With the new season now less than two weeks away, our community Hot Topics were full of the latest pre-season information on likely starting XIs and formations. The community discussions also took in the evolution of the Fantasy Premier League game over the years, while our community writers focused on getting the most from our backlines. We look back on the week’s activity, whilst also assessing some of the latest Members area tables and showcasing the array of community competitions being set up ahead of the campaign kick-off.

The Community Articles

Defence was a key issues tackled by our community writers, with Patch making the case for investing more heavily in Fantasy backlines, while Mouldmaster looked at the prospects of a 13.5m three way defensive rotation.

Elsewhere, Saniul offered his view on Brendan Rodgers’ likely set-up as the Liverpool revolution continued apace with the signing of Christian Benteke.

This week saw us bring you a brand new game to the pages of Fantasy Football Scout, as the draft-based Dugout FC earned a shout-out. As it happened, earlier in the week The Cisco Kid underlined the appeal of draft games and leagues.

Finally, our resident team sheet expert Demi delivered this article on the best team forums and Twitter sources for getting the inside track on starting team news straight from the fans and journos.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The pre-season itinerary of many Premier League sides picked up this week, helping to shed some more light on probable starters and formations.

Luckily, many of our resident community team experts were on hand to keep tabs on these matches. Amongst our busy scouts was Do The Van Gaal-Lem Shake, who dropped by to deliver this report on yesterday’s friendly clash between Manchester United and Barcelona. He paid close attention to the evolving partnership between Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, which was something Mark was keen to get the community’s views on earlier in the week.

Aquafresca has also been keeping up to date on United’s pre-season fixtures and drafted this report on the Red Devils’ victory over Club America earlier in the week.

Berbinho’s Forehead’s report on Liverpool’s preparations in Australia is essential reading for those considering drafting in James Milner, while Dusan Citizen has also travelled down under to reveal that Samir Nasri is unlikely to disappear quietly in the face of rotation.

A little closer to home, Bowstring the Carp took an in-depth look at Watford’s away victory over German side Paderborn last weekend.

Pre-season friendly line-ups have also been under the watchful gaze of Couti and the Below5th as he revealed his latest update to his excellent probable starters research.

Another top researcher in the week gone by was Magic Hamster, who has been looking to see how the Rate My Team requests submitted by the community have changed as pre-season fixtures shed more light on favoured players.

Meanwhile, Lucy has used her local knowledge of Southampton to assess the south coast side’s likely starters for the forthcoming season – the essential go-to thread for those considering Ronald Koeman’s charges.

The extent to which pre-season friendlies effect our Fantasy squad selections was discussed by Andy85wsm, who was amongst our moderator and contributor team to help with the daily discussions while I was sunning myself on the Cornish coast this week.

Andy85wsm’s other daily Hot Topics this week included this discussion on how to deal with Sergio Aguero’s likely absence from Gameweek 1’s team sheet, the prospects of success for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, the importance of team balance, which of Arsenal’s many excellent midfield players to choose and the latest players to join the FPL player list this week.

Another FFScout moderator to chip in with our daily hot topic discussions was Ryan, who was interested in the effect of ownership on our squad decisions and whether the price baseline for cheap defenders has been subject to inflation this year.

Elsewhere, Epic Fail sparked this debate on the often used tag of ‘essential’ for players and Wolverine took a look at top tips for gaining a good start.

Understanding the latest rule changes in FPL, namely the introduction of new ‘chips’ to boost captaincy, bench and attacking player points, is going to be key to success this season. Knowing when potential double Gameweeks could fall will be crucial to using these chips well, according to Jairzinho. We also asked what your dream chip would be to help gain an advantage in future seasons.

The introduction of chips is just the latest innovation for FPL over its many years, as we discovered during Skool Daze’s FPL veteran quiz. This brought back happy memories of the days when Everton’s Steve Watson was near essential, while Innsie’s discussion on weird captaincy choices also took at look at Fantasy football’s oddball heroes and villains from the game’s past.

There have been a myriad of strange captaincy choices made by our Scoutcast hosts Mark and Granville over the years. Pukka popped by to see if the community would be able to help in their decision making, particularly with their annual Scoutcast team’s prospects.

The Members Tables

For those looking to assess Arsenal’s attacking options in more detail, Head2headwin has compiled this table of their performance during the final six weeks of last season. Meanwhile, Vougiedipond has created this Missed Opportunities table looking at Premier League stars’ most embarrassing statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There were a raft of tournament organisers on hand to tell us about their leagues and head to head competitions for the community to take part in. Here is a full list of those taking place, which includes Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (FPL code 13343-18364), Hulky Punter’s Bloodbath League (FPL code 168077-145950) and The Sarjeant’s Lads on Toure league (FPL code 1866-7724).

