Stick or twist? The dilemma of whether to hold key players dominated much of the discussion within the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as stubborn and risk-taking Fantasy mangers prepared to do battle in Gameweek 10.

Whether you’re looking to ditch or keep your main assets, there was a feast of information to gorge on throughout the week, with our hot topics, articles and members tables helping to finalise those last-minute transfer plans. We look back on all that activity and, as ever, find time to catch up on the latest ups and downs in our community competitions.

The Community Articles

The Puntmaster has been assessing potential replacements for Gylfi Sigurdsson after taking a look at the Swansea man’s declining attacking threat and poor upcoming fixtures. Our regular scribe was back later in the week with his regular trio of punts, including another potential midfield replacement for the Icelandic international, for those who fancy taking a chance on a differential.

The Sarjeant also turned up with his popular regular, offering up further analysis of current form throughout the Premier League. Meanwhile, Sticky Mockwell provided his report on the effectiveness of goalkeeper rotation over the opening nine Gameweeks. It provided a timely reminder on the merits of a pair of active, alternating stoppers.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

There are a multitude of factors to ponder ahead of Gameweek 10: the choice of options in midfield being a major consideration. Right now, there are a handful of premium midfielders vying for our attention, whilst a slump in output amongst some popular Fantasy picks, allied with the ongoing uncertainty over Diego Costa’s minutes, suggests that the forthcoming set of fixtures could shake-up mini leagues.

On one side of the battle lines there are the “Twisters” who are ditching the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Costa and Raheem Sterling without a second thought. In the other corner there are the “Stickers”, resolutely clinging on to their fading stars in hope that class is permanent and a revival is on the way. In our discussion on which camp will prevail this weekend, Jafalad was among those who believe Costa ditchers will be left disappointed.

Later in the week we pondered whether we should welcome this apparent break up of the template team . Baines on Toast was among those who joined the discussion, stating that, with so many good expensive midfield options and just five slots, it’s impossible to “catch ‘em all”.

Such is the tension surrounding this week’s transfer decisions, there was even talk that Sergio Aguero may falter due to Manchester City’s poor form and midweek injury concerns around David Silva and Yaya Toure. Demi sparked this discussion to gather the community’s derby day predictions. Meanwhile, Beavis proclaimed that, even without Silva, Aguero has the form to shine. His excellent number crunching certainly puts forward a compelling case for captaining the Argentine hit man, with or without Silva’s craft providing the ammunition.

Chelsea have arguably one of the best fixtures of the week as they entertain QPR at Stamford Bridge. However, with Jose Mourinho continuing to be vague over Costa’s minutes earlier in the week, Rickardinho was eyeing up other Chelsea options and urged the community to consider Oscar’s excellent recent form and his high points tallies against “lesser” sides.

Over on the other side of London, Agbonlahorse has been looking into Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck’s potential. He’s far from impressed and wonders whether cheap strikers at big clubs, such as Welbeck and Everton’s Steven Naismith, are duping us into thinking they will perform beyond their price tag.

In contrast, Everton’s defence may be expensive but is worth every penny, according to MOTR in his run down of the pros and cons of doubling up on the Toffees backline.

Wakey’s Falling Stars team regularly reveals others that are making a mockery of their price tag. Each week he builds an XI comprised of those that have suffered price falls below their initial valuation. Gameweek 9 was another success story for Wakey’s ensemble, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Swansea’s Wilfried Bony performing well. Valuation was also being discussed by Milanista, who issued another call to FPL to disclose the secret calculations behind their price changes.

Price is something the community’s weekly Scout Pick champions need to keep a close eye on as they take on the Scouts with just a 83.5m budget. Saniul brought some much needed credibility back to the title of Scout Pick Community Champion last week by beating Paul’s total. This week’s champion, Magerost, will be hoping to do even better with his election winning set of picks. Just a reminder that our search for a community champion now takes place in its own community article, published the Monday before each Gameweek at 10am.

Finally, Nighthiker took a look back at some of the pre-season bandwagon flops the community optimistically drafted in for Gameweek 1. Meanwhile, Evs embarked on a more jolly stroll down memory lane in his discussion about the season’s best players and moments so far.

