Following a successful first season at the Britannia for Mark Hughes, in which he guided Stoke to a ninth-place finish, expectations were high as the Potters headed into the 2014/15 campaign. The former Blackburn boss continued his side’s evolution, bringing in the likes of Bojan Krkic from Barcelona and Victor Moses on a season-long loan from Chelsea, while Phil Bardsley and Mame Biram Diouf added physicality at both ends of the pitch. That balance of style and substance ultimately proved successful, with Stoke finishing in ninth place once again.

In this members article, we will take an in-depth look at Hughes’ second season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators and comparing the numbers from the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns under the Welshman.

Pick two if you would be so kind:

    A. Clyne
    B. Cresswell
    C. Mert
    D. Kolarov
    E. Darmian

Clyne will probably pick up someassists and Arsenal will be better at the back with Cech between the bars.

With Benteke's confirmation, is it worth downgrading one of Rooney/Costa for him?

I'm not convinced that there really is any pattern.

Chelsea and Arsenal in particular have settled back lines...

Do you need them though? No. Just find the balance in the squad you like, whether or not that includes premium defenders.

Do we have any Toon fans about or anyone with knowledge of their squad? What I want to know is... Will Aarons be a starter?

If so I think he'll be a great budget option for FPL

    1. Wilshere Knowledge
      • 12 Years

He could be a starter, but at the very least he'll be near the first team.

They have De Jong, Wijnaldum, Colback, Sissoko, Cabella, (even Tiote perhaps) looking for 5 spots, so it will be tough for him to break into the side.

However, Cabella is currently injured, De Jong has been crocked for the entirety of last year, so he could very well see plenty of game time.

Not worth the risk, imo, but he has been great in pre-season thus-far, so...

He had 1500 minutes the year before and only managed 1 goal, so I, and others, think it may have been something of a one-off season for what is an average player.

He is defo not "nailed". First choice, probably yes.
His overall play is poor though and if he doesn't score, expect a 60 min sub.

Some of his minutes were limited due to his father passing last season, but I'm not convinced all of them were.

If I'm proven wrong, he's straight in my team. Really like him as an FPL prospect.

So I've decided which teams I want in my defence: Chelsea, Swansea, Sunderland, Southampton and maybe Leicester (depending on Ranieri's approach).

Question is, after Ivanovic, which are the best combinations for my goalkeepers and defenders?

    Fabianski (5.0) or Williams/Naughton (5.0)?
    Skeltenburg (5.0) or Cedric (5.0)?
    Pantillimon (5.0) or PvA (5.0)?
    Schmeichel (4.5) or Morgan (4.5)?

    I'm going with a non-playing 4.0 keeper and 2 x 4.0 defenders.

I mentioned Stek and HEnnessey GK combo and got semi-slated. I wasn't sure if the author knew they would soon be first choice, if only temporary for the latter. Steak at 5 for Soton and a 4 non playing seemed okay to me, but I reconsidered, maybe I now reconsider again.

With the latest Benteke move I had settled on a Hendo/Kane tandem but now may be moved towards Chadli/Benteke and be able to save 1m in the process. Thoughts?

    So to summarise:

    Kane/Henderson

They always manage good numbers, despite often looking shaky.

Kompany is nailed on at 6m of course, the full backs will rotate on both sides, so if you want to go that route then you could try Mangala. 5.5m and currently first choice, but there is the risk of Demicheles if Mangala doesn't perform.

7 only because of a virtually assured 2 point 4th mid. Quite strong overall

    RMT lads:

    Schmeichel/Schwarzer
    Azpi/ Merte/ Huth/ Bassong/ Kaboul
    Wally/ Haz/ Yaya/ Young/ Anya
    Rooney/ Benteke/ Pelle

Haven't seen much love for Young but he's sure to start no??

Not a massive fan of Pelle but they've great fixtures.

    Thoughts??

Okay, did some more Tinkering, some opinions would be terrific.

    Schmeichel
    Mertesacker Azpi Cedric
    Hendo Fab Chadli Payet Silva
    Rooney Costa

    Hennessey Ighalo Smith Baker.

Hennessey probably won't play but I'm happy with Schmeichel for the first few weeks at least, plus it freed up a bit of cash.
I think I like the idea of Hendo + Chadli and Rooney + Costa.
    Any thoughts?

With Ings, Origi and possibly Balo lurking, dont you think it's possible Benteke is eased in the first few GW's? New team, needing time to settle and all that..

Straight in my team if he does. On pens u think?

Crossing thing is a myth too.

"The Belgian striker has been assisted for twenty-eight league goals in his time with the Villans, and of those eight have been from crosses (though not including corners; we’ll cover those in a later section). This means that 29% of his strikes have required a ball in from wide areas.

In the Premier League over the same period, there have been 627 goals created via crosses, from a total of 2,042 net-bulgers that have been assisted; 31% in percentage terms, so a slightly higher proportion than Benteke."

Google: "The truth about Christian Benteke" for the full article. Great read.

I agree, but that was not the point. My concern is for GW 1 (and maybe 2), and Ings/Origi may be handed a start.

I think the midfield looks a bit light-weight to be honest although all three of the cheaper picks could come off big time I'd prefer only two positions like that to manage. I think you could cut a bit from defence and maybe drop a 0.5 on Fabs to get two 8.5 mids in alongside Silva?

Feel like Oscar is being overlooked on here. He's finally had a summer off and their isn't much competition for his place in the squad. 8.5 is a great price.

I have always liked Oscar so bit biased, but I agree he could offer value way to Chelsea attack, and usually doesn't fall too far off others pace. Having him atm as my cover for team:
        De gea krul
Azpi Cedric bacuna ( distin morgan)
        Sterling oscar Walcott Milner (young)
Rooney benteke adebayor (assuming villa move)

Why am I struggling to find a position I want a City player in. Besides Agureo, I'm not badly keen on Yaya or Sterling. No need to mention the city defenders.

        Cech

        Ivanovic -- Koscielny -- Clyne

        Hazard -- Henderson -- Cazorla -- Depay -- Wanyama

        Costa -- Benteke

Silva could be a solid option. He'll either be out wide in a three man attack with Sterling and Aguero or through the centre imo.
