Our Monday regular is rolled out once again, as we scour the Premier League treatment rooms to assess the players who picked up injuries over the weekend action.

Arsenal
Jack Wilshere was forced off with a knee problem in the weekend draw with Hull. Post-match, though, Arsene Wenger allayed fears over the midfielder’s fitness by insisting he’ll be available to play in the midweek Champions League encounter against Benfica.

Aston Villa
Nathan Baker deputised for the injured Philippe Senderos away to Everton but was forced off after sustaining a “pretty bad” hamstring injury, Paul Lambert has confirmed. The Villa boss has since revealed he is optimistic that Senderos will return for next Monday’s trip to QPR.

Crystal Palace
The club’s official match report confirmed midfielder James McArthur was withdrawn just before the hour-mark after picking up a muscle injury in the narrow home loss to Chelsea.

Hull
Nikica Jelavic is set for scans later today after sustaining a twisted knee during the warm-up prior to the Tigers’ draw at Arsenal. Elsewhere, Steve Bruce has concerns at the back – the Hull boss revealed keeper Steve Harper was forced off with a damaged muscle in his arm, whilst Michael Dawson also had to be replaced at the Emirates after picking up a late injury. Speaking to the club’s official website, Bruce explained:

“Jelavic has unfortunately twisted his knee and he will have a scan on Monday. Dawson has an ankle problem and Harper looks as if he has ruptured his bicep, which is a horrible injury. We are probably going to have to recall Mark Oxley from his loan spell at Hibernian.”

Liverpool
Daniel Sturridge was missing yet again as the Reds squeezed past QPR at Loftus Road yesterday. After the 3-2 win, Brendan Rodgers rolled out an update on the injured striker, who has now failed to feature since Gameweek 3 for the Merseysiders:

“’He was returning from his thigh injury and medically everything was fine with that. Then, on his very first morning, he was jogging around the pitch in the warm-up – there was no action, no striking of a ball. He was jogging around the field and then in the actual warm-up, he felt his calf a little tight. The scan shows that there is a little bit of damage in his calf. So the medical team tell me it’s probably between two to four weeks, which is a huge disappointment for us. But we have enough players now.”

Manchester City
Frank Lampard was stretchered off within half an hour of City’s home win over Spurs with a muscle injury. Manuel Pellegrini confirmed after the match that the midfielder will miss tomorrow’s Champions League trip to CSKA Moscow. Pablo Zabaleta was omitted from the squad entirely but this was purely down to rest – he’s travelled to Russia and is expected to start tomorrow.

Newcastle
Paul Dummett was withdrawn after 72 minutes of the weekend win over Leicester after suffering a recurrence of the hamstring problem which forced him out of international duties. Mike Williamson missed out altogether due to injury, the Magpies have confirmed. Cheick Tiote was forced out of the Magpies’ starting XI after picking up a knock during the pre-match warm-up.

QPR
Rob Green missed yesterday’s clash with Liverpool due to illness, allowing Alex McCarthy his first start of the season. Elsewhere at the back, Nedum Onouha was replaced at the break against the Reds after picking up a hamstring injury. Sandro was also replaced midway through the second period after picking up an injury, according to the club’s official Twitter stream.

Stoke
Reports suggest Victor Moses was subbed off midway through the second  half of yesterday’s win over Swansea due to injury. Phil Bardsley picked up a knock late on but, with the home side having made all three substitutions, stayed on the field.

Swansea
Defender Ashley Richards missed the trip to Stoke due to injury.

West Ham
James Tomkins was sidelined for the weekend win at Burnley after picking up a thigh problem, whilst Mauro Zarate also missed the match due to a minor knee problem.

Question - if Costa were to score 7 goals and 54 points between now and Christmas would you think that acceptable from an 11m player? This would be very roughly the score if he were to score with 20% rather than 40%+ of his shots.

Interesting, because I would say that would be a no from me. Id be expecting more than 6ppg from my 11m striker.

There are 9 games between now and Christmas for a PPG of 6. I'd say that's not really worth it, but it depends of course how well the other strikers are performing.

Yep, this is entirely possible, especially if other members of the Chelsea squad starting chipping in - ie Oscar. Obviously Im not saying it will happen (im not mystic meg) but I am saying its a distinct possibility and something to be aware of.

You still need to find 7 goals (or the equivalent points) from somewhere.

        Indeed, although

        a) I would expect Aguero to exceed that, so if it were a straight choice....

        b) would also expect there to be other strikers capable of getting that for less. Or more for the same..... (Welbeck, or Studge perhaps.... Or even Falcao ;))

Nah, left him out deliberately 😉 (actually he could easily meet or exceed that - although the fixtures stiffen somewhat in a few weeks)

    Which do you prefer....