The Members Tables

Liverpool’s poor form in front of goal was a key issue covered in this week’s members tables. In my assist imminent table Liverpool midfielders dominate, showing just how badly they need Daniel Sturridge back to convert the many chances they are still creating.

The Fantasy Freak specifically took a look at Raheem Sterling to see just how he compares to one of this week’s most popular transfers Alexis Sanchez. Liverpool’s Mario Balotelli rides high in Erlando’s table looking at trigger happy players who are notching up a prolific number of goal attempts. His poor goal scoring form is clearly not for the want of trying.

The Community Tournaments

The Tinkerman increased his lead in the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors league over second placed Mark.

Rasping Drive continues to top The Puffinboy Memorial Cup, for our veteran posters as well as the FFS Old Farts Club and the FFS Deadzone leagues.

In TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, Mr Rabbit hit the top score in Gameweek 9 with 74. There are now 997 teams left after 57 were eliminated after the safety score was set at 30.

The FFS UEFA Hockey World Cup reaches the semi-final stage in Gameweek 10. Here’s the latest from ENR looking back at the group stages and ahead to the weekend’s fixtures.

I wonder how many questions like "Aguero/Pelle/Welbeck to Diego Costa?" has there been over the last couple of days? It seems like every other post.

It amazes me how quick people were to sell such a massive player FPL wise, written off by lots for missing just two matches and they are now desperately falling over themselves to get him back before pens down. Conspiracy theories. Will he play, won't he? "Normally"

People are all over the place. Heads are going. Hair is being lost. Relationships and marriages are ending over a fantasy football transfer. Shall I? Shant I? People are going to any lengths necessary to get Costa back. People are scared by not having him for one or two weeks. Diego Costa is a drug. Class A. People are having withdrawal symptoms. This is what this is. Ownership is driving them crazy, insane. People are tossing and turning in the night, not being able to sleep. Trick or treat?

In the morning sat in rocking chairs in straight jackets. People want Costa back so much, that they are making emotional decisions. Sentimental decisions. Reckless decisions. They just need that fix. Just. one. more. fix......Must. have. Costa. People seem willing to damage their already fine teams and also happy to take out players with massive potential this week and the ones next. Aguero, yes AGUERO. Is suddenly not good enough anymore.

Oh and you can add "Sterling to Sanchez?" to that aswell. Thats another. 😆

Thing is I estimate about 90% of these already have it in their heads what they want to do and no matter what anyone says on here, they'll end up doing what they had in mind anyway.

So get your Costa and Sanchez in for a hit and be done with. Sleep well.

Diego, Diego, Diego what have you done?

Nature of the game I suppose. All stems from uncertainty and possibility. The problem is that people are impulsive and tend to think short term whereas this game requires long term planning. You have to be able to look 2-3 weeks ahead. I believe that if you sold Costa, you should stick with your decision (route I decided to embark on) and vice versa. If you decided to stick with him, then he stays for the long haul. The man has not played in 3 weeks, so if you think he is going to pick up right where he left off, then a) you've never played organized football at a high lever and b) you are just dreaming. Just my personal opinion. Bring on the naysayers.

The games always been about flavour of the month and fashions and getting on them before they start. But following what the majority is doing only gets you as far as that majority. To get ahead, you gotta get ahead.

Do we really think that Mourinho is going to be happy to effectively announce Costa as fit (even assuming he is) by playing him for 2x90 minutes in the next 2 games before the international break? Not sure I do given how unhappy he was last time out.

Demi, Muppet, Seamen et al. Lil help?

Transfer decisions are typically pretty straight forward. Don't always get them right, mostly wrong but, rarely are they this difficult.

    Aguero, Costa & Pelle
    Hazard, Sterling, Tadic, Siggy
    Terry, Chambers, Kaboul

    Costa & Kaboul > Welbeck & Baines
    Costa & Siggy > Berahino & Sanchez
    Hazard & Kaboul > Eriksen & Baines

I wouldn't be buying Welbeck. I understand it's a worry. And maybe it is worth a one week punt on a free. But it's very meh. I'd be selling Terry for Baines if anyone. And then maybe Pelle>Welbeck makes sense considering you have Tadic.

