Costa, Kun and Pelle/Welbeck is the way to go. Anyone who is likely to have a high goal involvement in their team, particularly if they are high scoring teams is the better way to go.

Totally agree with this. Its one reason why I am not jumping on the DiMaria wagon and also sold Rooney yesterday. They may become better value later in the season if injury strikes and other top teams rotate more, but at the moment its hard to go for anyone of those 3 strikers when there are players like Pelle and Welbeck nailed-on and performing well for much cheaper.

As for the midfield options, Mata is surely not an option any more due to being benched, and I doubt Herrera will have any consistent output to justify that price over someone like Tadic who will play further forward and without any risk of being benched.

I can sort of understand the clamor for ADM, but he's not a goal-scorer by trade (only 4 all of last season with RM) so I see his two strikes as anomalies personally. His number of shots and touches in the box would suggest this is a fair conclusion. If you buy him for his assist potential I think Fabregas and Ramsey are both better options with better fixtures soon, not to mention the returning Walcott.

In summary, there's too much value in the 8.5-9.0m midfield and 7.5m striker brackets to betaking risks with United players when there is still a lot of uncertainty with how they will set up going forwards.

I agree with you about rooney but not di maria. I think the English league will be easier for ADM to score goals in lots of opposition teams are gung ho.

I think you make some decent arguments but sort of miss your own point. ADM is a must pick because he will start every game, unlike the front 3 IMHO, and is everything that's good about united in attack. United will score goals and ADM will be heavily involved. If you want some united exposure, he's the only player I can see any value.

And I'd love see you show me some value in the 6.5-9.0m bracket outside of Sterling.

The competition to be amongst the goals at United makes them all poor value when everyone is fit. 5 of those 6 will start every week and they are all likely to be involved spreading the points amongst them.

"How do you solve a problem like DI Maria"

The moderators need lessons in writing a good headline.

I am likely to switch to ADM because he is a midfielder and not one of the precious strikers. That way its not as risky to pick him. Falcoa and RVP are horrendously overpriced. Rooney may pull through from deeper but its safer to observe for now as your point is valid.

Falcao, ADM, Herrera are new signings who have made an immediate impact and have featured on the score sheet. RVP, Rooney and Mata were the main goal scorers last year. Therefore we now have twice as many players who are capable of scoring goals and getting assists. Based on the few games where all 6 have been involved 'quantitative analysis' is obviously limited. I'm using another form of analysis, that of observation.

    ::::: Dead Team Challenge - GW5 Leaderboard Updated :::::

Before I begin, just to let you know that a mistake was made last week which has since been corrected, so apologies to The Casual for that...

Also we've added a green & red (& the ever elusive grey) arrow feature to allow people to track their weekly progress up and down the leaderboard table... and there is also a new 'week by week ranking' tab as well...

    So...

Congratulations to our current leader, Hymie who is on an impressive 310pts, which equates to an amazing Overall Rank of 4.6k...

Highest scorers in the GW were GreenWindMill & RonMadPirlo, both with a cool 60pts (honourable mention to PorkPieSausageRoll on 59pts)... which would have given them a weekly rank of about 77k...

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1raAyvT8NYalwe4_-1EqJZBOOcbwjmixKpFu18ySKGVQ/edit#gid=1705963376

You can also click on the 'teams' tab and scroll through to check your team individually... the teams are listed alphabetically so that should make it easier to navigate...

    Thanks...

Seeing a lot of familiar faces.. so gonna repost for the last time.
    Leicester Striker situation:
When Leicester play 3 uptop Ulloa and Vardy and probably Nugent will start. Ulloa is the main target man, Nugent drops deeper and does the dirty work and Vardy offers pace on the counter. Considerin they've got 3 away games coming up expect Vardy to be their main outlet as he'll be the one getting the ball out of leicesters half and into dangerous areas on counters. When they play 2 uptop it'll be Ulloa and Vardy soon enough... Ulloa again the main target man and Vardy creating and making space for others etc just behind him. though Nugent has been working his ar$e off of late so for now it'll be him behind Ulloa. this will just mean that Vardy goes out on the wing and though he will be reverse OOP on paper will still maintain a high assist threat(and considering he's speed and workrate i'd wager he'll still have the highest avg position on the pitch). . Nugent will see the bench more often while Vardy and Ulloa are nailed on. When Nugent is on the pitch he is on penos.. when he is not Ulloa will be on them.
Last season Vardy was the most impressive player in the championship for me.. He tailed off at the end and suffered from burnout missed the last few. he did get 16 goals and double figures in assists in just 30 odd games. in preseason i'd backed him to be teh main man at leicester and the budget price of 5 seemed too good to pass up but now that his injury worry is behind him i'm getting him straight away.
    in a nutshell:
IF you want a cheap 8th attacker who will be on your bench most weeks but is nailed on and has very high assist potential(and a fair goal threat too) get Vardy.
IF you want a cheap 7th attacker who you want to play every week get Ulloa(high goal threat low assist potential).. as he is a bit too expensive to be benched week in week out. though tbh as much as i love the foxes i would not wanna play an attacker every week 🙂 ..

