It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in “the hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

After having a discussion with The Axolotl about ADM, I was wondering how much you guys base your FPL decisions on - data vs opinion?

I think I would put myself at about 70% opinion (derived from watching a player or MotD) and 20% statistical data.

The other 10% is trend following, with price rise/fall and mass ownership coverage contributing to my decisions.

Probably. Around 90% opinion for me. I can't remember the last time I looked at stats to make a decision.

I am the exact opposite. I base most decisions on underlying stats.

But I do think certain players are the statistical exception, i.e. Toure last year. Having watched Di Maria in the last two games, I just think he might be this season's statistical exception and therefore I have gotten him in.

never. they may be scarier but it doesnt change how likely or unlikely a player is to score/assist

while i can't argue with you re: likeliness to score/assist, there is another factor in that - the level of risk/reward at stake.

High ownership players become high risk high reward without and low risk, low reward with - regardless of their performance.

Sometimes its worth having a player just to cock-block the competition (e.g. head to head rivalries)

but seriously i made a conscious effort a couple of years ago to not look at other teams, just the points tallies on the league tables. one of many changes made to go back to an age of innocence and not worrying about other players

Similar.. i try to watch every game to make a decision. it's the reason i dont want Pelle yet for eg. the stats flatter him but when you actually watch him you realise that the stats are very deceiving.

i like certain stats, like shots made. if i watch match of the day and see a nice goal, and think i might get that lad, then i read, that was his only shot, then i don't get him. which is my ADM issue right now. and it might cost me...

I'd say I care more about stats, but I don't go crazy for the underlying ones, especially this early in the season. I prefer looking at long term FPL points and price. So Di Maria, I'm not crazy about, not so much because of his lack of touches in the box and shots (Although that is worrying) and more because he scored so few goals for Real Madrid.

Hi gents. Hope your teams are shaping up well.

Need your opinions. I currently have on 1 FT and am not sure what to do. Here are the options:

    A) Naismith + Cahill > Pelle + Taylor
    B) Naismith>Ulloa
    C) Bruce/Bartley/Caulker > Taylor

Clearly my defense needs to be sorted. But really want pelle in cause of my mini league competitors. Considering the move cahill since he hasn't had great returns and shipping him out is the only way to get pelle in for naismith. Would that first option be crazy though?

    Any help would be appreciated

I hope you're good to go, since we have virtually identical teams. Your backline is better due to Ivan's presence, but I assume I have more funds for future flexibility.

Pelle (c) for me, if you're interested. ADM (c) over Costa paid off last week, so I'm feeling lucky.

    Evening gents

    A) Tadic
    B) Ramsey

Currently own tadic with the cash to switch to Rambo. No other Sot / Gooner coverage. Rest of mini league have either Welbeck or Rambo and North London Derby is always a goalfest. On the other hand sot should score a few at home to QPR. All thoughts welcome. Cheers

West Ham have looked really good so far, offensively at least. 2nd in GF only to Chelsea. They dominated Spurs in open play, beat Liverpool and Palace pretty handily, and only suffered the 1 loss to a very good Southampton.

    Wildcard team! Please your thoughts

    Forster, Schmeichell

Baines, Chambers, Bertrand, Duff, Naylor or Wilson

    Fabregas, Siggy, Sterling, ADM, Ramsey

    Costa, Welbeck, Ulloa

    0,5 in the bank

Too light front3 altough you are playing 3-5-2 most of the time.

would u get falcao/ sturridge + boyd instead of ulloa + adm ?

no other great striker options to be honest as kun is injury prone and rotation risk
