Watford’s summer overhaul continued in earnest with the capture of Spartak Moscow attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado last week. The 29-year-old – who played under Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores during his spell with Atletico Madrid – expressed his delight at the chance to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League:

“I am very happy to come to Watford and I want to play right now. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it’s a dream for a player to come and play here. I am happy to be with Quique again and I hope this season is good for everybody. I want to play in England and Watford is a good opportunity to play in this league, and I like this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Cadiz, a province of Southern Spain, Jurado began his footballing education at Real Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons turning out for the B side. Having netted 13 goals in 95 appearances for the reserve outfit, Jurado earned his league debut with the senior team in October 2005. After notching a further couple of La Liga cameos in the 2005/06 campaign, he made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006.

By virtue of injuries to Maxi Rodriquez and Martin Petrov, Jurado was afforded a regular starting berth during his debut term at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, bagging one goal across 33 outings. After finding his playing time drastically reduced the following campaign (three starts), the Spanish playmaker was shipped out on loan to Mallorca for the 2008/09 La Liga season.

Jurado enjoyed the best period of his career to date with the Balearic club, chalking up nine goals and ten assists in 35 appearances. He subsequently enjoyed an increased role upon his return to Rojiblancos, featuring in every single league tie of the 2009/10 season while amassing seven goals and five assists. A solid attacking output wasn’t enough to earn Jurado a starting berth at the start of the 2010/11 season, leading to his sale to Schalke.

Managing just three goals and six assists from 31 appearances over two years in the Bundesliga, Jurado made the switch to Spartak Moscow in September 2012 in the pursuit of first-team football. An initial loan deal was made permanent just two months into his stay in Russia’s capital, as the former Real Madrid starlet went on to bag three goals and four assists in 18 appearances (30-match season). The 2013/14 campaign proved to be Jurado’s most profitable in the Russian Premier League, harvesting eight goals and two assists across 29 outings. After earning just ten starts in his final season in Russia, Jurado opted for a change of scenery this summer.

The Prospects

The versatile Jurado has typically operated from a central attacking midfield role throughout his career, but he’s also spent a fair amount of time stationed on the flanks – particularly the left. Having played as a number ten for all but six of 32 outings during his debut campaign with Spartak, he alternated between a variety of roles (attacking/centre mid, winger and support striker) in the 2013/14 season, before occupying a left flank berth for nearly half (13/28) of his starts in the previous campaign.

Handed his debut by the club just three days after signing, the Spaniard made an instant impact by providing the assist for Troy Deeney’s winner against Dundee United. Tellingly, he was the only Watford player to be handed 90 minutes on Saturday, which suggests that Flores is keen to build up the playmaker’s match sharpness ahead of the season kick-off.

The Spanish boss has now employed a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s matches and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of competition for the three slots behind lone striker Deeney. Ikechi Anya and Odion Ighalo also started at the weekend, though the likes of Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and new boy Steven Burghuis are all tussling for starting berths.

Jurado’s previous stint under Flores may well work in his favour and at a price of just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he could stake a claim as a viable cheap midfielder. From a Fantasy perspective, Anya – at 4.5 – would be the more budget friendly option, whilst Vydra and Ighalo’s classification as forwards somewhat lessens their appeal.

The Hornets’ early schedule (eve, WBA, SOU, mci, SWA, new) sits on the tougher end of the spectrum, which might deter interest in their favourably priced assets. Indeed, Watford are rated bottom for attacking potential for the first six Gameweeks by our season ticker. For those who fancy Flores’ side to quickly find their feet, though, they alternate home/away with fellow promoted side Bournemouth if you’re looking for a rotation pairing to consider.

remember even if you have a team that's really popular with the best FPL players you'll still be lucky if more than half of them score points...if you add Miralles into your team he's got nasty fixtures and he'll probably get rotated and then you'll want to sell him while other people are doing different transfers...so depending on circumstances you could miss out or fall behind on getting a good player

I've had this for about a week and it hasn't changed except for a couple players swapping in and out who I can't decide on.

              Myhill - Hennessy
              Ivanovic - Skrtel - Huth - Francis - Prödl
              Hazard - Walcott - Sterling - Ritchie - 4.5
              Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

              Skrtel/Walcott - Kosc/Ozil
              Ivan/Ritchie - Azpi/Milner

Every combo looks strong in there own right

Butland/Ruddy looks the best cheap rotation to begin with..

I don't understand people saying Leicester/Swansea.. At a push I'd only fancy them at all in 4 of the games out of the first 10 for possible clean sheet potential.. Think they'll only end up with 2 maybe 3 between them.

    Hello.

How does the relegated Norwich team from two seasons ago compare to this season's version?

Back then, did they struggle more defensively or offensively?

Are the core group of players mostly the same or totally different?

If drastic changes have been made, in which area do you feel they have improved the most?