I prefer Ulloa he can score all types of goals and a threat from set pieces which Vardy dosen't have. With the same qualities as Pelle and the fact he's much cheaper I've gone with him as my 3rd striker

        +1

Just don't fall into the trap of having 8 good attackers and rotating them

        ulloa + 4.5m milf + Cash

        OR

        Vardy + 7 good attackers

Yup.. this is it basically. Vardy prob the best sub 5.0 option around imo as a benchwarmer as he is capable of big scores. so for me he is a no brainer considerin i dont like rotating players and i want 7 good attackers

Yup.. i'm getting Vardy cause i want a cheap 8th attacker and it fits my fpl style of having a sub 5.0 player to bench. if you want Ulloa he is a grand option too.

I thought that Leicester'd get battered at set pieces this season after watchign em last season(part of the reason they bough Upson initially).. but they have looked solid. Moore should prove to be a bargain. just dont expect miracles 🙂 .. Keep your expectations Around 8-10 CS's by the season end and you wont be disappointed 🙂 .. the stats show leicester have been lucky of late not to concede more but a lot of the shots conceded have been easily blocked and pot shots basically.

  6. Common misconceptions
    GetYerYayasOut

    Hello

I work as a data scientist, and I have noticed some common misconceptions on this site.

    1. Being Due

There is no such thing. Scoring goals can be viewed as a random process, scoring a goal today doesn't make you more or less likely of scoring a goal tomorrow. What it does, is to give you a better idea of what the underlying chance is for a player to score in each game. It is possible that you suspect a player has underperformed, and that you are right about this. But that still only means that he has a higher chance of scoring in the next game than you would estimate based on his performance, not that he has a higher chance of scoring that players of similar skill level.

    2. Overfitting.
Examples: "He scores well against West Ham", "He scores high in the beginning of the season only".

Nate Silver talks about this at length in his book "The Signal and the Noise". Humans have a large tendency to see more patterns that are actually there. I cannot offhand reject any of these hypotheses. But one could do an analysis of them and find out. And I'm confident that most of them wouldn't hold if this was done.

    3. Coverage
Example: "I would prefer player X, but I got player Y to get coverage of team Z.

This concept doesn't make much sense, given that we are playing for total points. The point don't care much about your coverage. The one exception is captaincy. It is preferable to have your strongest players belong to different teams so that you have a good captain each week. Other than that coverage doesn't supply any advantage. It may feel like you are missing out if a big club gets a big haul and you don't have any of the players. But if you instead have a player who will get more points overall, that is better for you.

      V nice summary.

On 3, coverage id disagree slightly. If the fixtures were this and you had 6 players-
      A. Chelsea vs Stoke
      B. Man City vs Leicester
      C. Arsenal vs Everton

In a pure snapshot of one week you want to be all over fixtures A and B. Again in isolation 3 Chelsea and 3 Man City.
In reality to have 6 players there ignores the future fixtures (say 6 weeks), meaning transfers to shift. Also if you say had Hazard, Fabregas and Costa and Chelsea won 2.0 there is a good chance one of those players will no get points. Budget wise difficult too.
In the above scenario i would like-
      A. Chelsea vs Stoke- Costa, Fab, Defender
      B. Man City vs Leicester- Aguero and or Silva
      C. Arsenal vs Everton- Welbeck and or Ramsey/Chambers

Spreads the chance of points and more balanced moving forwards

In the meantime, what I mean is this: Coverage never seems to work for me, for the following reasons.

Take your example, Chelsea vs Man City.

At the moment, in Citeh, ONLY Aguero as very good stats - all the rest are meh, including Silva.Aguero is both very expensive and injury prone.
Chelsea: Costa and Ivanovic are stand outs - but they are indecently so, because their stats are outstanding. Hazard is improving, and Fabregas is just middling, although he is providing solid chances. However, the Chelsea midfield seems to be cannibalising each others' points.

So, rather than have "coverage, I prefer to follow the stats, irrespective of fixtures, and look at fixtures only to fine-tune this process. OK?

