The season could barely have started brighter for Raheem Sterling after the youngster grabbed two goals and an assist in the opening three Gameweeks for Liverpool. With Daniel Sturridge sidelined ever since, however, Sterling has struggled to replicate his early form, scoring just once and earning a pair of assists in the subsequent six Gameweeks.

Despite a weekend showdown against Newcastle on his agenda, Sterling is the most sold player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with over 65,000 owners parting company in order to acquire the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Dusan Tadic and Cesc Fabregas.

In our second members article of the week, we take a look at his displays with and without Sturridge on the park in order to ascertain just why he’s failed to deliver.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Basically nothing, but the fact that Drogba played 90 mins midweek means Costa will normally start and get around 60 mins.

Innsie, think about it this way. If you keep Sterling and Fabregas I can't see you moving up in the rank taking into consideration your position now. However, if you make a move for Sanchez/Hazard you have a much better chance of moving up. Food for thought. =)

Yeah good point, we're still early in the season though so I don't want to do anything too drastic to try catch the leading pack. It is food for thought though, cheers. It's alarming how under the radar Sanchez has gone though, an attacking return in every start bar 1 is very impressive... I think this has tempted me to bring him in.

This is true. Sanchez could easily flop while Sterling bags a brace and Fab keeps assisting for fun... That way I'd plummet 😆 Gotta think positive though... 🙂

Aren't you at least encouraged by Sterling's underlying stats and form? He's faded a little bit but still obviously a threat just by his play style (a bit like Hazard). My main worry is just Balo's uselessness.

Balo is way too selfish and a cancer to Liverpool. I feel like its slowly starting to eat away at the rest of the team.

but we all know JM wont give in that easily, fellow qpr doesnt need costa to do damage,

a drogba, 5 midfield and 2 attacking fullback is sufficient enough

Trends seem to be ppl ...

      1) Costa will play if they have them in their team
      2) Costa won't play if he's not in their team
      3) Sterling and or ADM out for Fab/Haz or Sanchez
      4) To Baines or not to Baines.

Baines has had an incredible start to the season. The fixtures were tough to start with for Everton but he has still managed to deliver excellent returns.

Already on 1 goal and 6 assists. Whereas he manged 5 assists in the whole of last season.

Looks like he's is in for a big season as the fixtures look bright going forward.

    Is Baines 'essential' then?

No. Baines can run really cold for months at a time and Everton don't look too good at the back.

He compensates the lack of CS by attacking returns.

Everton has had a rough start. The fixtures look good now and maybe CS will also start to come.

What does he have to do to be essential then?

He is just 8 points behind the highest scoring player in FPL atm.

7m price tag for such a player seems essential to me.

'Essential' means you HAVE to have him... in other words, the only way you can win FPL is by having Baines in your side... I don't think that's the case.

            • 13 Years

That's not the case with any player, but that's a whole other debate.

He has achieved that status atm imo.

If a 7m forward would have returned 51 points by now, you'd be raving about him, wouldn't you? And he would also be labelled as a 'bargain'.

So why not Baines when he has the added CS potential?

Like I said... he's a very effective weapon, not knocking him one bit. But you asked if he was essential... and I'm saying he isn't, because a manager could still win FPL without owning him. We aren't going to agree on the essential side... so we'll just agree Baines is a great FPL player (just not an essential one) haha!

            Spot on.

I had my reservations about him at the start. But I'm fully convinced now. He's been consistent this season and things on the Cs front can only get better. Not to mention he's a BAPS magnet as well.

There is no single coherent definition of "cover" to debate. Narrowly it could mean the idea that all players on a team are equally likely to pick up points (boo). Broadly it could mean simply factoring fixtures into your transfer plans (yay).

        Getting hazard for chelsea cover.

        Getting chambers for arsenal cover.

Don't think there's anything ambiguous about that. If they mean your latter point then its being phrased weirdly.

So future footballers will be two footed robots according to this...

Only truly two footed prem league players I can think of are cazorla and lallana

it still amazes me how two footed Cazorla is, never seen anything like it. He actually picks a different one every time he takes set pieces

agree. He should be doing more for his talents. Lallana took both pens in the recent shoot out with his right foot.

It's amazing how many more aren't to be honest at that level. I suppose dominance takes over and you just want to do your best. I'm right footed but I've played left back most of my life cos our other full-backs left foot is chronic lol Now I'm pretty comfortable on it, and will turn out onto it and shoot with it even if I have time to put it onto my right.

Alexander Hleb. Is he still playing? Incredibly ambidextrous.

You are a rarity, I've found that whoever is left footed gets picked at left back/wing even if their left foot is a club

Lol I think left-footed players were in fairly short supply at our club at the time. That being said, they still wouldn't make the team unless they were good enough.

Pardew is great. You don't deserve him after the shameful easy he's been treated.

Of course my Chelsea player (Hazard) is only going to get 2/3 points as per usual.

Sterling > Fab for a hit is my only way to get a Chelsea player 😕

Forget that. Fabregas would have to get 2 assists for that to pay off with Sterling not doing anything.

Nah...not worth a hit. Fab not explosive enough.

But hey, this is the kind of fixture when he can get a Tadicesque haul.

      Best midfielder to own:

      A) Hazard
      B) Di Maria
      C) Sanchez

        this week it's Sanchez.

Next week it'll be di Maria again.

and in three weeks from now, Hazard.

the top 6-7 mids are so close in terms of points, something has to give.

i can pick an argument for and against any of those names, in addition to Sterling, Fabregas, Sigurdsson, Chadli, Tadic.
