Following the permanent arrival of Sebastian Coates earlier in the transfer window, Younes Kaboul became the second centre-back signing for Sunderland this summer. The France international expressed his eagerness to work under Dick Advocaat while praising the Black Cats’ team spirit during their relegation scrap:

“He is a great manager and from what I saw last season I was really impressed by everyone at the club, at Arsenal it was really emotional but that is football – you cannot control it and what the lads did was amazing. Team spirit is the most important thing because it is what makes everything happen.”

The History

Born in Saint-Julien-en-Genevois, France, Kaboul cut his teeth at a trio of amateur clubs, before making the switch to Auxerre in 2000. After four years learning his trade in the youth set-up, the six-foot-four-inch centre-back earned his first league start for the Burgundy club in November 2004. He went on to make a further 11 starts that campaign but could only muster nine in the 2005/06 Ligue 1 term. Kaboul eventually cemented a starting berth the following season, tallying two goals and one assist across 31 appearances.

Tottenham Hotspur then came calling, landing the robust centre-back in an £8 million deal. Although injuries limited his involvement at the turn of the year, Kaboul displayed an attacking edge in the 2007/08 Premier League season, chalking up three goals and one assist across 21 outings. After just one year at White Hart Lane, Kaboul signed for Portsmouth in the summer of 2008.

In his two seasons with the south coast outfit, Kaboul notched four goals and one assist in 50 appearances while being deployed in a variety of positions (centre-back, right-back, defensive midfield) under three separate managers. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp then sought to re-sign the Frenchman, resulting in his return to north London in January 2010.

Kaboul spent the remainder of the 2009/10 season at right-back for Tottenham, before earning starts at both centre-back and right-back the following term. He enjoyed a relatively injury-free 2011/12 campaign and established himself as a mainstay in central defence, bagging one goal and one assist in 33 appearances, before a spate of injuries restricted him to just 12 outings over the next two years. Kaboul started the first 11 fixtures of 2014/15 but fell out of favour with manager Mauricio Pochettino thereafter, making the squad on just four occasions from Gameweek 12.

Having captained France at every stage of the youth system, Kaboul was afforded his first senior cap for Les Bleus in 2011, scoring on his debut friendly against Ukraine. He has since gone on to card three more starts for France, with his last appearances arriving in October 2011.

The Prospects

Kaboul’s addition, allied with Coates’ arrival, swells the number of options in the heart of Sunderland’s defence for the season ahead. The Black Cats managed 13 clean sheets last year – the same number as Arsenal – but with John O’Shea and Wes Brown also in contention, there’s a great deal of uncertainty over Advocaat’s likely starters.

Speaking to the local press, club skipper O’Shea conceded that Advocaat has a real dilemma on his hands:

“There’s a lot of competition in defence now and that’s what we’re looking for throughout the whole team. That’s how you get success. I’ve had that practically all my career and that’s how teams get better. You need people constantly fighting for places and fighting to stay in that XI. Hopefully that’s how we get better results. It’s a manager’s dream.”

For Fantasy managers, though, it’s a real source of frustration, given that all four centre-halves come in at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. In addition, the arrival of Adam Matthews (4.5) places uncertainty over the right-back berth, with the summer signing from Celtic set to vie with Billy Jones (also 4.5) for a starting role. Ultimately, this leaves us approaching the start of the season with only Costel Pantilimon and Patrick van Aanholt – at 5.0 apiece – looking nailed-on for the Wearside outfit.

Certainly, the changes in the BPS will favour Pantilimon – and given that the Romanian averaged 4.4 points per appearance last season, he could well justify the extra outlay. Van Aanholt, meanwhile, tallied five assists in 2,307 minutes last term, with only Leighton Baines (nine) and Daryl Janmaat (six) besting that haul amongst defenders, whilst he also fashioned 17 more shots (30) than any other Black Cats backline option in 2014/15.

Given that they managed more shut-outs away than at home (seven to six), Sunderland are clearly capable of tightening up on their travels – indeed, only Liverpool and West Brom (eight apiece) managed more clean sheets on the road. Looking at the schedule, Sunderland’s kind opening batch of fixtures (lei, NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou) is certainly conducive to defensive returns; indeed, Advocaat’s men face just three of last year’s top seven in the first 14 Gameweeks.

