Watford’s summer overhaul continued in earnest with the capture of Spartak Moscow attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado last week. The 29-year-old – who played under Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores during his spell with Atletico Madrid – expressed his delight at the chance to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League:

“I am very happy to come to Watford and I want to play right now. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it’s a dream for a player to come and play here. I am happy to be with Quique again and I hope this season is good for everybody. I want to play in England and Watford is a good opportunity to play in this league, and I like this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Cadiz, a province of Southern Spain, Jurado began his footballing education at Real Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons turning out for the B side. Having netted 13 goals in 95 appearances for the reserve outfit, Jurado earned his league debut with the senior team in October 2005. After notching a further couple of La Liga cameos in the 2005/06 campaign, he made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006.

By virtue of injuries to Maxi Rodriquez and Martin Petrov, Jurado was afforded a regular starting berth during his debut term at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, bagging one goal across 33 outings. After finding his playing time drastically reduced the following campaign (three starts), the Spanish playmaker was shipped out on loan to Mallorca for the 2008/09 La Liga season.

Jurado enjoyed the best period of his career to date with the Balearic club, chalking up nine goals and ten assists in 35 appearances. He subsequently enjoyed an increased role upon his return to Rojiblancos, featuring in every single league tie of the 2009/10 season while amassing seven goals and five assists. A solid attacking output wasn’t enough to earn Jurado a starting berth at the start of the 2010/11 season, leading to his sale to Schalke.

Managing just three goals and six assists from 31 appearances over two years in the Bundesliga, Jurado made the switch to Spartak Moscow in September 2012 in the pursuit of first-team football. An initial loan deal was made permanent just two months into his stay in Russia’s capital, as the former Real Madrid starlet went on to bag three goals and four assists in 18 appearances (30-match season). The 2013/14 campaign proved to be Jurado’s most profitable in the Russian Premier League, harvesting eight goals and two assists across 29 outings. After earning just ten starts in his final season in Russia, Jurado opted for a change of scenery this summer.

The Prospects

The versatile Jurado has typically operated from a central attacking midfield role throughout his career, but he’s also spent a fair amount of time stationed on the flanks – particularly the left. Having played as a number ten for all but six of 32 outings during his debut campaign with Spartak, he alternated between a variety of roles (attacking/centre mid, winger and support striker) in the 2013/14 season, before occupying a left flank berth for nearly half (13/28) of his starts in the previous campaign.

Handed his debut by the club just three days after signing, the Spaniard made an instant impact by providing the assist for Troy Deeney’s winner against Dundee United. Tellingly, he was the only Watford player to be handed 90 minutes on Saturday, which suggests that Flores is keen to build up the playmaker’s match sharpness ahead of the season kick-off.

The Spanish boss has now employed a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s matches and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of competition for the three slots behind lone striker Deeney. Ikechi Anya and Odion Ighalo also started at the weekend, though the likes of Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and new boy Steven Burghuis are all tussling for starting berths.

Jurado’s previous stint under Flores may well work in his favour and at a price of just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he could stake a claim as a viable cheap midfielder. From a Fantasy perspective, Anya – at 4.5 – would be the more budget friendly option, whilst Vydra and Ighalo’s classification as forwards somewhat lessens their appeal.

The Hornets’ early schedule (eve, WBA, SOU, mci, SWA, new) sits on the tougher end of the spectrum, which might deter interest in their favourably priced assets. Indeed, Watford are rated bottom for attacking potential for the first six Gameweeks by our season ticker. For those who fancy Flores’ side to quickly find their feet, though, they alternate home/away with fellow promoted side Bournemouth if you’re looking for a rotation pairing to consider.

As advised yesterday I thought i'd share this with the DZ'ers if you have any thoughts on it?

So here is my team with some of my thoughts behind the picks (sorry if the post is slightly long)

    Mignolet/Ruddy
    Azpi - Koscielny - O'Shea/Morgan (S.Taylor)
Fabregas - Ozil - Chadli - Young (Wanyama)
    Costa - Rooney - Sakho

Wanyama & S.Taylor as permanent bench players.

I have 2.5m in the bank to swap Costa to Aguero as soon as he is back. I prefer the funds ready in the bank so it is just one easy transfer rather than attempting to save 2 free transfers or risking needing to take a points hit. I will bring him in GW2 if confirmed starting so this makes this easy to do.

Mignolet/Ruddy does't seem to crop up on many RMT's on here but I really like their perfect Home & Away rotation. Mignolet was the 2nd highest scoring keeper last season and his first four home games are BOU, WHM, NOR, VIL.