Torres Magic has also published this community article, as a guide to his particular tournament.

Benteke or lukaku until aguero is back?

Thinking lukaku, on pens, starts at home to Watford. Already settled at Everton and scored hat trick today.

If you go without Hazard but with Costa , do yuo think it'd essential to have Fabregas?

What is better in that case - Fab or Sterling ?

      Nice one.

Targett is short term. 2 weeks max. Williams have only 2 or 3 good weeks in firt 9 GW.
      I would get 2x4,5 defenders

Anytime I put someone like Fabregas in my team instead of hazard I just feel like my team has lost one more captain option and with no Aguero I don't like that. Not sure I trust Rooney that much.

But that £2.5m! I'm starting to think that Hazard might have to wait until my first wildcard when Ive got a bit more SV to spread the love

2.5m is a lot but I think it would be used for my defence which is okay enough for a 4-3-3

Not sure about long term but I do like it as an option. Also liking 3-5-2.

Midfield of Depay, Ramsey, Fabregas, Sigurdason, Chadli - oof!

352 I can work with but you'll never set the world on fire with a 433. Are you going for 3 nailed + 2 rotation or 2 nailed with a 2 from 3 rotation?

              I don't think you can compare 4-3-3 with 3-5-2.
3-5-2 & 3-4-3 have clearly been the best working formations over the years and there is no obvious justifaction for 4-3-3 being a workable formation other than in emergencys.

      Totally agree,
Had fabregas until a couple of days ago, just can't go without Hazard as long as I don't have Aguero.

Fabregas is way cheaper but I think my team is quite balanced now so no real need for the extra cash. Would recommend you to build your team with Hazard until it's quite balanced and you have some option to get Aguero in without a wildcard.

I'm not sure really , just looks like a team that has £5m in the bank . To be honest I was pretty negative upon the reading the 2 4.5 mids sentence !

oops, accidentally posted this as a reply. let's try again!

okay folks, i've touched on this a couple times in the past few weeks, but now i'm a member i can offer up some proper research.

there's been a lot of talk in the past few weeks about how it could be a legitimate alternative strategy to prioritise expensive defenders over expensive attackers. i wanted to look at some info which hopefully sheds some more light on this idea, starting with...

    TOP 5 GOALSCORING TEAMS - Gameweeks 1-6
    2011/2012: man utd 22, man city 19, chelsea 12, arsenal 9, spurs 9,
    2012/2013: man utd 14, fulham 13, everton 12, man city 12, chelsea & spurs 11
2013/2014: man city 14, arsenal 13, villa 9, everton 9, liverpool, man utd and swansea 8
    2014/2015: chelsea 19, everton 12, man city 12, arsenal 11, man utd 11

    TOP 5 CLEAN SHEETS - Gameweeks 1-6
2011/2012: man city, arsenal, newcastle, QPR, stoke, swansea 3
2012/2013: chelsea 4, arsenal, west brom and west ham 3, fulham, everton, swansea, stoke, sunderland 2
2013/2014: spurs and southampton 4, man city, everton, liverpool, chelsea and west ham 3
2014/2015: southampton, swansea, west brom, villa and burnley 3

assuming utd, city, chelsea, arsenal, liverpool, spurs and everton as the 'big 7' in terms of pricing in recent years, the goalscoring lists contain those teams 20 times and often WAY ahead of the rest, whereas the clean sheets list contains those teams 10 times, and rarely very far ahead.

point being, the so-called 'premium' sides tend to be a lot more reliably superior in attack than they are in defense during the first 6 gameweeks. to me this suggests that while folks may be right about defense providing more value in theory, the reality is that the right defenders are much, much harder to choose than the right attackers, early on at least. the predictability of the premium strikers/mids even at an early stage is what necessitates their being prioritised.

however, this doesn't account for a defender's attacking points, and it's fair to assume that defenders will score more attacking points in teams that score more goals. to make sure, let's look at that in more detail:

TOP SCORING DEFENDERS (GOALS) - Gameweeks 1-6
2011/2012: 15 defenders scored 1 goal, 9 of them from the 'big 7'
2012/2013: rafael and ivanovic (2), 16 with 1 goal inc. 9 from the 'big 7'
2013/2014: baines, davies (swa) 2, 16 with 1 goal inc. 5 from the 'big 7'
    2014/2015: dier, ivanovic 2, 16 with 1 goal inc. 6 from the 'big 7'

