Earlier this month, Watford kicked off their summer transfer activity with the ambitious signing of Werder Bremen centre-back Sebastian Prodl. Boasting experience in the Champions League and an international career that’s harvested nearly 50 caps, the 6ft 4in-tall Prodl should afford the Hornets a real physical presence at both ends of the pitch.

The Statistics

Between the ages of six and 15, Prodl learned his trade at the youth academies of SV Kirchberg and SV Feldbach. In 2002, he made the switch to his local Austrian Bundesliga outfit, Sturm Graz, though it was four years before the rangy centre-back earned his first start for the club.

Prodl made 43 appearances in all for Sturm Graz, notching four goals and one assist in the process. Having helped his side qualify for the UEFA Intertoto Cup in the 2007/08 campaign, Prodl’s stellar performances were acknowledged by Werder Bremen, resulting in a £2m switch to the German outfit.

The centre-half established himself as a permanent fixture under the stewardship of manager Thomas Schaaf, producing 149 appearances, ten goals and six assists throughout his seven-year stint with “The River Islandersâ€. His professional highlight occurred in the 2008/9 season, when Werder Bremen triumphed over Bayer Leverkusen in the German cup final, having lost out to Shakhtar Donetsk in the final of the UEFA Cup 10 days before.

In terms of international pedigree, Prodl captained his country during the 2007 U20 World Cup, having earned his senior debut a month before against Scotland. He has since turned out for Austria at the 2008 Euros and their qualifying campaign for the 2012 finals. In all, Prodl has accrued 49 caps for Das Team, netting four goals throughout that period.

The Prospects

Prodl’s height serves as both a hindrance and a strength. Akin to Arsenal’s 6ft 6in German centre-back Per Mertesacker – whom he played alongside during the World Cup winner’s five-year stint at Werder Bremen – Prodl is somewhat slow on the ground, yet compensates for that deficiency with excellent positioning and organisation.

Archie Rhind-Tutt – a Bundesliga expert for BT Sport’s European Football Show – stressed this point during an interview with the Watford Observer, insisting that his towering presence, experience, mental strength and well-rounded skill set should serve him well at Vicarage Road.

Now the sixth-tallest outfield player in England’s top tier, Prodl’s stature enabled him to win 66% of his headed duels in the Bundesliga last term. He also took advantage of his aerial prowess in the opponent’s penalty box, netting three times in 22 outings (19 starts) at an average of 581 minutes per goal – which would’ve ranked him second amongst defenders, behind Chris Smalling (495 minutes per goal), in the Premier League last season. His most recent strike arrived in a league tie against Schalke this February, when he entered the fray as a late substitute and headed home a last-gasp equaliser.

Although Werder Bremen ended the 2014/15 Bundesliga campaign with the joint-worst defensive record (65 goals conceded), it’s worth noting that they changed managers halfway through the season and made a strong recovery henceforth, leaping from the foot of the table during the winter break to finish in 10th place.

As for Prodl’s prospects within the Hornets set-up, it remains to be seen which of their current first-choice centre-backs (Craig Cathcart and Gabriele Angella) will drop out to accommodate the Austrian defender, with new boss Quique Sanchez Flores likely to deploy a four-man backline in the upcoming campaign.

In the likely event that Prodl nails down a starting berth, his attacking threat – coupled with Watford’s decent defensive record (they conceded the fifth-lowest number of goals in the Championship last season) – could make him an enticing budget defender. With three decent home clashes in the first five (WBA, SOU, SWA), the big Austrian may well find himself on our radars as a viable rotation option, should he come in at 4.5 or under in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game for the season ahead.

It might be a part of it, but even with that you'd expect better. Like the Bellerin goal for example, you can't blame a manager for such basic errors.

Thomas Müller is close to agreeing terms with Crystal Palace according to reputable sources here in Germany. "I want to be FF greatest ever points scorer, and the nuggets don't do one for the Bundesliga" he is reported as saying. "If my price comes in at more than 5.5 though, I have an option in my contract to return to Munich immediately", he added.