Apologies once again if you are offended.

Your examples make good sense to me there.

Maybe i look at it wrong, at the moment i have no arsenal, moving Naismith to Pelle over Welbeck. This worries me as i have no Arsenal involvement ( another word for coverage i guess!)

Well, no Arsenal IS a worry - not for fixtures, but for how they are playing.

Second only to Chelsea in terms of form.

This is, strangely, a GOOD week to pick up an Arsenal player, particularly Welbeck, as Walcott is due back!

I agree that it can be good to be more balanced moving forward, for the reason mentioned: Captaincy.

I don't agree that it's a problem to have three offensive players in one matchup if we ignore the above argument. Yes, there is a good chance that your players don't all get points if they are playing for the same team. But there is a good chance of that if they are all playing for different teams too.

I performed some analysis on this, and found that the goals scored follow a poisson distribution overall. That is, the chance of scoring a goal is independent of how many has been scored previously in the match. Thus it doesn't lower your chances if your team mates scores goals you are not involved in.

Not sure I agree with your example in your second paragraph here. Lets say every team averaged 2 goals scored per game and that we are only refering to attacking players.

          Triple up
Team A: Maximum points potential is 2 goals and 2 assists divided amongst 3 players

          Coverage
Team B: 1 player, maximum points potential 2 goals scored
Team C: 1 player, maximum points potential 2 goals scored
Team D: 1 player, maximum points potential 2 goals scored

Coverage can achieve 6 goals and the Triple up can only get 2 goals and 2 assists. This doesn't even account for bonus points as well where the 3 games offer 9 bonus points whereas the one game with 3 players only offers 3 bonus points. The points ceiling is much higher with coverage.

Each team might average two goals a game, but they won't score exactly two goals each match. Some teams score more goals than others, and some matches are more likely to be high-scoring than others.

The occasions when it is considered advantageous to double or triple up will be those favourable fixtures when the team is expected to score rather more than the average two goals, or when the team is regularly scoring three goals every time. Team A in your example will be expected to score more than two goals in their match, and their two or three star players may well get three of four goals and assists between them. Meanwhile, the probably inferior players in the less favourable fixtures for Teams B, C and D may only get a goal and a couple of assists between them, if that. Tripling up is far superior to covering three different teams in this case.

Actually, shouldn't one of the three teams in your coverage example be Team A? This would improve your chances, but is still likely to be inferior to doubling or tripling up if Team A scores 4 or more goals.

I agree that at times doubling up can be a good thing. In principal I wouldn't dare triple up because the goal average would probably need to be at least 3 goals per game for it to be worthwhile.

Nevertheless in a vacuum where all the variables are equal 'coverage' is not a myth.

OK, tripling doesn't often work for very long in attack, but can be effective in defence - remember Tozey's method of choosing a goalkeeper and two defenders from each of two teams that have perfect home and away rotation, and both of which have cheap players and don't concede too many goals at home?

I think your example is more about what I would call spread (avoidance of doubling up) than about coverage (which is usually taken to mean the inclusion of at least one representative of each of the top teams).

The variables are not equal in practice. If they were, there would be no advantage in giving preference to players from the top teams, and no team would be likely to have more than one player that you would want to select anyway, and in fact there would be no such thing as top teams since all teams would be equal!

If in a particular game-week you expect Teams A, B and C to each score two goals then it would indeed be better to select the best player from Team A, the best one from Team B and the best one from Team C. However, if you expect Team A to score 4 goals and to share the goals and assists between their 3 star players, while Teams B and C only score only 1 goal each, then it would be better to select to select the 3 star players from Team A.

In the longer term, though, choosing players from different teams might provide more flexibility in the longer term, especially when the team might have a postponed match or a difficult fixture.

I hope it wasn't too long for Ryan.

Basically, I was disputing his example of Tripling Up v Coverage, because of its assumption that Tripling Up would be used for matches in which Team A was only likely to score a maximum of two goals, and that Teams B, C and D were just as good as Team A.

Firstly I want to address your point about defensive coverage. This is an entirely different beast altogether. In this instance all the defence is rewarded for getting a clean sheet so most people don't have a problem with the term in this context. You can cover a teams defence with any defender. If you double or triple up then you simply increase the risk/reward.

In terms of attack I think we are on the same page really. I agree that its right to double up on an attacking player if they are in a good team with good fixtures (value may come into this too eg Southampton/Swansea). Of course we would be assuming that they are likely to rack up the goals over that time to increase the likelihood of those two players being well involved.