My curiosity stems from the fact that bet365 has Bournemouth (2.20) as more likely to get relegated when compared to Norwich (2.10) and Watford (1.72).

Albeit it's preseason and the margin between the first two is almost negligible, most RMT teams on here have disregarded Norwich's players, yet there are plenty of Bournemouth and Watford players being tossed around. How Ruddy!

Opening 10 fixtures look pretty decent to me.

Is it just based on last season's standings in the championship and/or their previous relegation season?

    Please explain.

Last time in the Premiership they were relegated because they didn't score many goals at all. Overall I think they are stronger and more experienced this time around but still feel they will struggle to score goals.

Were defensively mediocre, but main problem was lack of goals. The current team is more experienced but doesn't look offensively strong.

Also Bournemouth are this years Burnley/Blackpool IMO. Yes they may have won the league but they are a great working team in the championship that over achieved. In the premiership they really lack they quality to compete IMO.

With Norwich and last season's stats it would be best to think of it as 2 separate teams, Alex Neil before and after

"My curiosity stems from the fact that bet365 has Bournemouth (2.20) as more likely to get relegated when compared to Norwich (2.10) and Watford (1.72)."

These odds say that of the three promoted clubs, Bournemouth are the LEAST likely to be relegated, with Watford most likely and Norwich second most likely.

          I'd say:

          Rooney
          Young - Depay - Mata
          Morgan - Carrick/Bastian

Then if playing harder opposition they may switch to a 4-3-3 with Herrera in there over Young.

Any chance we just start off with 4-3-3?

How has Depay played as no.10?

I was hoping we might go for something like

            Carrick - Schneiderlin - Herrera

            Mata - Rooney - Depay

There is always a chance but LVG seems to be currently favouring the 4-2-3-1 system. TBH I can't imagine there will be a system he plays every game, he will have to swap between 4-3-3 & 4-2-3-1 depending on opposition.

Depay has fitted in well in the no.10 role, although it is only pre season. I would imagine he will do fairly well this season though.

Yeah I'm thinking I could get him but Mignolet got more points and PPG last season so I'm not sure I can justify the extra. Will see how the cash flow goes and if Chelsea pick up their defensive form.

          • 14 Years

getting Courtois early is a foil for those who have Chelsea defenders, still get the CS points should they manage one or two early. Will grab a Chelsea defender when Jose turns the screws mid season as is his style.

As we are forced to use a WC in the first half of the season i'm taking a much shorter view of things for GW1 and with that in mind i prefer him over Mignolet.

To be fair I do like the lot of 5.5 defs s you have mentioned. A lot of value there if we get them correct. Ivan is just a fail safe option for dullards like me. But will dump him to generate cash either for Azpi or some 5.5 defs when the situation with those 8.5 mids gets clearer as to who is nailed on and in form.

I think this post deserves more consideration. Most of us have a gash £4.5 mid who when inevitably required will get us 1-3 pts. I am coming around to thinking that a £12.5m rotation ie Ritchie and Sakho will get you more points than £12.5 spent on a duff £4.5m mid and playing Pelle or similar every week

Ivanovic / Clyne / Koscielny (Morgan / Mings)
    Fabregas / Sterling / Walcott [V] / Johnson (King)
    Costa [C] / Kane / Deeney

Reading through the points and sub rules it seems sensible to me - is there anything obvious, or not so obvious but very useful I'm missing?

Also, a lot of people are posting about GW4 Aguero - how would I free sub to that?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I'd personally opt for Azpilicueta instead of Ivanovic. Use that money to upgrade either Kane to Rooney or Deeney to Sakho. Or to upgrade Johnson.

A lot in defence. I don't like Johnson as a 4th mid. Not a fan of Deeney either and think Kane is a wait and see as he is a bit overpriced IMO.

      I'd go Ivan -> Azpi
Clyne -> Sakho if you really want pool or just to a 4.5.
Then Johnson and Kane to Rooney and Chadli/Hendo/Milner or to Benteke and Mata/Manè/8.5

Team is decent, would maybe downgrade Clyne to a 4.5 def and spend it to upgrade Johnson.
As for Aguero, the best way for you to get him in would probably be Costa->Aguero and downgrading Walcott (Uncertain playtime when Sanchez comes back), either with a -4 or saving the transfer before GW3 to have two free transfers before GW4

Thoughts on my second draft? I think its rather well balanced

    Ruddy - Butland
    Azpi - Cresswell - Huth - O'Shea - Francis
    Fabregas - Sterling - Ozil - Mané - Ritchie
    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

I'll save you the hassle of a couple expected replies:

    a) "No Hazard" (really worth 2.5M more than Fab? I've had him in since day one but starting to think otherwise.. does leave me with one less captaincy option though)
    b) "Shouldn't have a strong front 8" (I'm more in favour of a more balanced total squad plus it helps that Sakho and Ritchie rotate glorious home games for the first 9 weeks or so)

Other than those feel free to tear it apart đź‰

That's not strictly comparing apples with apples as you'd bench the 4.5m in practically all games. This would give you 1.5m to upgrade a regular fielded player elsewhere.

