Paul Lambert dipped into the winter transfer market for the first time yesterday by acquiring the attacking midfielder Carles Gil from Valencia on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The under-fire Aston Villa boss talked up his new playmaker’s versatility as he looks to bring the fans back on board after a series of poor displays led to many signing an online petition calling for his dismissal:

We’ve been on the lookout for a creative player and he will certainly bring that extra element to the side. He’s only 22 years of age but he will come here and give us something I don’t think we have at the moment. He can play either role, coming in off the sides or playing in behind as well. He can create chances and get those chances put away. He has a lot to offer and I know we can get the best out of him.

The History

A product of the Valencia youth system, the diminutive Gil was handed his debut for the club’s B team as a 17-year-old in 2009 and went on to score five goals in 53 appearances over three seasons in the lower leagues. Farmed out on a two-year loan to Second Division Elche in 2012/13, he was a key component in a side that clinched promotion to La Liga and also helped the club retain their top-flight status the following season, producing a total of five goals and three assists in 66 appearances. Gil returned to his parent club last summer but, having failed to secure a regular role, he produced just a single goal and assist in 11 matches for Los Che. On the international stage, he has played once for the Spain Under-21 side and provided an assist in a 4-0 win over Austria.

The Prospects

With a single goal scored in their last six league matches, Villa will surely welcome the young playmaker with open arms. Bearing in mind that Andreas Weimann is top for assists, with a mere two to his name thus far, it’s glaringly obvious that Lambert needs more creativity in his side to help get the misfiring Christian Benteke back amongst the goals.

Predominantly left-footed, Gil offers Lambert an option on either flank in a 4-3-3 and could even be handed the role in “the hole” behind Benteke if the Villains boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Reports in the Spanish press regard Gil as a technically gifted player, with impressive vision and ball control that is likely to get the Villa fans off their seats. Looking at the stats, though, his 40 key passes in La Liga last season – although more than any Elche team-mate – was still some way behind Ashley Westwood’s total of 64 for the Midlands outfit in 2013/14, for example.

With his side now sitting just three points ahead of the drop zone, Lambert certainly hasn’t splashed the cash for the new boy to sit on the bench. Gil – who could also be handed set-piece duties – is expected to be immediately installed to the Villa starting XI as the Midlands outfit desperately try to engineer a scramble up the table.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a maximum price of 5.5 looks the likeliest scenario in Fantasy Premier League, though with upcoming matches against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, Gil hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts. The fixtures do take a turn for the better in Gameweek 25, though taking their recent toils into account, Lambert’s side need to vastly improve before we can seriously look at their attackers once again.

I prefer Arsenal going forward than defensively. Despite being out for so long Kos is still 5.9m isn't he? I'd get Clyne for that and change Gardos to Chambers, perhaps if you must have Arsenal defensive cover.

      Rest is template, so good.

After City I'm banking on them tightening up again. If Kos is fully back that's very good for their defense. I'm not sure Chambers is nailed as Bellerin is better at RB than he is imo. Could share game time at least. Kos is a BAP magnet when they get cleanies so I think their good run of fixtures could be fruitful with him. Bit of a risk but I want a couple non template players in my WC (him and Tadic as of now)

        Cheers!

Sound reasoning there and you're right about the gaps. Thing is Arsenal are very likely to win games 2 or 3 nil (if they do keep a CS) than 1-0. So be wary of that.

Oh I know I'm an Arsenal fan after all! 😉

Hard to forget how solid Kos and Mert were last season. Kos being injured this season has really hurt their defense I think. Definitely a bit of a punt but I really think they'll get a good run of clean sheets after city. Also the slight chance we actually get a defensive mid transfered in 🙂

Time to say goodbye to Lord Hutton? Had him from the start but on WC and:
    -No Vlaar,
-got LIV ars CHE in the next 3
-Villa defensive stats not the greatest.

    PVA

it really is bargain basement though.

Just looked and Sunderland have kept 2 clean sheets at home thus far...and Villa have kept 3. So much for doubling up on Sunderland defenders in order to play them at home!!

Might keep some variety after all

        1. BeachBadger

          11 years, 2 months ago

Villa seem very much a defensive unit. They have to be. They can't score 😆 I like Sunderland but I feel their clean sheets will come against less likely opposition, shutting up shop against the big teams and going on the offensive against the smaller ones. Makes their CS's even harder to predict.

