Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

A four-goal blitz against Tottenham last time around has ensured Sergio Aguero is this week’s runaway leader, with almost 50% of the votes cast. Up to nine goals for the season, the Man City forward has netted in six of his eight appearances so far, and up against a West Ham side with a single shut-out all season (at home to QPR), Aguero has already risen 0.2 in price heading into the weekend deadline.

Graziano Pelle is some way back in second spot. The Southampton striker has earned just under 16% of votes cast as he prepares for the visit of Stoke – bearing in mind his last three appearances at St Mary’s have returned 13, 9 and 15 points in the FPL game, though, the Italian looks a viable option. Team-mate Dusan Tadic earns 4% of votes after serving up a goal and four assists at home to Sunderland – the playmaker has now produced 34 points in the last three in front of his own supporters.

Diego Costa remains in contention for the league leaders’ trip to Old Trafford. Only 4% are considering the Chelsea forward with the armband due to Jose Mourinho’s mind games, but if given the chance against United’s dodgy defence, he has to be considered, having netted in all but one of his seven appearances.

Raheem Sterling is an armband option for some as Liverpool prepare for a home clash with Hull. Having scored or assisted in five of his seven starts, the youngster has remained a consistent option – after moving to the lone forward role against Real Madrid in midweek, he’s persuaded 3% of Fantasy managers to hand him the captaincy. Gylfi Sigurdsson is similarly backed for Swansea’s home encounter with Leicester, though is struggling for form, having blanked in four of the last five.

Further down, Arsenal and Spurs are overlooked ahead of enticing showdowns with Sunderland and Newcastle. Danny Welbeck (3% of votes) and Alexis Sanchez (1%) face a Black Cats backline that shipped eight to Southampton last weekend, whilst Christian Eriksen (1%) and Nacer Chadli (0.8%) will be looking to take advantage of a Magpies defence that have kept out their opponents just once in the last six.

Just done Costa to Pelle so as to fund Baines in.

Should I transfer out my bencher Chester or Clyne to avoid tripling up on Soton?
Clyne out also gvies more cash for upgrading my mids next week

    In a tough situation defensively

Which one of these options makes most sense?

    1. Mert + Mangala > Baines + Alcaraz for a -8 hit
    2. Fabs + Mangala > Baines + Oscar for a -8 hit
    3. Do nothing, and if Mangala doesn't play, Wisdom comes in.

    Thanks!

    1. Egg noodle

I'm curious about Alcaraz myself to be honest, is he nailed on?

As far as your question is concerned, just wait and do nothing i.e. option 3 in my opinion.

With everyone talking about shipping Costa, who here is actually holding on to him? If so, what is your reasoning? Why are you keeping him?

I think I am holding on to him as I think there is every chance he will play. Mourinho is the master of mind games. The other reason is I already had Aguero and Pelle upfront. I am not sure who else to waste a transfer on.

Costa owners who are holding on to him, share your reasoning with us!

    1. Les Bleus
      12 years, 11 days ago

If I had Aguero, I'd definitely hold on to Costa.

But I'm torn at the moment since I don't have Aguero so not sure what to do.

      1. Norco
        12 years, 11 days ago

I see that predicament. The Costa > Aguero is.probably the only move I agree on if one does not have Kun

    2. VougieDipond
      12 years, 11 days ago

Costa owner who doesn't own Aguero. Used my FT to ship Azpi (double bad luck from Chelsea)
I am -8 to get Aguero in and -4 to get Costa back following GW. So Aguero needs 3 goals against whm,mnu to cover this. Also means I can't fix any other issues with my team should they arise. I am just hoping Aguero doesn't go mental again and Costa returns against QPR. C'mon you Hammers 😀

      1. Norco
        12 years, 11 days ago

Smart man, way too much to ask to cover the transfers. For our sake I hope others actually take these hits not thinking about it long term

    3. Robe Wan
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

      Holding

      You know why Norco?

Because Fantasy PL is an emotional game. If I sell Costa and he is injured I lose 2-8 points (probably), if he plays, scores twice and I've sold him and have to buy him back, I'll try and top myself.

It could mentally scar me for several gameweeks. It did last time. I'm staying ahead of the curve. I also think Mourinho is messing around and he's been fit the whole time

Absolutely agree! I've been hit hard many times with decisions I've made over the years, I am not making another bad decision. I got him at 10.5 so it would be a waste to ship him only to.bring him back in a week or two.

    4. A guy
      12 years, 11 days ago

I've had him from GW1 and I have no plan to sell him. First of all I'd lose money, I have decent substitutions and he isn't going to be out for long anyway.

    5. kalmoffit
      12 years, 11 days ago

      12 years, 11 days ago

I want to keep Costa but most of my league are selling and improving there team, I don't have a decent enough sub and losing value on him.

The Costa situation isn't clear cut for me at all.

I already own Agüero and Pellè and don't like the alternatives.

I have one free transfer so whilst I could ditch Costa and have a short term boost if his replacement hits I cant reinvest the remaining bank without taking a hit and this would make buying him back almost a wildcard moment because it would again require at least one hit or leave Costa which vs QPR could be extremely hurtful to my rank.

In short I feel I can't ditch him

      I have Costa, Aguero, Welbeck.

My plan was ( 2 trfs) to bring in BAINES and stick with Costa.

Unless he drops by quite a bit before qpr I'm gonna struggle to get him back without a hit.

Have wisdom - don't fancy 2 of them.

                  Ain't he crocked?

                  Myhill played v United.

                    Sorry eyes not working.

Scout tweets say he'sback in training.

Why not ditch Costa, and all the drama, and get Hazard back in later? Can you afford Siggy to Haz once you have Baines?

Baines and stick with Costa I think.

This bug has muddied the waters. And all this Costa has barely trained was rubbish by Terry a while back on twitter who said he doesn't he looks sharp and aggressive.

Now the muscle injury is a groin.

To be honest I kinda think he starts on the bench vs United.

Wow that you can have Agüero Costa and Baines who don't you have.

Hi mate, out of interest who would you get in for Costa if you get rid? Noticed you have Tadic and wondering if you'd consider owning Pelle as well... My current dilemma is this!
        Cheers 🙂

          Pelle. No completion for me.

          I don't trust WBA.

Ok cheers! Was hoping to save my FT for the first time this season this week. Looking like it might not end up happening afterall haha!

Hold him for the week. Get more info about the extent of the injury. If he plays against QPR, its a win. If he doesn't you can get Rooney. Always scores at the Etihad. Or maybe do Costa > Berahino to fund cheap mid > Sanchez?

i dont want to ditch him with the intent of getting him back next week, cos theres bound to be something else that needs sorting which then means hits........... might ride my luck this week

I'd keep if I were you. Only other forward I would consider is Welbeck...
I'm also torn. Would get Pelle in for him if I get rid but would want to do now or never since their prices will both rise/fall tonight. I also have Tadic so feel doubling up on Southampton could become a headache when their fixtures take a turn for the worse... What do you make of my situation?

To be honest I don't want Welbeck in my team and I kinda think Arsenal are struggling as a team.

Double SOU would've worked fine last week!

Thou agreed fixtures turn south for them very soon. Thing with ditching for Pelle is even on a nil budget rises and falls you could buy him back.

        Tougher call, I like Pelle.