Sakho looks to be excellent value so spending the 1.5m on upgrading him to an 8m striker doesn't make much financial sense. But using the 1.5m to upgrade a defender or a Chadli to an Ozil, may be well worth it.

Lot of people told me the same thing last year when I was rotating Siggy and Downing but it worked out really well for me. Was top 500 for better part of the season before dropping a little towards end of the season. There may be some method to my madness

I definitely see both sides of the argument though. I could probably squeeze in Hazard and still deploy the same tactic if I downgrade Sterling to Chadli and Cresswell to Jenkinson. Might be better route

I only think this way at start of season. People use the argument about 4.5 mids all the time but I think at the start you need a balance squad to change up and down when the form players come into view. You can't go anywhere with a 4.5. If one emerges that seems good value by all means then get them, especially once sanchez and aguero get back. But where is the flexibility in these squads to fit those players in?

in two weeks you could easily do sterling to bolaise and rooney to aguero and still look good. or steling to hazard and benteke to whichever cheap striker looks like worth the investment

      9/10

very sim to my team, not in personal (we've actually only got francis, huth, fab, ritchie and sakho the same) but in terms of the balance.

I have explored lots of options and I think this is the balance to go for this year with ritchie and sakho giving me (us) a really nice rotation

if I was being picky I'd say downgrade one of your defenders to a 4m just to give you something in the bank. you'll be playing azpi and cress every week so rotate the other two

If they aren't on the pitch, they may as well be a 4.5, because you wont be seeing their points anyway

Benching 6.5 million and not having rooney/kun/costa in your squad and still hhaving to go light in defence is a sign of problems with your team

he does have rooney in the squad and nobody is starting with aguero

your arguement is nonsense. a 4.5 would be off the pitch EVERY week where as a 6m/6.5 rotation would be off every other week. Nobody is suggesting keeping the same 6m on the bench each week, they are being rotated for fixtures

by that rational, why don't people have a defence that reads:

            6m 6m 5m 4m 4m

    5. Twisted Saltergater

Very, very similar to my squad. In the end, I downgraded Ritchie to a 4.5m but am still considering a Sakho rotation.

Can I suggest you sway Cresswell to Jenkinson. He'll have practically no ownership because he is ineligible vs Arsenal, so chances of price rises later. đźŽ

I'd want Hazard over Fabregas purely from a captain perspective, though.

obviously he'd scrap his entire team in a wild card just to get a 4.5 and ensure this NEVER EVER HAPPENED AGAIN

benching points is part and parcel of the game. It doesn't matter who you bench, almost every week there will be one player on there who should have made your first eleven

        2. emperikal
          • 15 Years

Thats a risk you take obviously but by playing the strength of the fixtures you'd hope that with the strong home fixtures there'll be a greater likelihood they player on the pitch will perform better

First 8 games with that rotation gives you:

AVL LEI BOU LEI NEW SUN NOR WAT (benched games would be ars liv whu liv nor mcy stk sun)

Also in case you actually need your bench player to come on in the event of an injury or no show then at least you have a quality option and not a max 2 points from Wanyama/Anya/etc

Like it! I'd still consider Chadli > Depay or similar 8.5m mid.

You may also want to weigh up whether you're going to stick with the excellent 4.5m GK rotation, or afford Courtois week in week out by doing:

        Francis > Targett

        Ruddy + Butland > Courtois + 4m

        🙂

I feel that you will to get the rotation perfect for it to pay off, where as having say Pelle for his kind fixtures then switching to Lukaku for his or other Strikers will pay off better. The way I see it is he's a slight gamble due to tough opening fixtures (besides the 1st game) but he's decently fixture proof and could be a differential, at least among the FFS community. I wouldn't look too much into the hattrick because 2 were penalties and one shouldn't have even been given. Being on pens is a plus though

Def: Liverpool defence is pretty bad would prefer a Mert myself. I went Apzi but Ivan is good but you need goals for that price. Morgan may not start GW1 and the statuses toback Huth.

I'm looking forward to this season more than any-other. Injury has gone perfect and I will be back sooner than expected. I know myself now as a player more then ever. And I know what I have to do! #Letsgo #wemarchon

At £4.0 he can then sit at 3rd res as maximum enabler and cover Bertrand as well.

    Thoughts please?

Who says that they new signings can't fit in just like last seasons did?

Lovren and Shaw left and they stayed solid

Targett will play first few games in Soton's strong defence = at 4mln its a shame he wont play regularly. Soton kept 15 clean sheets last season and have easy fixtures to start and l feel that Pellè will be on fire again ( goalwise)

If you are committed to owning Bertrand, target is a good pick