I also like the term 'spread'. Thats a useful term and has some statistical weight unlike 'coverage'. In a fantasy football context I'd consider coverage to be covering a good teams attacking potential. Generally it has to be a player who has a high overall involvement in the teams goals. Costa for example has proven to be such a player, the same can be said for other big fish in small ponds eg Siggy.

Isn't one of the things Nate Silver talks about that we should be constantly re-assessing our predictions - most obviously around Bayesian probabilities?

In point 1 for example, the probability of a striker scoring in their next but one match IS going to be affected by what they do in their next match. A striker who fluffs two chances, gets booed and subbed off at 59 minutes probably sees their confidence drop, their manager's confidence in them drop and the team team-mates' confidence in them drop making them less likely to score in the next game.
Whereas you would imagine Ulloa and Vardy are on top of the world right now.

That is not an argument for knee-jerking and I completely agree with you that every assessment should be made objectively and based on all the factors, not just the most recent ones, but in this case form is a factor which should be brought into the overall equation.

      1. GetYerYayasOut
        • 11 Years

Yes, possibly. If form is an important factor, it is a further argument against the concept of "being due".

Yes I completely agree 'being due' as a vague concept is a nonsense. If, however, the underlying stats suggest that a players is doing everything right in terms of position, touches, chances etc and then you review those chances and see that they aren't fluffing their lines but the margins are just very fine or goalkeepers are pulling off implausible saves, or they are being unselfish, then the statistics may point to future returns.

          It's a good discussion though.

The Krul conundrum - strategies for getting him out.

So many of us have Krul, but no one wants to take a hit to get rid, but with so many nice options upfront to play around with, (ADM, Pelle, Aguero, Walcott) all to possibly bring in when do you take a GW to change the keeper? Perhaps it is worth a hit.

I have Krul/Foster, Foster seems like an ok bet this week, but really could do with getting in Heaton, Forster or Mannone.

What strategies are those with Krul taking......

When it comes to cheap goalkeepers, I'm a strong believer in just being patient. at 4.5, Krul will pick up a few clean sheets and saves. Nobody at 4.5 is likely to be prolific in terms of clean sheets, regardless of form up until now.

I also have krul and foster btw and sticking until I wildcard.

    Repost from old article:
    3-5-2 RMWCT

    Heaton Gilks
    Baines Clyne Chambers Moore Wisdom
    Hazard ADM Sterling Tadic Siggy
Costa Lukaku 4.9m (would have been Jutkiewicz, could be Vardy)

I'd always envisioned two premium priced forwards in this formation but I don't love Aguero's price and am giving the MUN forwards some time to sort themselves out. Any thoughts appreciated.

Anyone know why Wenger didn't play Sànchez this weekend? Rotation risk? Özil better option?

If you're a united fan are you thinking of switching to:

    A) city

    B) Liverpool

    C) Guildford town (for easy access on match days)

Are u serious? Being real fan mean u won't give up from your club even if your club is relegated to 7th league. I am not from England,I am from Serbia and City is in my heart and I won't ever stop to support them, no matter what happen.

So I have two FTs, need to use at least one, would you remove either of moreno or balo?
    (for whom)

    Forster Mccarthy
    Pieters clyne moreno (moore naylor)
    Adm fabs sterling siggy 9boyd)
    BALO costa pelle
    2FT, 1.2

You should do Balo>Welbeck just so we can have virtually identical teams. Lots of dough in the bank for Kun, defensive upgrade or a 5th mid later. I like the flexibility.

BTW, the masses have suggested starting Naylor over Moreno for GW6 (in response to my inquiries on this board).

He'll still get game time, Everton just had/have lots of fixtures the past two days (Europa this past Thursday, then CP Sunday, and League Cup tomorrow). Reckon he's secure until Barkley's back. I wouldn't play him, but Roberto played a lot of bench guys this week.

Over King yeah. Not saying Naismith is a bad choice (I'm an Evertonian so I'm biased anyways), just saying I don't have him in my team is all.

Only thing I'd ask is why have both Tadic and Pelle? Also Pool's D is in shambles right now but it might be worth giving Moreno a few more weeks after the derby this week

Looking for a cheap (>5.6) midfielder for the next few GWs to help me afford an upgrade. Which one would you pick?

        C. Moses + 0.1m

Is this a good move(next week): hendo,Silva and naismith --> marney, sterling and welbeck?

If so my team will look like this:

        Krul Mannone
        Clyne Pieters Taylor Wisdom Vlaar
        Sterling Fab Ramsey Siggy Marney
        Costa Aguero Welbeck

        Thoughts?