The only one I would ditch Hutton for would be a 3.9m maybe like Baird if nailed on at WB.

As fopr me, Im going PVA, Baird and Hutton so I dont really have this dilemma unless Zouma or some other defender becomes a must have 😆

Austin and Kane are a very hard choice. I went with Kun Costa Austin on my WC. I see lots of goals from him in their fight to avoid relegation. On pens is a huge bonus too

  14. Norco
    • 11 Years

On a WC and unsure if to go with Costa or without… It is absolutely doing my head in! Currently in the Top10k and chasing a ML leader who I know for a fact has bought in Aguero this week along side Costa.

    WITH Costa:
    Pants/Krul*
    Terry Berty Hutton* PvA Wasi
    Sanchez Hazard Silva Chadli* Boyd
    Aguero Costa* Kane

    WITHOUT Costa:
    Pants/Heaton*
    Terry Berty Clyne* PvA Wasi
    Sanchez Hazard Silva Fabregas* Boyd
    Aguero Kane Austin*

    Highlighted differences:
    Heaton vs Krul
    Clyne vs Hutton
    Fabregas vs Chadli
    Austin vs Costa

    Costa pros:
    Scores goals
Feels somewhat safer having him in the squad
Can switch to almost anyone if he is injured

    Costa cons:
Hardly gets baps even if he scores a goal.
Expensive (Fabregas who is cheaper provides assists, baps and cleansheet point)
Major squad restructure to bring him in after a WC
Reduces dollar spread over midfield and defense

Any thoughts on the whole to Costa or not to Costa?

It's a question of total points really.

      Will A) Clyne+Fab+Austin outscore B) Hutton+Chadli+Costa?.

      This is currently;

      A) 92+114+107 = 313
      Versus
      B) 60+100+103 = 263

      50pts in favour of A

Very interesting way of putting it, the main difference in there is Clyne vs Hutton, where Clyne has produced 32 more points of the overall difference of 50. Mmm

After reading the first couple of pages on here it's obvious that a lot of posters on here don't think Chelseas title bid would be harmed by injuries to Matic & Fabregas as Ramirez & Mikel would just fill in as it's apparently all about the system!

I think they will, but primarily because of Schneiderlin missing. Wanyama hasn't been a regular for much of the season. Hopefully, it's just a short term thing and after this GW it's a fortnight before they play again in the league.

Matic is a beast. Everyoe still seems to be of the mindset that Chelsea are running away with the league. Theyre not out of sight yet. I do think they have enough in the locker though to beat most teams regardless of missing any player. Their squad is unbelievable.

I hate to agree with you but you are right. Centre midfield is the big hole in our squad. We are very reliant on Matic, Oscar and Fabregas being fit and they can't be expected to play 65 games in a season.

Of course we do have cover but not of the same quality and there is also the point that Matic-Fabregas as a pair are vulnerable positionally against the very best opposition, mainly because Fabregas doesn't do the defensive part of that role as well as he does everything else. We are short one top class CM/DM type.

In 80% of games it doesn't matter. But we are very unlikely to win the CL with the squad we currently have. Bayern and RM are better.

In the PL we are fortunate in that so few of our rivals know how to defend properly. It is that which gives us the edge.

I think these players have the highest points potential (within budget) for the second half of the season. Let me know what you would do differently.

    Forster
    Clyne - Terry - Baines
    Puncheon - Hazard - Sanchez - ADM
    Kane - Giroud - Aguero

    subs: Ward-Prowse - PVA - Cameron - 4m GK

    0.5 ITB

GK from the team with the best defensive record.
3 attacking defenders, plus 2 budget with great home fixtures for backup.
3 premium mids - ADM over SIlva in the short term due to fixtures.
Giroud over Costa based on team's style of play and the creativity of the midfield.

Puncheon in there as a strong option over the next 4 matches at 5.5m. Plenty of players around that price that will satisfy my need to take a punt here and there.

I would be a little concerned at double Sot defence due to Schneiderlin & Wanyama injuries - They sit in front of back 4 so I don't fancy many CS without them. Otherwise looks good, I think Puncheon could be about to hit a purple patch..

