We delve into the Gameweek 5 data this evening in our first members article of the week. Wayne Rooney’s new role for United comes under analysis, as do Burnley and Leicester’s displays up front, whilst a couple of north London-based frontmen are also placed under the microscope after their contrasting weekend performances.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Which set of players would you rather have...

    A)Mane/Mangala/Walcott
    B) Tadic/Ramsey/Terry

    Thanks

I'm brainstorming for GW8 already and I need a bit of help...

The strongest XI I would field for that week would be -

    Begovic (McCarthy)
Clyne - Reid - Taylor (Pieters & PVA)
Siggy - Cesc - Sterling - ADM (Zaha)
    Costa - Ulloa - Pelle

Obviously a problem with the Stoke/Swansea fixture so I was thinking - Forster for Begovic & Taylor for Baines (FT and -4 hit)

    Opinions?

I wouldn't be worried about rotation for him this GW, longer term its an issue.

    Heaton/Mannone
    Clyne - ShawX - PVA - Duff - Wisdom
    Fabregas - ADM - Sterling - Siggy - Boyd
    Welbz - Aguero - Costa

    Is a really tempting WC.

Falcao only touched the ball twice in the penalty area against Leicester. I have him and hoping he's in for a big week but yesterday wasn't very promising. Think Rooney has to go soon with his deeper position but wouldn't want to sell him for a hit this week.

Team at the moment for GW6 (2 FTs, £0.1m ITB):

    Begovic
    Clyne Evans Moreno
    Fabregas Di Maria Sterling Sigurdsson
    Pelle Costa Balotelli

subs - McCarthy, NTaylor, Moore, Zaha

    Best move(s) this week?
    a) Evans > Duff/Wisdom
    b) Evans & Balotelli > Falcao & Wisdom/Duff
    c) Evans & Balotelli > Ivanovic & Welbeck
    d) Evans, Zaha & Balotelli > Aguero, Quinn, Wisdom/Duff

The 2 FTs give me a bit of flexibility i suppose but i'm half tempted to just dump Evans and roll my 2 frees over to next week. Which (if any!) of the above appeal?

Now is as good a time as any imo, just depends if you think it warrants the hit. D is awfully tempting and though it may not pay itself back this week it is a very solid long term move.

Zaha was a bit of a WC punt gone wrong so dumping him and banking the extra million or so should prove useful at some point. Really not sure what to do. Balotelli could well bit me in the ass if i dump him this week. That derby should have a few goals....

Perhaps just dumping Evans and keeping the 2 FTs is the way to go

Me because I have other priorities and don't buy the 'essential' hype.

I'm not saying he won't do well and I may still squeeze him in on WC in a couple of weeks. Obviously he looks dangerous on the ball and will score more goals and assists from here but he is no Gareth bale and won't keep up anywhere near his honeymoon start, IMO of course. Lack of shots make him too risky to captain so other ways to splash the cash.

Need to get rid of Chester, Bojan, Rio and possibly Mata.

    Which looks best?

    1) Chester, Bojan for Moore and Ulloa this week leaving 0.0 in bank.

Then GW7 possibly Mata > ADM and Rooney > Pelle as one is rotation/bench risk and the other playing deeper. This leaves me with 1.8 to upgrade Ferdinand & Wisdom. ... or after the shambles will 'Van the man' restore Mata to number 10 and play Rooney up front?

    2) Alternatively do Mata > ADM, Rooney > Pelle and Bojan > Ulloa this week for 4 point hit, play Clyne (QPR) , Wisdom (BUR) and Taylor (sun) and have 1.3 to sort out defence next week

    3) Just Mata > ADM, Rooney > Pelle?

    Thanks

You think? After his performance over the weekend? I know Sanchez was out, wouldn't he end up there…and Walcott down the road? I'm trying to separate myself with a player or too. I tried Zaha this weekend and that didn't pay off.

Might be worth considering Zaha -> Boyd and having him on the bench. Then Naismith -> Pelle for the other FT. Not sure if Balo -> Ulloa is worth the -4, maybe wait a week on that.

Where did this diamond formation routine come from ?...Liverpool and United are just rubbish at the back playing it, It's an absolute dead duck of an idea to me. There's a reason why City and Chelsea play with two CDM's and a back four..BECAUSE IT WORKS..!!

    1. Aaron Ramessi - Straya
      • 12 Years

aye - they have an imbalance in their squads between offensive and defensive talent, and have tailored their formations according, much like arsenal's 4-1-4-1 nonsense...

Out of topic. love your posts and tables. One of the reasons I bought membership this year 😉

In topic, Gerrard is not really a CDM to depend on him totally to defend, and Blind for me is a better attacking player than defending (being a Dutch national team fan)

True, you do not want one of your defenders to be caught out of position just to cover you CDM

Find it hilarious myself, if Liverpool had 2 solid defensive minded players instead of just Gerrard trying to adjust himself to play infront of the back 4 by himself, they'd concede A LOT less.

Liverpool did it last season to fit in both Suarez and Sturridge up front (which a 4-2-3-1 doesnt allow you)
Obviously City played a 4-4-2 as well, their case is different to Chelsea.

United are trying to fit in all their attacking talent and its not working obviously. It can work

      1. st4rt__

Liverpool also conceded 50+ in the league, Suarez/Sturridge made them achieve 2nd last yr, if they chose to play the same system this season for Balo/Sturridge, they'll struggle to get inside top 4.

        1. Dr Dream
          • 13 Years
          11 years, 2 months ago

Yeah they did concede fifty plus because the formation was pants and their defence not the best..but tbh I think the United defenders are worse and playing with the same pants formation..

Agreed. I think some teams do this just to accommodate players, rather than picking a formation that works and filling the spots accordingly.

United are exactly this. Realistically you can't fit Falcao, Rooney and RVP (let alone Mata and Januzaj) into a 4-2-3-1.

      De Gea
      Rafael Smalling Rojo Shaw
      Hererra Blind
      Mata Rooney Falcao
      RVP

Looks a lot more defensive but considering they're shipping goals by the bucket load you'd have to think it's a better tactic!

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

Agrred...United simply do not have the quality at the back to play with two strikers...they just don't.

When City play the CB's and CDM's that a team has to play through are

        Kompany Mangala
        Yaya Fernandinho

        United is

        Smalling Evans
        Blind

No prizes for guessing who will concede most goals by miles and miles...

So I have Aguero, Rooney and Naismith up front, and need to ditch one for Costa. 0.6 ITB, I'm leaning towards dropping Rooney and maybe doing Ramsey to Di Maria in midfield.

    A) Rooney -> Costa, no United cover for a week, do the rest of B next week.
    B) Rooney, Ramsey, Terry -> Costa, Di Maria, Bertrand (-4)
    C) Rooney, Ramsey, Ward -> Costa, Di Maria, Duff (-4)
    D) Aguero, Ramsey -> Costa, Di Maria

Agüero has Hull away, while Rooney has West Ham at home. Both will surely concede, but while Aguero is the main man, Roo is now moved deeper so i don't feel so bad about dropping him.

Terry obviously has a good fixture (AVL) so shipping him for Bertrand (QPR) is unlikely to be worth a hit, but is a way to afford it. Ward has LEI, while Duff has wba, so that doesnt make the hit, but again has to be done to afford it.

Lucy (Saints supporter) is uncertain about Southampton's midfield prospects considering goals are coming from everywhere. The real value as far as I can see is getting Bertrand and/or Clyne in. I might hang fire and see what Mane is like. He will surely take up Long's position and comes with an impressive goal scoring record. Albeit in the Austrian league!