Although, I can't justify selling Terry before QPR, WBA, HUL, SUN, NEW, & STK over the next 10 weeks.

Especially when I'm carrying Kaboul & Spurs leaky defence.

        Precisely!

Also, not having Baines for Everton's run into Xmas will be missing out huge.
For 7.2mil there's no one who provides better value for the next 10 weeks.

        Yeah, 2TF, .3mil in the bank & team's linked if you're that keen. 😉

Does Sterling > Ramsey appeal instead, then you'd have 2 ft's next week too.

I'm just not sure i want to sell either Costa/Haz this week, as both are ripe for ripping QPR a new one, and wouldn't put it past both to get double figures.

Could do Haz and Kaboul > Eriksen and Baines next week

            Yeah!
            That's what I'm leaning towards.
A *do nothing* transfer this week & then reassess.

            Wanyam to Boyd
            Moore to Wisdom

The return of Walcott may make the Hazard switch an easier one.

Yeah, i agree with the professor, maybe a nothing transfer and freeing up funds in the process. As you're keeping Sterling, it doesn't give you much wiggle room for other big moves this week not involving Costa or Hazard.

Could use the QPR game to decide which of Costa/Haz you prefer going forwards and ditch the other.

Yun at 3.9 may be one to look at as a cheap defender. Nothing wrong with Wisdom or Boyd(Or even Obertan) either though

Agreed that Hazard's stats are worrying, but I think that you do have to take into account that there have only been 9 games so far this season so the small sample size needs to be considered. Over the last two years Hazard has been an great FPL asset and with full time penalty duties I don't see how he doesn't end up in the top 5 midfielders by the end of the season.

It's not *selling* Hazard as much as it's adding Baines.
He's starting a run of fixtures where he's the best value going.

Weigh Hazard & Kaboul vs. Eriksen & Baines & it doesn't seem as silly, yeah?

Costa has been converting nearly 40% of his shots (RVP converted 25% in his lights out 12/13).
Further, he's coming off an injury & I think that he may just come back down to earth over the next few weeks.

Sanchez has a totally sustainable conversion rate, & for whatever he lacks in goal threat he more than makes up for in his assist potential.

I brought in Costa and Hazard this week. For me Sanchez is the latest craze- a good craze who is a good buy but I don't think he's essential. It's amazing how it feels so right when he has scored double fixtures twice in a row, taking him to the top midfielder spot and has a plum fixture coming up next. However, I think after this week, you'd rather have Hazard. Amazing rank by the way. You must be pretty high in the HoF!

I've just looked at your squad- I think it's really good. Very envious of Aguero, Costa and Hazard; imo the 3 best players. I can see you dilemma though; how to use your free transfer. If you didn't have 2 this week, I would say leave your team as it is!

So, another option is to sit tight & just do a nothing transfer like ditching some dead weight.
Getting Boyd as my 5th mid for example.

It's not anything to sneeze at but, it's also well within a *margin of error* that'd I'd expect out of the RMT feature.

I use it as a guide but, need *big* differences to justify making *big* moves.

10pts over 5 games would be a little more like it, right?

Sure. I don't know if you are aware but I'm the guy who set up RMT so I'm pretty biased. 😀 Think of the tool as being able to ask Mark and Jonty what they think about decisions where they are confined to think within the confines of a statistically fitted model which is team-wise aligned to the betting markets. So are you saying you think those transfers will get you around than 10 points more over the next 5 fixtures? Or just that you'd be looking for more than 5 points over 10 games to make it worth it. I would ordinarily agree but I can't see many other ways to improve your team.

Depends if you have other Spurs/West Ham players on your squad. If you don't I would start Downing. West Ham offense runs through him whereas Spurs offense runs through Eriksen. Not sure why you said team, when you can argue West Ham is a better team than Spurs. Definitely more consistent, hence their table status.