Morgan will become Huth if the former is not fit for the start of the season. I know S.Taylor won't play but he will be my 3rd choice sub each week and I am happy to have a non-starting player.

Chadli/Young may not be alot of peoples cup of tea but Young @ 6m is a bargain for now. Playing preseason, Di Maria looking to leave and has seemed to get minutes fairly easily under LVG. IF Man Utd sign a player in his place (later in the transfer window) then I can swap him out to the best mid priced option that has shown himself over the first few weeks. Chadli gets points when he plays and I think he will play. At 7m he will justify the price tag easily so long as he starts. I like both Milner/Henderson but for the start i'm not interested in picking either.

Main negatives are no Hazard but i'm on the half of the fence that says Fabregas + 2.5m is sufficient over Hazard and will be sticking to it for now.

I think the team is set up well enough to make midfield/striker tweaks easily enough early on without too much change and should hopefully stand me in good stead for the start of the season.

    Any thoughts would be welcome.

I'm not saying anything about him not starting well. I think he could start great but I feel I would rather have Fab + 2.5m regardless of how he starts as I did last season.

I wouldn't worry about Ivan. Yes he may well be the highest scoring defender but the gap between him isn't going to be that huge to other decent defender picks overall.

I would say Sterling & Costa may be the most explosive and therefore hurt the most.

just a thought on Hazard vs No Hazard.

Obviously we will all be scrambling to fit in Aguero come week 4, but everyone also seems to have forgotten about Sanchez, who may start firing before Kun.

Having those funds already in midfield make it a far easier swap if necessary.

I decided to go for Fabregas over Hazard. However, i'm doubting my decision as I don't like starting knowing that i'll have to use transfers for Hazard, Aguero and possibly Sanchez. I don't like taking hits but I suppsoe starting without Hazard can be rectified with just a 4 point hit so it might be worth it.

Whether you start with Haz or not, I don't think either decision is clearly better, only time will tell, and it also how well it wrks out depends a great deal on how the extra funds from not having Hazard are used.

To own? Personally I've gone Hazard + Rooney, and will captain Haz.

None. There was hope that Hennessey would move to WBA but that seems unlikely.

    Pretty happy with this:

    Butland - Speroni
    Azpilicueta - Koscielny - Williams - Huth - Ward
    Hazard - Ozil - Ki - Schneiderlin - Ibe
    Costa - Rooney - Wilson

    Goalkeepers offer great rotation.
    Defenders are all definite starters
Hazard is a must, I think Ozil will have a great season. Ki and Schneiderlin are underrated and I think Ibe will have a breakout season.
Wilson's fixtures make him a good backup, was considering Defoe for a while.
Rooney and Costa together I like.

Most importantly, 2.5m in the bank for Aguero.

    Thought please? 🙂

      Nice team

      Speroni has tough fixtures though
      I like the defence
I would downgrade either costs or rooney to spend and upgrade one of your lesser midfielders though as I think your midfield is weak...

      Rooney/ Costa -> Tekkers

Speroni does have some tough fixtures, but over the season his home rotation with Butland is pretty sweet. Only other 4.5 I like is Kasper but I like Huth under Ranieri.

I really think having Rooney will be a good thing, I could free up money but dropping Costa as I have Hazard anyway.

Appreciate your time, food for thought 🙂

      Pretty decent.

Not sure how many points you'll get from Ki/Schneiderlin/Ibe though...

Can't you get someone better with your £2m, then just downgrade them to whichever cheap in-form midfielder there is at the time, when you come to get Aguero?

Yeah thats not a bad shout, pretty tough to think about which cheap midfielder will shine this year. Ki and Schneid will start so I could look at replacing Ibe until I know here is a starter.

        Thanks 🙂

Price changes were really slow during international breaks last season. Is there anything to suggest that this season will be any different?
May not be worth wild carding at that time

Don't think we've had any news so it would be safe to summer price rises will be similar to last year.

FPL Towers won't tell us - they have to let us work it out for ourselves. I say 'us', but really it'll be those clever people at FISO or their spin-off site at FFF. Unless frank at TotalFPL decides to have another go.

Is it daft to have enough money in the bank to get Aguero and Sanchez in after a couple of weeks?

It's a tactic but not one that I particularly like, especially if weeks are passing before you spend it. Likelihood is you'll get more points spending that money and even if you have to spend 4 points to get one of them in you'll still be in profit

Thanks, just working through the different tactics. I set my team up to WC in week 4 then and look at getting Hazard, Sanchez and Aguero then.
I will be starting with Hazard.
