My Fantasy Football New Year’s resolution? Stop trying to be clever.

Over the past three transfers (Andy Carroll, Raheem Sterling and Aleks Kolavrov), I’ve chosen to ignore the obvious option for fear of playing too safe (Charlie Austin, David Silva, Alan Hutton) and in all three cases I’ve been burned and seen my rank tumble.

I’ve lost twenty points, a free transfer and the option to captain Silva against Sunderland through those decisions.

Maybe I’m being too harsh on myself: perhaps I shouldn’t judge the merits of my choices on short-term losses and gains. Perhaps Sterling will rip Leicester apart today. Perhaps Carroll will clear his head and skittle the Baggies back four.

It’s difficult to resist that kind of knee-jerk reaction, however: to immediately assess the success or failure of our decisions on the returns of single Gameweek.

The problem here is that my other major flaw is to insist on backing my decisions for too long when it’s clear that an error has been made.

I’d never consider opting to trade Sterling to Silva today, or even Carroll to Austin. Both transfers could easily help me to a bigger points tally but, having committed to these players, I’m not able to admit the error and take what appears to be a backward step. I’ll probably hold them both for too long, while Silva and Austin go on punishing me and putting further daylight between myself and those who wisely played the percentages.

Kolarov has to go: I’d have needed to quaff a lot more wine last night in order to decide otherwise. A belated move for Hutton is again the obvious route to take but, once more, I’m sitting here pondering Aaron Cresswell or Mamadou Sakho.

It all harks back to a previous preamble just under a year ago, in which I discussed whether the essence of playing Fantasy Football was to avoid being risk averse: to look to play the equivalent of the Hoddle 50-yard “Hail Mary” rather than play the “Wilkins way” with a sensible sideways pass.

Kolarov will always excite me more than Hutton, but by 5pm on Sunday, the thrill of gambling on the Serb’s buccaneering runs had given way to bitter disappointment. I should look for my thrills elsewhere: I could have just lost a tenner on a Kolarov to score rather than deal with the indignity of having to chase Hutton’s points a Gameweek later.

So, if I want to be a better Fantasy manager in 2015, I probably need to temper the urge to take risks. The spectacular may seem enticingly within reach but, ironically, it’s often pure fantasy.

I know all this but still, with an hour to go before I send the boys over the white line once again, I’m searching for a way – any valid reason – to avoid buying Alan Hutton. I’m pretty sure there used to be a few hundred. What a difference a year makes.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hutton would be a very short term transfer Mark. Do you plan on wild carding early?

Leicester away next isn't awful. At 4.3, he's a comfortable fourth or fifth defender. I've 2.0 to upgrade Yun and Bartley next.

Just not sure 1FT will be good value for what you'll get in terms of points for the next two fixtures. Here's hoping he gets two cleanies.

I went for Vlaar with the plan that he'll bring me could offer me nailed on Manu def cover, set piece goals and a price rise - but am I playing the long ball game too?

    Who to play?

    A) Siggy (qpr)

    B) Downing (WBA)

    C) Dummett (BUR)

You can cross Dummet off that list. I'd say it's a coin flip between Siggy and Downing. Siggy may slightly edge it tho. FK's and penos.

My Fantasy Football New Year’s resolution is the keep having a team which is different than normal and not template..
Many people don't generally like my team because I don't go for the Obvious transfers (Like in the beginning not choosing Siggy and Costa, last season not having Yaya or Ramsey in my team for the whole season and still managing to finish in 3K rank) ...but thats what I love to do Have a different team and get a good rank!

Is it magic? It's a rather dark, primitive magic if it is.

Didn't he used to demand the players take cold showers when he bossed in the lower leagues? Pretty sure his methods are akin to a drill instructor rather than a wizard 😉

On the subject of the preamble - I've got a horrible one...

Siggy at QPR or Kane vs Chelsea.

Currently with Siggy because I have Ivan so I'm torn for that Spurs game but it is on TV and it's always nice to have two strikers in the live game (I have Costa).

Oh my, Mark, how low have you gone... This is an issue you should not be having at all. If you have a FT, transfer one out to have someone better. If you can't make transfers, then just trust your head and forget about Hoddling with your stupid heart.

He did Kolarov who is not playing (probably) to a cheap reasonably solid defender that will enable him to upgrade elsewhere-what's wrong with this?

        1. Camp No No
          • 12 Years
          11 years, 4 months ago

What is wrong is that he is in a situation where he has to play either Siggy away at QPR or Kane against Chelsea. It should have been avoidable. Also, that his issue to take care of is to replace Lolarov now. He has let his team to quite a bad condition. The January wildcard comes in a good time for him.

        2. Camp No No
          • 12 Years
          11 years, 4 months ago

Did he make that Lolarov transfer already?

If you haven't made you choice yet, Mark, choose Sakho. That's a good transfer right now and you're going to wildcard soon anyway.

Those transfers you made before only seem bad for there were better ones available, but they were good punts. The best luck in future.

Depends on total value of your team, will it mean that you have 4 more expensive mids plus a cheapie then i say yes but if it means you have just 2 or 3 premium mids and 2 cheapies then no.

2 ft's, but thinking of letting one go to waste. How silly would this be?

    Team as follows:

    Foster/hamer

    Zab/Azpi/clyne/Bruce/dummet

    Yaya/haz/Sanchez/downing/Boyd

    Costa/Austin/bentekkers

    Any thoughts appreciated!

If you don't use any you will end up a slightly higher overall rank when you tie on points with people, it goes down to number of transfers I believe. You could offshoot Yaya a game early if you really had to use it but it's a risk.

Anything to change? 1ft, 2m in bank.

    Guzan
    Taylor Wisdom Zaba (OShea Chambers)
Yaya (c) Downing Sanchez Fabs (Siggy)
    Austin (vc) Costa Sakho.

Tempted to save, 2FT to remove Yaya.
    benching Siggy correct?

Leicester (along with Everton) have conceded the most goals in the league (31) in 19 games and are bottom of the pile on NYD which generally means relegation.
    Sterling(c)?
Does basic facts outweigh a stubborn Sun defense that traditionally do reasonably well at the Ethiad negating A silva/Yaya (c)?
