The New Year heralded in a number of injury concerns earlier today, with treatment rooms around the country opening their doors to accommodate a host of new arrivals.

Arsenal
Mathieu Flamini missed today’s 2-0 loss at Southampton through injury, whilst Arsene Wenger has
confirmed Lukas Podolski was unavailable after sustaining a groin problem.

Aston Villa
Skipper Ron Vlaar was forced off during the first-half of today’s goalless draw against Palace with a knee injury. Post-match, Paul Lambert confirmed the Dutchman is set to be assessed prior to the weekend:

“I am not 100% sure but he’s thinking it could be the same sort of thing that he hurt in the World Cup. It’s his knee. We will probably know more tomorrow. He will go for a scan. Hopefully it’s not too bad. He thinks it might be similar to the one he had in Brazil. We will have to wait and see.”

Burnley
Sean Dyche is counting the cost of today’s comeback draw at Newcastle, after Jason Shackell (calf), Dean Marney (illness) and Kevin Long ((ankle) were forced off. The Burnley boss is sweating over the latter’s availability, with the debutant stretchered off in the 3-3 stalemate:

“Kevin is the big question mark. It needs to settle and the medical team will get on that over the next couple of days. We are hopeful Shacks is not as bad as we maybe first thought and Dean is just sickness. He was almost vomiting before the game and it is a strange one. ”

Everton
Kevin Mirallas started on the left of a front three away to Hull but was withdrawn at the break, with Roberto Martinez confirming:

“Kevin was feeling a little bit sore at half-time and we needed everyone to be 100% in order to be dynamic.””

Hull
Andrew Robertson is set for x-rays on his ankle and foot after a challenge from Everton’s Mo Besic forced him off on 23 minutes today. Liam Rosenior was withdrawn before the hour mark due to a hamstring problem, whilst Gaston Ramirez was subbed off at the break as a result of his ongoing groin complaint.

Leicester
Danny Drinkwater was replaced by David Nugent on 36 minutes after picking up an injury during the 2-2 draw at Liverpool.

Liverpool
Adam Lallana’s recent run of form was halted earlier today due to injury. The Reds midfielder was subbed off early in the second period, with Brendan Rodgers confirming post-match:

“He’s got a tweak in his thigh, so we’ll see how that is.”

Mario Balotelli missed out altogether after sustaining an injury in training.

Man United
Ashley Young could be set for a period on the sidelines, according to Louis van Gaal, after he was forced off during today’s draw at Stoke.

“He has a hamstring injury. He’s out for many weeks, I think. But I’m not a doctor so we have to wait for tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.”

Newcastle
The Magpies look poised to be without Steven Taylor for the remainder of the season. Caretaker boss John Carver confirmed the worst after the centre-half was taken off during today’s draw with Burnley:

“Unfortunately there’s bad news with Steven. It looks like he’s snapped his Achilles tendon – the other one (to which he injured against Chelsea in December 2011). It’s a fresh injury and I’m so disappointed for him because he got off to a great start. He’s a good character and he’ll deal with it. We’ll make sure he’s looked after and everything will be done properly.”

Southampton
The Saints’ in-form wide man Sadio Mane was withdrawn after scoring his third goal in as many matches in today’s win over Arsenal. After the 2-0 triumph, Ronald Koeman is uncertain whether Mane – who is soon set to fly to the African Cup of Nations with Senegal – will be available for the weekend FA Cup clash with Ipswich:

“I have to wait until Friday, I don’t know what happened exactly, we will know more then if he is available for Sunday or not.”

Sunderland
Santiago Vergini was withdrawn on 77 minutes after picking up a knock in the Black Cats’ narrow loss at City. Lee Cattermole failed to make the Etihad trip due to a groin problem, Gus Poyet has confirmed.

Tottenham
Erik Lamela missed today’s stunning win over Chelsea with a minor calf complaint, whilst Ryan Mason limped off with a hamstring injury in the first period.

West Brom
Craig Gardner missed the Baggies 1-1 draw at West Ham with a calf problem, whilst fellow midfielder Graham Dorrans was subbed off through injury late on.

