The fallout from Sergio Aguero’s injury continues to be felt as many of his sellers find themselves with considerable funds still to spend. Our hot topics cover some of the poorly and well-priced options, while the community article section includes a fresh set of differentials for those looking to take a weekend punt. Our Members get creative and construct Tables focussing on a number of topics from attacking options and workaholic goalkeepers to those Manchester City players hoping to keep the goals flowing at the Etihad. Elsewhere, it’s all change at the top of some of our most prominent community leagues.

The Community Articles

Buoyed by seeing returns from two of last week’s three punts, The Puntmaster returned to offer up three more differentials.

The Community Champions are also on a high. Dusan Citizen managed to beat all three scouts last Gameweek, a feat this week’s champ JonnyCO7 will be keen to emulate.

Selecting Chelsea defenders is becoming something of a tricky task though as festive rotation begins to bite. The Consensus was on hand to assess the likely rests over December, with John Terry his tip as the most secure Chelsea defender.

Ludo dropped by with this intriguing analysis for those with two goalkeepers from the same team, while Gilles was back with his regular attacking potential article, looking ahead to the festive run in and beyond. Fantasynicks, meanwhile, assessed his key premium and budget options for Gameweek 17.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

With a single point for Leighton Baines and just five points for Diego Costa in Gameweek 16, there were plenty of community members starting to question whether their premium players are providing value for money.

Baines’s decline in recent weeks seems to be caused by Kevin Mirallas’ return from injury, according to Athletico Timbo who provided these key statistics showing how the Belgian actively takes away the England defender’s bonus point and assist potential. But with Mirallas picking up an ankle injury during Monday’s clash with QPR, Tinkerman considered whether a Baines renaissance could be on the cards should the Belgian remain on the sidelines over the festive period.

Expected to be on the bench for United tomorrow, Angel Di Maria could potentially provide value for money – he’s now priced at just 9.5m, after peaking at £10.2m in Gameweeks 8. Daniel wondered just how his imminent return will affect a team that has been excelling in terms of results during his absence.

QPR’s Charlie Austin is already proving exceptional value for money. Priced at just 6m, he has scored eight times this season and looks unstoppable at home. However, Shifty is concerned that even Austin may struggle to breach a WBA defence that travels to Loftus Road following back-to-back clean sheets.

At home, Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson is proving to be worth every penny of his 7m price tag. But with six success blanks away, McNulty says his owners ought to be considering improving on their 5th midfielder to ensure he can be benched when Swansea are on the road.

John Obi Mikel may be priced kindly at 4.4m but with just under 300 minutes playing time this season, he is arguably not even worth that budget tag. Berbinho’s Forehead wonders whether despite his meagre Fantasy returns Mikel could be the answer to Liverpool’s current malaise and add some much needed steel to their midfield.

Although the Chelsea man will not be featuring in the African Cup of Nations (ACoN) this January after his Nigeria side failed to qualify, there are plenty of other Premier League players set to pack their suitcases. Spatburgender popped by to give the latest run down of those who are set to participate at the ACoN or at the Asia Cup, which also takes place in the New Year.

One of the busiest discussions this week was sparked by Demel, who asked the community for their season ambitions, whether it be beating a rival, achieving a high rank or just one single great Gameweek.

Finally, D1sable put a call out for the community to post their results from using Gargamel‘s Gargatron tool, which uncovers some telling truths about our real Fantasy Football performance. D1sable’s results can be found here and reveal that he is certainly someone to ask for captaincy advice.

The Members Tables

Shots in the box was Hodgson87’s guide for his Members Table looking at team offensive statistics. This has a global filter with more recent form recommended.

Vougiedipond has taken a look at some weak defences that are making their goalkeepers earn their money. This is sorted by goal attempts conceded in the box.

Meanwhile, with Aguero out of the picture I’ve taken a look at Manchester City’s other potential goal scorers.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Leagues

The Tinkerman continues to top the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league, eight points ahead of myself, after I jumped into second place following Gameweek 16.

But in two other prominent community leagues it was all change at the top. Rasping Drive has been toppled from the summit of the Puffinboy Memorial Cup, to be replaced by Ciaran Lamont. While Adam Johnson is the new leader of the FFS Dead Zone league.

Elsewhere, Red Lightning brings us news of a January Wildcard League (352700-723212) in the Fantasy Premier League game. Scoring starts in Gameweek 21 and aims to see how effective our wildcards are.

The safety score was 42 in TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, which means there are 649 teams left after 40 were eliminated.

In @OFCProdigy‘s Scout Picks Challenge competition, loosely based on our own Scout Picks, Walsh, Mookie and Timtastic03 are among the high flyers.

The problem then will be take a free transfer on a saturday night or do the sensible thing and wait.

Im a big believer that value is important but you gotta pick when to move early and when to wait and suck up the drop. With 3 games left to play in the week this feels like a suck up the drop situation.

    Hey friends...Quick one please:
Is it worth a -8 to do Bolasie & Siggie to Eriksen & Downing? I have a feeling that they are going to do very well, but -8 might be crazy. Note that I have Bony and my rival has Eriksen.
    Cheers.

