Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this Thursday evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Diego Costa is the leading candidate ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Sunderland this weekend. With a variety of options available, though, the summer signing has earned only 27% of the votes cast despite scoring in eight of his 10 appearances so far – he’ll fancy his chances of extending that run against a defence with a single shut-out in six.

Alexis Sanchez (14%) heads the chasing pack as Arsenal make their way to the Hawthorns. As evidenced by last night’s win over Dortmund, a move out to the left flank doesn’t seem to have diminished his prospects as he look to continue the form which has delivered five goals in the last four Gameweeks. Given that the Baggies have conceded twice in five of the last six, the visitors will be optimistic of returning to winning ways.

Man United’s home encounter against Hull brings Wayne Rooney and Angel Di Maria into contention. Both are backed by 12% heading into the Tigers clash – Louis van Gaal’s decision to roll out a 3-4-1-2 earned the Argentine a start up front against Arsenal last weekend, whilst Rooney’s goal and maximum bonus at the Emirates perhaps hints that he’s about to embark on a streak of goals. Certainly, with two clean sheets in their last 11, Steve Bruce’s defence have been anything but resilient as they head to Old Trafford.

In spite of his midweek hat-trick against Bayern, Sergio Aguero has been backed by just 7% of voters so far as Man City travel to Southampton. Given the Saints have conceded just one goal in front of their own fans, though, he clearly has his work cut out to deliver, having failed to produce the goods at home to Swansea last time out.

Eden Hazard and Wilfried Bony also look viable armband options this week, according to the votes cast so far. Both have persuaded over 5% to hand them the armband but, bearing in mind he’s managed just two assists on his travels, the Chelsea winger will need to improve his away displays to justify that show of faith. Bony has notched five times in the last six, and with a home encounter against Palace’s porous defence on his agenda, could well be set to extend that run.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Got 0.5 in the bank and a free transfer. Worth getting a 4.5 keeper in instead of Myhill, to rotate with Forster. If so, who do you reckon?

              No. It becomes factor more than ever. Casuals need to use their brain which they don't. Everything in this game involves some amount luck factor. It's not just Captaincy decision.

                Captain choice becomes obsolete if everyone chooses the same player (Suarez/Ronaldo), then it comes down to more skill than luck by choosing the right players and looking for team valuu...imho

      Kun? Costa?

      We all know Kun is fixture proof and Costa has 11 in 10 and is playing a team who has conceeded 8 and has only kept 3 clean sheets all season.

      Pretty good choices.

    Heaton (Mannone)
    Chambers Clyne Yun (Duff*, Wisdom)
    ADM Hazard Siggy Chadli* (Boyd)
    Aguero Costa Welbeck*

    2FT and £1.8 ITB

    What would you do for this GW?
    A) Welbz & Duff ---->Baines & Austin
    B) ADM & Welbz ------>Austin & Sanchez
    C) Duff & Welbz ------>Azpilicueta & Austin
    D) Duff -> Azpilicueta & save the other FT.

      Or do you rather go a bit punty ? Despite Swans lack of attacking stats I think Bony's gonna rip . Not interested in 6 points for a Captain . Potential for a brace home to Palace - Risk / Reward

      1. Lallana_
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 8 months ago

        If I had Rooney or Bony I would captain them. Unfortunately I have neither.

          Ok - Dont have Rooney either - would prob go him if I did. Then Costa , take a punt later ?

    3. Reedy
      • 15 Years

      Or...there's less pressure to conform so just have fun with it. A differential captain could give you a real boost up the rankings.

    Sanchez captain material then... thought WBA were better defensively but I guess i took my eye off the ball there on the team defending!

      That's surprised me too. I'm still not feeling it this week though, Arsenal are too prone to slip-ups.

    Take a hit for Clyne > Azpi?

    Defence is: Baines Clyne Dummett Duff Moore

    Duff is injured and Moore doesn't play or should I just play Clyne against City?

    Final thoughts on my WC - assuming injuries are ok which is better?:

    A) Chadli, Jedinak, Duff
    B) Diame / Bolasie (rotate), Trippier

    Any thoughts?

      Prefer A myself, keep in mind both Jedinak and Bolasie will be out come January for AFCON and Asia.

      As a palace fan, Jedinak is rarely going to score from open play but pen's and that FK (best FK this season!) mean he's worth a shout. However, Jedi loves a booking ... Bolasie is very 50/50 but has a diminished 'explosive' potential but at 5.4 (expensive to rotate) vs 5.1 would pick Jedi.

      Chadli also coming back from injury, may or may not affect his game and same goes with Duff