    Newcastle and Sunderland "Janus" Appraisal

This draft article is posted here for comments, especially from those that know the clubs well. All feedback will be taken into account in the final revision. And as usual, if you don't want to read a long post please skip over. 🙂

Last in this series of reviews we come to the Premier League's (PL) two North-Eastern clubs, Sunderland and Newcastle. Difficult to assess because they both have new managers, important to assess because they are one of the most selected home/away rotation pairs for experienced FPL managers in many seasons. So what effect will their new coaches have on them and what can be expected in the coming season?

Newcastle finished the season in 15th place on 39 points, with 40 goals scored and a huge 63 conceded - only QPR let in more PL goals in 2014/15. The second half of the season (after the departure of Alan Pardew) was truly dismal with 26 points coming in the 18 games before Pardew left and only 13 points in the 20 games after John Carver took over. The defense was poor all season, goals conceded averaging 1.61 goals per game under Pardew and 1.89 per game under Carver. However under Carver the goals dried up as well, culminating in a run where 5 were scored in 10 games (9 defeats) during March and April.

So what effect will the appointment of Steve McClaren have? He is a coach with a chequered club history - relatively successful spells with Middlesbrough and FC Twente, less successful at Wolfsburg, FC Twente (2nd time) and Derby. Generally quite good on the offensive side of the game, defensive solidity has not historically been McClaren's strongest point. Over the last 2 seasons his Derby team scored 85 and 84 goals in the Championship - good totals for promotion contenders. But they conceded 56 and 52 goals, behind most of their promotion rivals. Couple that tendency with the traditional preference among Newcastle fans for a team that plays open, attacking football and the likely outcome would seem likely to be a team that will improve offensively more than it does defensively.

With Dick Advocaat ("Big Dick" as the Sunderland faithful have affectionately named him) we are dealing with a more known quantity as he took charge of Sunderland for the last 9 games of the 2014/15 season. 3 wins and 3 draws in his first 8 games (scoring 7 and conceding 7, with 4 clean sheets) was a big improvement on their form for the season as a whole, especially defensively, and was enough to see the Black Cats to 16th place on 38 points. But they remained a team that was short of goals - only Burnley managed less goals over the season than Sunderland's total of 31.

Advocaat is a very experienced coach with a reputation for favouring team ethic and defensive solidity. So the reported agreement he has with the Sunderland owner Ellis Short that 4-5 quality additions can be made to the squad suggests that there may be good Fantasy Football options at the Stadium of Light next season, especially amongst the defenders, once the shape of the new squad becomes clearer.

    THE DEFENCE

As noted above, it would take a big leap of faith to expect Newcastle to quickly become a much better defensive unit under McClaren, although early links with players like Joel Matip of Schalke and Aymen Abdennour of Monaco (both centre backs) suggest that defensive improvement is a priority in his mind. It may, however, be wisest to look for now at Newcastle defenders who don't need to rely solely on clean sheets for fantasy points.

Goalkeeper (GK) Tim Krul mustered 17 save points on his way to 99 FPL points from 30 games played (Newcastle failed to get a single clean sheet without him in the team) and having amassed less points than he did in 2013/14 it seems unlikely that he'll be priced above last season's 4.5m. A GK rotation with Sunderland's Costel Pantilimon could therefore be a realistic option, although Pantilimon (Sunderland's top FPL scorer with 123 points) will probably see a price rise to 5.0m at least and 9.5m (could be 10.0m) may be higher than ideal for a GK pair.

Apart from Krul, the stand out Newcastle defender is likely to be Daryl Janmaat, who mustered a goal and 8 assists during the season on his way to becoming their highest scoring player in FPL with 118 points. One who may benefit from McClaren's probable attacking approach, the downside with Janmaat is a likely price increase to 5.5m (FPL). That would likely put him in direct competition with players like Joleon Lescott of WBA and Ashley Williams of Swansea, teams that are defensively more reliable.