Hope so! I could swap Clyne for Filipe Luis in the short term and double up on the Chelsea defence, but then it is Citeh in a fortnight rolling up at Stamford bridge and Azpilicueta should be fit the week after. Tricky one.

What to do with this team? Would you WC?

    Panti - Foster
    Baines - Azpi - Zab - Taylor - Hutton
    Haz - Sanchez - Silva - Siggy - Boyd
    Austin - Rooney - Kane

I had that back 5 this week with Clichy instead of Zab and wild carded. But I also had Benteke and no cheap 5th mid.

I think you're fine if you swap out Azpi for Gardos, Clyne or Filipe Luis.

Anyone else thinking Lukaku for the next 2 weeks until Kun's fixtures improve? Played well in both FA cup legs. I'm on my WC so planning to keep cash aside for Kun.

So we all know the WC template... But what currently non template player do you think could explode and get a huge bandwagon?

I currently have Koscielny in my WC as after the city game I feel he could get a good run of clean sheets and bonus and keep up with some of the other popular defensive picks.

Here's a small help to increase your teamvalue when you're on a wildcard that I've been missing out on all these years and just thought about on the toilet a few minutes back.

Imagine you have a team and 5.5 left for a defender. Player A is the one you want and he's 5.5. He's due to rise once this week. Let's say on thursday.
Player B is also 5.5 and he jost scored a brace this week. His fixtures and stats aren't good though and you don't want to get him instead of player A at all but a lot of people do and so he's due to rise twice this week. let's say tuesday and friday.
Normally I would have had player B, hoping that he would rise his second time before Player A rises but after his first rise, I find out that player A will rise today (thursday). So I lose him, admitting defeat and get player A's rise just for safety reasons. If player B doesn't rise for a second time, I'd obviously lose value. But here comes the tricky part. I always thought that it wouldn't matter, if I got 2 rises by player B and then swap to player A who rose once in the mean time (having gotten 0.1 selling value by Player B and 5.6 in the bank, which I use to get Player A who's now on 5.6 as well due to his one rise). But the difference obviously is that if I sell player A in the second scenerio two weeks later, I'll still get 5.6 for him whereas in the first scenerio my (seemingly indifferent early switch to player A on thursday) will only give me his original 5.5 if I sell him, in case he didn't rise once more in the weeks after.
This might be logic to some already but it just opend my eyes. 🙂
Get your player when he's more expensive!

Yep but harder to determine rises this year and in Wildcard season it seems even more difficult to predict.

Yep much better to gain the 0.2 and cash the 0.1 sell value and then by your intended target for 0.1 more. Can backfire though if the 2nd rise does not happen as then you don't get the gain and your intended target is still 0.1 more expensive. This has happened to me a few times, probably more than it's worked out better

But then you lose the chance of making 0.1m if player A rises for a second time in the weeks following. Plus if he gets injured you'll have a 0.1m drop buffer before losing value.

Players are rarely going up 0.2m in a week in the new system so I think your (well explained) point is mute anyway, unfortunately 😉

      1. Dr. Agabuse
        • 13 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

Let's just say you're wildcarding last week and you didn't want to have Kane but Ings (Did Ings rise last week?). It's a safe scenerio as even if Ings rose on the second day, you should have kept Kane for his second rise the day after and then do the switch to the more expensive Ings the day after on wednesday. Sometimes it's safe, so it's just good to know, right?

    6. Dr. Agabuse
      • 13 Years

It obviously works the same with two players from absolutely different price ranges, so if we know a player will rise twice (and they still do if they get a brace, even in the new pricechangesystem) we can generally relax and won't fear that Player A rises beforehand (although we'd still prefer that he didn't).

Currently on WC and toying with a few different options.

Here is one that I am giving great consideration to. A double block Chelsea defence with Hazard, who is a week by week captain option. It is very unlikely that I would captain Fabregas, who I currently own but am considering off-loading for a double Chelsea defence. If we take the current season to date there is a mere 12/14 FPL points between Fabregas and Terry/Ivanovic.

If these points ratio were to replicate itself over the remainder of the season, I would have an extra £2.1m to spend on team building as I am definetly going with Terry.

Yep. I'm going for Ivan, Terry, Hazard in WC team. I think Chelsea defence will keep up consistency or improve but it's hard to see Fabregas keeping up rate of assists all season.