TOP SCORING DEFENDERS (ASSISTS) - Gameweeks 1-6
2011/2012: bosingwa (che) and richards (mci) 2, 12 assisted 1 inc. 7 from the 'big 7'
    2012/2013: baines 2, 11 assisted 1 inc. 5 from the 'big 7'
    2013/2014: zabaleta 2, 12 with 1 assist inc. 6 from the 'big 7'
2014/2015: baines, zabaleta and dann 2, 15 with 1 assist inc. 6 from the 'big '7

in the first 6 gameweeks a defender has had a goals+assists tally of more than 3 never (in the past 4 seasons), and more than 2 on only 3 occasions: bosingwa in 2011/2012, baines in 2012/2013 and 2014/2015. baines of course had/has an unusual monopoly on set pieces. i could go into more detail with this but it basically shows that you can probably rely on your defenders from premium teams to get something in the region of 3-9 attacking points in the first 3 GWKs, maybe a little more in exceptional circumstances. in other words, the equivalent of an extra clean sheet.

let's see what the clean sheets list looks like if the 'premium 7' are all given an extra clean sheet:

TOP 5 CLEAN SHEETS (adjusted) - Gameweeks 1-6
2011/2012: man city, arsenal 4, utd, spurs, newcastle, QPR, stoke, swansea 3
2012/2013: chelsea 5, arsenal 4 everton, west brom and west ham 3
2013/2014: spurs 5, southampton, man city, everton, liverpool, chelsea, west ham 4
2014/2015: chelsea, man utd, spurs, southampton, swansea, west brom, villa and burnley 3

premium teams now appear 15 times in the list. this is still 5 less than those who appeared in the goalscoring list, and by much less of a margin in most cases. AND we haven't even factored in the attacking points for defenders on cheaper teams (of which there were still quite a few as demonstrated above), OR the clean sheet points gained by midfielders, OR bonus, which may benefit defenders more this year but is still skewed in favour of attacking players. it still seems that placing the bulk of our budget in the front 8 is the way to go for our early teams at least (i'm yet to analyse other stages of the season but i may do a follow up post on the subject) because there's statistically more of a gulf between the output of premium and budget strikers/mids than there is for defenders.

sorry for this absurdly long and rambly post, hopefully it's useful even if you feel my conclusion is wrong (by all means argue the case, i may be being dumb!). i was considering showing the percentage of attacking points for each premium team's defenders relative to their overall total but i don't want this to go on foreverrrrr. still, if anyone has any requests for some follow up analysis let me know!

Shouldn't you be comparing premium defenders with their similarly priced attacking counterparts for this?

Premium attackers do better than premium defenders hence the price 🙂

      1. aflickering
        • 13 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

i'm not actually comparing attackers with defenders at all, i'm just showing that premium attackers are more reliably superior to less expensive attackers, whereas defense is more of a lottery (early on). so investing big in defense at the start is a waste of money unless you get lucky or have the exceptionally attacking defenders like baines.

    Which defence would be best?

    A) Azpi, Kosc, Cedric, 4.0, 4.0

    B) Azpi, Williams, Huth, Francis, Prodl

When I look at A) on paper, I wouldn't mind starting those 3 every week, however I am very wary of the fact I would have two 4.0s.

Ideally want to keep Kosc, but he'll be a makeweight if I decide to go with B), so basically the question is Kosc + 4.0s or 2 rotation pairs..?

Here it goes... something different for me.

    Speroni // Butland (Rotation)
    IVANOVIC // KOSCIELNY // Francis // Huth // Mathews (BOU/LEI/SUN rotation)
    HAZARD // CAZORLA // WALCOTT // CHADLI // Ritchie
    ROONEY // DEENEY // Sakho

Players in caps to play every game.

My formation will switch between 343 and 352, rotating Ritchie and Sakho. (I have read a lot of comments on the nice rotation between BOU and WHM.)

Part of me feels a double up with Wilson and Ritchie may be beneficial based on opening fixtures and stats, primarily Ritchie's, however as I don't want all my eggs in one basket I am opting for Deeney to begin with.

Cazorla is not set in stone, may switch to Ozil.

I know there's the odd punt in there but I feel it is a strong team that could reap rewards.

Not strong enough upfront for me. I wouldn't want to play Deeney every game. I have a slight preference for Özil to Cazorla and Milner to Chadli. Ruddy and Butland is more common. Also Mouldmaster suggests a BOU/WAT/NOR for a three-way rotation [http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/07/18/the-13-5-three-way-defensive-rotation/]