The upside of Newcastle's weak 2014/15 defensive performance may well be kind price tags for other defenders like Coloccini and Dummett, however, and there could therefore be bargains to be had if Newcastle's defensive performance improves.

For Sunderland there should be plenty of worthwhile defensive options apart from GK Pantilimon. Club captain John O'Shea is a steady if unspectacular fantasy football performer, though a possible price tag of 5.0m after his 107 FPL points last season may put some managers off. The value picks are likely to be the fullbacks, Billy Jones and Patrick van Aanholt. Neither would appear likely to be priced above 4.5m, at which level especially van Aanholt (5 assists in 25 starts) would be attractive to many.

The Sunderland-Newcastle defender rotation pairing may look risky given Newcastle's defensive frailties but it is worth noting that Stoke also pair well with Sunderland (home/away rotation in 28 of 38 games). Stoke may well also have feasible 4.5m defenders (see my previous article) so this may be one solution that fantasy managers will look at.

    THE MIDFIELD

Among the Newcastle midfielders the highest FPL points scorers in 2014/15 were Jack Colback, Remy Cabella and Moussa Sissoko. Amongst these, Cabella was the leader on all the creative statistics (key passes, chances created) apart from assists and he was also the leader on all the shooting statistics (inside box, overall shots) apart from goals. Increasingly a prolific goalscorer from midfield during his time at Montpellier in Ligue 1, it may be that French International Cabella was somewhat unlucky not to achieve more goals and assists last season and he's one that could well benefit from McClaren's influence on Newcastle's playing style. Unlikely to be priced above 6.0m or 6.5m, he could be a very live "4th midfielder" option if nailing a spot in McClaren's starting XI.

Moussa Sissoko continues to be a player whose actual FPL returns seem to undershoot his promise but Jack Colback had a very good first season for the Toon, racking up 114 FPL points from centre midfield. Unlikely to be priced above 5.5m (maybe 5.0m) he could be a worthwhile budget option though his tendency to accrue yellow cards (12 last season) remains a concern. In addition we should also consider Siem De Jong, a high scoring attacking midfielder in his time with Ajax whose first season with Newcastle was totally disrupted by 2 long-term injuries. McClaren will know all about De Jong from his time managing Twente and it's quite possible that the Dutch International could prove to be the best of the bunch given an injury-free run.

For Sunderland, Sebastian Larsson and Jordi Gomez were the reliable midfield starters under Advocaat. Larsson had very decent creative stats (similar to Cabella) and is also an excellent free kick taker. Unfortunately his price tag seems unlikely to fall below last season's 5.5m, at which level he's not the greatest value on past performance. Gomez may get a price drop to 5.0m but doesn't seem great value even at that level, although as Sunderland's penalty taker he is always capable of a goal. However a feasible wildcard option could be Jack Rodwell - highly rated in his Everton days and one who may have the talent to make a much bigger impact if featuring in Advocaat's plans for next season.

    STRIKERS

A difficult area for both teams and in which both would apparently like to add to their squads, although effective strikers (like Charlie Austin who has been linked with Newcastle) are generally sought after by a number of clubs. As it stands neither North East team has convincing striker options from a fantasy football point of view.

For Newcastle, Papiss Cisse scores lots of goals when he plays. But that's the problem. In all but one of the last 4 seasons he has played less than 1400 minutes, that's around 15 full games at most. He may score readily when he plays but he seldom seems to stay injury free for long enough to rely on. Emmanuel Riviere was disappointing with 1 goal in more than 1200 minutes of play in his first Newcastle season and did not pull up any trees before that in France either (40 goals in 161 league appearances). Ayoze Perez had a promising first season but 7 goals from 36 appearances (even if quite a few were as a substitute) is nothing to write home about. For attacking players the Newcastle midfielders look better options right now.

Sunderland do have a proven PL striker in Jermain Defoe but his 4 goals in 17 starts was really disappointing. Neither Connor Wickham nor Steven Fletcher have convincing goalscoring histories either. With only 31 goals scored in total in the 2014/15 PL, Sunderland appear to really need a new striker, either that or a way to get more from Jermain Defoe. Most fantasy managers will be taking a wait and see approach until then.

