Steven Fletcher scores twice as Sunderland grab a win at Palace. Vito Mannone drops to the bench as Costel Pantilimon earns his first start of the season, whilst Fraizer Campbell is in the points for the third home match in succession for Palace.

Fletcher at the Double

The Scotsman took his tally to four goals and an assist in the last four as the Wearsiders clinched a vital victory last night. Like QPR’s Charlie Austin, Fletcher is another forward whose contribution is looking crucial to his side’s survival bid – Sunderland have only scored six goals in the last six Gameweeks and the 5.3-priced frontman has now played a part in five of them. With Everton, City, Chelsea and Liverpool in the upcoming five fixtures, though, few will be willing to consider Gus Poyet’s main men right now.

Mannone Benched in Black Cats Reshuffle

Poyet finally swung the axe on his error-prone stopper last night as Costel Pantilimon took his place between the posts for Sunderland. In spite of his recent poor form, Mannone had proven a reliable source of save points for Fantasy managers, having chalked up at least one point for saves in seven of his nine appearances, but after last night’s omission, his 9.9% of Fantasy Premier League owners will be looking for an exit rout.

Absences Build for Sunderland

The Wearsiders look set to be without a couple of key first-team players for this weekend’s home clash against Everton. Patrick van Aanholt laid on his second assist of the season but was stretchered off with a possible dislocated shoulder shortly afterwards, whilst Lee Cattermole was true to form and fell off the suspension tightrope after earning his fifth caution of the campaign. Poyet is likely to turn to Liam Bridcutt (who grabbed an assist last night) to sit in front of the back-four against the Toffees, whilst elsewhere in midfield, a goal for Jordi Gomez and assist for Will Buckley could ensure they retain their weekend starting berths.

Campbell in the Points Again

The Eagles may be struggling in front of their own fans this season, with just one home win in five, but their 5.2-priced striker continues to benefit from Neil Warnock’s attacking approach. Campbell had scored against Leicester and Chelsea in the previous two at Selhurst Park and grabbed a somewhat fortuitous assist thanks to West Brown’s calamitous own goal last night. With three goals, an assist and three bonus points in his last six now, he looks the man most likely to deliver under the new manager, with last term’s top scorer Jason Puncheon once again overlooked as Wilfried Zaha continued on the right.

Defensive Frailties Continue for Warnock

The Palace boss partnered fit-again Scott Dann with Brede Hangeland in the heart of defence last night, with Damien Delaney – available after serving a one-match ban – left out of the squad altogether. The 3-1 defeat means the Eagles now have just two clean sheets in ten under their new manager and have worryingly conceded at least twice in the other eight matches – 19 goals against is just one fewer than the top-flight’s most porous defence (QPR, with 20) and underlines how quickly their defensive assets have fallen in the post-Pulis era.

"Sam Allardyce is pretty well convinced Diafra Sakho will return for the match against Aston Villa.

And for the manager to mention it as this stage of the week means it’s 100 per cent certain given his usual natural caution in such matters.

Talking to the official site this morning he said: “We think Sakho will be back for the next game. We don’t think the shoulder is going to be too long. “It’s a cartilage problem so it’s bruised and the pain is still pretty tender but it’s getting better every day and hopefully he’ll be back for Aston Villa. If not, we have to cope with it and after that it’s the international break.

“The good thing is the goals are getting shared about the team. The goals we scored against Stoke were not gifts, they had to be quality and both were top quality.

“Even when we’ve got that quality when we’re not as good as the opposition, we’ve always got a goal threat. That changes games and it certainly changed the game against Stoke.”"

I currently have both Gotze and Koke (still undecided about Gotze myself though), went without Brahimi and bringing him back gw5, but I like Koke because he plays on day 1.

That might also be a problem with your team, you only have 5 playing on day one.

I'm worried about not owning Hazard of Fabregas though.

Am I right in assuming no one player is truly (near-)essential this season?
That is, so long as you own another well-scoring combination.

I have never owned Di Maria, Sanchez, Baines and Fabregas
I have however owned Costa, Aguero, and Tadic for their hauls, and Hazard

Seems to me there are a lot more possibilities this season, and it's just a matter of finding a good balance. Last year, my rank, and the rank of several others was severly crippled by not owning Ramsey, Yaya early enough.

Anyone else enjoying this season more than the last?

    1. Demí
      • 14 Years
      11 years, 1 month ago

Yes, i'd agree that nobody is essential in general. Too many expensive players who do well, and it's impossible to have them all. So it's about personal preference mainly.

Tadic was apparently essential after his Sunderland haul. Costa was essential before he got injured. Things change so quickly. There are players that can be close to essential e.g. Aguero, but his fitness and less returns away from home mean people can't get by without too.

No even if you make bad decisions you are likely to have a decent rank this season. I've made plenty of wrong ones and still within touching distance of top 10k

Was much ebenter last year when no one was guaranteed a good rank by simply following whatever was the popular move on this site

      1. Riazor
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 1 month ago

This is also true, but don't you feel last season was a bit of a freak season?
Even though I managed a "respectable" *cough* rank last season, I was outside the top million around GW14.

In any case, every season is different to the prvious one, and it's a matter of adapting your strategy as well. That being said, it's harder to make blatantly obvious mistakes, I think. Or I've just gotten lucky.

    4. JasonG123
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 1 month ago

Yes, in my opinion the fact that there are 9 midfielders above 50 points as well as other options means that there is a lot of room for personal choice in the mids. However, everyone's defence and forwards seem near identical, especially the defence.

      1. Riazor
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 1 month ago

This is also true, but I reckon there's quite a few people (on here and in general) with budget strikers and bigger mids, as opposed to those with more expensive strikers and a lighter midfield and defense (no ADM, Sanchez, Baines) like myself.

I'm guessing most players "in the know" will have something in between (only 1 of aguero/costa, or a sakho-type 3rd striker)

Try not to do this too often but how am i looking?

    Krul/Foster
    Baines/Moreno/Chambers/Duff/Wisdom
    Fabregas/Sanchez/Siggy/Wanyama/Downing
    Aguero/Costa/Welbeck

Nothing in the bank and used my transfers.

Looking at Moreno and Welbeck out over next few, to either bring in Sakho/Berahino and upgrade a defender, or Pelle and then downgrade Moreno.