Sunderland, however, only have two more friendlies before the campaign kicks-off and bearing in mind that Kaboul and Coates have yet to feature (though both are expected to play some part against Doncaster tomorrow night), it remains to be seen whether either will be fully match fit come their season opener at Leicester a week on Saturday. It may well be, then, that we won’t know Advocaat’s preferred options until a few matches into the new campaign, when all his defenders will be up to scratch.

I'm a Liverpool fan. I know a fair bit about the team. I see a lot of questions about certain players and I thought some of you may want some info from a slightly obsessive fan perspective. If not, screw you, at least this'll serve as personal catharsis.

Goalkeeper is pretty obvious: both are crap. Though one is less crap. That's Mignolet. He could get dropped at anytime like last season though. This is kind of a make or break season for him. Word on the street as if he's fluffs this season they'll move for Lloris if we get Champions League. Which we won't. Huh huh huh.

Defense: Rodger's preferred back four is Clyne // Skrtl // Sakho // Moreno. Lovren may be shoed in despite being garbage. This is because Rodgers wants to prove to the world that his signing him for 20 mill wasn't a complete balls up. It was.

Moreno came back 11 lbs overweight, much to Rodger's chagrin. He's worked it off quick though. They were in talks for Digne but he went cold in the idea. Probably cos Rodgers wants to play him as an inverted six pence.

Gomez has impressed hugely and will be used. He could even replace Moreno if Moreno doesn't hit form quickly. I've even heard whispers of Moreno being available for transfer but this was before Digne went cold.

Midfield: No fan truly has a clue on the DM position. Looks like Can but apparently we've bid for Illaremendi and are waiting on Madrid's response.

Milner and Henderson will both play. No way Milner would have come to us if he was guaranteed game time. Henderson is Captain though and no way in hell will he get dropped, so he's more of a banker. He is unlikely to have penalties, that'll go to Benteke. However, knowing Rodgers, he could give them to Mignolet to improve his confidence.

Firmino and Coutinho are shoe ins. Everyone is so excited about Firmino (even Rodgers) he's gotta play the first game.

Ibe will play if we need a winger on. Could start, but not worth the risk. Maybe in UFPL. Management weren't too fussed with losing Sterling as many feel Ibe isn't far off from Sterling's ability and has a far better attitude (came back early to practice finishing with Dalglish). The fans and club love him. He will play and he will be great but he will rotate between the bench and the starting eleven depending on formation.

Benteke is gonna start. Rodgers wanted him so bad, he was the number one target this season. There are concerns over Sturridge so I wouldn't worry about him displacing Benteke. If anything, Rodgers would drop Sturridge behind Benteke into an AM position.

    Probably nothing you didn't know...

Nice, cheers for that. Personally I will keep liverpool players out of my gw1 team and react fast if any of them looks great. Benteke and Firmino with no preseason with the team so far, just think it could take a couple of matches to gel in attack

See my post below. Rodgers has to get it right fast. He needs all his big guns blazing. If rumours of him needing 25 points in the first 33 are true, he has to beat Stoke.

          I haven't heard this rumour?

I'm guessing if he doesn't get 25/33 he'll be getting a sudden meeting with the board?

Well, what I heard was that Henry wanted him gone but Gordan had the deciding vote and he stayed (he got Rodgers in in the first place so he has more riding on him paying off). They need to be in contention for the top 4 on the 31/10. It's no meeting, he'll be out. That meeting has already been had. It's a rumour but it's a very strong one. I think 25 points is virtually impossible with the opening fixtures. Look!:

            Stoke (Away)
            Bournemouth (Home)
            Arsenal (Away)
            West Ham (Home)
            Man Utd (Away)
            Norwich (Home)
            Aston Villa (Home)
            Everton (Away)
            Spurs (Away)

I read the Benteke bit, and it didn't convince me he'll start gw 1. All it's saying is that he'll be nailed. How much pre-season has he had? And do you think he'll be ready to start vs Stoke?