I don't know, Doos. He may have potential but he just doesn't score many goals - 15 in 86 games for Sunderland and 39 in 179 games over his senior career. Unless he's priced very low I just can't see it myself.

Good article! Great to see it all laid out and presented well. Hate to see you have to be justifying your work in opening paragraph. They've all been excellent reads.

Both clubs urgently need minimum one striker, if not two. Demba ba or austin would be excellent additions for newcastle, if the rumours are to be believed. Think the value will be in newcastles striker signings or the sunderland defence. They looked very well organised towards the end of year and cattermole gives them lots of protection too.

Possibly Aarons could be a useful 4.5 midfielder if hes fit and gets a good run. looks a talent!

Pretty accurate with the Newcastle bit and as you say we have to wait. With regards to the defence McBrolly is actively seeking coaches so that could be something to look out for. De Jong and Cabella could be revelations and both should cost no more than 6.5m. The new striker will also be one to keep an eye on. Not looking too good as Austin and Bas Dost have interest from more appealing suitors

Thanks. The coaches thing is interesting, I'm never sure how useful a defensive coach is unless they are very much in sympathy with the manager's playing ethos. For instance, Wenger's playing style made the job of defensive coach difficult at Arsenal for many years - what can you do if Wenger then picks a team with no DM in it? (I'm thinking of the 1-6 at Chelsea a little while back).

On the other hand, Steve Clarke was defensive coach under Mourinho during Jose's first spell and the defence was rock solid, even more than it is now. Their approaches dovetailed perfectly.

It all comes down to McClaren and how he will approach things for me.

Great article - as usual. I can see Newcastle going down unless Mclaren gives them the huge kick up the backside that they all (with the honorable exception of Colback) deserve - they were a disgrace to the game last time out. Sunderland were awful as well but at least they're now solid defensively. Give me Norwich or Bournemouth any day!

I reckon Newcastle will score a few more goals, be a bit better organised and finish around 14th. Don't expect any dramatic improvement.

Bavarian Shweinsteiger seems a bit of a glamour buy for UTD. Is he what they need? He'll be 31 if he plays for them and therefore a bit shortsighted.

I suppose. It would have been nice a few years ago but it feels like an American type signing

He's 31, not 35/6. No reason why he can't be close to his best.

This. And he hasn't been very impressive in recent years. YOu hit the nail on the head bellow with the word "romantic". Not what a club like Man United should be looking at.

I think they certainly need an improvement on Fellaini as one of the midfield 3, and he is also a potential replacement for Carrick if he gets injured.

For £7.5 (touted price) I think it would be a good purchase, considering his quality and the prices being paid nowadays. Man U payed £5m for Falcao on loan didn't they? Rumours of Sunderland paying £2m for Jenkinson on loan.. etc.

But it feels like they are just putting out fires with that move. A club the size of Man UTD shouldn't be going down that road bit verges on romantic.

Well it wouldn't be hampering any younger players development (they have none in that position), and it's difficult to find quality in that area in younger players, so I don't see the harm.

It would certainly be ideal to find a longer term solution if possible. I can only think of Gundogan as possibly fulfilling that though.

So stupid betting that much money let alone on an event that has 156 entrants.

    1. Jay_

I put 80 on Johnson @11/4 earlier and 20 on Day @4/1, if Day wins I'm still down 100 if Johnson wins I'm up 100, if Spieth wins I'm up 200, Johnson is odds on now so looking good, and I did bets in play when there was realistically only 20 potential winners

              Just put 50 on Grace @ 4/1so now 250 lay out :

              Spieth win = 400 (up 150)
              Johnson win = 300 (up 50)
Grace win = 250 (break even)

Staked 100 in total on the golf the other day on 5 players, 3 are out of contention, the 2 remaining are :
                      Spieth £50 @ 7/1 and Stenson £25 @6/1
Spieth is currently in a 3 way tie with Johnson(11/4 and Day(4/1)
                      Should I
A: Put 50 each on Day and Johnson to cover myself
B: Put 80 on Johnson and 20 on Day (gut saying Johnson wins)
C: Stick as I am and ride it out

Spieth is in a 4-way tie, you missed Grace (who I backed for a tenner e/w at 125/1).