West Ham
The Hammers have concerns over today’s scorer Diafra Sakho, who was forced off with a recurrence of a back problem. The Senegal striker will be hoping to recover in time to fly off on international duties in the African Cup of Nations next week.

“We have to have a scan on it and see what condition his back is in. Obviously it’s a similar situation to when he last came back from [international duty with] Senegal, so on Friday the lads will send him for a scan and we’ll see how it goes from there”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yaya --> Fabregas is the obvious move, but I can't ignore Spurs' fixtures. I'm now considering Eriksen & Chadli. What should I do?

Honestly, I'm very surprised it took a performance of that caliber for people to appreciate Kane's qualities. The signs were CLEARLY there prior to last night's game vs Chelsea.
He should have scored first time around @Stamford Bridge really. (Hit the post)

Even before that, back in late October when he finished the game as the GK after bagging a hatty vs Asteras Tripolis in Europa League, I was able to recognize that this kid may have something special. Shortly after in GW10, Poche put him in the last 30 min vs Villa and single handedly changed the dynamics of that game. Completely took over and Spurs ended up edging 2-1 last minute.

    Still, I wasn't entirely convinced.

It took a couple more games, after closely watching him GW12-14 where he scored @Hull, had an assist vs Everton and gave Chelsea's D trouble. That was enough for me, I didn't need any more evidence. Picked him up GW15 for 4.9m.

Looking back, I think I comprehend why he has thrown so many people off..

    His price tag.

It took Poche himself several months to figure out what kind of character he had in that squad. A home grown player from the club's academy surely couldn't outplay multi-million dollar oversea signings!

Most fantasy managers couldn't fathom to look past his price tag either. A ~5m striker surely couldn't deliver the points week in and week out, or at least consistently enough to keep on your team. His 'price tag' is the same reason why many of those who did own him in the top 10K, benched him this week.

    TOP10K
    24.4% Benched Him
    18.5% Played Him
    😯

A 5-3 scoreline doesn't come around that often, and I think this particular game will stick in peoples mind for a long long time.

    For better or for worse,
A GW like this is the reason we play this game.

    Form over fixtures people.
Kane has proved that. And maybe Zabaleta did as well. 😉

Form is also the chelsea defence/team. It was a freak result and the decision to bench Kane was a sound one. It's just that sometimes things go a bit mental in a football match. Don't try to make yourself out to be some sort of guru for playing him.

            def was unintentional
sometimes its hard to acknowledge via text

just trying to point out that many managers elected to even go 3-5-2 for possibly first time this season to have him on the bench, most likely due to his price tag.

We all know he was a good player, that's why we have him already.

For me it came down to Siggy v QPR or Kane v chelsea. Since only a mad man would bet against a chelsea team that have looked like a machine this season I and plenty others I'm sure went Siggy. It didn't work, it's painful but it happens in ff. doesn't mean it was a poor choice, just unlucky.

      Asteras Tripolis means nothing.

Aston Villa, a team who struggle towards end of games, down to 10 men, gets a lucky goal.

      Hindsight is 20/20.

i think it really depends on the rest of your team: it was the right decision to bench him ahead of a nice 5-man midfield that many players had. But if he was benched ahead of someone 'benchable' such as Boyd, Wanyama or the like then one can really say it was wrong to bench Kane

Never mind these miserable Canutes Ruberx, I enjoyed your post. I can't believe I ignored the evidence of my eyes and went for Andy Carroll over Kane just before Christmas. Discounting players because of their price or hanging onto them because of their pedigree is a killer in this game, as Kane and Baines have shown in recent weeks.

yes, plus the old faithful 'form over fixtures'. I bought Tekkers iso Kane and played the fixture card - meh 🙁
Anyway, we are all smarter in hindsight. No-one could have predicted such a rout by the Spurs.
Happy New Year and move on 🙂

Doing Yaya + Bony > Hazard + Kane this week for free leaves me with 7,2 mil in the bank. Is it worth taking a hit to use them? They could be used on upgrading:
    A) Downing who have 6 points in 3 matches to someone like Silva Or Sanchez.
    B) Austin to either Jovetic or a Man U forward (RvP or Rooney)
    C) Jagielka to a better defender, but unsure of which one to get until late WC is activated. Not doing this forces me to play Janmaat (Chelsea A) next week.
    D) Dont take a hit.