True, but the fact Rodgers' ass is sooooo on the line, he was his number 1 target, we got spanked by them on the last game of the season, Sturridge is still knackered, leaving our only other options as Ings & Origi (both who were signed as impact subs/Cup players/prospects) builds up to a fairly convincing picture of Big Ben starting GW1.

I've also heard a batcrap mental rumour that Rodgers has to have 25 points by the 31/10 or he's out. I think that's a bit far fetched. I think he's been told we can't be too far off the pace of the leaders by then. I still don't think he can do that.

I haven't seen fans as excited about a player that we've signed in years. I think Torres was the last one. Even Suarez was a bit unknown to some due to playing in a weaker league. Most of us felt he was too good for us without CL, so to get him gave everyone a lift. The partnership with Coutinho is something we're so looking forward too. Lallana could start at first as, unlike Benteke, he's never played in this league. But he's got time and Rodgers really needs a win in the opening game.

Ah the AFCON! Forgot about that. Agreed, the Chelsea game was the kickstarter to his success. Just hoping he can maintain starts, Koeman still used him as a sub long after the cup finished

I guess its just Strikers over mids, also there are lots of mids in that price range, less strikers.

Top 4 striker last year who went off the boil completely. Could have crazy season if maintained the form

Anyhow... Banging them away in pre season so happy to have him. I don't think Tadic back in favour, Long still sniffing around and JRod back is any good to Mane as a 90min proposition

He was top 4 because the other strikers in the league sucked, and he started almost every game.

His ppg is 3.9, pretty poor for 8.0m.

            PPG deceives

I value minutes. Goes back to my original point Vs Mane

His numbers are comparable with Rooney. Better than Lukaku. Not far off Benteke

And all this a player who went through a 10-12 game low run

            He has upside imo

Pelle seems to be the only one trusted to lead the line, Mane has a lot of competition.

Tadic, Mane, Davis, JWP, Long, J-Rod and Juanmi all into 3 spots.

No room for Mane with ARS, LIV, CHE + CHEAP making up my midfield.

Pelle having a good preseason and comfortable in his team unlike Tekkers.
Good opening fixtures and can always downgrade If a cheaper option starts banging them in.

I think they will score as good as equal again this season, for equal prices.

Pelle more involved in all elements of the play? Mane only good in bursts? It's like comparing Giroud and Walcott, i like Walcott but Giroud is consistently involved, up front, if not scoring linking the play and getting assists, even though on his day walcott is the one who could get a hat trick..

The other day I was thinking about the FFS community and the way information is shared on here almost instantly as it happens. I also thought about the collective knowledge of all it's users and realised that we could probably do really immense stuff if we all pooled together on certain objectives.

Weirds thoughts, I know, but interesting all the same.

Pelle burned out a but like Giroud the previous season because he was playing 90 game after game. Pelle is clearly an average to good player, hugely reliant on confidence who imo will do well for a spell and then just go on a series of blanks. Could start the season well though.

How fantastically put. He's streaky, you need to grab him while he's hot. His overall average ppg won't be good because he has baron spells.

Has Mane's rise to form stifled his attacking threat? Or was his decline purely fatigue?

And also SOT were generally worse in 2nd half, again fatigue related and previous over performing.

And injuries. Tadic, Schneiderlin and Wanyama in parts. A bit of Toby too. The whole squad was a bit injury ravaged.

Fatigue mixed with a lack of confidence. A bit of a vicious spiral. I think Mané's rise was probably coincidental more than anything. Plus Mané was probably encouraged to push forward more because Pelle was struggling so much.

So, is there a 'template' team yet?