Really the answer depends on how much you can afford to lose, so how much you might want to minimise your risk. I'd stick where I was in your position. Spieth is a justified favourite, but DJ looks pretty dangerous. I certainly wouldn't want to go taking 4/1 about Day given all the health issues.

                          First choice.

He is still their best centre back, imo. He is the same Kompany, plus a few too many mistakes. He can cut out the mistakes and carry that team. He is also an immense leader.

I still like him. Somebody chatting further up about Mascherano's influence on the Barca defence is a reminder that actually the City CDM's and full backs were far too cavalier last season at times. They hardly provided any cover at all at times.

Playing that way is absolutely fine, but you have to have a pressing game to play that way.

Between 2 strikers, Aguero, Yaya and Silva, the pressing is non-existent.

It's quite interesting watching how Arsenal's pressing game has developed. We send them wide, close the space and force long balls. Very impressive, with Giroud and Ozil all playing their part.

Yeah they do..you have a good team for next season. Top maybe.

We dwell too much on City's defensive frailties as we always look for CS's...but they ended up about the fourth tightest in the league for goals conceded last time, not too bad when you are looking to notch three or four every game at the other end...

Played 6 games for them apparently, with a relatively poor average whoscored rating (6.63) compared to 7.19 this season in the PL.

He still has a long way to go, but it is amazing considering how out of his depth he was on his debut against BvB. As it stands, I'm still not sure whether he or Debuchy will be the starting RB next season.

I'd be surprised if Wenger doesn't keep faith with Bellerin, at least until he shows signs of struggling.

Was an absolute sensation last season! Guess pre-season will tell us a lot as always

Yeh, although positionally he has a lot to learn, when to venture forward, and he is very poor at reading balls in the air, which makes balls to the back-post very dangerous.

I'd probably be playing Debuchy against better teams, and Bellerin against weaker teams, as it stands.

Makes sense in theory although chopping and changing a back four like that is suicide IMO.

Plus do you really have to do THAT well to end up as a defender at Barca?

I would have thought that was the one place you don't really have to be absolute world class

Perhaps more so, their defenders get exposed more so than most other teams. Messi wont be doubling up on attackers any time soon. 😉

looool turn it in. They have 80% possession most games, how on earth are do 'their defenders get exposed more so than most other teams'??

Plus they can usually afford to conceded every game and still win at a canter.

No idea what that last sentence means....

Because when the other team do get the ball, Barca defenders are often 1v1 with attackers.

Terry for example wouldn't be able to play for Barca.

By exposed more, I mean when they're defending, they have less protection from other players, btw.

I reckon after the 3rd match when you can see the qualifying teams ,the yellow cards and who plays first/second
I know you have lots of swaps but not enough to do the WC surgery
You will know then who will be joining ger and por and others will have spent their wildcard
If you get lucky with your current squad leave it even later?

I'd maybe pay 6.5 for a Chelsea defender, but no more in the beginning of the season.

But it will make him more certain to play every week (if a replacement doesn't arrive), so he'll be more value for that price.

I think it's a coincidence. I don't think it being early in the season makes any difference to a defenders attacking returns.

He had an advanced position in one game, but that was just because they were playing Everton, he he sticks him high to counter Baines.

Intelligent to ignore Ivan. Hope he comes in at 8m to make the choice easier. I'm spineless, so hope I can find the courage to ignore the man. I think Cresswell will be much better value as we try to squeeze in a decent attack.