    Begovic, Guzan
    Baines, Ivanovic, Alderweireld, (Moore), xxxx
    ADM, Sterling, Siggy, (Boyd), xxxx
    Pelle, Welbeck, xxxx

    a) Wilson, Fabregas, Costa

Thanks, a is my team at the moment.
Considering trying to get Aguero and Coleman in but that seems to be the only way.
I'd rather spread my budget than have two really expensive strikers as I think both Pelle and Welbeck are really under-priced.

What transfer would you make if Costa is out? Aguero in would mean my first hit of the season but it could be quickly recouped so don't mind. Is there another option though? Need to downgrade Krul at some point to free up funds. Also cork has bagged a couple of times now and does well when playing. Could he be about to cement a spot in an exciting Saints team and be a genuine rotation option for me?

    Lloris / Krul

    Bertrand / Kompany / Baines / Naylor / Wisdom

    ADM / Fabregas / Sterling / Siggy / Cork

    Costa / Pelle / Welbeck

    Appreciate the advice.

As a Lloris owner I'm not sure about doubling up just yet even if the fixtures are kind. Hadn't considered Trippier though, will need to look in to that one a little.

            Thanks both,

Robertson is another one although a couple of tough fixtures coming up.

Trippier has 54 crosses, 14 successful.
              Baines has 38, 11 successful.
              Robertson 38, 8 successful.

Obviously Burnley have had a problem with strikers being injured and misfiring.

Cork won't play every game. He can't keep Wanyama out. Wanyama will play in the tougher games, particularly away from home, and Cork will play mostly in the easier home games as he has perceived to have greater creative strengths, while Wanyama is great at breaking up play. A chief example of this was his appearance at Anfield on GW1. Koeman made comments about this situation a few weeks ago. Moreover, Cork is yet to sign a new contract with the club so there are doubts about his long-term future with the team, whereas Wanyama is definitely seen as one of our long-term stars.

Thoughts on this team for this week? 0.3m ITB and 2 FTs.

    Mannone, Hamer
    Clyne, Chambers, Taylor, Moore, Wisdom
Di Maria, Sterling, Fab, Siggy, Boyd
    Aguero, Costa, Pelle

I have the same two keepers as you and I'm worried Mannone will be dropped. I'm considering leaving my change until later in the week to see if anything is said, then replace him if he's going to be dropped. What are your thoughts on this?

        • 16 Years

I agree - keepers are my main worry at the minute. I think Mannone is likely to keep his place (though who knows after that disaster).

Contemplating Chambers out to Hutton to free up funds and allow me to get Forster

Looks good, but what's your thoughts on Baines? I would try to get him in if possible. Could do Sterking to Chadli and upgrade Naylor to Baines if you wanted him.

      1. Pooodle

        11 years, 4 months ago

I want Baines, but took him out 2 weeks ago on my WC to fund my expensive front 7. I could afford that swap but I'm terrified of dropping one of Sterling or Fab (Di Maria is staying)

        1. Mr Imp
          • 11 Years
          11 years, 4 months ago

I suppose the question to ask is whether you would be more concerned by not having Baines, or more concerned by not having Sterling.

I have both and am keeping both, but my compromise is having a lot of 4.0s in my team and thus a lack of clean sheets.

      Costa, Welbeck, Pelle.

I'm planning to bring in aguero for a 4pt hit. I am looking at:

      Costa to aguero and either

      a) Cahill to Bertrand
      B) Moreno to chambers
      C)fabregas to tadic
      D) none of those worth it

I'm edging towards B atm. I'm going to be waiting for more costa news though.

You own Ivanovic? You want Baines? Not sure how to fix it?

You should not try to make room for both, but should sell Ivanovic and buy Baines.

You probably already have Clyne or Bertrand in your team, so untill gw12 you will have:

Baines has: burn SWA sun WEST spurs Hull city QPR and so on
      Clyne has: STO hul LEI

At GW12/13 Southamptons fixtures take a turn for the worse, while Chelsea has a nice set of fixtures, so you trade Clyne/Bertrand to Azpi/Chelsea-defender of choice

Southampton then has: villa CITY ars UTD burn EVE cry CHE ARS utd
Chelsea has: BROM sun TOT new HUL sto WEST

I think this combination will be the best one the next 10 gameweeks, Ivanovic is too expensive as his statistics are taking a turn for the worse going forward. Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and United all look suspect at the back, while I don't think City-defenders offer the right value/nailed-onness.