Yeah that's crazy talk. Not worth the -8 imo. You basically need both eriksen and downing to do something while bolasie (vs a depleted man city) and siggie do nothing

    Posted this last night.

I was far from confident when most of the scouts & team news section predicted Kolarov to start against Leicester. The Scout knew Pellegrini wouldn't rest both of his inform fullbacks all of a sudden in an away game so they did predict that only one of them would get a rest & unfortunately they picked the wrong one. Zaba had his rest last week so I believe it's Clichy's turn now. Kolarov is more suited for this kind of fixture anyway especially when they don't have a recognised striker & need some real attacking support from the left flank.

Worth noting that Kolarov started 3 games in 1st 7 GWs including the match against Chelsea before he got injured so obviously Pellegrini likes him. Clichy has played really well lately but regardless of that he wouldn't have played those many games if Kolarov wasn't injured. Based on that I predict fully fit Kolarov will start CPL, BUR & Clichy will start
wba, SUN in next 4. Clichy has played lot of games lately so I
fully expect Pellegrini to give him a rest tomorrow. I think he's a good alternative for Zaba at £0.7m cheaper due to him being more of an attacking threat & bap magnet and no City defender is certain to start all 4. The likes of Zaba, Mangala (if he gets YC vs wba), Demi (Rested for Boyata or Kompany if he returns) could easily miss the most profitable fixture (BUR). I'm not saying all of them will miss it but it's safe to say none of them are a certainty. If Kolarov starts tomorrow as expected then he's set start again on 28th. If you fancy a punt then he's a great bet this time IMO. If it goes completely wrong for some reason there's a winter WC available in 12 days.

Trying to guess squad rotations ends badly more often than it goes well imo. Zaba much more nailed and gets involved in attacks as well, admittedly not to the same level kolorov does

Decent logic, still think that Zaba and Kolarov have pretty similar attacking threat though. Zaba well worth the extra 0.7 imo.

Your last sentence is a bit misleading because nobody will use a WC just to get rid of a expensive defender who constantly gets rotated.

I meant if it goes horribly wrong it's not end of the world as you've WC to clean up the mess. You gotta use WC sooner or later. Are you going to waste your WC if your team is in good condition at the end of Jan? Matter of 3 weeks.

I see your point, but its generally more effective if you use your Jan WC later, as we have a better idea of DGWs.

Which would mean you would either have to use another transfer on getting rid of Kolarov or keep him for another three or four weeks.

Another thing is that Kolarov may come on late into games if City are looking for a goal.

    3. UnderstandablyDistraught

Whatever the other pros and cons in buying Kolarov, why would you consider buying a defender at this time of year who will, at best, start 50% of games?

      1. A Defender's Nightmare
        • 13 Years
        11 years, 3 months ago

Because those 50% of the games are very likely to be CPL & BUR. For Zaba it's likely to be CPL, wba, SUN.

If Kolarov plays he will clatter Bolasie with an ill-judged lunge inside the penalty area and give away a penalty. For all his attacking prowess people seem to forget that Kolarov isn't actually a particularly good defender.

Don't hate the idea of a punt. It is very high risk and possible high reward. I prefer to spend transfer and start players I think are "nailed on". I know Man City fixtures are great (why I bought Hart) but I don't think it's worth trying to get a piece of that if your piece isn't even guarantee half the starts during those fixtures.

    False 9.

Please feel free to correct this, thinking out loud.

From what i remember the player who plays the false 9 spends most of his time with his back to goal. His job is to be the focal point, hold it up and lay off to/ play in midfielders who are pushing up behind him or lay out wide.

Personally think the we want the player behind the false 9

I think so. The false 9 drops deeper, pulling the centre backs out of position and allowing the midfielders to get beyond him / her.

Anyway, this is what MEN writers think:

So captaincy is set to be a nightmare for the next month....

In Gameweek's 19 + 20 Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal all have away fixtures.

City have great fixtures (BUR, SUN) but no truly convincing captaincy options as of now.

Liverpool are the other "big" side (no jokes please) with nice fixtures (SWA, LEI)

Could it be time to draft Sterling back in? He's to 8.3 and looked very threatening against United.

Might end up being the best option, especially if he gets a haul today.

Surely a 6.0 striker topping the captains poll on back to back game weeks would be unprecedented?

Crazy fpl times we live in

If he proves he's worth it, Eriksen -> Sterling could be the way to go.
But, by GW 19 will know which City player is captain material.

It's the deadzone so I'll post this for any Aussies and cricket fanatics - sitting here watching the 2nd test I can't but help remark how Shane Watson still has a spot in our test side. He is truly terrible and is still riding on the glory of the summer of 09/10 or whenever it was that he actually made a difference. Yes, he may be able to hold up an end.. but then pick him as a batting all rounder, not our number 3.

Some may say, 'but no one is busting the door down'

I say this to you fine people... Shane doesn't even have a door to be broken down. In the world of dwelling he is essentially a tent. Anyone... any grade cricketer could replace him and do better than he has over the last 3 Australian summers.

aye - his bowling is more useful than is batting 😀