Coquelan is not a good midfielder and only serves to highlight how badly Arsenal have lacked a defensive midfielder, like Flamini did before him, in my opinion. The guy enjoyed pretty unsuccessful loan spells at Freiburg and Charlton in the Championship and has been at Arsenal for ages. If he really was this great DM then why is it only now he's broken into the team? Come on like. It's just Wenger being cheap and not spending money where it's glaringly needed. Schneiderlin (& Higuaín) and Arsenal win the league. Coquelan deserves some bit of credit, but he certainly is not a revelation or going to help Arsenal win the league or challenge in the CL.

Don't think many will disagree that Arsenal could do with signing Schneiderlin but that shouldn't detract from Coquelin's brilliant performances since returning to Arsenal. Just because he's had previously average spells at lower clubs doesn't mean that he's not been excellent in 2015.

But if he's so good why has it taken Wenger 8 years to realise it?

Agree he may have improved a bit, but he can't be a starter if they have serious ambitions.

Average on the ball, but has been immense defensively. Dont know why he's had a relatively poor career thus far from what I've seen.

Schneiderlin is a great player but I think some are expecting too much of him. There's no doubt he will improve Arsenal but I don't believe he alone is enough to radically change their fortunes. A new CB is required to finish that defensive project, IMO.

I disagree. They have Gabriel (I honestly don't know if he's good or not, never seen him play) to put pressure on Mertesacker and Koscielny is a good CB.

Schneiderlin is a good footballing DM. It doesn't have to be him particularly, I'm just arguing the Arsenal need a proper good DM.

And a good goalscoring striker (I'm a big fan of Higuaín).

If Kos gets injured though for any length of time, we simply have no chance of winning the league.

Gabriel still doesn't speak English, and I don't think he's an elite defender at all. I'd love to see a good defender come in who is good on the ball.

No, I don't think he is. For me it's a must. With Cech in goal that would be a top addition, although the Ospina thing is weird as he did well. A CF wouldn't go amiss.

Mertesacker is too slow. He gets exposed far too easily by fast strikers who play on the shoulder. Don't get me wrong, he's fine for the majority of games and he's a great organiser. I just don't think he's a title winning CB.

Slow isn't always an issue but your positional play has to be goo, and his is just average. He also has a penchant for falling over when the ball is lobbed over his head.

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech appears to be on the verge of signing for Arsenal, according to Sky sources.

The 33-year-old has reportedly agreed personal terms on a switch to the Emirates Stadium and we understand all that is left to agree is a fee between the two clubs.

Unfortunate for Ospina, he hadn't done much wrong. He had to wait ages for Szczesny to make a mistake (which was inevitably going to come because he's just not a good 'keeper), which must have been frustrating enough. I can only remember Ospina making the one mistake when he became the no.1 'keeper, and it was blown up way too much by pundits saying "Arsenal need a world class 'keeper". I think reputation goes a long way for a 'keeper. I can remember De Gea and Courtois making mistake with little criticism. They all make mistakes at some stage. If people knew Ospina before he came to England as a good 'keeper I think he would have been forgiven for making ONE mistake. Szcsesny got away with clangers for years because he was "still young" and "improving"!

But when a player like Cech becomes available, you have to go for it.

Good business for Arsenal though. Ospina was free last summer and now reputedly being sold for £4m. That's Cech's signing bonus paid 😆

Liverpool are ready to turn their attention away from Benteke who Villa value around 12 mil more than Liverpool. Liverpool are scouting Rondon and Bacca.

I think they'll price him higher with the possibility of Begovic leaving. They usually do, unfortunately.

                            exactly my point

People are complaining that we're not signing anyone as we're basically linked with just about everyone, so people expect movement.

I've lost count of the number of the players we've been 'close' to signing 2 days before they signed an improved contract

Stuff is happening, United fans (myself included) just need to be patient, it will happen. We have no clue what's happening behind the scenes

and realistically only 5 could be signed - Otamendi, Clyne, Schneirderlin, Gundogan and Firmino

This wasn't meant to be a United dream team or anything like that, merely an indication of how crazy paper talk has become. Transfer window hasn't even opened yet and we've been linked 'strongly' with probably over 30 players