Yes, I have been away for a couple of weeks. No, I don't care. I'm back and I still haven't even started making a team. Oh well! Let's get on to another post of other people's photos from around the world.

http://i.imgur.com/Ra1YggD.jpg - First up, it's a trip to Yosemite National Park in California, USA. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has waterfalls, valleys, mountains, what's not to love? Oh, and the latest version of OS X by Apple, is named after it. Techknowledge.

http://i.imgur.com/hyZ0fVY.jpg - Where to next? Whilst it may look like the world's most difficult golf course, it is in fact the sand dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses in Brazil. Yes, that is water, the dunes become flooded by rain causing these lagoons to form. A large number of fish can be found there when the lagoons are at their fullest after July, when they are interconnected to rivers. Fascinating stuff.

https://i.imgur.com/GJo1MMW.jpg - Bet you didn't see this one coming! Welcome to Iran! These are the rather surprising mountains of Kelardasht, Iran. Kelardasht was originally a farming area, however much of its land has been sold to build villas which are occupied by summer visitors trying to escape the heat of Tehran and points further south. Make holidays not war.

And that is that. See you all next time.

Most people have jumped on the Ozil wagon in the past week tbh, previously they weren't considering him. Doesn't take much for herd mentality to take over and no independent thinking. BTW this is not to say Ozil isn't a good option, just can't understand the massive bandwagon that seems to have arisen in the past 4-5 days.

To be honest, I think Walcott and Ramsey could literally explode on this Sunday's Community Shield. I have Ozil and Walcott, mainly for this first week, and then I'll likely drop Walcott for Aguero at some point. I had Ramsey 2013-2014 when he shone super bright for us, and then got injured, like a bunghole. Well, they all got injured.

Love Cazorla. Was an absolute dream for me last season.

0.5 ITB + Costa/Rooney out + a downgrade of either Chadli to a 5.5, or one of my big hitting mids to a 6.5-7.0.

Been told under no uncertain terms that having a Rag in my team gets me booted from THREE of my leagues (All City fans and mates of course), and this year I am gonna do just that. Painful to see Rags matches and have to hope Shrek scores a hat trick but hope they lose 4-3 every time out...

Is there any chance of a high O.R going with hearts over heads? Couldn't imagine playing this game without Ronaldo a few years back...

Any Spurs fans refuse to pick the Arse or vice versa?

As a City fan, and HALF decent human being, seeing My Team page with the likes of Terry...Cole...Gerrard...Ronaldo...Rooney etc is tough.

        Them be da rules

It seems I must not bother with the aforementioned leagues in that case. Not really worth bothering with this game is it, if like you say, one limits oneself to a lesser pool of players, keeping out high scorers like Shrek, Suarez, Terry etc etc

FPL takes over enjoying City matches sometimes.

More interested in who is scoring and assisting in other matches!!

yeah it's annoying, I can't play in most everton fan leagues since I'd rather pick a couple pool players at different points in the season! Impossible to go without Suarez or Sterling previously... I could probably live without Hendo & Co this season but won't limit myself

Great side if Ade moves and is fit for the start of the season.

Only comment is to get Rudd for now just to backup any Ruddy injury /suspension.

Bacuna OOP every game this season. With N'Zog off, I reckon he's going to get nod on the right. Issue is Ayew and Grealish to come back.

Another debate really. Ade should start, Ayew second striker and Agbon or Sinclair wide left is my prediction for now. Ayew's debut will be later tonight so will see where he plays!

Not sure about Ayew, heard mixed reviews. Think Ade would jump to the front of the queue for the 3rd striker spot, though i think you're not a great fan?

If Butthead is still around, thanks for the Liverpool summary! I enjoyed reading through your thoughts. 🙂

Though it needs to be twice the length with some really unnecessary line up predictions which you live to regret within 48 hours and then have to add stupid unnecessary bits to the end of it, long after everyone's stopped reading it, so that eventually, you'll have to give out bucketloads of apologies to people who followed your advice and missed your amendments. 😉

Nahh, I know. Only the few doubts are.
          *Base of midfield.
          *CB alongside Sakho
*Whether Benteke, Firmino, Coutinho ready for GW1.

CB alongside Sakho is not in question, Skrtel arguably ahead of all of them.

3rd point just relies on press conference, otherwise Lallana will start imo.

Pretty happy with my initial draft. Pretty good defence rotation and flexibility in midfield.

    What do you think?

    Schmeicel / Schwarzer

    Azpi / Jenkinson / Huth / O'Shea / Francis

    Rooney / Benteke / Sakho