My team looks like this after my 2 free transfers and 7,2 mil in the bank.

    DDG-McCarthy
    Janmaat-Wisdom-Cissokho-Clyne-Jagielka
    Fab-Eriksen-Downing-Haz(C)-King
    Costa-Austin-Kane

    Thanks! 🙂

Bit scuppered now as also have Heaton and think that Ings is the next guy to do a Kane/Austin.

So Stevie G is leaving Lpool at the end of the season which is undoubtedly going to be my saddest moment in football in my life for me probably.. Even sadder than watching lpool lose last season to Chelsea whilst drinking in a bar by myself in Ibiza then lose the title race..

To cheer me up I was wondering what everyones saddest moments in football have been? 🙂

Y.N.W.A Stevie proud to have been able to say I've watched you live atho it was for England rather than for the best club in the wold!

Watching Zidane lose the World Cup for France. Sad watching someone, who is usually as calm as a Hindu cow, lose control like that.

Knockaert missing the penalty vs Watford and they scored from the counter attack... Knocking us out of the playoffs.

Got 2 FTs and 0.3 itb. Gonna do Yaya-> Sterling and think it's time for Baines to go but for who?

    A) Zabaleta
    B) Clichy
    C) West Brom Defender? (Best option?)
    D) other?

He's the "obvious" WBA choice, but we don't know yet what Pulis's preferred back 4 will be so it might be risky.

Dawson, Wisdom and Pocognoli have been WBA's outstanding defenders this season. If they're all fit, they'll start.

Oh, and Lescott..... their starting back four are definitely the guys.

Once Pulis comes in, they'll be grinding out clean sheets lilke nobody's business.

Esp. if Pulis gets them drilled well and Brunt & Dorrans are bossing the midfield and cleaning up everything before it even touches the defense.

I've got 2 FTs and I'm struggling to think of transfers...

    Guzan, Foster
    Baines, Zabaleta, Wisdom, Azpi, Dummett
    Mata, Hazard, Sterling, Downing, Silva
    Kane, Costa, Austin

    How about:
    1) DEF (probably Baines) to Schlupp
    2) MID (Mata or Downing) to ???

Morning fellas. Considering ditching Rooney and/or Siggy. What would you do with this lot:

    Guzan
    Zabaleta, Terry, Hutton
    Sanchez, Siggy, Downing, Hazard
    Rooney, Costa, Austin

subs: Gilks, Boyd, Naylor, Chester --- 2 FT's, 2.2 ITB

    A) Rooney -> Kane/Jovetic
    B) Siggy -> Chadli/Eriksen/Sterling

Is this a good WC team:
    Foster (Alnwick)
    Schlupp Wisdom Terry Keane (Alderweireld)
Hazard (C) Sanchez Chadli Mata (Walcott on bench till fully fit)
    Van Persie Kane (Perez)

I swapped him for Austin. Short-term punt with Spurs having form and fixture on their side for the next few GWs. WC-ing late.

Johnson (LIV) - Silva (eve) - Sanchez (STK) (VC) - Hazard (NEW) (C)

    Happy new year all!

Pretty dismal week with 38 points but still just at the top of cash mini league. Any advice for next week, don't want to wildcard yet.

    Fabi / Krul

    Alcaraz / Wisdom / Zaba / Azpili / Cresswell

    Hazard / Sanchez / Siggy / Silva / Boyd

    Costa / Benteke / Austin

    1FT 0 ITB

I'm thinking probably zaba out as he is a rotation risk and hasn't got me anything in the last few weeks! maybe fora sneaky Rafael punt? or Debuchy?

    What do you think?

Kane for Benteke looks plausible. The rest of your team is pretty damn good.

I assume you'll play Fab, Wisdom, Zaba, Azpi, Hazard, Sanchez, Siggy, Silva, Costa, Tekkers, Austin?

        Cheers mate.

Kane is definitely an option, being a Gooner though its hard to put him in! Only put Benteke in this week so not sure whether to give him another week or not, has leicester away so not a bad fixture....

yep exactly what i'd play but perhaps cresswell over zaba.
