Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Chelsea’s home encounter with managerless Newcastle makes Eden Hazard the runaway leader of this week’s Captain Poll. The Belgian’s outstanding festive form has seen him rise to the top of the midfield standings, and having scored in five of his last six at the Bridge – serving up four sets of double-figure hauls in the process – he’s earned 43% of the votes cast.

Hazard’s team-mate Diego Costa has been selected by 15% of voters. The summer signing has also scored in all but one of his last six but has delivered only one 10+ points return since Gameweek 4.

Harry Kane’s rise to Fantasy prominence is underlined by his spot in third position. After serving up an 18-point haul at home to Chelsea on New Year’s Day, just under 11% are looking to hand the Tottenham frontman the armband as he heads to Palace.

Alexis Sanchez is backed by 6% as Arsenal prepare for the visit of Stoke. With Olivier Giroud back in contention, however, the Chilean may be set for a role on the flank once again, though his last six scores at the Emirates (13, 16, 2, 9, 9, 10) underlines his potential, with only United keeping him at bay.

Raheem Sterling’s role in the centre of Liverpool’s new 3-4-3 formation has convinced 4% to back him for the trip to Sunderland. A goal and assist in his last three is hardly prolific, though the Black Cats’ run of a single clean sheet in their last seven at the Stadium of Light, compared to four shut-outs in five on the road, suggests they are more liable to concede when going on the offensive in front of their own fans.

Promoted pair Danny Ings and Charlie Austin have persuaded around 3% of Fantasy managers to select them as captain as the duo go head-to-head at Turf Moor. In spite of the R’s toils away from home, Austin has scored at the likes of Southampton, Chelsea and Arsenal and bagged a goal and assist against the Clarets in the 2-0 win at Loftus Road last month. With a single strike in seven, the goals have dried up for Ings of late, though the R’s dire form on the road offers reason for optimism here.

Is Lescott best one week defender punt or maybe Koscielny perhaps? Already have Terry.

i was thinking Debuchy - but i only have 5.3m to spend. Kos or Mert might work well.

Debuchy more nailed on and (should be) less injury prone now, I'd say.

Want to fit Falcao in to this team next week with 2FT and 0.2 ITB, any suggestions? Ideally want to keep Costa as it then gives me options when Aguero is back!

    Foster Panti
    Azpi Zab Skrtel Hutton Yun
    Haz Alexis Silva Downing Sterling
    Kane Costa Austin

    Thanks

I've seen a decent amount of chatter around here involving dropping Silva. Seems to me he is in excellent form........perhaps the form of his life.

The way he looks now, the formation doesn't matter. He's always up near the front of attack and is looking very impressive. I'm keeping him for sure, that much I know.

Guess the fixtures are a bit tough coming up, however. Something to take into account.

Still think he's worth keeping. Often times, when I sit a player due to the fixture at hand, it blows up in my face anyways. I'm starting to think that putting too much stock in fixtures is an empty approach. Kane against Chelsea perfect example. How many of us Kane owners had him on the bench for that one? I know I did......still hurts.

That sounds like a good way to do it. Silva won't do as much with a striker back now. United have great games coming up.

I'd downgrade Pantilimon to Krul or Myhill and upgrade Trippier to Alderweireld, better long-term defensive rotation.

Double Spurs is unnecessary, how about Tadic for Eriksen? Otherwise Chadli is better value than Eriksen.

Ayoze could be a decent alternative to Berahino, Newcastle rotate well with Spurs (and I assume you will play 3-5-2).

How much do you recon Ched Evans would be if the club he signed for got promoted to the Premier League? 9m? I would sign him instantly on principle and captain him every week.

Why would he be 9m he has never proved himself in the premier league, he has a decent goal scoring record in lower division football and that's all plus when do you see strikers at newly promoted clubs costing 9m

      I was wrong....

Q: So what is protection all about?
A: If a player is red or yellow flagged for 2 days or more, once their (i) icon goes back to grey, they are protected for 8 days.

Q: What does that effectively mean?
A: It means that for the next 8 days their price is frozen. It can neither rise nor fall. Once the 8 days is up, the player’s NTI or NTO is reset to zero and the normal rules of increases/decreases kick in from there.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 11 Years

Which means 10 days at least in most cases. Rare that a player goes from 0% to 100% in one day especially when they already have a significant ownership base.

It is probable that Aguero doesn't rise until GW 23 and since the fixture that GW is Chelsea (a) his price may not start to rise significantly till GW 24.

    Who is better WC pick:

    Lescott 4,9m or
    Toby 5.0m

Both scored 1 goal till now, Toby has 1BP and Lescott has 6BP. Already have SoT defender and Foster as a keeper so surely it is gonna be double up or even triple up. SoT looks like better team for CS's but Pullis has done wonders and in the past.

A 7 and a 5 year old are in their bedroom.

"You know what?", says the 7 year old, "I think it's time we started swearing. When we go downstairs for breakfast I'll swear first then you."

"OK", says the 5 year old.

Mum asks the 7 year old what he wants for breakfast. "I'll have Coco Pops, b*tch."

WHACK, he flew out of his chair, crying his eyes out.

Mum looks at the 5 year old and says sternly, "Well, what do you want?"

To which the 5 year old replies, "Dunno, but it won't be f**king Coco Pops."

Would you play Boyd instead of Downing this GW or could this backfire?

Wasn't planning on playing the WC for another 2 weeks but with 0.0 left an Aguero already coming back I pulled the trigger, bet my old team outscores my new one now 🙂
